Powerhouse[2] is an enhanced state where the user has increased power, though with a downside.

Overview[]

Utilizing a Powerhouse state causes the user to use up energy and stamina at a rapid rate in exchange for increased power. By pushing it even further, the user can gain more power but at the cost of speed. The power of this state causes the user's muscles to bulk up. In some cases, it can even directly lead to the user's death if the strain is high enough.

Usage[]

With the basic Super Saiyan form, the first Powerhouse state is the Super Saiyan Second Grade and the second Powerhouse state is the Super Saiyan Third Grade.

Vegeta and Trunks both use Super Saiyan Second Grade without sacrificing their speed, overpowering second form Cell but failing to damage Perfect Cell. After Vegeta is beaten, Trunks takes on the Third Grade, unknowingly shattering his speed advantage in favor of raw strength and manages to go toe-to-toe with Cell for a short while.

After matching Trunks' Third Grade form, Cell demonstrates his own Powerhouse form of Super Saiyan Third Grade, which he does to display to Future Trunks the flaws inherent in the form during their battle, leading to Trunks giving up against him. Later, however, during the Cell Games, when overpowered by Super Saiyan 2 Gohan, Cell becomes enraged to the point of deliberately using Super Saiyan Third Grade himself in a hybrid bulk-up with Great Namekian, drastically raising his strength and decreasing his speed while still remaining unable to land any blows to Gohan.

In the manga, Fused Zamasu powers up his Super Saiyan Rosé state greatly in an attempt to finish Perfected Super Saiyan Blue Goku, overflowing his power to the point that - according to Vegeta - even his immortal body would take damage.

Power Stressed Saganbo

Saganbo with his power pushed to the limit

In the anime during the Tournament of Power, Caulifla used this form to fight Goku, but she was unable to hit him due to lowered speed and overused stamina. She then stopped using this form when Goku explained the drawbacks, after which he showed her the more preferable Super Saiyan 2 form.

In the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga, Saganbo takes on a powerhouse state as a result of Moro continuously powering him up but is unable to properly fight Super Saiyan Blue Goku and perishes from the bodily stress.

Goku manages to force Ultra Instinct Sign into a Powerhouse state in attempt to compromise his evasive instinct for the form's overwhelming power, though finds himself unable to break past his limit and is beaten by Moro.

Variations[]

  • Kaio-ken[3] - A power up which puts stress on the body in exchange for multiplying its power.
    • Blue Kaio-ken - The application of the Kaio-ken to the Super Saiyan Blue form.
  • Super Saiyan Second Grade – The first Powerhouse Super Saiyan form.
  • Super Saiyan Third Grade – The second Powerhouse Super Saiyan form.
    • Perfect Form (Power-Weighted) – Cell's unique giant Powerhouse form. In Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission, it is called Cell (Perfect, Powerhouse).
    • Super Saiyan Rage - A powered up version of Super Saiyan 2. Undergoing a Powerhouse transformation is necessary as part of the transformation into this state, but not in all uses.
  • Legendary Super Saiyan - The fully powered Legendary Super Saiyan form is classified as a Powerhouse state, drastically increasing not only the user's muscle mass and power level, but their overall skeletal size as well. However, the form appears to lack the typical drawbacks inherent in most Powerhouse forms, and its speed is described as "ultra-first-class".[4][5] Additionally, at least in the case of Broly, the increased power drain appears not to be an issue either.
  • Ultra Instinct Sign (Powerhouse) - Ultra Instinct Sign can be bulked up, sacrificing its true strengths for raw power.

Video Game Appearances[]

This power up is named Powerhouse (Power Stressed) in Dragon Ball Heroes and Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission.

Trivia[]

  • Saganbo is the first person to die directly as the result of using Powerhouse (Power Stressed) form.
