This article is about the original character. For the character portrayed in live-action by Chow Yun-Fat, see Roshi/Dragonball Evolution.

"Goku... Krillin... You're the ones who showed this old fossil he still had something left to give. That it was too soon to let the limits of age sentenced him to sit idly by on the sidelines. You boys who were never content to stop, who kept aiming for and climbing greater and greater heights want me to take it easy? Now listen to me boys! Always remember these words: Work hard! Study well! And eat and sleep plenty. That is the Turtle Hermit way! We must master the art of peace in addition to the art of war! The Turtle Hermit School will be with you...always! This will be my greatest, most powerful Kamehameha!"
— Master Roshi towards Goku and Krillin in "A Valiant Fight! Master Roshi's Blaze of Glory!"

Master Roshi (てんろう Muten Rōshi, lit. "Old Heavenly Martial Arts Master"), also known as the Turtle Hermit (かめせんにん Kamesen'nin) and God of Martial Arts (武道の神様 Budō no Kamisama), is a master of martial arts, who trained Gohan, Ox-King, Goku, Krillin, and Yamcha. He has a sister named Fortuneteller Baba. He is also a hermit and a pervert.

In his youth he was simply called Turtle ( Kame).[5]

Appearance

Master Roshi is bald, with a thick white fu manchu mustache and beard. He is almost always seen wearing his trademark sunglasses; some time later Master Roshi left his old sunglasses and began to wear more futuristic ones. He wears beach clothes or a martial arts suit and a Turtle Shell on his back. He usually wields a walking stick. His bust, waist and hip measurement are all 73cm.[6]

In Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, Master Roshi wears a pink shirt and white shorts with flip flops. In Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’, Master Roshi wears a white tank top and green flip flops.

When he was a teenager while training under Master Mutaito and Korin, it is shown that he had black hair and wore a black pair of sunglasses along with a bluish purple Qipao style martial arts uniform. He was also noted by Bulma to be very handsome, shocked to see how Roshi turned out in old age. During the King Piccolo wars, his head was shaven and he wore a purple Mutaito Training Academy Gi like the rest of Mutaito's students at the time including Master Shen. He also did not wear any sunglasses during this time.

In Dragon Ball Super, Master Roshi wears the pink shirt outfit in the God of Destruction Beerus Saga and the white tank top outfit in the Golden Frieza Saga as he did in the movies.

During the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga, while acting as a Deputized Galactic Patrolman, his white shirt similar to the one he wore during the Tournament of Power features the Galactic Patrol symbol.

Personality

"But, you know, my lessons don't come free. You must find me a young gal! It's the only way I can start training you."
— Master Roshi towards Goku in "Goku's Rival"

Roshi nose bleeding

Roshi gets a nose bleed after seeing Bulma lift up her nightgown

Master Roshi is over three hundred years old at the start of the series and provides various stories to explain his longevity. Roshi enjoys eating home delivered pizza,[3] which serves as a tongue-in-cheek joke because Roshi lives so far out into the ocean. He also enjoys reading, watching TV, using the internet (mainly for adult sites), playing video games and taking afternoon naps.[3] He is a very lecherous pervert who constantly watches Wide-Thigh Aerobics on television or looks at Dirty Magazines in his spare time. He even accepts a bribe from Bulma to show him her panties in exchange for a Dragon Ball early in the series (and got a very big surprise, as Bulma unknowingly was not wearing any panties when she exposed herself). Master Roshi often makes humorous sexual advances on any beautiful woman he can get close enough to; usually Bulma or Launch in Dragon Ball or MaronAndroid 18, or Chi-Chi in Dragon Ball Z. He firmly believes that he is the ultimate stud and very cool, even though his fashion sense and mannerisms seem to be at least a few generations out of style. His lechery is apparently a relatively recent development, as he was once able to ride the Flying Nimbus, an ability he has lost by the time he passes it on to Goku. Although he is dedicated to training his students in the way of the Turtle School, he will nonetheless tell off his students when they are practicing the Kamehameha wave because the water is ruining his magazines. The only time he did not tell off one of his students for this when practicing the Kamehameha wave was when Krillin tried to practice it in order to get his mind off his breakup with Maron, partially because he was asleep when it happened.

Master Roshi angry

Master Roshi wishing he could have done something to prevent the death of his students

Roshi cares deeply for his students to the point he entered the World Martial Arts Tournament in the guise of a martial named "Jackie Chun" to ensure they would lose the tournament as he felt they might lose interest in the martial arts if they won it too easily due to the great strength they had obtained through his training. While this may have been true for a fellow Earthling martial artist like Krillin, Roshi was unaware that Goku was actually a Saiyan who would never lose interest in fighting due to the Saiyan's inborn love of fighting until many years later after the arrival of Raditz, though through a story he heard from Goku's Grandpa Gohan he did known that Goku was the elder Gohan's adoptive grandson and may have suspected the boy's potential alien origins from the story Gohan told him. As a result, Roshi found a tough opponent in the young Saiyan and it took all of his skill, power, and abilities to defeat Goku during final match of the tournament. Also during the tournament he showed compassion to Nam by explaining he did not need the prize money to buy water after he was defeated by Goku and gives him a capsule to store water from a well, although in exchange for his help Roshi asks Nam to help him protect his secret identity from his students by having him impersonate Master Roshi in the audience and convince his students that Jackie Chun and Master Roshi were separate people. He is also shown to be quite intelligent as he managed to figure out the Moon was the cause of Goku's Great Ape transformation and correctly deduced that destroying it would cause Goku to return to normal and prevent any further transformations (Piccolo would later use this very same tactic in Dragon Ball Z to stop Gohan's transformation in the Vegeta Saga as well as prevent Nappa and Vegeta from using the Moon to transform). Despite his skirt-chasing antics, Master Roshi is still a very wise and kind-hearted person who loves those around him like his own grandchildren. He openly enjoys life and its simple pleasures, but is willing to die for an honorable cause if necessary. Despite being immortal Roshi dies when attempting to utilize the Evil Containment Wave against King Piccolo (who was freed during the King Piccolo Saga), which shows that his immortality only prevents him from dying from old age and thus is not completely immortal. He appears in most of the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z movies, usually as comic relief, though in The World's Strongest and Resurrection ‘F’ he actively participates in the fight alongside the other Z Fighters.

In Dragon Ball Super, it is implied that the Paradise Herb is the source of Master Roshi's unnaturally long life. He claims that eating some of it will allow him to live on for another 1,000 years.

In the Universe Survival Saga of Dragon Ball Super he is recruited as a member of Team Universe 7 after Goku fights Master Roshi at 100% MAX Power when he is turned into a Jiang Shi controlled by Yurin. It is revealed that Master Roshi had secretly been training, and even Goku is surprised at how powerful he is and is excited by the idea of fighting his former master again when he is serious (Goku is still unaware that he fought Roshi in the World Martial Arts Tournament, having never learned that Master Roshi was Jackie Chun).

During the Tournament of Power, Roshi's compassion for his students and tactical fighting style were made prominent when he focused on eliminating the trickier fighters (such as Dercori), knowing that Goku (and his teammates by extension) were prone to getting tripped up by deceptive foes. In addition, he was wary of fighters such as Ganos who rapidly improved their fighting performance and sought to deal with them before they became a threat to Team Universe 7. He was also willing to put his life on the line to eliminate Ganos by using a Kamehameha powered by his own life energy. This compassion was reciprocated by his students, who were both desperate to save Roshi when he nearly passed away afterwards (Goku succeeding in doing so and tearfully embracing him when he got back up).

In the manga version of the tournament, Roshi's influence on Goku extended more directly to his fight against Jiren when Roshi himself confronted the Pride Trooper in order to teach Goku a valuable martial arts lesson, reminding him about the Turtle School way and the advice of his other mentors before using his experience to briefly and surprisingly outmaneuver Jiren. Despite Jiren eliminating Roshi soon after, the hermit's words impacted Goku so greatly that it enabled him to tap into a sign of the answer Roshi told him to search for, ultimately allowing Goku to - as Roshi taught him - conquer himself. In addition, during the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga, it was mentioned by Merus that Ultra Instinct would activate when the user achieved self-control in the face of a jarring shock to their emotions, further pronouncing Goku's value of Roshi's teachings.

Biography

Background

Master Roshi, the younger brother of Fortuneteller Baba, is a martial artist trained by the great Master Mutaito a few hundred years before the beginning of Dragon Ball. He was the first one to climb the extremely tall Korin Tower and train under the legendary Korin. It took Master Roshi 3 years to catch Korin and obtain the Sacred Water, which was rumored to tremendously increase one's strength and speed.

Master Roshi as a teenager

Before King Piccolo's rampage on Earth, Master Roshi and Shen were rivals, but later on the two became friends. Together they aided their master Mutaito in his battle with King Piccolo. The three of them were no match for King Piccolo, but Mutaito used a special technique - the Evil Containment Wave - to seal him away, dying in the process. Roshi and Shen threw the electric rice cooker he was sealed in to the bottom of the ocean so that King Piccolo would never be released.

Roshi&Shen

Roshi and Shen during King Piccolo's rampage

In the anime version of events, which includes some filler and altered events, the two fought side by side against King Piccolo's demons. When the two students and Mutaito lost the battle, Mutaito said to both of them that he would return someday with a way to defeat King Piccolo. After Mutaito left, Shen lost his faith in his master and reverted to his evil way of thinking, using the logic that good was not enough to defeat King Piccolo and left. Roshi, meanwhile, fled to the mountains while many more innocent people were being killed. Several years later, Mutaito returned to Roshi; by then, with a good portion of Earth's population was gone. In the second battle with King Piccolo, Master Roshi painfully witnessed his master die when Mutaito used the Evil Containment Wave technique on King Piccolo to seal him in an Electric Rice Cooker. Afterwards, Roshi dropped the Electric Rice Cooker into the deepest depths of the ocean. He would go on to establish the Turtle School based on Mutaito's teachings.

After fifty years, Master Roshi mastered a unique attack of his own invention, called the Kamehameha. He was also Gohan's and Ox-King's martial arts instructor.

When Roshi destroys the fire, he realizes that he accidentally put too much power into his Kamehameha and destroys Ox-King's entire castle. When he is finished putting out the flames he sees Goku deciding to try the Kamehameha on a car and destroys it. Being surprised that he can manage to do an attack that took him decades to master, Roshi decides to take Goku in as his student, after Goku is finished with his quest gathering the Dragon Balls.

When Goku returns to Roshi's house to start his training, Roshi has Goku find him a female companion. After Goku fails to find him an attractive woman, a former Orin Temple student named Krillin comes and requests to train under Roshi as well. After being bribed with Dirty Magazines, Roshi decides to allow him to train under him with Goku if they can bring him a beautiful girl. They eventually bring back a girl named Launch. Roshi packs up his house in a capsule and moves the ladder over to his special Training Island. He makes Goku and Krillin wear Turtle Shells as he puts them through tough and "unique" physical training, which begins at 4:30 A.M. and includes early morning milk delivery, tilling land bare handed, construction work and even studying.

"That was a close one, Goku, and I must admit my victory was only due to our sizes. My legs are longer, so I could hit much deeper on that last flying kick. Sort of a cheap trick, but it was my only chance, and it was for your own good; maybe you'll thank me someday, when you're older."

Roshi catches Krillin's attack

After eight months have passed, Roshi brings them to Papaya Island to participate in the annual 21st World Martial Arts Tournament and test out their strength and skill. Master Roshi enters the tournament himself in disguise as "Jackie Chun" (a parody of Jackie Chan) in order to make sure that his students will not win; he does this so that they will still feel challenged and will not become overconfident. Roshi easily wins the elimination rounds and is matched against Yamcha (one of Goku's friends from his quest finding the Dragon Balls) and defeats him with ease. Next, Roshi is matched with Krillin in the semi-final. Krillin distracts him by throwing panties into the arena, but Roshi still wins. When Goku beats Nam in his semi-final match, Roshi reads Nam's mind and helps him out by giving him a storage capsule to fill with free water for his village. In exchange, Roshi has Nam pose as Master Roshi in the crowd to convince Yamcha that Jackie Chun and Master Roshi are not the same person.

Roshi struggles barely beating Goku in the Tournament

Roshi fights Goku in the final match. When Goku looks at the full moon, he turns into a Great Ape, and Roshi is forced to destroy the moon with a Kamehameha to restore Goku back to his original form. When the fight restarts, Roshi and Goku charge at each other, both kicking each other in the face, but ultimately, Roshi just barely wins, as he has slightly more energy than Goku, and his legs are longer than Goku's, so his kick did more damage. Once the tournament is over, Roshi teaches Goku that there is always someone better out there and that he should never think of himself as the best. Having said this, Roshi decides that Goku should go out into the world and begin a journey of his own.

When Launch returns from getting groceries, Roshi decides to use the Micro Band to his advantage and draws her into a bath so he can spy on her but Launch transforms into her hostile state threatening to shoot him if he does not do what she says. Captain Dark of the Red Ribbon Army has his troops come to his island to retrieve the Dragon Balls that Goku left behind and to make him build a radar for the Red Ribbon Army thinking that he is a scientist that gave him the radar. Roshi easily defeats the troops and Captain Dark, although he lets one soldier leave alive. When Goku, Bulma and Krillin return, they gave Roshi an expensive diamond they found in the cave when retrieving their third Dragon Ball, as compensation for destroying his sub. Launch who is still in her bad form takes the diamond and leaves while General Blue of the Red Ribbon Army uses his psychic powers to tie up everybody while he takes the Dragon Balls and leaves a bomb to blow everybody up. They are saved when Launch returns in her good form and frees Goku to get rid of the bomb.

Roshi has Bulma contact Yamcha and bring an airplane so they can catch up with Goku and help him in his risky fight. When they make it to the base, Goku has already defeated the Red Ribbon Army shocking Roshi even more on how powerful Goku has become. He even says that Goku could be even stronger than him.

Jackie Chun makes it past the preliminaries and in the quarter finals is put up against Man-Wolf, who is holding a grudge against him. Man-Wolf wants revenge on Roshi due to Roshi destroying the moon in the last tournament, causing Man Wolf to stay stuck in his wolf form. Roshi easily beats him in the arena, and also takes advantage of Man-Wolf's dog like behavior, by making Man-Wolf run out of the ring in order to retrieve a bone, thus losing the match. Roshi is able to cure Man-Wolf's problem by using Krillin's head as a substitute moon.

However, Roshi eventually forfeits the battle (much to Tien's surprise) since Tien found out that he is really Roshi in disguise and because he had faith in Tien's abilities, so he decides that he would be a better match for his students than himself, thus retiring himself as Jackie Chun. While Tien is conflicting with the commands Master Shen gives him in the final match against Goku, Roshi convinces Tien that Master Shen's ways are not right. During Goku's match against Tien, Roshi saves Chiaotzu from Shen, who tries to kill Chiaotzu for disobeying him when Shen orders Chiaotzu to paralyze Goku and Tien so he can kill them for Tien's earlier betrayal. When King Piccolo finds them, Roshi knocks out Tien, to make sure in case Roshi fails, Tien is there to help. Roshi attempts to use the Evil Containment Wave on King Piccolo, but misses the Electric Rice Cooker by an inch and the technique drains his life force. It is worth noting that Roshi never used his MAX Power form in the fight against King Piccolo. Whether this was because of its increased stamina usage, him not believing it would work, or for other reasons is unknown. Roshi with his dying breath tells King Piccolo that he will eventually fail and be brought down. After Roshi finishes his speech, he falls to the ground, dying from his lack of energy. Knowing it is a tournament that isn't purely about power but team work and strategy as well, Gohan recommends Master Roshi as a member of Team Universe 7, saying his massive experience and enormous bag of tricky attacks will be extremely useful. Goku agrees saying Master Roshi can easily hold his own with his special moves alone. Roshi shows up to Yamcha's home as the latter is watching TV. Yamcha thinks Roshi is inviting him to join the team, but Roshi is only here to get Puar to transform into a young woman. Roshi claims that he is doing this because he wants to overcome his perversion before the tournament starts, but Yamcha isn't so sure it will work.

After Goku returns with Frieza, Master Roshi and the others are transported by Whis to the Null Realm. While at the Tournament of Power, Krillin asked him would he be okay when seeing the two females Caulifla and Kale, the turtle hermit assured him and Tien Shinhan that he will be fine. The Battle Royal starts and Master Roshi chooses to stay alongside Gohan, Piccolo, Krillin, and Tien Shinhan, he and the others are cornered by Lavender, Botamo, Comfrey, Shosa and Dercori; the team launched their assault (with Master Roshi firing the Kamehameha), which did little to no damage. Later after Krillin damages Zium's wing with his Destructo Disc, Roshi blasts Zium out of the arena with his version of the Kamehameha. After Kale's rampage, Master Roshi runs into Za Priccio, whom he traps with his Thunder Shock Surprise, and Tien knocks him out with the Neo Tri-Beam. He regroups with the other members of Team Universe 7. Seeing the situation of the tournament, Gohan, Piccolo, Tien and Master Roshi decide to fight separately, dodging a Ki Blast from Kunshi.

Roshi-DBS105

Master Roshi powering up

After completely scoping out everything since the tournament begin, Master Roshi ventures off on his own, while analyzing the status of the remaining fighters; he is soon confronted by three of the Universe 4 fighters; the first was Caway (whom was trying to seduce him), but her efforts backfired as he chased her off the stage; the second was Dercori (whom used her talismans to trap him in an illusion), Master Roshi successfully sealed her inside a jar with the Evil Containment Wave and tossed it off-stage (with both Omni-Kings allowing the jar, saying it was neat); the third and final opponent was Ganos, who transformed in order to fight Roshi. Initially Master Roshi was overwhelming him, but was overpowered when the latter increased in power. Left with no other option, Master Roshi uses up all of his energy to knock Ganos out of the arena with a Life Force MAX Power Kamehameha while at the same time, reminiscing the things he had learned from Goku and Krillin, as well as their time spent together. He almost died until Goku revived him with some of his energy, afterwards the two head off together.

Frost Roshi

Frost sneaks behind Master Roshi

Master Roshi sits down on a rock, Goku asks him if he will be fine. Roshi tells him that he will be fine with some rest. Roshi then tells Goku to go on and fight for him. Goku then departs. Roshi is next seen resting and hiding in a rock circle recovering and laminating how recovering was easier when he was younger. He is then attacked by Frost and is battered around thanks to being tired and their power gap. Roshi calls out Frost on going after weakened and tired fighters and Frost begins to torture his newly injured left shoulder. Frost mentions its not fun if they can't fight back and goes to eliminate Roshi but Roshi unleashes his Full Power and manages to push Frost back for a few moments but is overpowered. Frost says that it's hard for him to fight here as he has to be careful not to kill him by accident and blasts him with several Chaos Shots.

Master Roshi uses the Evil Containment Wave on Frost

Roshi, having been blasted back to his base form, uses the Evil Containment Wave again and almost manages to seal Frost; still, his injured shoulder prevents him from aiming properly. Frost, horrified at Roshi for having such a useful attack, forgets the rules and tries to kill Roshi, but Vegeta steps in and saves him, mentioning that he isn't saving him, it's just Frost pisses him off. Roshi sits back and lets Vegeta handle Frost and the now present Augo Magetta. When Frost mentions that he can't beat him in a normal convention, Roshi goes for the Evil Containment Wave again, trying to seal both Frost and Magetta; however, Frost uses a reflection to gain control. Vegeta rushes in to save Roshi once again, but Beerus sees through the trap and tells Vegeta to move, but it is too late and Vegeta is hit by and sealed away. Roshi, refusing to let Vegeta get eliminated thanks to him, charges and is easily blown back by Frost and shot with more Chaos Shots.

Last Stand1

Master Roshi's last stand

In a last ditch effort, Roshi fires a very small ki blast at the jar and seems to miss. Frost mocks Roshi's attempt, but Roshi shows he actually can use the attack like the Spirit Ball and redirects it back to blast the jar open, freeing an enraged Vegeta, who comes out as a Super Saiyan Blue and blasts the custom rock made hearing protectors off of Magetta and calls him a bastard, which makes him curl up into a ball. Frost retreats as Vegeta casually rolls Magetta off the stage. Roshi apologizes to Vegeta, to which he doesn't answer and instead asks Roshi to retire and eliminate himself before he dies from exhaustion. Roshi, realizing that Vegeta is right, agrees with him reluctantly. Vegeta then promises Roshi that he will take care of everything else as he has done enough. Roshi, leaving the rest of the fight to Vegeta, allows himself to pass out and fall out of the ring. Tien and Krillin catch Roshi and give him a Senzu Bean, reviving him. Beerus, while initially appearing to be angry, reveals that he is only joking and says the three did very well given the situation and, in a rare show of respect from the God of Destruction, Beerus calls Roshi "Master".

While Krillin is trying to warn Roshi about Yunba's deceptive speed, Roshi spots three young attractive female convicts who head off elsewhere. Rather than stay and fight with Krillin, Roshi excitedly leaves him to give chase to the trio instead.

Roshi vs Female convicts

Roshi faces three convicts

Roshi is initially overpowered by the three and when Krillin joins his side, he tells him that the girls he chased after are more than he bargained for, as they will not let him grope them, before correcting himself and saying that his attacks won't hit. Miza, Iwaza and Kikaza, appear and vow to give him payback. Krillin notes that they have powerful energy, but if Roshi were to use the same power that he showed against Jiren in the Tournament of Power, then he should not have any trouble. However, Roshi says that he is unable to perform that without a clear mind and that, right now, his mind must be possessed by wicked energy, to which Krillin comically deduces as to why that is.

Roshi vs Female convicts 2

Roshi blindfolds himself

Roshi covers his eyes, which allows him to successfully dodge and evade all three convicts' attacks. Roshi suggests that the girls give up their evil ways and return to the Galactic Prison. Angered, the three girls fuse together to become one significantly large, unattractive female and lands a single blow on Krillin and Roshi that sends them both flying. They try to hide from the fused female convict but Krillin, despite knowing that he doesn't stand a chance, decides that he'd rather go out swinging. As the overweight convict prepares to kill both Krillin and Roshi, she is suddenly knocked out with a single punch by Goku, who had teleported to Earth after sensing Krillin's energy spiking.

Master Roshi attends a picnic along with the other Z Fighters and their family members (barring Goku and Chi-Chi, who were at a parent teacher interview session for a school Chi-Chi planned to send Gohan to). He ended up becoming severely drunk, and thus was doing various fool tricks such as balancing a stick with dishes on them with his teeth (in the dub, this was altered to state that he was going berserk because someone hid all of his girlie magazines). He was also the only one besides Mrs. Brief who actually enjoyed Krillin's painful karaoke session. After Paragus arrives on Earth to get Vegeta to rule the reborn Saiyan Empire as well as eliminate a Legendary Super Saiyan that has destroyed most of the South Area, Master Roshi tries to stop Vegeta, but in the end only got him, Gohan, and Oolong to come along. After the flight over to New Planet Vegeta, he started experiencing a hangover (which was also amplified later on by Oolong smashing his head with a mallet in order to give him "medicine", although the Dub implied that his hangover was due to overstuffing on Tuna Sandwiches). He also ate a feast prepared by Paragus for Goku, along with Goku and Oolong. He eventually attempts to demand that Paragus either let him and his friends leave New Planet Vegeta, or at the very least install a video and magazine store to liven up the place while Paragus was busy trying to regain control over Broly, despite Oolong's warning that Paragus is most likely not going to let him.

Master Roshi later tries to help Goku and the other Saiyans fight Broly by transforming into his maximum power form and attempts to use the MAX Power Kamehameha (made more explicit in the Japanese dub where he says "Kamehame..."), but because traces of his drunkenness were still present, he ends up making a fool of himself by changing his facial expressions while using his fool's mask as a "curtain" before powering down and Oolong is forced to kick him away (in a manner similar to stand up shows), thus making him unable to fight, and ends up reluctantly having to leave the planet without Goku and the other Saiyans upon Goku's request. While facing Broly, Roshi calls him "Broccoli", revealing Broly's name is a pun on the word "broccoli". After Paragus' spaceship was destroyed, he realizes he left his lunch on Paragus' spaceship. Manga and Anime

Master Roshi is among one of the strongest humans in history, and the strongest fighter of his generation. A legendary champion of the World Martial Arts Tournament, simply knowing that students of his were competing in the said tournament left all spectators in awe. Despite his advanced age reducing his natural stamina and endurance while also reducing his peak performance, he makes up for it with super efficiency both physically and mentally, able to easily read his opponent's movements and battle tactics, allowing him to move with minimal needed effort. His experience and intuition have honed his natural instincts to become fully aware of his surroundings to the point practically being able to move against threats automatically. A grandmaster of all martial arts and hand-to-hand combat styles, along with their respective techniques and skills, Roshi is an outstandingly versatile fighter and tactician, able to quickly see through an opponent's skills and effortlessly change his own methods to best suit the situation. At the same time, he is deceptively strong for his frail-form, able to move at blazing speeds and move massive structures with his bare hands, all while at base power. During his battle with Goku at the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament he still managed to barely beat his student even after having used up almost all of his energy to destroy the moon. In the 22nd tournament, after getting serious and bulking up somewhat he was a match for Tien Shinhan. Once he outputs his absolute maximum might, he was capable of destroying the moon and it was believed by the likes of Yamcha and Krillin that he could kill Great Ape Goku with one Kamehameha. Roshi notes that his perverted ways had held him back all these years, and that putting the energy he once used for them towards combat had greatly increased his power and skill. In the anime, he also stated that Goku and Krillin's battles had taught him to go beyond his limit.

However, over the course of the Dragon Ball series, his power became outclassed by the newer generation of fighters. His power also pales in comparison to King Piccolo and his offspring and he ends up dying after failing to seal King Piccolo with the Evil Containment Wave. At the beginning of Dragon Ball Z, he is quickly overshadowed by the Dragon Team, Saiyans, and villains that follow and is relegated to the role of a wise, yet perverted old martial arts master. He would instead regularly advise his allies with sagely wisdom or occasionally aid them in their training as he aided Krillin in his three-year preparation for the androids and later taught Goku the Evil Containment Wave.

Despite his apparent retirement from active fighting and acknowledging his days as the strongest are long over, he still continues to train alone. In Dragon Ball Super, Master Roshi uses his full power form to combat 170 of Frieza's soldiers with only minor difficulty. Master Roshi is, however, not able to keep up with Frieza's special elite warriors like Shisami and Tagoma. Later in in the Universe Survival Saga, Master Roshi is chosen to fight in the Tournament of Power by Gohan, believing that his vast experience and gigantic bag of tricky attacks will be very useful during the tournament, which Goku agreed to. When Yurin controls Roshi with a magic talisman, Roshi in his Max Power state with no restrains was shown to easily overpower Tien Shinhan, whom had used the Four Witches Technique. He was also able to briefly hold his own against Goku's base form but is easily defeated by Goku's Kamehameha after he put up no defense because he received no commands from Yurin. Goku states that Roshi had been hiding his true power from everyone and is surprised that this is what Master Roshi can do when he isn't holding back.

During the Tournament of Power, in the anime, his MAX Power Kamehameha was powerful enough to knock Dium out of the arena. His Thunder Shock Surprise was strong enough to hold Za Priccio still and he was fast enough to easily dodge Kunshi's Ki Blast. During the fight with Team Universe 4, he showed his resourcefulness by facing off against three opponents consecutively. Against Caway, he easily repelled her energy weapons and ultimately terrified her into forfeiting (albeit it was mostly from his perverted advances). His knowledge in magical matters allowed him to easily defeat Dercori with the Evil Containment Wave, to which he was not affected by its consequences, showing his increase in power. Against Ganos, his tactical prowess enabled him to effortlessly dodge and deflect all of the younger enemy's initial attacks (despite the fact that Ganos was faster and stronger than him - with Ganos even noting that if he could just land one blow Roshi would be defeated) until he grew strong enough to overwhelm Roshi and bash him around. Despite this, he showed noticeable resilience, repeatedly getting back up. Once using his max power and then proceeding to go beyond his limits, he was able to defeat the injured Ganos and blast him out the ring with a Life Force MAX Power Kamehameha. Roshi's performance earned him repeated praise from Beerus, the God of Destruction of Universe 7. While Master Roshi is no match for Final Form Frost though mostly using most of his stamina from his previous battles and dropping his guard from the sneak attack of Frost, he was still able to briefly knock him back when he went into his Max Power state and caught him by surprise. Master Roshi was able to survive using the Evil Containment Wave twice in a row, however he was heavily exhausted. Overall, because of the exhaustion from using the Evil Containment Wave and being tortured by Frost, Master Roshi had to eliminate himself as he was unable to fight anymore, as he would have only stood in the way of his teammates.

In the manga, despite being noted to have much weaker raw power than any other fighter, he still became one of the final fighters participating. He believed he would be able to hold out against Frost on his own, presumably using his Ultra Instinct-like ability, using this ability he was able to decisively outmaneuver and eliminate Kahseral, the general of the Pride Troopers. Afterwards, despite seeing the beyond-Destroyer might of Jiren calmly overwhelm both Perfected Super Saiyan Blue Goku and the greatly improved Hit, Roshi openly voiced his disappointment in Goku's general performance. To which, he decided to teach Goku again through action, single-handedly facing the titanic Pride Trooper to show the true essence of martial arts.

Pointing out Goku foolish over-reliance on raw power, Roshi demonstrated true efficiency by using his vast experience and seamless skill against Jiren. Through this, despite the incalculable difference in raw power, Roshi adapted to the flow of the battle to effortlessly anticipate and evade all of Jiren's attacks. Roshi's performance left his foe and all spectators in awe. Even more, the seemingly automatic nature behind it made Beerus believe Roshi was using Ultra Instinct. Whis noted that it was only similar, but nonetheless complimented Roshi's understanding of free moving, noting that it made Roshi currently the closet person to mastering Ultra Instinct, even if not aware of it. Ultimately, Jiren managed to strike Roshi, which alone was enough to eliminate him. Despite this, Roshi's words and actions resonated with Goku, letting Goku get past his subconscious doubt and careless mentality to unlock Ultra Instinct Sign.

Films

In Dragon Ball Z: The World's Strongest, it is revealed that 50 years ago, Master Roshi was considered the Earth's strongest fighter according to Dr. Wheelo and Dr. Kochin who believed he was still the Earth's strongest fighter and thus a candidate to transfer Wheelo's mind into. However Dr. Wheelo eventually chooses to target Goku, upon learning Master Roshi was no longer the world's strongest fighter. The film marks one of the few times Roshi fights seriously and shows a glimpse of Roshi's hidden power, defeating four bio-men without exerting much effort. Against Dr. Kochin's three strongest bio-men, Roshi was able to fend off their unified assault with little effort. It was only from being surprised by Misokatsun's super elastic body bouncing Roshi's Kamehameha back at him that the trio was able to catch Roshi off guard and defeat him.

In Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’, Master Roshi is able to keep up with 170 of Frieza's soldiers. However these soldiers were largely unimpressive to Frieza, viewing them as pitiful compared to his previous soldiers.

Statements by authors and guidebooks

Master Roshi's power level is 139 while not fighting,[2] and 180 when getting serious.[9] The movie pamphlet for Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might states that Master Roshi's power level is 350.

It was stated by Akira Toriyama in Dragon Ball Volume F in relation to Roshi defeating numerous Frieza Soldiers that Master Roshi is “only that strong if he feels like it”.

During the Tournament of Power, Master Roshi was much weaker than both Goten or Trunks in their Super Saiyan states.[10]

Abilities

Techniques

  • Flight – The Ability to fly through the use of ki. Though Roshi cannot fly in the manga, he is capable of flight in some video games, he was also able to fly in the anime while he was a Jiang Shi.
  • Hikou – The ability to fly without the use of ki through the use of wings or special mechanisms. In Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2, Master Roshi is capable of flight by twirling his staff at high speeds like a helicopter, or by running at high speeds while in the air. In Dokkan Battle, he uses a jetpack to fly like most characters that can't use ki based flight.

Roshi's small ki blast to save Vegeta from Frost's Evil Containment Wave

  • Ki Blast – The most basic form of energy wave.
  • Ki Sense – The ability to sense the energy of other beings.
  • Kamehameha – A powerful Ki blast fired with two hands after concentrating a large amount of Ki.
    • The Original Kamehameha – The technique involves wide sweeping arm movements and cupping the hands together before bringing them forward to fire a blue wave of energy.
    • MAX Power Kamehameha – While the fundamentals of the technique are exactly the same as a regular Kamehameha, the overall power of this Kamehameha is even greater due to Master Roshi being in his MAX Power form.
    • Master-Student Kamehameha – A triple Kamehameha performed by Goku, Krillin, and Master Roshi in Dragon Ball Z: The World's Strongest.
    • One-Handed Kamehameha - A variation of the Kamehameha that is performed with one hand.
    • God Kamehameha - A powerful version of the Kamehameha used by Master Roshi in Dragon Ball Heroes as of GDM7, when he is preparing the attack, he will unleash his Max Power form.
  • Afterimage Technique – An ability to move so swiftly that an image of the user is left behind. He also uses it in the Butōden series.
  • Kiai – A technique where the user affects the air currents around him with ki to produce powerful shockwaves in order to strike the opponent at mid range. Also called Sawayaka Na Kaze.[2] He uses the technique in Dragon Ball: Origins.
  • Hypnosis Technique – A technique that can hypnotize and control the mind of the opponent.
    • Sleepy Boy Technique – A hypnosis move used to put the opponent to sleep, by using hand motions and weird voice sounds.
  • Telepathy – A way to communicate with others using one's mind.
  • Thunder Shock Surprise – The user shoots a lightning blast towards the target using both hands, and traps the opponent within an electric field.
  • Evil Containment Wave – A technique designed to seal demons away by sucking them into a container with a special "Demon Seal" ofuda on it. The move requires huge stamina and endurance to perform, if user does not have enough life force they will die soon after performing it, despite the success of the technique.
  • Principles of Ultra Instinct - Thanks to his many years of martial arts experience Master Roshi became capable of utilizing a similar but not quite as advanced automatic dodging technique by the time of the Tournament of Power - causing Beerus to believe he was actually using Ultra Instinct itself.[12]
  • 3D Scan Mode – A mode that allows for advanced scanning of enemies. Roshi uses this in Dragon Ball Z: Bojack Unbound when he finds some ladies sitting at a table.
  • Special Beam Cannon – The move is performed by touching the index and middle fingers of one hand to the forehead and charging enough ki to attack. Its speed changes to the power level of the user performing the move. When ready, the fingers are extended forward, and two thin energy beams are unleashed from the fingers. One remains straight while the other coils around the straight beam. The resulting beam is quite powerful, drilling through most targets, and exploding on the ones it can't. Master Roshi was shown to use this technique in Dragon Ball Z: Atsumare! Gokū Wārudo.
  • High Speed Rush – Master Roshi's Blast 2 rush attack in the Budokai Tenkaichi series.
  • Turtle School Ultimate Fist – Master Roshi's Blast 2 rush attack in his Max Power form in the Budokai Tenkaichi series.
  • False Courage – One of Master Roshi's Blast 1 in the Budokai Tenkaichi series.
  • Pump Up – One of Master Roshi's Blast 1 in his Max Power form in the Budokai Tenkaichi series.
  • Rock, Scissors 'N' Paper – In the original version, the user shouts "Jan Ken", then a name corresponding to the attack: "Gu", equals rock and will be a strong punch. "Chyoki", equals scissors and will be a poke in the eyes. "Pa", equals paper and will be an open palm strike. Master Roshi taught Gohan this technique, but its unknown whether he is the inventor of the technique.[13]
  • Drunken Fist – A fighting style that imitate the movements of a drunk person.
    • Drunken Turtle Punch – A cane smack performed while acting drunk. Used in the Butōden series.
    • Drunken Turtle Kick – A kick performed while acting drunk. Used in the Butōden series.
  • Cobra Twist – Roshi never showed this technique. However, during the climax of his fight against Goku in the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament he considered using it, but desisted because such move would not work on an opponent with short limbs like Goku at that time, so it can be assumed it is some sort of throw or holding move.
  • Elephant Punch – A punch performed with the back of an opened hand. Used in the Butōden series.
  • Pressure Point Attack – A technique which, by touching or hitting weakly certain pressure points on an opponent's body, can incite effects such as paralysis or knock the opponent out. Enough prolonged pressure on the pressure points can also kill the opponent.
  • Two-Level Knee Hit – A jumping knee strike followed by a kick. Used in the Butōden series.
  • Farting Expelling gas from the rear end potent enough to stun opponents. Used against a dinosaur during the Majin Buu conflict.
  • Witchcraft - A team attack where Yurin turns Roshi into a Jiang Shi after she counters his unwanted advances and commands him to fire a MAX Power Kamehameha.
  • Shock Tornado - Used against Miza.

Transformations

Base
MasterRoshiBF

Master Roshi's base form

In his normal state, he seems old and fragile usually walking with a cane, not doing much battle, but he is able to perform incredible superhuman acts that most ordinary people cannot accomplish, such as his ability to effortlessly catch bullets from a machine gun with his bare hands at close range.

In the Vegeta Saga, he is seen having a power level of 139, compared to the average human's power level of 5.

Roshi ready to fight

Master Roshi (as Jackie Chun) fighting seriously

Upon getting serious, Roshi is much more muscular than at his normal level of power, but the muscles are not as large as that of his max power. Roshi is first shown buffed up and uses this while exercising in the episode "Korin Tower", and later again when Roshi fought Tien in this form at the 22nd World Tournament, noticing that it would take more strength to beat him. His power level is 180 when in this state.

Max Power

Master Roshi can also increase his energy and achieve his final stage. In this state, his appearance changes dramatically, with an enormous increase in muscle mass and likewise height (nearly equal in height to Piccolo). In this state, he can perform many ki attacks at their maximum potential (most noticeably the enhanced MAX Power Kamehameha).

Roshi uses this state when he puts out the fires on Fire Mountain, when he destroys the Moon as Jackie Chun, and when he transforms to fight Broly but backed down at the last minute (mostly because he was too drunk to even focus) and during Resurrection ‘F’ when fighting dozens of Frieza's soldiers.

The full power of this stage is unknown, but he was able to destroy the moon with a "Maximum Power" Kamehameha and it was believed by Krillin and Yamcha that he could kill Great Ape Goku with the attack. Roshi rarely uses this form because of the decrease in stamina. This form is called Super Serious Turtle Hermit (亀仙人の超本気 Kamesen'nin no Chō Honki) in Dragon Ball Heroes.

Master Roshi under Yurin's witchcraft spell

When Roshi falls under the spell of Yurin's witchcraft, he took on the Master Roshi Possessed[14] form, he no longer held back his power. At maximum power he was able to quite easily overpower and would have killed Tien had Goku not saved him and briefly held his own against Goku's base form but was in the end quite easily beaten by Goku's Kamehameha after he put up no defense because he received no commands from Yurin. Goku said that Roshi has been doing a lot of training in secret and is quite shocked at what he is capable of when he is actually serious and not holding back.

Equipment

  • Turtle Shell - The shell of a turtle.
  • Flying Nimbus - A magical, yellow cloud that serves as a way of transportation. Roshi was able to ride it in his youth though his heart eventually became impure due to Roshi's perversion and was given to Goku for helping Turtle, though it was later destroyed by Tambourine.
  • Bansho Fan - A mystical fan designed to stoke and control the flames of the magical furnace.
  • Electric Rice Cooker - Machines used to cook rice though Roshi uses it as the container for the Evil Containment Wave like his mentor Master Mutaito.
  • Senzu Bean - Mystical beans with immense rejuvenation properties.

Trivia

  • His title appears in the original manga as Muten Roshi (武天老師) in on'yomi, or Wǔtiān Lǎoshī in pinyin, which means "Old Heavenly Martial Arts Master". His name in English adaptations is a phonetic adaptation of that title: Master Roshi. The Japanese word roshi (老師) correlates to the Chinese word for "teacher" (lǎoshī) and Muten (武天) is made up of the characters for military/martial and heaven. It is humorous to note that the English adaptation would translate it to "Master Old Teacher", or simply "Master Master". Most frequently, he is also known as Turtle Hermit (Kamesennin). During the World Martial Arts Tournaments, he adopted the moniker Jackie Chun (ジャッキー・チュン), an obvious parody of the actor and martial arts master Jackie Chan, in order to remain anonymous so that he could demonstrate to his pupils that the world was a big place where there was always someone stronger.
    • Which is why "Master Muten" is used in the Italian dub.
      • The name "Master Muten" (or more translated, "Boski miszcz" (note: that "master" is "mistrz" in polish, "miszcz" may be a mockery of his title) is somehow used in the polish manga of Dragon Ball.
        • However, Muten has the same pinyin rendering as Goten (which is "Wutian").
  • His blood type is O.[6]
  • Like his rival, Master Shen, Master Roshi is not given a real name in the original Japanese version, as Kamesennin and Muten Rōshi are both merely titles meaning "Turtle Hermit" and "Old Heavenly Martial Arts Master", respectively.
    • Strangely, in chapter 13, he shows Chi-Chi his driver's license to prove that he is really Muten Roshi. It is possible Chi-Chi learned his real name from her father, and merely does not mention it.
SlumpKamiRoshi

God in Dr. Slump

  • Master Roshi is based on the God of the Galaxy in Dr. Slump.[15]
  • It is probable Roshi designed his Jackie Chun disguise to be a homage to Master Mutaito, as it has the same hairstyle Mutaito had.
  • Master Roshi's hobbies are reading, watching TV, internet (adult sites too of course), video games, and afternoon naps.[3]
  • Master Roshi's favorite food is home-delivered pizza.[3]
  • Master Roshi's favorite vehicle is an air wagon.[3]
  • Master Roshi was ranked at first place on Watchmojo's top male perverts.
  • Toriyama said Master Roshi will live the longest[1] and also said Roshi is mischievous.[1]
  • When there are no battles or on days off, Master Roshi watches videos.[16]
  • Master Roshi is currently the only playable character in Dragon Ball FighterZ who isn't also playable in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2.
