"Then no one's safe from Frieza... not even you... "
Dragon Ball Z: Bardock - The Father of Goku

Tora, also known as Toma (トーマ Tōma) in the original Japanese version, is a Saiyan and a member of Team Bardock, a group within the Saiyan Army under the Frieza Force.

Overview[]

Conception[]

ToraNV01

Tora on Kanassa

Tora's original character design by Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru differed much from the final draft by Akira Toriyama. Originally he had hair that closely resembled Vegeta's. His body was not muscular like it is now, he was actually drawn with a much thinner body, which made him look taller than Bardock. Like a few other members of Bardock's team, Tora's name was not changed completely from the original draft to the final draft, as it was Tomā (トマー); the other members consist of Bardock and Shugesh.[2]

Appearance[]

Tora is one of the taller members of Bardock's team and wears ice blue and black armor. His hair is flat at the top and kept in a small ponytail at the back, and his skin is a dark tan color.

Personality[]

Tora is much like Bardock in that he will kill in cold blood and is a ruthless fighter, yet has a high degree of honor and camaraderie. He is also shown to have a light-hearted side, often playfully teasing his allies, especially his best friend Bardock, to whom he makes of point of keeping the captain from getting too cocky.

In the Dragon Ball SD adaption of the Episode of Bardock, his light-hearted side is shown when he convinces Bardock and his teammates to perform a team fighting pose (which is identical to the Ginyu Force's signature team fighting pose), though Bardock finds the pose awkward and is comically angry at Tora for convincing him to do something so embarrassing.

Tora on planet Vegeta

Tora, along with Bardock, Fasha, Borgos, and Shugesh, attack Planet Kanassa in their Great Ape forms. After Bardock is attacked by the last surviving Kanassan, Toolo, Tora kills the Kanassan. Then, Tora and the others decide to return Bardock to their home world Planet Vegeta, so that he can receive treatment for his injuries.

After hearing that there is an inconsistency in his brainwaves, the group decide to leave without him to wipe out the inhabitants on Planet Meat, as this is their next assignment. It is assumed that after reaching Meat, they immediately destroy all of its natives, but before they can celebrate the moment, they are ambushed by Dodoria and his elites, who make short work of the team.

Before finishing Tora off with a brutal punch to the face, Dodoria reveals Frieza's intent to destroy the entire Saiyan race. Tora initially survives the attack but dies of his wounds immediately after informing the recovered Bardock of what he has discovered. Tora is the only person Bardock gets the chance to talk to when the latter finds his group slaughtered by Dodoria and his elites. Vowing to avenge his four allies, Bardock removes Tora's armband (now soaked in blood) and ties it across his forehead, providing an emotional backstory for one of Bardock's most recognizable physical features.

Main article: Dragon Ball Legends The Pre-Bardock - The Father of Goku Tora is among the members of Team Bardock that end up taking part in the Tournament of Time on Earth in Age 780. Bardock from post the death of his teammates also ends up being transported to Age 780 and seeks to locate any of his teammates that ended up in Age 780.

However Bardock learns the Saiyan in Red is hunting and killing Saiyan participants. Due to the amnesiac Ancient Saiyan Shallot's resemblance, Bardock ends up confronting him until he discovers Shallot is innocent. While Bardock joins forces with Shallot to combat various threats such as Saiyan in Red, as well as Cooler and New Cell during the Super Cell Games.

During Shallot and Caulifla's search for Kale following the Super Cell Games, they end up encountering Tora and Fasha. Shallot notes Tora's scent smells like Bardock's blood stained bandana, unaware it is due to said bandana being soaked in the blood of Tora's deceased counterpart in Bardock's timeline of origin. Upon realizing they are Bardock's teammates, Shallot informs them where they can find Bardock.

Tora, Bardock, and Fasha confronting DRK Team Dodoria in Dragon Ball Legends

During the Organization of Babidi's attack on the tournament participants, Bardock, Tora, and Fasha end up being confronted by Dark Ki empowered Team Dodoria, which they manage to survive.

Tora and Fasha would later be recruited by Shallot's ally Zahha who had faked his death at the hands of the Saiyan in Red Giblet who is actually Shallot's twin brother. They join Bardock (who had arrived late) in combating the the Dark Ki controlled members of the Mastermind's group, that were trying to stop Shallot's Super Saiyan God ritual. Fortunately, Shallot's allies manage to hold them off, while he and his five Saiyan allies (Goku, Teen Gohan, Youth Future Trunks, Caulifla, and Cabba) complete the ritual.

Shallot would later encounter Borgos and Shugesh who end up helping Team Beerus deal with the threat DRK Kid Buu. Afterwards they reunited with the Tora and the others, creating their own base in a ruined city.

During Shallot and Cheelai's hunt for Broly they encounter Bardock fighting Combatants engaging in a "Saiyan Hunt". Realizing that a force that large would have one of the Frieza Force bigwigs leading the charge, Bardock rushes off to get back to his team's base where Tora, Fasha, Borgos, and Shugesh are holding down the fort. However, some Combatants impede his, Shallot, and Cheelai's progress, with the Combatants informing Bardock that Dodoria is leading the assault on the base.

Meanwhile, Tora, Fasha, Borgos, and Shugesh are fighting off the Combatants. Eventually, Dodoria shows up (who they discover is a different Dodoria than the one Fasha and Tora fought and the one that Borgos and Shugesh had slaved under when they first meet Shallot). Tora asks why they are hunting Saiyans, noting they are allies in their era of origin, causing Dodoria to reveal he is from the period after Team Dodoria's slaughter of Team Bardock and Frieza's Genocide of the Saiyans, revealing they're and the Saiyan race historical. Fortunately, they manage to defeat Dodoria's henchmen, however Dodoria knocks out Borgos and Shugesh, before preparing to slaughter Fasha and Tora, only for Bardock to make it in time to save his comrades. However, Dodoria reveals that Frieza has been informed of their location and is on his way, laughing as he believes their situation is hopeless, causing Tora to kill the injuried Dodoria in anger, ironically avenging himself and his teammates deaths during the events of Bardock - The Father of Goku.

Trivia[]

Frieza remembers Bardock

Bardock wearing the bandana in the Full Color Dragon Ball manga

  • His name is a pun on the word "tomato".
  • In the Episode of Bardock, Tora is wearing armor in the same style that Bardock wears, without the shoulder plating. This is not what he wore in his original death scene in Bardock - The Father of Goku.
  • In the Dragon Ball manga chapter "The Ultimate Battle Begins!", Bardock wears his blood-soaked armband as a bandana like in Bardock - The Father of Goku in Frieza's flashback (depicted in two panels) of their encounter during the Genocide of the Saiyans. However, in Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Bardock doesn't wear it when he confronts Frieza. It should be noted that "Dragon Ball Minus: The Departure of the Fated Child" (that Broly partially adapts into animation) does not actually show Bardock's encounter with Frieza like the Broly film thus this contradiction does not occur in the manga continuity.
