Pure Progress (純粋なる成長 Junsui naru Seichō, lit. "Pure Growth")[2] is an improvement (成長 seichō, lit. "growth")[3][4] ability[5] which allows its user to rapidly improve their fighting performance.

Overview[]

A user with Pure Progress is able to continuously increase in fighting ability the longer they fight, similar to the Saiyans' natural battle potency. These effects mostly vary from user to user. Some may simply be able to rise in sheer strength and speed.[6] Others are able to imprint on their own experiences and grow via adaptation and improved fighting tactics and skillsets rather than power level, energy, physical strength, or conditioning.[3] Across all users of this ability, they were able to make rapid jumps in performance in relatively short amounts of time.

Usage[]

In Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ and its adaptations, Frieza's immense potential allowed him to massively increase his power in just four months, going from being weaker than Super Saiyan Goku on Namek to possessing a form stronger than Super Saiyan Blue Goku by the end of the training session. In the anime, a single training session with Tagoma was noted by the tyrant to have allowed him to reach a whole new level of power.

In the anime version of the Tournament of Destroyers, as Goku anticipates Hit's battle tactics to counter his 0.1 second Time-Skip, a pressured Hit was forced to adapt. While seemingly overwhelmed by Super Saiyan Blue Goku, the assassin revealed to have doubled the Time-Skip limit to intercept Goku. Hit then instantly adjusted his fighting style to maximize the usage of Time-Skip, which allowed him to advance his Time-Skip to 0.05 seconds, letting him launch a barrage of strikes before Goku could react. Once Goku overwhelmed Hit with his X10 Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken, Hit improves his Time-Skip to allow him to freeze an opponent by touching them while using Time-Skip, letting him dodge Goku's match-ending punch. In the manga Hit never needed to improve his Time-Skip beyond 0.1 seconds, as he could already increase the time beyond 0.1 seconds whenever he wanted to.[7]

In the anime version of Tournament of Power, the blazingly fast Dyspo who could detect and react to one's attacks simply from hearing the muscle movements made it difficult for Hit to use his Time-Skip. Despite the initial one-sided assault from Dyspo, Hit continues to adapt to the Pride Trooper's attacks, effectively blocking the critical strikes while letting the lesser one's land to better adapt. Later, against Jiren, the strongest being in Universe 11, Hit's continued adaptation allowed his body to memorize the timing of Jiren's counters, eventually allowing him to land a single blow on the Pride Trooper.

Ganos' straightforward attack style and sole dependence on raw might initially allow Master Roshi to easily analyze and anticipated Ganos' attack patterns, effortlessly countering the assault. However, as noted by Quitela, even mere minutes of struggle would cause a noticeable increase in power. This was proven as gradually, Ganos's sheer speed and power proved to grow too much for Roshi to keep up with. When Roshi attempted to use his Sleepy Boy Technique on the foe, a desperate Ganos badly injured himself to escape the hypnotic effects, noting that an even a few minutes ago he would not have lasted long enough. Despite his injuries, Ganos' increased might enabled him to still fight on.

In the anime, the Tournament of Power allowed the prodigy Frieza to increase his strength at a fast rate, as while prior to the tournament his True Golden Frieza state moved at the same speed as a full-powered Super Saiyan Blue,[8] less than an hour later he was much faster than one since Golden Frieza was able to outpace Dyspo's Light Bullet while Super Saiyan Blue Goku could not.[9] Additionally while prior to the tournament he struggled with a small Energy of Destruction orb,[8] by the near-end of the tournament he believed that based on that encounter he was now powerful enough to easily stop an even larger one with one hand.[10] In the waning moments of the tournament, Frieza, having been battered and even being forced out of his True Golden form, was able to fight against a battered but still powerful Jiren alongside Goku.[11]

Jiren grabs Goku

Jiren's speed increases to the point that he can grab Goku while he's in Ultra Instinct

In the manga, as Jiren was struggling against Perfected Ultra Instinct Goku, through the various solid blows Goku landed on the Pride Trooper, Jiren's determination and immeasurable potential let him quickly adjust to Goku's newfound abilities. Soon, he became able to counter even faster than before against Goku, allowing him to last long enough for Goku to lose his newfound power, albeit the struggle proved exhausting on Jiren's part, with his battle with Goku weakening him greatly.

By the time of Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Frieza has had significant growth in power.[4]

As Granolah gains battle experience from fighting powerful foes and being pushed to his limits, his moves become sharper and his strength grows, akin to how a Saiyan's battle prowess grows from fighting. His power also seems to grow when recovering from extensive injuries.

When Gas faced off against Granolah, having been wished to become the strongest in Universe 7 by the Cerealian Dragon Balls, he was initially outpaced by Granolah's superior skill with his heightened abilities. As the fight continued, Gas quickly became more accustomed to his own new abilities.

Owing to his status as Buu's reincarnation, Uub was able to increase both his combat skills and power at an alarming rate during his match with Goku in the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament.[12]

Video Game Appearances[]

In Shin Budokai - Another Road, Future Janemba possesses an unnamed variant of Pure Progress which causes his strength to increase after recovering from near death in a manner reminiscent of Saiyan Power.

XV2 - Hit using Pure Progress

Hit powering up as a result of his Pure Progress

Hit's Pure Progress seen in the anime appears and named in Xenoverse 2 as an Awoken Skill "transformation". Hit can go through his Pure Progress twice, and as in the anime, his stances change, so does in the game, becoming stronger in each one. After the 1.09.00 Update, Pure Progress appears as Hit's Awoken Skill in his custom skillset by default, though it can be unequipped via Partner Customization. As part of the Legendary Pack 1 DLC in Xenoverse 2, during Extra Mission 02: "Too Many Janembas!" the anomalous Supervillain•Future Janemba can utilize this variant to shave off more of his life span to regenerate and increase his Supervillain power of his to the point his Dimension Ray can one shot both Future Trunks and Future Pikkon.

Trivia[]

  • When describing how they uncovered this ability both Frieza and Hit's explanations are almost exactly the same, with both referring to how they had never considered or used this ability as there had never been any need to.
  • Vegeta likens this to the Saiyans' own natural ability to grow and develop, to which he was very annoyed that the growth rate of one using this ability seemed to exceed that of the Saiyans' after watching Hit's performance. Later, Master Roshi also notes a similar view, as he felt that Ganos' ability to grow could become a threat to even Goku and the others.
    • Broly later displays an ability identical to this, though on that is arguably even more potent, as he's able to quickly reach Vegeta and Goku's level post Tournament of Power in the span of a few hours. However, it is likely that said ability may simply be a heightened form of Saiyan Power (possibly due to his mutant Legendary Saiyan status), rather than a form of Pure Progress.
