So, we know a new movie, Resurrection F, is coming out. Japanese version April 18th. In continuity with Battle of Gods, which is most likely non-canon with the anime.

What we know, is that two of Frieza's minions wish him back with the Dragonballs, he undergoes training to rival Goku at Super Saiyan God level, and Beerus is in it.

I'm not looking forward to it too terribly though, because I think Frieza is going to survive. The previous movie didn't kill off its main villain. Though it could be argued that Beerus isn't like your other DBZ villains and isn't all bad, unlike Frieza who is the most evil villain of the series, but there are other shows that have departed from that old-fashioned ending as well:

May contain spoilers for other series

Batman (Tim Burton series) - First film, Joker falls to his death. Second film, Penguin falls into poisoned water. Third film, Two-Face falls to his death, though the Riddler is committed to Arkham Asylum. Fourth film? Both Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy are committed to Arkham Asylum (and the former turns good). Incidentally this was the worst film of the series that not only got it cancelled, but dissolved most of its fanbase, making it easy to forget once the series was rebooted with Batman Begins. (stopped June 20, 1999)

Sailor Moon - First season, Princess Serena blasts Queen Beryl and the Negaforce to oblivion. Second season, Princess Serena and Rini vaporize Wiseman. Third season, Sailor Uranus destroys Germatoid, Hotaru destroys Mistress 9, and Sailor Moon destroys Pharaoh 90. Fourth season, Queen Nehelenia returns to her mirror forever to gain eternal youth. Though its reboot did have Queen Metalia (Negaforce) end up like her original. (stopped November 16th, 2000)

Buffy the Vampire Slayer - First season, Buffy kills The Master. Though Drusilla survives the second season, third season has Giles blow up Mayor Wilkins. Fourth season, Buffy tears out Adam's heart. Fifth season, Giles kills Glory. Sixth season, Willow flays and incinerates Warren. Seventh season? The First is invincible so they can only destroy his army. This continues into Season 5 of Angel where the Senior Partners, main antagonists of the series, survive without even personally confronting Angel and the gang. (stopped May 20, 2003)

Interesting to note that The First and the Senior Partners, ultimate antagonists of the Buffyverse, survive when the Buffyverse kills off the most named or otherwise significant villains, by my count.

Shrek - First film, Lord Farquaad is eaten by Dragon. She even kills his ghost for good measure in the in-between spinoff. Second film, Fairy Godmother is destroyed by her own attack. Third film, Dragon kills Prince Charming with her tail. Fourth film, Rumpelstiltskin, the most evil villain of the four, is merely imprisoned in a cage at the swamp. (stopped May 21st, 2010)

Dragonball Z movies - Already mentioned above. Movies 2-13 saw Dr. Wheelo, Turles, Lord Slug, Cooler, Android 13, Bojack, Broly, Bio-Broly, Janemba, and Hirudegarn destroyed. Stopped March 30th, 2013

Spartacus - First season, Spartacus slits Batiatus's throat. Second season, he rams a sword down Glaber's throat. Third season, Marcus Crassus wins, and his men kill Spartacus. At least all the other ones on this list (with one exception to be listed below) have seen the villain either imprisoned or reformed, but this one takes it a step further by having the villain win. (stopped April 12th, 2013)

Winx Club - Though the Trix survive the first season to return later and end up imprisoned: Second season, Lord Darkar is destroyed by the Winx. Third season, Bloom destroys Valtor by extinguishing his flame. Fourth season, Nabu kills Duman, and the Winx send Ogron, Anagan, and Gantlos falling to their doom. Fifth season? Tritannus is banished to oblivion, and the Trix return as villains of Season 6. Though the RAI version, which is the version I go by, ends at Season 4 so that's convenient for me. (stopped April 24th, 2013)

Disney movies - The very series that gave me my interest in villains' death scenes. There are a great deal of them, especially in the Disney Princess movies. Disney stopped killing off its villains (in favor of killing good characters at the beginning instead) with Frozen, which is now the third Disney Princess movie not to kill its main villain (Prince Hans), first two being Cinderella and Pocahontas. Although Jafar did not die in the first Aladdin, he did in the second. The next Disney movie, Big Hero 6, takes this a step further by invoking the whole "revenge" scenario with Yokai (which I might mention Batman and Winx Club did with Two-Face and the fairy hunters, and still were able to see them killed in a good way). (stopped November 27th, 2013)

Kinda like how the series that gave me my interest in tails had its subtheme of tails diminish halfway through: This very series, Dragonball Z. It diminishes after Cell absorbs Android 18, and is even symbolized by his tail retracting.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - The first two villains survived: Nightmare Moon was the pilot episode, by which point the brony fandom hadn't formed yet so they couldn't do anything too extreme, which is why she didn't even start out as a villain, she is Luna corrupted so naturally she's restored to her true self, and as for Discord of Season 2, the Elements turned him to stone the first time so why would they do any different the second time? Then at the end of Season 2 came Queen Chrysalis, who is blasted over the edge of a mountain and falls to her doom, though in a kinda subtle way, and people liked her so much they wanted her to survive and said she did (prompting her return in a comic series). Season 3, King Sombra is destroyed up front, and despite people thinking him to be a lame villain (which I disagree with), they were disappointed and some still think he survived, despite the writers confirming his death.

After this reception to the death of their least favorite villain, the movie brought us Sunset Shimmer, who turned good, mostly because she's not the type of villain who gets killed in a family-friendly show. But Season 4 brought us Tirek, who was as evil as Chrysalis and Sombra, and he just gets de-powered and imprisoned in hell (despite the fact that his G1 counterpart was killed). Then came the Dazzlings in the next movie, and they get de-powered and run off! The same thing happens with Starlight Glimmer in Season 5, it seems that running off is their default villain defeat now and they're not even going for redemption or imprisonment anymore. (Stopped May 10th, 2014, not counting Sunset Shimmer)

X-Men - While Magneto survives until the film that erases the events leading to his death from history: Second film, Stryker is killed when the dam burst. The Wolverine, Yashida is thrown over a mountain by Wolverine. X-Men: First Class, Sebastian Shaw is killed by Magneto. Days of Future Past? Takes it a step further by making the heroes' main objective to save the main villain, on account of his death causing the apocalypse. Also resurrects Stryker. At least, unlike Crassus, the Dazzlings, and Starlight, Trask gets imprisoned. It is highly likely that Apocalypse survives X-Men: Apocalypse as well. (stopped May 23rd, 2014)

Spoilers end here

Probably because people find that old-fashioned ending to be repetitive, or else are too attached to the villains. At least most are doing redemption or imprisonment, but in time they'll start just having the villain run off, and before long people will want the villain to win, so then the dark age of villains beating (most likely killing) the heroes will begin, which I predict will happen with Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War.

And it's obvious why they're resurrecting Frieza in this movie. It's because of all the Frieza fans who were disappointed that he was killed off and want to see him some more. For that reason they'll want to keep him alive in this movie. I don't know how or if he'll be defeated otherwise, unlike Beerus he cannot be reasoned with, he's the most evil villain in the show and at the power level he'll reach I don't think even Beerus would intimidate him into running away forever. He also won't accept defeat, or at least the Frieza we knew in the anime won't, but I can't shake the feeling that once he's outmatched by Goku, Vegeta, and maybe Beerus, he'll just retreat and run his empire while staying away from the earth. Or, I even read on TV tropes that he successfully blows up the earth...

But that's just my theory. What do you think?

Edit: Dang! I forgot to comment on it to keep it un-archived. Well, it wasn't getting any comments anyway so that's hardly a big deal...
