Summary[]

Death Ball

Frieza charges a Death Ball

Goku continues gathering the energy for his Spirit Bomb as Piccolo valiantly attempts to stall Frieza. He attacks Frieza with a barrage of energy blasts, but Frieza is unharmed and brutally subdues Piccolo.

On King Kai's Planet, Yamcha, Tien Shinhan and Chiaotzu begin fighting the Ginyu Force, with Yamcha fighting Recoome, Tien fighting Burter and Jeice, and Chiaotzu fighting Guldo. At first, it seems the Ginyu Force has the upper hand, but the Dragon Team soon realize that their training with King Kai has greatly increased their strength and they turn the tables on the deceased villains.

GohanAndKrillinAfterAttackingFrieza

Gohan and Krillin attack Frieza

Piccolo quickly finds himself outmatched completely by Frieza and beaten to the point that he cannot stand up. Frieza prepares to finish Piccolo, but Gohan and Krillin each fire an energy blast at Frieza who only has time to barely block and withstand the surprise attack. Piccolo expressed surprise and impressment at the two doing so as he was under the impression that they didn't even have enough power left to do that. Frieza stares at the duo in disbelief, slowly building in rage to the point of making his own hands bleed in a furious clench. Frieza has had enough, with his patience for torment gone, the tyrant furiously declares his intent to reduce Planet Namek -- and everyone on it -- to dust. Raising a finger to the sky and laughing maniacally with an insane expression on his face, Frieza prepares to use a Death Ball to destroy Namek completely as he levitates upward. Just then, Goku finally completes the Spirit Bomb.

LargeSpiritBombOnFrieza

Frieza struggles to resist the Large Spirit Bomb

As Frieza rises to fire the Death Ball, he accidentally moves directly into the Spirit Bomb's vicinity, giving Goku the perfect opportunity to launch the Spirit Bomb. The four fighters, anticipating the immense explosive shockwave that would result from the successful detonation, then proceeded to "hit the dirt" to brace for the explosion. Frieza desperately tries to push the Spirit Bomb back, but is not strong enough and eventually, with a pained scream, is sucked into the Bomb's center as it explodes. Goku, Piccolo, Gohan and Krillin are blown away in the blast. Bulma alongside Ginyu were also knocked into a cliffside as a result of the detonation, with Ginyu humorously being crushed by Bulma's butt. King Kai senses this on his planet, and relays the news to his pupils and the Ginyu Force, who are delighted and skeptical, respectively.

The Spirit Bomb's explosion leaves a giant crater on Namek's surface, and the only ones who climb out are Gohan and Krillin, who are left wondering what has happened to Goku, Piccolo and Frieza.

Differences from manga[]

  • In the manga, the confrontation between Piccolo and Frieza begins and ends with Piccolo kicking Frieza into the sea. In the anime however Piccolo attempts to buy Goku more time, attacking Frieza with multiple energy blasts before Frieza easily beats him down.
  • The deceased members of the Ginyu Force and their appearance on King Kai's Planet along with their battle against Tien, Yamcha and Chiaotzu is filler that is exclusive to the anime.
  • Frieza's reaction to Gohan and Krillin's interference in the anime is more severe than in the manga, proceeding to laugh insanely as well clenching his fist hard enough to have his palm bleed out. Similarly, when overpowered by the Spirit Bomb, Frieza has veins bulge from his eyes in the anime, while he doesn't in the manga.

Trivia[]

  • Ironically, Frieza's actions when Goku launched the Spirit Bomb at him were very similar to what happened when Goku's father Bardock confronted him.
  • In the original dub, when Krillin says "What's he trying to do? He can't win!" and "He must be trying to stall Frieza while Goku powers up the Spirit Bomb.", he has a slight Italian accent.
  • Possibly due to an oversight, in the remastered dub, Dale Kelly's voice was retained as Captain Ginyu for this episode instead of Brice Armstrong redubbing over him.
