Summary[]

Vegeta promises three hours for Goku to arrive
While Goku continues to fly across Snake Way towards the Check-In Station, he senses that things on Earth are not going well. On Earth, enraged over the loss of Chiaotzu, Tien Shinhan unleashes a furious attack on Nappa, but is unable to best him, especially with his one remaining arm. Nappa quickly turns the tables and pummels Tien, who refuses to give up. Krillin almost intervenes, but Piccolo stops him, preferring to wait for Nappa to let his guard down before attacking. Vegeta scoffs at their plan, but Piccolo cockily warns him that he will not be smiling once Goku arrives, piquing Vegeta's interest.
Nappa flies into the air and rockets towards Tien for the kill, but Piccolo and Krillin launch a surprise attack which topples Nappa. Gohan, unfortunately, becomes scared of Nappa's furious face, particularly after remembering the loss of Tien's arm, and runs for cover instead of firing a Masenko at Nappa. Piccolo and Krillin desperately fire at Nappa, but he dodges and rejoins them in the air, turning his attention to them.

Krillin and Piccolo as they both use Tri-Form against Nappa
Piccolo and Krillin decide to use the Tri-Form technique against Nappa, but due to their power levels being reduced to a third for each clone, they are unable to do any damage to Nappa, who still overwhelms them with his superior strength and speed. From the ground, Tien watches them and has a vision of Chiaotzu. Remembering his past adventures with Chiaotzu, especially his friend's death at King Piccolo's hands and subsequent revival, Tien forces himself to his feet and gathers all his strength and life force into a final, one-armed Tri-Beam which hits Nappa directly. Nappa, however, emerges from the smoke only with his Battle Armor severely damaged. Exhausted, Tien collapses and dies. In his grief, Krillin screams out to Goku, catching Vegeta's attention again.
As Nappa moves in to resume the battle, Vegeta stops him and asks laughingly if Goku is Kakarot, and scoffs at the possibility of Goku being able to defeat them after failing to defeat Raditz, who was far weaker than Vegeta and Nappa, but nevertheless grants a three-hour reprieve for Goku to join them. Nappa nearly resumes his attack anyway but stops when Vegeta angrily asks if Nappa is defying his orders, hinting to the Z Fighters that Vegeta's strength far outreaches Nappa's.

Differences from the manga[]
- Master Roshi and the others watching TV coverage of the battle is exclusive to the anime.
- The anime has an additional scene with Tien fighting Nappa in hand-to-hand combat before Piccolo and Krillin step in with their surprise attack.
- Piccolo and Krillin performing the Tri-Form on Nappa is exclusive to the anime.
- The anime initially has Kami lament to Mr. Popo that he feels his demise, and by extension Piccolo's, is drawing near with Popo than asking if Goku is coming soon, only to be told Kami cannot sense his approach. In the manga instead had Popo inquire on Goku's whereabouts first before Kami reveals that he and Piccolo are fated to die soon.
- In addition, the aforementioned scene occurs before Tien's sacrifice in the anime but occurs after the fact in the manga.
- The dialogue between Piccolo and Krillin as they face Nappa above-ground happens after Tien's death in the manga, with them deciding to return to the ground after their exchange. The anime moves the first half of their conversation to just after Nappa thwarts the Tri-Form assault and while Tien is still semi-conscious lamenting Chiaotzu's loss. There is also a bit in the manga of Krillin lamenting that they are all going to die after Piccolo admits he has no faith in their victory that was not included in the anime. Instead, once the latter dashes Krillin's hope, Nappa gloats that they've realized the extent of his power too late before he resumes the attack on the duo, during which Tien regains consciousness and fires his fatal blast.
- Tien having a vision of Chiaotzu apologizing for failing to kill Nappa and then reminiscing on his happier times with his fallen friend aren't in the manga. There is also Gohan attempting to awaken Tien before the aforementioned vision occurs that isn't in the manga.
- Once Krillin confirms Goku is Kakarot to Vegeta, in the manga, the Saiyan Prince muses that the latter-mentioned Z-Fighter must have indeed been resurrected via the Dragon Balls as was heard through Raditz's dying moments. The anime excludes this line.
- Nappa's initial refusal to take the three-hour break is slightly longer in the manga, with his reasoning being that his slumber during the Saiyans' trip to Earth has left his body hungry for action. The anime only has him bluntly refuse and immediately resume his charge before Vegeta shouts at him to stop.
- Gohan apologizes for his cowardice to Piccolo in the manga during the break, only for Piccolo to angrily dismiss and order him to go home if he isn't going to help, which Krillin defends since this is his first time in actual combat. The anime has Gohan's apology removed to him simply looking down in shame while other two berate and defend him respectively; Krillin being the first speak while Piccolo dismisses the former's argument.
Trivia[]
- After Chiaotzu sacrificed himself, Tien's flashback of Chiaotzu is shown out of order: a scene of Chiaotzu unconscious after he was beaten by Cyborg Tao in the preliminaries of the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament is shown, followed by a scene from the aftermath of the King Piccolo Saga with Chiaotzu being resurrected. These are not in the chronological order, as the post-King Piccolo scene happened first and the scene of him unconscious at the tournament comes later.
- This episode marks the first time Tien dies in the series.
- This episode shares its name with an episode of the Perfect Cell Saga, in which Tien nearly dies the same way as in this episode, but survives. In the original dub, the Perfect Cell Saga episode was the only episode with this title, and thus the first to be named "Sacrifice"; while all episodes from "Ginyu Assault" onwards were named the same as in the redub, the original dub equivalent to this episode was "Tien Goes All Out!!". This is an unusual occurrence of the same show having two episodes with the same title.
- When Nappa charges downwards towards Piccolo and Krillin before Vegeta stops him, his battle armor is fully intact despite being heavily damaged by Tien's Tri-Beam earlier. This is due to the footage being recycled from Nappa's skirmish with the former aforementioned Z-Fighters before Tien's death.
