Minus Energy is a deadly energy generated by the Dragon Balls.

Overview

Minus Energy is a byproduct of the Dragon Balls' wish-granting capabilities. Whenever a wish is made, an equal amount of Minus Energy is created alongside the beneficial wish-granting energy. To prevent this energy from causing problems, the Dragon Balls absorb this dark energy. The dark energy stored in the Dragon Balls disperses only after 100 years, and the Dragon Balls can only store a limited amount of it. After being used to make a wish, the Dragon Balls scatter across the planet, giving them time to dispel the dark energy harmlessly (since it is expected that it would take years for someone to find all the Dragon Balls and summon Shenron again, especially since most people do not know about their power).

Unfortunately, increasingly advanced technology (such as the Dragon Radar) made finding the artifacts a simple task. Moreover, a seemingly endless succession of powerful villains forced the defenders of Earth to use the Dragon Balls just to repair the damage done to the planet and its people. Consequently, the Balls had less and less time to disperse the negative energy, causing a large amount of it to build up in the Dragon Balls. When the Balls could take no more, they cracked. Upon attempting to summon the Eternal Dragon, however, Goku and the others unknowingly released the negative energy in the form of a dark Dragon named Black Smoke Shenron, who separated into the seven Shadow Dragons, each taking form around one Ball.

With each Shadow Dragon's defeat, their associated Dragon Ball was purified of Minus Energy, until they were consumed by Syn Shenron to assume his Super Shadow Dragon form, Omega Shenron. Near the end of his battle against the Z Fighters, Omega released the Minus Energy in the form of dark clouds, spreading across the Earth and causing massive disasters on a global scale. Ultimately, however, Omega is destroyed by the Super Ultra Spirit Bomb, dispersing the Minus Energy and restoring the Dragon Balls to their normal states.

Variations

• Plus Energy - The positive inverse of the dark Minus Energy. As Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta describes it, it can be created by using one's own energy to change the polarity of Minus Energy, and can even cancel out Minus Energy once formed, in a "positive + negative = zero" interaction. Gogeta used his Plus Energy to counter Omega's Negative Karma Ball, composed entirely of Minus Energy. Later, after swallowing the Four-Star Dragon Ball, Goku's Plus Energy counteracted the Minus Energy Omega had previously instilled in the artifact, resulting in the reborn Nuova Shenron fighting on the side of good.
