This article is about the demonic race. For other uses, see Serpent.

Serpents,[3] also known as Makyans[4] (魔凶まきょう星人せいじん Makyō-seijin, lit. "People from Planet Makyō"),[5] are the natives of the Makyo Star and are all members of a Demon Clan.[5] According to the English dub, the Serpents do not follow the natural order, seeking to tear it down.[3] The race goes unnamed in the original Japanese version.

The Serpent race is given a backstory in the English version of the anime, it is said by Kami that in every age, the Serpents have attempted to tear down the natural order only to have failed.[3]

Initially, the Serpents were comprised of only a handful of members, and among them were Garlic and Garlic Jr. Garlic is the notable creator of a portal to the Dead Zone.

Serpents are humanoids whose features vary, but of their most common traits are pointed ears and fangs. They have a natural transformation which causes extreme growth of the body and an increase in strength, seen in Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone and the Garlic Jr. Saga. Though it is unknown if this is common among the species, all the Serpents that appear in the series are evil and violent.

At some point, Garlic's ancestors came to Earth,[5] and Garlic eventually competed with the Nameless Namekian for guardianship of the planet but was denied the position by former guardian due to his evil ambitions for the Earth, which eventually led to him attempting to take the position by force and being sealed up for the remainder of his life. Garlic Jr. emerged a few hundred years later and twice attempted to avenge his father by killing Kami and fulfilling his father's dark dreams of ruling the Earth, only to find himself trapped inside the Dead Zone both times.

In Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn, Sansho is among the residents of Hell that escape with Frieza as a result of Janemba's alterations to reality. However, after Super Saiyan Gohan defeats Frieza with a single punch, Sansho is among the villains who flee out of fear of Gohan's power (which is somewhat fitting considering Gohan as a child was the nemesis of Sansho's former boss Garlic Junior).

The whereabouts of any other survivors of the Star's destruction is unknown. A look-alike of Mustard appeared as one of the members of the Frieza Force in the Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ manga.

Racial Abilities[]

Serpents possess magical abilities and have the potential to become Guardian of Earth. Ginger and Nicky's bodies contain Internal Weapons, which they can pull from themselves whenever they wish. Spice is capable of manipulating his hair for combat.

The Serpents draw power from the Makyo Star, with the star being the source of the race's power, becoming much more powerful the closer they are to its presence. Garlic Jr.'s power erupted from merely being on par with Goku and Piccolo from before their battle with Raditz, to being on par with Piccolo from after his fusion with Nail. Additionally, the Makyo Star's close presence allowed Spice to regenerate from the stab wound through his stomach, rejuvenated him and Vinegar and allowed them access to their Giant Forms. However, as a result of the star being the source of the race's power, its destruction renders them powerless.

Transformation[]

Super form[]

Gigantified Serpents: Vinegar, Garlic Jr, and Spice

Most Serpents can only take this form when the Makyo Star is nearby (as is the case with Spice and Vinegar), but some possess the capability to use it by themselves.[6][5]

Ginger, Nicky, and Sansho are capable of taking on this state independently of the Makyo Star by shouting out their signature phrase, however Daizenshuu 7 does not list them among the users of the form, while Daizenshuu 6 identifies the trio's giant transformation as being the same as Garlic Jr.'s.

The transformation is called Kyōdaika (lit. "Gigantification") in Daizenshuu 7, and the form is referred to as Garlic Jr.'s Super form in the Budokai Tenkaichi series. The transformation primarily increases their height and muscle mass, but sometimes there are secondary effects such as Vinegar's horns changing shape and Garlic Jr.'s color darkening and his head changing shape.

King of Destruction[]

In Dragon Ball Heroes and World Mission, Dark Energy allows Garlic Jr. to achieve his King of Destruction (破壊王 Hakai-ō, lit. "Destruction King") form. In this state, Garlic Jr. receives the Demon Mark on his forehead, loses his pupils, gains a dark aura that emits pink bioelectricity, and gains the ability to use the Mind Control CAA Special Ability.

Additionally, Ginger, Nicky, and Sansho can become Majins, gaining the Demon Mark on their forehead and dark aura though they retain their pupils, have a dark aura though without the pink bioelectricity.

Known members of the race[]

Garlic's demon army may also be made up of members of the race, given how much Serpents vary in appearance, and in the dub are outright stated to be members of the race. The Makyo Star allows many evil ghosts to manifest on Earth when it draws near,[8] these too may be members of the race.

Additionally, the Miniature Demons of Dragon Ball Z: Attack of the Saiyans resemble Garlic Jr. and so they too may be members of the race.
