Due to the rageful and thus impure nature of the Super Saiyan transformation, a user of the Spirit Bomb runs the risk of being unable to gather energy for the technique. Thus, the user must begin gathering energy before transforming in order to then absorb the resulting Spirit Bomb's energy for themselves. Additionally, if the user has attained Super Saiyan Full Power and desensitized themselves to the initial negative effects of Super Saiyan, they are able to create a Spirit Bomb for absorption with far less struggle.
Both known users appear to have attained the form without realizing it, as Goku was unconscious while using it, and as such, his actions were not his own. After using the form, his aura increased in power and intensity to the point where Super Android 13 couldn't get close to him, as his fist nearly shattered and incinerated before he could touch Goku. Future Trunks created his Spirit Bomb at first without realizing the energy he was accumulating, and when he did absorb the Spirit Bomb to create the Sword of Hope, the energy left Fusion Zamasu astonished.
Goku utilizes this form in Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13! by transforming into a Super Saiyan while he creates a Spirit Bomb, and then proceeding to absorb the Spirit Bomb into himself because of the impurity in his heart caused by his Super Saiyan state. After Super Android 13 was halted by the other members of the Dragon Team from attacking Goku until it was too late, he attempted to strike Goku through the giant aura of energy, but his hands nearly disintegrated in the process. Goku then struck the android with Final Strike, punching through his chest and obliterating him.
In the final battle with Fused Zamasu, every human, plant, and animal on Earth unconsciously send their energy to Super Saiyan Rage Future Trunks, resulting in a Spirit Bomb appearing above him. Trunks then absorbs it, allowing him to create the Sword of Hope and slices Fused Zamasu in half.
While Future Trunks does not use this state in the manga version of the storyline, he does appear in it on the alternate cover for The Decisive Battle! Farewell, Trunks!.

- Similar to the effects of the S.S. Deadly Bomber, the negative risks of assuming the state as mentioned by Krillin due to rage creating impurity within the heart was only stated in the Japanese version, while in the Funimation dub, Krillin expresses surprise that Goku's heart retains its purity even as a Super Saiyan.
- This form's appearance in Super Android 13! may be the inspiration for the anime version of Ultra Instinct Sign, as Goku absorbed the Spirit Bomb and gained new powers and entered a state where he fights unconsciously. They also produce the same dual-voice, at least in the Japanese version, where Goku has the voice of the Great Ape alongside his grunts and screams.
- Interestingly Vegeta & Future Trunks, the two Z Fighters other than Goku capable of utilizing the Spirit Bomb Super Saiyan were coincidentally present when Goku used it in Super Android 13!.
