  • We know that Gohan, half saiyan, had a tail. So why not trunks? I dont think that Vegeta would let anyone remove his his son's tail. The same is with Bulla. Goten too has been shown without a tail. Why dont they have tails?

    • Vegeta nearly blew up Bulma and baby Trunks without remorse, I doubt he would care if he had his tail removed.

    • Bulma cut both Trunks and Bra/Bulla's tail, that's simple. Plus it is already said at the Android Saga when Goku ask when is Trunks' tail, same gone with Goten. (Not sure about Pan and Bra through)

    • The creator couldn't figure out how their tails worked in relation to pants, and so stopped drawing them.

    • I think tails are a recessive trait when it comes to half-saiyans. (still not sure about quarter saiyans like Pan, but it could possibly be the same situation with them as well) Bulla was obviously not born with a tail, as the viewers saw her birth. In following episodes after her birth in Super, she is never seen with a tail. Trunks didn't have a tail in DBZ when he was a baby either, and same with Goten too. Gohan must've gotten lucky with his tail, as he's the only half-saiyan on Earth with a tail. We know as a fact that pure-blooded saiyans (from Universe 7 that is) are always born with tails, so that biology must get a bit messed up when a saiyan has a child with a human. Also, I'm pretty sure that the lesser amount of saiyan blood that someone has in their body, the least likely they are to have a tail. Goku Jr. and Vegeta Jr. were not seen with a tail, and they are 1/16 saiyan. Pan was not seen with a tail either, and she's 1/4 saiyan. It must be more common with half saiyans, but of course, since tails are a recessive trait, that doesn't mean all half-saiyans will have tails. That's really all I can think of, I don't see any other reason why Trunks, Goten, and the others don't have a tail.

      1. Toriyama answered this question http://www.daizex.com/general/ask/archive/2003_10_12.shtml#6 sorta, going by this and the later explaination, it seems Toriyama was lazy and stopped drawing saiyan tails

2.In universe, Trunkses' tails got cut off by Bullmoose (becuase she knew about the oozaru), i don't know about Goten thought

"Plus it is already said at the Android Saga when Goku ask when is Trunks' tail" nope that was Kurilin, and there was no answer

BTW, Toriyama didn't know how to make female (non armor) oozarus so i assume Bra and Pan oozarus either:

      A)Are fully naked

      B)Have bra and panties......magic bikini? ^^'

The recessive thing wouldn't work here. Because the parents are both fullblooded (pure Saiyan and pure human), while the first generation of their half-Saiyan children would all have the same genotype of being hybrids. So if Gohan, Goten, Trunks, Bra all have the same genotype, it doesn't make sense that only Gohan displays it while all the other Saiyans don't. The recessive thing would only come into play when two half-breed parents have children, then 1 in 4 of their kids would have the recessive trait.

It's probably some more complex form of inheritance for tails like codominance or epistasis.

    • I doubt we can give an accurate semi-scientific explanation.

Toriyama was just feeling lazy and no longer interested in the tails, plus they were more of a weakness than a strength in DBZ and mentioning the characters trained their tails would likely feel like a bother to him.

If you want a quick genetic suggestion, maybe some of the tail's genes are present in the saiyan equivalent of the Y chromosome (which carries very little genetic material in humans) explaining why Pan nor Bra had it, and the ability to regenerate the tail becomes more limited and diluted in hybrids, explaining why Gohan only recovered his tail once and only in young age while Trunks and Goten never did so on-screen.

    • Now that I think about it, sex-linkage probably does make the most sense. Maybe the tail locus is on the tip so crossing over could easily with the X-chromosome and fail to get inherited? Otherwise why else would only Gohan get it, while Trunks and Goten don't? Though I think Goten was implied to have a tail but Gohan cut it off.

Do you thought Arabic dub of DBZ is canon and Gohan thought "Oh man better cut my dear younger brother's tail, or else he will summon his Oozaru"

    • No, because if it's a recessesove trait, then Gohan would never have had a tail

I already explained that just simple recessive inheritance wouldn't work here, because all of the half-Saiyan children have the same genotype, so either all of them have tails or don't. If we take the tail locus as "T-t", where "T" means they have no tail and "t" means they have a tail. Goku and Vegeta would have the genotype "tt" since he had a tail, while Chi-Chi and Bulma have "TT" for no tail. All of the first generation half-Saiyan children would have "Tt" since they are halfbreeds.

The recessive thing only works if two hybrid parents (both "Tt") have children. So that 1 in 4 of their children would possess the "tt" genotype.

I read it somewhere. And yes, of course it would have been to prevent the Oozaru thing.

    • I think Gohan has more of Saiyan characteristics than human characteristics when compared to Trunks, Goten or Bulla. If you look at it, Gohan was the one who was more prone to bouts of rage(courtesy of his Saiyan genes I guess). So it seems that Gohan's Saiyan half(Goku) was more dominant than his human half(Chi-Chi) resulting in him developing a tail. Trunks and Goten are comparatively more gentle than Gohan(Human characteristics are more dominant), but if you think about it, they might still have tails(albeit in a rudimentary state) and it might grow longer if they are out on a full moon night or exposed to a certain amount of Blutz waves(Remember Goku had his tail restored in GT by the Supreme Kai when it was simply pulled out). Another factor that can possibly influence the presence of tails in half saiyans is the Super Saiyan transformation. I believe that the Super Saiyan transformation is not just a power booster but it also a factor that involves in the biological evolution of Saiyans. The Oozaru transformation gives a Saiyan a tenfold power boost but the Super Saiyan gives a fiftyfold power boost. When a Saiyan achieves Super Saiyan, the necessity of the Oozaru transformation is completely negated since it not only gives a greater power boost but is also much more convenient(giving the impression that they have evolved). When Gohan was born, Goku was not a Super Saiyan, but when Goten was born, Goku was. So Trunks and Goten might have gotten the ability to transform into a Super Saiyan instinctively, because their respective fathers were one at the time they were conceived and born, and Gohan(also Future Trunks) had to struggle at becoming a Super Saiyan. Speaking of Super Saiyans, it is now mentioned that the factor necessary for the transformation is the S-Cells. The presence of the S-Cells can also be a factor for the tails to become a vestigial organ and be lost through evolution(as seen with Universe 6 Saiyans). Saiyans with a kind and gentle personality have more S-Cells, which is common among all the known hybrid Saiyans, and Gohan gained the S-Cells only at a later stage in life. This is my theory.

      I like this explaination better

"He forgot about tails by the time he came up with Goten and Trunks, and thus never bothered to explain the details of their tail situation"

Also the fact saiyans keep their tails in a waist is becuase Toriyama was getting lazy or bored drawing them

He even gave an explaination that saiyan's tail doesn't regrow once the saiyans become very strong

I think the BEST explaination why Trunkses and Bra doesn't have a tail, becuase Bulma removed them at birth fearing the return of Great Ape
