- This article is about the character portrayed in live action by Ian Whyte. For the original transformation, see Great Ape.
Oozaru (大猿 Ōzaru, lit. "Great Ape") is a character in the 2009 film Dragonball Evolution. He is an adaptation of the Great Ape, a transformation assumed by members of the Saiyan race in Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball franchise and is portrayed by Ian Whyte.
Creation and Concept[]
The original version of the Oozaru in the movie adaptation looked nothing like the final version. This version was even filmed and when fans found out about it, there was so much negative feedback that the studio added in the CG Oozaru.
Unlike in Akira Toriyama's original franchise, the transformation in Dragonball Evolution is triggered by a solar eclipse rather than staring into a full moon, and its user does not require the tail of a Saiyan to transform. This transformation is also a lot smaller than the Great Ape form.
Biography[]
Roshi describes Oozaru as one of two gods who, along with Piccolo, nearly destroyed the Earth two-thousand years prior. However, Piccolo and his disciple Oozaru's reign ended after seven mystics sealed Piccolo in the Mafūba. While Oozaru's whereabouts after this are uncertain, a prophecy asserts that he will return during a solar eclipse, and as Piccolo reveals, during this eclipse Goku, who "traveled by meteor to hide among the vermin until [his] eighteenth birthday," will be reborn as Oozaru. When Piccolo's explanation becomes true, Goku, as Oozaru, attacks Bulma, Yamcha, and then Roshi before coming to his senses and regressing too normal. Goku accepts that Oozaru is inside him, and a battle between him and Piccolo ensues.
Techniques and Special Abilities[]
- Gigantic Rock Throw - One of Oozaru's Super Attacks in Dragonball Evolution: The Game.
Video Game Appearances[]
Oozaru makes a playable appearance in Dragonball Evolution: The Game. In the Story Mode, Oozaru fights against Yamcha, Bulma and Roshi before fighting against Goku in Goku's Inner World, a space-like environment inside Goku's mind.[1]
The introduction to his Arcade Mode explains that all Saiyans possess the ability to turn into Oozaru.
Trivia[]
- The first version of the Oozaru is in the toy line. If you buy all the Dragon Ball Evolution toys, you get all the pieces to make it. This toy however has even a completely different outfit: it appears to be wearing Battle Armor.
- Ironically, Oozaru shares his epitaph The Destroyer with God of Destruction Beerus from Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (a film which Akira Toriyama made in response to Dragonball Evolution).
