"...But that was then and this is now. I know you're ready, I can tell. You've been training like never before. Ok, now we just need to get the conditions right for you. After that, you might even reach Super Saiyan 5!" |
Super Saiyan 5 (超サイヤ人5 Sūpā Saiya-jin Faibu) is a hypothetical Saiyan transformation that was briefly mentioned in Dragon Ball GT.
Overview[]
The existence of this transformation was speculated on in Dragon Ball GT by Bulma in reference to her Blutz Wave Generator that she hoped would be enough to allow her husband, Vegeta, to ascend to Super Saiyan 4. After hearing this, Vegeta wondered if such a thing were possible and noted that with it, he would surpass Goku. In the original Japanese version, Bulma states that she believes Vegeta could "surpass Super Saiyan 4" - to which Vegeta refers to the possibility of a Super Saiyan 5 by name, while in the Funimation dub, Bulma is the one to first mention a possible Super Saiyan 5.[1]
Trivia[]
- The possibility of a Super Saiyan 5 was brought up in "Twel-Buu Mysteries", but Akira Toriyama made no comment on it.[2]
- In an interview with Funimation voice actors for the magazine, Anime Insider,[3] Mike McFarland made mention of what he believed a hypothetical Super Saiyan 5 would look like. “You know when Roshi turns all buff in Dragon Ball?” asks McFarland. “He looks like that, with long flowing, glowing half-black, half-blonde hair, and a monkey tail.” Script Supervisor Jeremy Carlisle then added in “And he rides a shark!”. Voice Actor Eric Vale then jokingly replied that his view of Super Saiyan 5 would be Gary Coleman.

Drawing of Spirit Killer Tablos, mistaking for "Super Saiyan 5 Goku"
- Super Saiyan 5 has no official appearance, though the most common appearance for it among fans would be a Super Saiyan 4 with silver hair and fur, with the hair coming down to the small of the back like Super Saiyan 3. The form was originally designed by David Montiel Franco who stated that this art wasn't even supposed to be Goku or Super Saiyan 5, but his own OC, Tablos, in a transformation he called Spirit Killer. The image was first published in the Spanish magazine, Hobby Consolas. This form would go on to represent Super Saiyan 5 after it was included in many other fan manga, most famously by Youngjiji and another by Toyotarou, the latter of which was scouted to aid author Akira Toriyama in the new Dragon Ball Super manga due to his work with his doujinshi "Dragon Ball AF", based on the concept Franco originally put forth. Despite this, most fans agree that if Super Saiyan 5 existed, it would be the design Toyatarou chose for his version in AF, given Toyatarou is now the new lead author of Dragon Ball after the passing of Toriyama.
- Gohan's Beast form could be considered a spiritual successor to Super Saiyan 5 due to the design and function of the form, though it also could be a call back to the fan transformation, Gohan Blanco, a theoretical form that also originated from Spanish speaking Internet circles, which turns Gohan's hair white.
