"A God of Destruction taught me that power derived solely from instinct is unbounded."
Vegeta to Granolah in "Vegeta Vs. Granolah".

Ultra Ego (我儘わがまま極意ごくい Wagamama no Goku'i, lit. "The Secret of the Self-indulgent") is an extremely powerful transformation used by Vegeta that utilizes the Ultra Ego ability and the power of destruction.[5][6]

Overview

Concept and Creation

Ultra Ego was created by Toyotarou and added to the story after Toriyama greenlit it. The name was chosen to be in line with Ultra Instinct's names and also to fit with Vegeta. Vegeta's appearance in the form was based off Beerus, as he is also a user of Ultra Ego himself.[7] He also depicted it and Ultra Instinct as Yin and Yang.

This state is attained by one who has received a proper God of Destruction training and has gained the ability to use the powers of one. However, the state can only be utilized when the user is in the right mindset to act as a Destroyer. Vegeta at one point during his fight with Granolah described the form as a polar opposite to Ultra Instinct. A user of this state gains the power of destruction.[5][6]

Ultra Ego is the strongest form Vegeta has appeared in. Ultra Ego changes its user's ki to become the same as that of a God of Destruction and its user's power grows without limit through instinct as their fighting spirit increases.[8]

Appearance

Ultra Ego resembles Super Saiyan 3.[8] The user's eyebrows become ridge-like, with no visible facial hair. The user's hair become tyrian purple in color. Their eyes attain a magenta-like color irises as well and also retain visible black pupils. Additionally the user's muscle mass seems to gain a small increase and become much more defined. The user also gains flaming-like purple aura that circulate around their body.

Usage and Power

"Damage is nothing but fuel for me. Do you realize what that means? I'm only getting stronger!"
Vegeta to Gas in "A People's Pride"

Effects of UE

When the Ultra Ego transformation is in use, the user becomes exponentially more powerful than before and gains the ability to use Power of Destruction in full. The user's aura can also be manifested in an opaque, flame-like state which can destroy enemy attacks on contact. Vegeta names the technique Ultra Ego in contrast to Ultra Instinct, which draws upon the principles of conquering oneself, while Ultra Ego seems to draw upon a severe level of self-indulgence in battle. Whereas Ultra Instinct allows a user's efficiency and power to increase as he continues to evade and counterattack, Ultra Ego allows the user's overall power to increase as they take more damage and delve more into their lust for battle. This is displayed by Vegeta's deeper dive into his Saiyan instincts. Being able to endure and even enjoy the pain inflicted by enemy attacks can also allow the user to hold their ground and counterattack through openings in an attacking opponent's guard with even greater power.

The user must be careful not to let their battle lust take complete control, as though it may raise their strength to astounding levels, they may take unnecessary levels of damage whilst lost in their battle fervor. Unlike Ultra Instinct, Ultra Ego can be taken on at will once achieved, and unlike Goku, Vegeta even proved to be able to transform when severely damaged and drained.

Vegeta first attains Ultra Ego against Granolah after his Super Saiyan God SS Evolved form is overwhelmed by the Cerealian. The transformation was powerful enough to cause Granolah to stumble back in noticeable fright. While fighting Granolah, Vegeta initially overwhelms him in strength, but as the fight goes on, Vegeta, somewhat lost in the thrill of the fight allows himself to take more and more attacks to push himself further. After a while, Vegeta realizes that he's taken too much damage and attempts to defeat Granolah with a large ball of power of destruction. However, Granolah manages to counter the attack after mutating his left eye and Vegeta fell to the ground by the impact. Vegeta reverts back to his base form during the fight, but then after Goku steps in for a short while, Vegeta knocked him away before resuming his Ultra Ego form and fighting Granolah until he was forced back to his base form.

After their wounds were healed, Vegeta along with Goku unite against Gas whom transform into their Ultra Ego and Ultra Instinct forms, respectively. They both charge at Gas filled with their newfound pride in their people. The two of them fought in tandem but even this proved not to be enough.

Weaknesses

The heightened lust for battle required for this state can cause the user to act rashly. Taking damage in order to fuel one's battle lust and become stronger can backfire if the user accumulates too much physical damage to continue fighting effectively. As noted by Vegeta, the form is at its highest capacities when one abandons their full morality, similar to how he was possessed by Babidi and felt like his old self.

While Ultra Ego gives the user more strength when they take more damage, it has been shown that a user can be overwhelmed and defeated by an attack that is quite strong. This was shown when Vegeta was overwhelmed and defeated by Frieza in his newly unveiled Black Frieza transformation.

Trivia

  • This is the second transformation Vegeta achieves for the first time on-panel in the manga after Super Saiyan God SS Evolved.
  • Ultra Ego resembles some of the earlier concept designs for Super Saiyan 3 that Toriyama had made prior to its final design. All coincidence with this design is unintentional, however.
