Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan

Paragus (パラガス Paragasu) is the father of Broly. He appears as the secondary antagonist in Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan.

Appearance[]

Xeno P

Xeno Paragus

Paragus is one of the few Saiyans shown to wear Battle Armor different to that of Frieza's employ; Paragus's armor vaguely resembles that of Goku's Yardrat outfit. The armor he wears frequently changes colors throughout various flashbacks. Also, in one case, it looks like he was not wearing any armor. He also wears a white collared cape that touches the ground and covers the right half of his body. Because of Broly's actions during his childhood, Paragus' left eye was injured and has a scar running from his left eyebrow to his cheek at the time of Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan.

Xeno Paragus (パラガス :ゼノ Paragasu: Zeno) is shown to be wearing a black Battle Armor, with green under the chest component. He wears a black undershirt, a red cape, and red gloves. Noticeably, his eyes are now bloodshot and he wears a variant of the Time Breaker Mind Control mask shaped as his eye patch.

Personality[]

Paragus is never seen fighting in the movies. Unlike the typical pure-blood Saiyan who enjoys the thrill of battle of any kind, Paragus is never seen battling nor does he condone his son's violent behavior. Paragus is a somewhat patient strategist, luring Vegeta to the doomed planet first before setting in motion any plans to kill him. On a similar note, he was also shown to be pragmatic, as he decided to settle for exacting revenge on Vegeta as "the next best thing" due to his father King Vegeta having been killed during the Saiyan Genocide and thus was unavailable, and also implies when admitting to his plot against Vegeta that part of the reason he set up the plan against Vegeta and the Z-Fighters besides revenge was so he'd easily take over Earth without risking irreparable damage to the planet. He also has some attachment to his son as he begs King Vegeta for mercy for his baby son and, years later, he feels some regret for having to abandon his insane son on a doomed planet (although the Funimation dub tones this regret down by implying that he was abandoning him specifically because he could no longer control him, although he does still express some reluctance towards abandoning Broly). He is also a good actor able to conceal his true nature from others. However, he is just as ruthless as most other Saiyans and willing to kill in cold blood or just for the fun of it, having controlled Broly to enslave Shamoians while killing his loyal subordinate Moah for no notable reason. In the Japanese version, he committed his aforementioned murder of Moah after the latter promised to not reveal Paragus's plans to anyone else as a means of ensuring the latter's silence, hinting at a more paranoid nature to him.

Xeno Paragus' hatred of Xeno King Vegeta was such that, in the game, upon discovering that the Dark Masked King's true identity was in fact Xeno King Vegeta, despite being allied with him at the time, he attempted to capitalize on the opportunity presented to him and kill the King as revenge, but to no avail.

Biography[]

Background[]

Broly (young)

Paragus attempts to restrain his dangerous son Broly

Prior to Planet Vegeta's destruction, Paragus had been a high ranking Saiyan warrior loyal to King Vegeta; his high social position is evidenced by him being allowed to talk directly to King Vegeta should the latter require his presence.[6] When King Vegeta realizes the power of Paragus' son, Broly, he orders Broly to be executed. Paragus tries to plead with him, stating that Broly is only a child and can even grow into an extremely valuable ally for the King's son Vegeta, but his pleas fell on deaf ears and King Vegeta blasts him with his Execution Beam. Both Paragus and his son are then thrown out like garbage. Ironically, on the same day, Frieza destroys Planet Vegeta for exactly the same reason as the King's attempted execution of the duo, and Broly uses a sphere of his own power to protect himself and Paragus, transporting them to another planet. Paragus apparently at least knew of Bardock, since he automatically recognizes Goku as Bardock's son, and it can be thought that Paragus was Bardock's superior according to the Supplemental Daizenshuu.[6]

YoungParagus

Paragus attempting to place the controller crown onto his sleeping son

Paragus raises Broly, who grows up violent and destructive, killing and destroying everything in his path uncontrollably. Paragus lost whatever control he had over his son when Broly reached his teens, leading to an incident in which Broly gouged out his father's left eye with a single elbow strike. After the incident, Paragus eventually has a scientist create a mind-control device capable of restraining, and controlling Broly's rage and power. In an attempt to place the controller crown onto his sleeping son, Paragus had to struggle when Broly woke up. With the device working perfectly, Paragus gains control of his son's immense power and plots to rule the universe.

Super Dragon Ball Heroes[]

At some point, Paragus is revived or saved by the Dark Empire in order to be integrated into their ranks, becoming Xeno Paragus. He is brainwashed in order to help brainwash his son Broly in turn, who was embedded with a Dark Dragon Ball.

Paragus trying to control Broly

In the manga, he uses his powers in support of Towa to control Dark Broly, but they find it impossible to do so. When Xeno Goku appears, the rage that Dark Broly feels towards him causes his power to grow. Xeno Paragus attempts to stop him one final time but Dark Broly strikes him hard and sends him through one of the space distortion portals.

In the game, Xeno Paragus finds Dark Broly asleep in the depths of Hell, and places a Time Breaker mask on him. After his meeting with Towa is interrupted by the Time Patrol, he distracts them while Towa leaves to control Dark Broly.

Xeno Paragus overpowered

In the manga, Xeno Paragus finds himself on an asteroid somewhere, free from his brainwashing and finding it ironic that he was mind-controlled. Regaining his sense of self and determined to save his son, he resists assassination from the Dark-Masked King, but is unable to make any headway in the battle. Right as he is about to be destroyed, Xeno Bardock intercepts the king, allowing Xeno Paragus to retreat behind a rock formation. He and Xeno Bardock are both shocked when the Dark-Masked King reveals himself to be Xeno King Vegeta. Xeno Paragus then watches as Xeno Bardock and Xeno King Vegeta clash, before assisting Bardock by stabbing King Vegeta when he attempts to retaliate against Bardock's strike, hoping to end his old grudge with the sneak attack. Unfortunately, Xeno King Vegeta blasts him on the spot, Xeno Paragus expressing regret that he was unable to save Broly as he is engulfed in energy and destroyed.

In the game, Xeno Paragus assists in the defense of Mechikabura's tower, alongside the Dark-Masked King, fighting the Time Patrol and later Xeno Bardock. After Xeno Bardock is overwhelmed by the Dark-Masked King, revealed to be Xeno King Vegeta, Paragus betrays him and takes him out with a sneak attack, though at the cost of his own life.

Film appearances[]

Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan[]

Main article: Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan He comes up with a plan to get revenge on the Vegeta family by luring Prince Vegeta to a ruined planet, naming it New Planet Vegeta, in the way of the massive Comet Camori, which would destroy the planet and kill everyone on it in the process. Paragus chooses to use some desolate planet because he desires to use Earth as his base of operation, and can not risk damaging it in the process. As part of his plan to deceive the Saiyan prince, Paragus has Broly capture the Shamoian as slaves after devastating their home planet Planet Shamo, forcing them to create a palace on the planet to make it look more convincing. Presumably, he also had Broly transform into his Super Saiyan form when attacking the planet in order to further sell the act.

Paragus3

Paragus on New Planet Vegeta

Paragus kills one of his soldiers, Moah, when the latter says he is afraid after he discovered Paragus' plan to let Comet Camori destroy New Planet Vegeta. When Broly makes contact with Goku, the former starts to slip out of his father's control due to past trauma. With each successive control waning further, Paragus' fears come to full when his plan is exposed to Vegeta. Broly loses all restraints when he breaks the crown and goes berserk, attacking Goku and the others. Paragus changes his plans to have Broly attack the Dragon Team, but is horrified when Broly is not responding to the crown anymore, immediately prior to Broly's transformation into a Legendary Super Saiyan. With that, Paragus claims that his plans of ruling the universe with Broly has come to an end. After witnessing the Z Fighters' defeat at his now uncontrollable son, he attempts to escape the planet in his escape pod, while expressing regret in regards to having to abandon Broly to his fate. Unfortunately for him, Broly approaches just as the door closes, and after ignoring his father's desperate lie of preparing to seek shelter together, Broly kills him by crushing the pod and then throws it into the approaching comet. Just before dying, Paragus laments on the fate of a Saiyan being killed by his own child who, in all irony, once saved his life.

Broly - Second Coming[]

Main article: Dragon Ball Z: Broly - Second Coming While he didn’t appear in the movie itself, a flashback of Paragus being saved by Broly during Planet Vegeta’s destruction is shown at the start of the end credits of the film, and scenes from the fight between Goku and Broly on New Planet Vegeta were shown during the end credits as well.

Paragus appears with other dead villains in Fusion Reborn

Paragus escaped from Hell after the barrier separating the dimensions vanished by the doing of Janemba. He was ironically ordered by Frieza to attack Gohan but Gohan one-punched Frieza, causing fear into the escaped enemies so they fled. Paragus was later sent back to Hell after Janemba was defeated by Gogeta.

Other Dragon Ball stories[]

Super Battle Stage[]

Paragus and his son are the main antagonists in the 2010 live action battle show Dragon Ball Kai: Super Battle Stage, which is loosely based on the 1993 movie Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan.

Power[]

Films

Paragus is not very strong compared to Goku, Vegeta, or his own son, Broly. During the time of the Genocide of the Saiyans, Paragus was nearly executed by King Vegeta via his Execution Beam, though he managed to survive the attack and likely gained a Zenkai from it. Paragus was later said to be stronger than a suppressed mind-controlled Broly, with Future Trunks confirming the claim earlier by ruling out Broly as being the Legendary Super Saiyan as the latter was "a toothpick". Paragus was also superior in rank to Bardock prior to the destruction of the Saiyans, thus being a Saiyan from the mid-class level. While outfitting Broly with the crown, he also was shown to be able to pin Broly down long enough to outfit him with the crown before being knocked back by his mad son.

Manga

In the manga, Xeno Paragus is helpless against Xeno King Vegeta and is easily beaten, even with a sneak attack where he stabs the dark king, Xeno King Vegeta simply shrugs it off and obliterates Xeno Paragus.

Video Games

Thanks to the Time Breaker power up, Xeno Paragus is more powerful than before - though in the trailer for SH7 he and Demon Goddess Towa are completely overwhelmed in their attempts to take control over Dark Broly and Xeno Paragus is knocked away by him. Xeno Paragus later knocked out Xeno King Vegeta, though the king was heavily weakened from his fight with Xeno Paragus and King Vegeta was able to kill Paragus before going down.

List of Characters Killed by Paragus[]

Trivia[]

  • His name is a pun on the vegetable "asparagus."
  • Paragus apparently knows full well who Future Trunks is, although this seems to be a major plothole, as Trunks is never properly introduced by name to Paragus and is from the future, not the current time. A possible explanation is that spies informed Paragus that Vegeta had a son called Trunks, but did not mention his age, and so Paragus simply believed Future Trunks was Vegeta's son from the present.
    • Alternatively he has been observing Vegeta, Future Trunks, and the Brief family remotely like the Frieza Force did to the Dragon Team after Frieza's death according to Sorbet in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’. This would also fit with his vendetta against the last remnants of the House of Vegeta as he is unable to get revenge on King Vegeta directly due to his death.
  • Paragus has similarities to Caulifla.
    • They both try to control the Legendary Super Saiyan of their Universes (Broly and Kale).
    • They both try to prevent Broly and Kale from becoming insane after witnessing their transformation into the Legendary Super Saiyan.
    • Without Paragus and his devices, Broly goes completely insane just as Kale would lose control of her form without Caulifla.
      • Unlike Paragus and Broly, however, Kale remained loyal to Caulifla.
  • Not surprisingly, Paragus shares many traits in common with his canon counterpart as both are Saiyans with a vendetta against the House of Vegeta for King Vegeta's treatment of their incarnation of Broly whom they control via a special device (Broly's Ring in his case, Broly Control Mechanism for his canon counterpart, though in his canon counterpart's case Broly maintained his free will and served his father out of unconditional love and loyalty with the control collar being used to punish and discipline him when he lost control), and both are killed by someone they are technically allied with (Broly in his case, Frieza in the case of his canon counterpart).
  • Paragus is one of several movie antagonists to kill one or more of their underlings, a trait he shares with Lord Slug, Bojack, and ironically his canon counterpart's killer Frieza (who kills several members of the Frieza Force in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ and Paragus in Dragon Ball Super: Broly).
    • However in Frieza's case, his habit of killing his underlings had already been well established in both the anime and manga, with the best known example of this being the Genocide of the Saiyans (an event Paragus himself ironically survived thanks to his son, as shown in his flashback in Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan).
    • Similar to Paragus' plans to use Broly to create their own Saiyan Empire in Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan, Frieza in Broly sought to use the Broly (DBS) to help him reestablish the Frieza Force's control over Universe 7, killing the Paragus (DBS) so Broly (DBS) could achieve Super Saiyan C-type (though similar to how the Legendary Super Saiyan form led Broly to kill his father, the canon Broly ironically ended up attacking Frieza due to his inability to tell friend from foe in his Super Saiyan form as canon Broly was unaware of Frieza's role in his father's death).
  • The exact reason why Paragus murdered Moah differed between versions. In the Japanese version, Moah had stumbled upon Paragus's mad declaration that Comet Camori was to collide with the planet and fearfully told Paragus he will make sure no one else knows what will happen (implying that even Paragus's own forces were in the dark about the true scope of Paragus's plans), with Paragus deciding to ensure his silence by killing him. The English dub instead indicates that Paragus killed him for showing fear over Comet Camori's impending arrival.
  • Although not directly stated, it is likely that Paragus had Broly destroy the South Area some time after outfitting the latter with the crown, due to King Kai's reaction at the beginning of the film to the galaxy's destruction indicating such had occurred very recently.
  • Xeno Paragus is the only incarnation of Paragus to attempt to exact revenge against the person directly responsible for his misfortune, King Vegeta, as both the original and Super counterparts were forced to settle with exacting revenge on his son due to King Vegeta himself having already perished from Frieza's attempted genocide.
  • Paragus and his Super counterpart are the last Saiyans of their generation to die.
