This is a list of various edits, significant dialogue changes, and scenes that have been removed in early releases of the Dragon Ball series. Most of them are often for covering up violence or sexual references. It should be noted that most of these edits were done by Funimation, although they were being demanded by outside companies that Funimation were working with early on (such as Saban Entertainment and BLT Productions).
Even since the 2000s, the middle fingers were edited into fists in Dragon Ball Z Kai and even the current releases of Blu-rays of Dragon Ball Z movies. Also, nudity is censored too, and as well as toning down most of the epileptic flash effects, and even the violence, too.
In the Dragon Ball Super anime, most of the blood was not shown.
Dragon Ball[]
Emperor Pilaf Saga[]
The Secret of the Dragon Balls[]
(Harmony Gold version originally aired in 1990)
(BLT version originally aired in 1995 on syndication)
(Edited FUNimation version originally aired in 2001 on Toonami)
(Blue Water version originally aired in 2004 on Toonami UK)
- In the Harmony Gold dub, the scene where Goku skinny-dips to catch a Giant Fish was removed entirely (as well as the scene of him urinating), and it immediately cuts to Goku dragging the fish home just before he meets Bulma.
- In the BLT dub, Goku is wearing underwear in the scene where he skinny-dips to catch a Giant Fish. Also, the part where he pees in the water, just before he starts fishing with his tail, was removed. In the Blue Water dub of this scene, Goku is wearing a thong. In the Funimation dub, however, this scene was left completely unedited (as were all other scenes involving Goku naked).
- The part where Goku lifts Bulma's skirt up to see if she has a tail is still present in the BLT dub, but her panties are oddly repainted pink to match her skirt. The part was absent from the Harmony Gold dub and Toonami's broadcast of the FUNimation dub.
- The part where Bulma shoots Goku with a gun was completely removed in the Harmony Gold dub, BLT dub, and Toonami's Broadcast of the FUNimation dub.
- The scene where Bulma lifts up her skirt and offers to let Goku touch her butt if he gives her the Dragon Ball was completely removed in the Harmony Gold dub, BLT dub, and the Toonami broadcast of the FUNimation dub.
The Emperor's Quest[]
(Harmony Gold version originally aired in 1990)
(BLT version originally aired in 1995 on syndication)
(Edited FUNimation version originally aired in 2001 on Toonami)
- When Goku is naked standing in front of Bulma at the beginning of Goku's bath scene, there is a stool digitally added to cover his private in the BLT dub. During his bath scene, the lower part of the screen was cropped to make it, so his crotch was not visible. In the FUNimation dub, this scene was left uncensored. The Harmony Gold dub removed this scene.
- The dialogue in Bulma's bubble bath scene was completely changed in all of the English dubs. In the Japanese version, Goku is talking to her about her breasts, but in the English versions, he is saying that he wants to scrub her back.
- The scene of Pilaf passing out due to the gas he (unknowingly) used against the Pilaf Gang is cut from the Toonami broadcast. In the Harmony Gold dub, the scene was cut, and the dialogue was altered so that Pilaf instead tortures Shu for not bringing him a Dragon Ball.
- In the Harmony Gold dub, BLT dub, and Toonami broadcast, the scene where Goku takes off Bulma's panties and discovers that girls don't have male private parts was completely removed. In the Harmony Gold dub, however, the dialogue was altered so that, instead of telling Bulma that her "balls are gone", he just tells her he's hungry.
The Nimbus Cloud of Roshi[]
(Harmony Gold version originally aired in 1990)
(BLT version originally aired in 1995 on syndication)
- In the Harmony Gold dub, the storyline of Bulma unknowingly missing her panties was written out entirely. Also, the scenes of Roshi asking to see her underwear was removed.
- In the BLT dub, the blood in the fight between Goku and the Bear Thief was removed.
- The scene of Bulma lifting her dress up for Master Roshi was removed from the Harmony Gold and BLT dubs. Instead, Roshi just gives her the Ball.
- When the episode aired on Toonami, Roshi asks to see Bulma's belly button instead of her underwear. The scene of her exposing herself was removed, but the later shot of her lifting her dress back up to get the ball was curiously left in.
- In the Harmony Gold dub, BLT dub, and Toonami broadcast, the scene where Bulma loads her machine gun and shoots at Goku for taking off her underwear was completely removed. The FUNimation dub kept this scene.
Oolong the Terrible[]
(Harmony Gold version originally aired in 1990)
(Blt version originally aired in 1995 on syndication)
(Blue Water version originally aired c. 2004 on Toonami UK)
- Goku touching Pocawatha's crotch was removed from the Harmony Gold, BLT, and Blue Water dubs, but him touching Grandma Paozu's is still present in the Blue Water dub, but the dialogue is changed to make it seem like Goku is dusting off the old lady's apron. In the Harmony Gold dub, the dialogue was changed so that, when Bulma hits Goku, it's because he told Pocawatha that she's prettier than Bulma.
- In the Harmony Gold dub, the scene of Goku peeing was removed.
Yamcha the Desert Bandit[]
(Harmony Gold version originally aired in 1990)
(BLT version originally aired in 1995 on syndication)
(Blue Water version originally aired c. 2004 on Toonami UK)
- Goku touching Oolong's crotch to check to see if he is male or female was cut from the BLT and Blue Water dub.
- The scene where Bulma lured Oolong as a fish with underwear was changed to dollar bills. However, the Blue Water and FUNimation dubs retained the scene.
- The scenes of Oolong's diarrhea in the bush and coming out with toilet paper were cut from the Harmony Gold and BLT dubs. In the Harmony Gold dub, the pill Bulma gives Oolong instead makes his ears sensitive to high sounds.
- The scene where Oolong turns into panties in front of an angry Bulma was removed from the BLT dub. However, the Blue Water and FUNimation dub versions retained the scene.
Keep an Eye on the Dragon Balls[]
(Edited BLT version originally aired in 1995 on syndication)
- In the BLT dub, the sequence of Bulma in the shower is shortened, and the risque shot of Yamcha seeing Bulma walking around naked is replaced with a tamer silhouette. In the FUNimation dub, this scene was left unedited.
- When a nude Bulma looks out the camper window, there is glare covering her breasts. There is a common misconception that this glare was added for the edited dub. The glare was originally there but was thickened to cover her entire cleavage.
- Bulma was digitally covered up in the early dub with the Dragon Balls in one scene, and just with more covers in another. This was also done to disguise the original plot of Oolong attempting to molest Bulma in her sleep.
The Ox-King on Fire Mountain[]
(Edited BLT version originally aired in 1995 on syndication)
- The scene in which Chi-Chi decapitates the dinosaur is edited and it shows the shadow instead.
- The moment when Yamcha hits Chi-Chi is edited in the BLT dub. Instead, it shows Puar's face with the sound effects of Yamcha knocking her out in the background. The FUNimation dub retained the scene.
- A paint error in the original version left Bulma's legs naked in one scene. When the episode was dubbed in English, FUNimation caught this and changed the color of her legs back to the blue of her pantyhose. While this could be seen as a correction rather than censorship, the eventual unedited English dub restores the original cels with Bulma's legs, incorrectly matching her skin tone.
- In the original uncut Japanese version, Chi-Chi pushes Goku off the Nimbus for patting her crotch. In the edited dub, it is because he criticizes her revealing outfit. The FUNimation dub retained the scene of Goku patting Chi Chi's crotch (in this dub, he pats people's crotches to confirm their gender).
The Kamehameha Wave[]
(Edited BLT version originally aired in 1995 on syndication)
(Edited FUNimation version originally aired in 2001 on Toonami)
- Master Roshi's desire to see Bulma's breasts is covered up with dialogue of him asking for something else in edited dubs.
- In the BLT dub, he wants Bulma to set him up on a date with a woman around his age.
- In the edited FUNimation dub shown on Cartoon Network, Master Roshi wants Bulma to walk on the beach with him.
- In the early English dub, the scene where Oolong is disguised as Bulma and exposing his breasts to Master Roshi resulting in giving him a nosebleed was completely removed.
The Penalty is Pinball[]
(Edited BLT version originally aired in 1995 on syndication)
- The scene where Bulma shows the middle finger to Emperor Pilaf while being captured was removed from the BLT dub. The Funimation dub retained the scene and had Bulma say, "My magic finger says it's in the ceiling!".
- A scene where Yamcha freaks out from Bulma exposing her cleavage while waking up Goku is removed from the BLT dub.
- The edited TV airing removed Oolong's private part, which was visible when he was in his bat form.
A Wish to the Eternal Dragon[]
(Edited BLT version originally aired in 1995 on syndication)
- Like the previous episode, the penis that is visible in Oolong's bat form was removed in the American TV airing.
- Oolong says that he wishes for the world's most comfortable underwear in all of the English dubs (including a flashback in an uncut episode of Dragon Ball Super), but in the Japanese version, he says that he wishes for some hot chick's panties.
- In the German dub, Oolong says that he wishes for "A hat with 2 holes for my ears".
- The panties Oolong wishes for have Shenron on them in the BLT dub.
The Legend of Goku[]
(Edited BLT version originally aired in 1995 on syndication)
- When Goku turns back into his normal form from a Great Ape, there is a crude digitally painted flower covering his private area as an edit in the BLT dub.
Tournament Saga[]
Goku's Rival[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2001 on Toonami)
- In the edited Toonami version of the FUNimation dub, the dirty magazines are altered so the women on them appear to wear clothes, and the word "dating" is added to the cover of the most prominent one.
- When Master Roshi takes Goku behind the house to inquire about the second girl he brought him, he asks (In the English translation) for him to invite her on a walk, much like his invitation to Bulma in the last saga. In the Japanese version, he instead tasks Goku to retrieve the girls' panties and bring them to him. In the English version, Goku returns to tell him that she will not walk with him and would rather they go for a swim together. In the Japanese version, he returns to tell him that she is not wearing panties and has nothing but a t-shirt on. Master Roshi then has some inner dialogue, in which he declares his plans to toggle her behind the cover of his sunglasses while pretending to make polite conversation.
Look Out For Launch[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2001 on Toonami)
- Master Roshi asks Launch for a walk around the island, but, in the Japanese version, he asks her to take a bath with him.
Milk Delivery[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2001 on Toonami)
- The scene of Master Roshi and Goku accidentally waking up Launch was shortened in the TV airing. The part where she's still in her panties, shoots, and gets knocked out by Goku and Roshi attempting to touch her breast after she gets knocked out was removed from the English TV airing.
The Turtle Hermit Way[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2001 on Toonami)
- Goku and Krillin's penises were not shown when they swim in the shark-infested waters naked during the English TV airing.
The Tournament Begins[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2001 on Toonami)
- The scene of Roshi touching the flight attendant's rear was taken out of the Toonami broadcast.
- In the Japanese version, as Master Roshi was greeting Bulma, he asked her to let him bury his face in her breasts, whereas in the English versions (both cut and uncut), he simply commented on the bunny outfit she wore the last time he saw her.
Elimination Round[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2001 on Toonami)
- All the panty shots you see of Bulma were taken out of the Toonami broadcast.
Smells Like Trouble[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2001 on Toonami)
- The speech the announcer makes about hitting in the private parts along with the part of Ranfan replying with "What about my parts?" was taken out of the Toonami broadcast.
- Krillin farting in Bacterian's face was edited in the Toonami broadcast to make it look like he was simply mooning him.
- Master Roshi buys Bulma some gifts, and then asks her to try them on for him to "show off her curves". In the original Japanese, he instead asks her for "pafu-pafu" (trans: puff-puff) which is a slang term for burying your face in between a woman's breasts.
Quarterfinals Continue[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2001 on Toonami)
- Ranfan's stripping was removed in the Toonami broadcasting. Instead, the scene of one of Nam's failed attacks is shown followed by her twitching foot to show she was knocked out. This is strangely not edited in the recaps in later episodes, which clearly shows her in her underwear.
Krillin's Frantic Attack[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2001 on Toonami)
- The scene of Goku dropping his pants in front of the crowd and shows his bare bottom to the stage to prove his tail is real was still present in the Toonami broadcast, but the shot showing his penis was removed.
- The scene of Krillin trying to distract Roshi by throwing a pair of panties was taken out of the Toonami broadcast.
- Jackie Chun (Chun Chan in the Japanese version) sings a song before his fight. In English, it's a narcissistic rapish thing. In Japanese, it has a childishly naughty line in it. Here are the lyrics:
- That cute kid over there is a girl
- She has boobies but she doesn't have a peepee
- I invite you to the village festival, we'll take my tractor
- When you dance with the drums, it becomes a Bon Festival Dance
The Grand Finals[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2001 on Toonami)
- Roshi's Drunken Fist attack was changed to Mad Cow Attack in the Toonami broadcast. The uncut dubbed version from the DVDs uses the more accurate name of "Drunken Boxing."
The Final Blow[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2001 on Toonami)
- Any shots that show Goku's penis when he was naked, as well as a shot that shows his balls from the rear, were removed from the Toonami broadcast.
- In the sub, the women in the crowd who are giggling at naked Goku mention explicitly that are amused by his penis, which allows Goku to infer that they're girls. In the dub, they are generally amused by Goku in the nude with no reference to genitals are made.
Red Ribbon Army Saga[]
The Roaming Lake[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2002 on Toonami)
- The scene of Master Roshi at the Underwear store was completely removed in the Toonami broadcast.
Danger in the Sky[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2002 on Toonami)
- The scene where Goku shows Hasky his testicles after misinterpreting her request to see his Dragon Balls is edited in the Toonami version by showing her his boxers with Dragon Balls on them that Bulma made him.
The Pirate Treasure[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2002 on Toonami)
- Bulma and Krillin's accusations of General Blue being homosexual were altered, such as referring to Blue as being "scared easily" for a big guy, a "prude" (both occurring when Blue first ignores Bulma's advances) as well as Bulma claiming that she was a "powerful sumo wrestler" after her second failed attempt at flirting with him (she claims she is a man in the original version). In addition, when Krillin in the anime only taunts Blue by daring him to deliver his best shot just before falling victim towards his Psychic Eyes ability, the dub removes Krillin baiting Blue by calling him a "flaming homo." Blue's response to their first accusations is also altered to have him say "You wouldn't find me so funny when you're dead" as well as specifically threaten Krillin with dying first, as in the Japanese version he takes offense at their deduction at his homosexual leanings.
- After the second attempt at seducing him failed, Bulma in the English dub simply remembers that trying to flirt with him won't actually work and tries to think of a different strategy without elaborating on why. In the Japanese version, she specifically states that the reason it didn't work was because of General Blue being gay as well as hating women as a result.
The Strange Visitor[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2002 on Toonami)
- The scene with General Blue and Obotchaman's encounter is changed in the dub to have Blue mistake Obotchaman for his long-lost brother Samuel due to the original scene passing for pedophilia (Blue having a crush on Obotchaman). The Castilian Spanish dub largely kept Blue's attraction to Obotchaman, although they changed Obotchaman's gender to female in order to remove hints at Blue's homosexuality and possible pedophilia.
Fortuneteller Baba Saga[]
We Are the Five Warriors[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2002 on Toonami)
- In the Toonami broadcast version, during Fangs' breakdown at the sight of Upa's cross, the words "Jesus Christ!" and "Oh, God!" were removed.
Deadly Battle[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2002 on Toonami)
- Originally to help Yamcha defeat the Invisible Man, Krillin brings over Master Roshi and Bulma from a picnic, he then yanks down Bulma's top exposing her breasts and causes Master Roshi to have a massive nosebleed that covers the Invisible Man in his blood. In the Blue Water dub and the Toonami edit of the Funimation dub, this was edited so that Master Roshi hands Krillin a can of tomato soup, using footage from a previous episode, and splashes the soup on the Invisible Man.
- In the Japanese version, when Fortuneteller Baba told Goku that it's impolite to ask about a woman's age, the latter replies, "So, you have a wiener, then?!". In both the edited and unedited versions of the English dub, Goku merely reiterates the question about Baba's age.
Tien Shinhan Saga[]
Rivals and Arrivals[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2002 on Toonami)
- In the Japanese version, during the Dragon Team's trip to Papaya Island, Launch says that she feels like hijacking an airplane whenever she's in one. In the English versions (edited and unedited), she instead rants about Jackie Chun defeating Goku in the previous tournament, shortly after the former was mentioned by Oolong.
- As a result of the above change, Roshi's request to the stewardess is changed from him having to use the bathroom to wanting to leave the plane in case of Launch finding out about his identity.
- Later on, his reference to being in the airport bathroom was downplayed in the English dub. When he returns from signing up as Jackie Chun, another bathroom related excuse was removed. It happens a fourth time when he comes back from talking with the restaurant manager.
Stepping Down[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2002 on Toonami)
- In the Japanese version and the manga, Jackie Chun asks if Tien's going to show him a dirty magazine, to which the latter angrily replies, "Why would I have such things?!" In the English versions (cut and uncut), the dialogue was changed so that Jackie Chun tells Tien that he's making a mistake by serving the Crane Hermit, and Tien instead barks back that he's correcting one.
King Piccolo Saga[]
Tambourine Attacks[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2003 on Toonami)
- In the uncut version, Tambourine tells King Chappa that he's come to kill him, while in the Toonami airing, the former says that he has come to "end" the latter instead. The same occurs with nearly all subsequent uses of the word "kill" throughout the entire saga.
Mark of the Demon[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2003 on Toonami)
- The scene where Bulma beats Master Roshi for looking at her underwear was cut from the TV airing.
- The scene with Man-Wolf's dead body floating along a river stream with a trail of blood behind it was cut from the Toonami broadcast.
Here Comes Yajirobe[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2003 on Toonami)
- The pages of the "family album" that Emperor Pilaf tries to show to King Piccolo are blanked out in the TV airing.
Terrible Tambourine[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2003 on Toonami)
- In the Japanese version, as Tambourine was shuffling through papers to determine his next target, he finds a picture of Bacterian, commenting that the latter was "weaker than shit". In both the edited and unedited English versions, Tambourine instead says that Bacterian was "hardly worth the effort".
Goku vs. King Piccolo[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2003 on Toonami)
- In the Japanese version, King Piccolo insulted Goku by saying that the latter "amounts to nothing more than ant shit", while in the English versions (cut and uncut), it was changed to "tiny and pathetic". Likewise, Goku's "slug shit" retort was changed accordingly.
- The blood shown when Goku bites Piccolo's hand is edited out.
Roshi's Gambit[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2003 on Toonami)
- The blood that Master Roshi wiped off his face after getting struck by Piccolo was painted over.
- In the Japanese version, Master Roshi told King Piccolo that the latter was getting in the way of the former being able to watch dirty videos in peace, whereas in both English versions (censored and uncensored), it was changed to "exercise programs".
A Taste of Destiny[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2003 on Toonami)
- The scene where King Piccolo chokes King Furry for speaking against him during the broadcast was removed from the TV airing.
- Launch's reply to King Piccolo's announcement, "Uh, I don't know, it doesn't sound that bad..." was cut out of the Toonami broadcast.
The Final Showdown[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2003 on Toonami)
- Although most of the scene with King Piccolo using Tien as a shield was left intact, the part where the former began squeezing the latter's head to keep Goku in place was cut.
- When Goku used the Penetrate! ability on Piccolo, nothing was shown other than a flash of white light. The following scenes which showed a large hole in Piccolo's stomach ended up getting removed entirely. Additionally, the blood on Piccolo's hands was painted over in the process. Strangely enough, the scene was left entirely unchanged during a flashback in an edited episode of Dragon Ball Z.
Piccolo Jr. Saga[]
Temple Above the Clouds[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2003 on Toonami)
- During the scene where Oolong poses as Goku and tries to get a kiss from the female reporter as well as her panties, the latter bit was cut out on both the edited and unedited versions of the English dub.
Changes[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2003 on Toonami)
- The conversation that Master Roshi and Oolong have in the Japanese version regarding the latter's collection of women's underwear is changed to them talking about Oolong's ear length in the English versions (both cut and uncut).
- Although the scene of Bulma elbowing Master Roshi is left intact, the TV airing never shows precisely why it was done. In the uncut version, Bulma elbows Master Roshi for touching her butt, while in the English version, it is seemingly done in response to him asking "Hey, remember me?"
Preliminary Peril[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2003 on Toonami)
- The scene where Master Roshi gets slapped by a random woman in the crowd for "accidentally" burying his face into her breasts was cut out of the Toonami airing.
Kami vs. Piccolo[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2003 on Toonami)
- Originally, when Master Roshi compared Hero's fighting strategy to his own, Launch asked him, "Eh? Ya mean ya ain't just an old pervert?", whereas, in the edited and unedited English versions, she instead tells him that Hero's "a buffoon by skill", while Roshi's is "all-natural".
Battle for the Future[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2003 Toonami)
- In the Japanese version, when Bulma wondered where Master Roshi was going, Launch jokingly said that the latter was probably "touchin' some girl's ass", much to Oolong's amusement. Bulma then replied that he was in no position to laugh. In the English version, Launch instead says that Roshi was "probably lookin' for a date", and when Oolong laughs at that comment, Bulma simply tells him to "put a sock in it", without pointing out his hypocrisy on the matter.
- Launch's "Kick his ass!" chant was changed to "Pummel 'im!" in both the edited and unedited English dub.
Goku Hangs On[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2003 on Toonami)
- The blood that oozes from Goku's right shoulder as a result of Piccolo blasting a hole through it is edited out. One of the following scenes, where the blood is shown dripping onto the ground, is cut.
The Victor[]
(Edited version originally aired in 2003 on Toonami)
- Originally, when Kami commented on how excellent a teacher Master Roshi was to Goku, the latter commented that the Turtle Hermit was "a little perverted". In the edited and unedited versions of the English dub, Goku merely said "No one's as wise or as goofy" as Roshi.
Dragon Ball Z[]
Raditz Saga[]
The Arrival of Raditz[]
(Edited version originally aired in 1996 on syndication)
- After the farmer gets killed with the bullet Raditz threw back at him, a voice clip of him saying "That smarts..." was added in.
- In the scene where Master Roshi is holding a mug of beer, the beverage has its color changed to blue (possibly to indicate water).
- The scene with Bulma bashing Master Roshi in the head for trying to touch her breasts was removed.
The World's Strongest Team[]
(Edited version originally aired in 1996 on syndication)
- Strangely, for unknown reasons, Gohan's tears were censored as he was being kidnapped by Raditz.
Gohan's Hidden Powers[]
(Edited version originally aired in 1996 on syndication)
- The blood that was dripping from Piccolo's shoulder after getting his arm blasted off was recolored green.
- The scene where Raditz backhands Gohan was cut. However, Gohan can still be seen rolling across the ground as if he had been knocked down.
Goku's Unusual Journey[]
(Edited version originally aired in 1996 on syndication)
- While Goku and Raditz are being blasted by the Special Beam Cannon, the blast is only seen going through the latter. Additionally, all of the blood was edited out.
- As Goku's dead body was phasing into "another dimension", the glob of blood he left behind in the grass was edited out.
Vegeta Saga[]
Gohan's Metamorphosis[]
(Edited version originally aired in 1996 on syndication)
- When Krillin was on his way to Chi-Chi's house to deliver the news about Goku's death, he claims that the latter was "trapped in another dimension". From this episode onward in the Saban dub, that term is frequently used to sugarcoat most death scenes.
- For unknown reasons, the thought bubble where Gohan is imagining an apple tree is edited out.
- In the original Ocean Group dub, Gohan's genitals aren't shown.
Princess Snake's Hospitality[]
(Edited version originally aired in 1996 on syndication)
- The scene where one of Princess Snake's attendants plays (and loses) Russian Roulette is cut from most major dubs, including the original Saban English dub.
A Black Day for Planet Earth[]
(Edited version originally aired in 1997 on syndication)
- Shortly after Nappa and Vegeta landed on East City, the latter says "Too bad it's Sunday. Those buildings would've been filled up tomorrow". For further emphasis, after leveling the city, Nappa goes on to claim that it was "evacuated".
The Battle Begins... Goku, Where Are You?[]
(Edited version originally aired in 1997 on syndication)
- There are two scenes in which Nappa destroys manned helicopters; the first, where an off-screen news crew member says "They blew up the cargo robot!" while in the next, Tien Shinhan exclaims "Look! I can see their parachutes! They're okay..."
The Saibamen Strike[]
(Edited version originally aired in 1997 on syndication)
- Various shots of Yamcha's corpse are painted over to show an empty crater.
- Master Roshi groping Bulma's rear is cut.
Nappa... the Invincible?[]
(Edited version originally aired in 1997 on syndication)
- When Nappa chopped Tien's arms off, the latter claims that he could grow his arm back, very likely to tone down the severity of such amputation.
Tien Goes All Out!![]
(Edited version originally aired in 1997 on syndication)
- When Nappa goes on a rampage to pass 3 hours' worth of waiting, various lines are inserted to cover-up the fact that Nappa killed all those people. For example, when Nappa murdered the filming crew, the crew supposedly fled the scene with Nappa claiming that the cowards "run away". Then when wiping out the navy, lines are inserted where the men successfully evacuate the ship with Nappa even declaring, “Hope you Navy boys like to swim!”. Finally, when he destroys a city, he claims that "these Earthlings are such cowards! A little target practice on some empty buildings and they scatter!" with the scenes of people burning being cut.
The Return of Goku[]
(Edited version originally aired in 1997 on syndication)
- When Piccolo dies, his body fades away. In the uncut version, his corpse remains on the battlefield.
Goku Strikes Back[]
(Edited version originally aired in 1997 on syndication)
- This episode marked the debut of "censorship stars", which were used to cover direct hits to the face in the Saban dub.
The Battle Ends[]
(Edited version originally aired in 1997 on syndication)
- Vegeta's foot is never actually seen connecting to Yajirobe's face; instead, the latter was immediately seen flying across the ground. The following scene where Vegeta beat Yajirobe while he was on the ground ended up getting removed entirely.
- After Gohan's tail was cut off by Vegeta and turns back into his normal form from a Great Ape, Gohan's naked buttocks were covered with a blue piece of Vegeta's clothing.
Namek Saga[]
A New Goal... Namek[]
(Edited version originally aired in 1997 on syndication)
- Yajirobe picking his nose was edited into him shaking his fists.
The Ruthless Frieza[]
(Edited version originally aired in 1997 on syndication)
- The scenes with the dead Namekian bodies had breathing and moaning sounds added to them for them to appear as if they were merely injured/knocked unconscious.
The Nameks Versus Frieza[]
(Edited version originally aired in 1997 on syndication)
- When Dodoria stabs his hand through one of the Namekian warriors, the hole was painted over to make it seem as if he simply punched him in the back.
- In addition to breathing noises being added to the dead body of the Namekian that Dodoria killed, the blood was edited out.
- The scene where Dodoria kills Cargo with an Energy Cannon was cut. Instead, some dialogue was added to make it seem as if Moori was the one that he was aiming for. Additionally, Dodoria, later on, claims that Cargo simply ran away.
- Dodoria killing Moori by snapping his neck was removed. Instead, sound effects were added as the camera cut to the Namekians' reactions, not showing exactly why Moori was seen falling to the ground shortly afterward.
- The scene where the nurse was getting angry at Master Roshi for touching her butt was removed.
Zarbon Transformed[]
(Edited version originally aired in 1997 on syndication)
- Before Zarbon transforms, he has some blood running down his lower lip and, on his hands, both of which were edited out.

The Eldest Namek[]

- In the Toonami airing, the scene of Gohan urinating on Krillin's head was removed.
- All instances of the word "hell" were removed from the Toonami airing.
- A shot of Goku's naked butt when he jumps out from the river is removed in the Toonami broadcast.
The Tree of Might (three-part television episode)[]
(Edited version originally aired in 1997 on syndication)
- Blood has been removed from all characters in the Saban TV dub.
- In the Saban TV dub, there is an infamous censorship edit to Gohan's face while it is being held by Turles, in which digital paint is used to cover Turles' fingers. However, this does not apply to the opening sequence where the fingers weren't digitally painted over when using footage from the movie.
- In the Saban TV dub, the scene where Gohan is falling nude after Goku cuts off his tail is edited using digital light to cover Gohan up, although a shot that was zoomed in to hide Gohan's penis still features it by mistake. The scene where Icarus wakes up a nude Gohan is edited using a digital bush, also covering Gohan.
- Various digitally painted "stars" are used to cover blows to the head in the Saban TV dub. A white fog-like substance was also added for the same reason.
- The violence in the fight between Goku and Turles is toned down in the Saban TV dub. For example, two kicks to Goku by Turles from when he uses Kaio-ken x10 are cut.
Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13![]
- Televised airings of the film have Android 13's dialogue altered slightly when first meeting Goku, due to his use of the word "ass" twice.
- Incidentally, the last bit of Trunks' sentence (when he referred to Android 13 as a "Red Ribbon Redneck") was cut towards the end of the sentence.
- Similarly, it also cuts out Super Android 13's exclamation of "Damn you!" when he fires a blast at Goku.
- Televised airings and the first DVD release censors Android 13's punch to Goku's groin with a digitally painted "star".
Dragon Ball Z: Broly - Second Coming[]
- The scene where Videl proudly declares herself as the "daughter of Mr. Satan" was changed to "the daughter of the great Hercule" in the Nicktoons version.
- Broly's beat-down of Trunks and Goten is heavily cut in televised airings. Shortly after Broly appears after firing a Planet Geyser at Goten and Trunks and attacks them, he proceeds to slam Goten and Trunks' faces into concrete hard enough to leave noticeable cracks twice. The slams were edited out.
- Trunks' distracting Broly by mooning him is heavily censored. Even in the uncut version, Trunks' taunt to Broly is toned down to him simply saying "Smile! Boo!" in a mocking manner (he originally told Broly to kiss his ass).
- Goten's relieving himself near the crystal balls before formally beginning his search for the remaining Dragon Ball after he lost it in the chaos caused by accidentally destroying a crystal ball container was edited out in TV airings. Similarly, Trunks wetting on Broly was also omitted.
Dragon Ball Z: Bio-Broly[]
- Like above, Trunks' mooning and flipping off to Bio-Broly in the climax was heavily censored by zooming in close to Trunks' face.
Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn[]
- While the Nicktoons airing of this movie was almost entirely uncut, this did not apply to any scenes that included The Dictator. The same happens to the French, German, Hebrew and Castilian Spanish dubs, due to strict laws in Germany about references to the Nazi regime, as well as avoid offending Israelis and Holocaust survivors after World War II.
Manga to Anime censorship[]
Even the original Japanese manga was censored for the Japanese anime adaptation.
Dragon Ball Z[]
- Tien Shinhan's arm is dripping blood after Nappa cut his forearm off, in the anime, it's clean, with little to no blood.
- After being hit by his own attack, Frieza has guts hanging out in the manga, in the anime, it's a clean cut.
- Dr. Gero actually rips his victims head off in the manga, instead of dropping his dead body off on the ground like in the anime.
- Dr. Gero's death at the hands of Android 17 is gorier in the manga, showing his brains under 17's foot. In the anime, his head being crushed is heard but not directly shown save for a comparatively small blood splash.
- Android 16's death is gorier in the manga, showing his eyeball popping out of his sockets.
- When Gohan kills Cell Juniors, guts are seen from their corpses, in the anime they explode.
- The old man was shot by Future Android 17 in the manga, he was saved by Future Trunks in the anime. In the English version of the manga, the old man is killed either by being shot or being punched (depending on the manga version; see below).
- Yakon's eyeball is seen in the manga after he was overloaded by Goku's ki.
Manga self-censorship[]
In some cases, the Japanese manga ended up censored while being localized.
Dragon Ball[]
Dragon Balls in Danger!![]
- Bulma's shower scene was left uncensored in the original VIZ releases but in the early releases and VIZBIG editions, soap bubbles were placed to cover her buttocks and her breasts.
The Treasure![]
In the VIZ release, Bulma after General Blue refused her advances, she says "Phooey... Must be gay..." In the Full Color version, Bulma's reaction was significantly coarser, saying "Gege... He's a f--...", which is a derogatory term towards homosexuals. Blue's response was likewise toned down in the VIZ release to have him say "W-Who are you calling a... a you-know-what?!", implying he was closeted. In the Full Color version, he instead angrily reacted to Bulma's aforementioned coarse terminology of him.
Bright Blue Eyes[]
When Bulma attempts to seduce General Blue in an attempt at saving Krillin (and herself) from being killed by him only for him to reject her, she originally remembered that Blue was gay and hated women. While the VIZ translation does retain her deduction for the most part, she makes no reference to his misogyny. The original manga also has Blue angrily denounce Bulma's attempt to trick him by claiming she was actually male by citing that no male would ever have breasts, especially none that were as large as Bulma's. The VIZ translation avoids referencing her breasts and instead had Blue yelling that she was a sick freak of nature (implying both that he believed her, and he held anti-Transvestite views). On a similar note, Blue's statement when rejecting her advances was toned down slightly by him barely attempting to politely tell her to stop doing that in the VIZ translation. In the Full Color Manga, he used far stronger wording by calling her an indecent girl for trying to seduce him like that.
Dragon Ball Z[]
- In the original manga, Future Android 17 kills the Parsley City old man by shooting him up his chin with his own pistol. In the VIZ edition, this was changed to 17 instead punching the old man hard enough to kill him.
Censorship in Kakarot[]
Several scenes that were adapted in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot have been censored from the way they were in the anime.
- Instead of him flying back and crashing into the car, the farmer is knocked to the ground after Raditz shoots back his bullet at him.
- When Raditz beats Goku and kidnaps Gohan, he didn't use Heavy Finish on Goku's stomach.
- Aside from Nappa amputating Tien's arm, all scenes of characters being amputated are cut out.
- The hole left from the Special Beam Cannon Piccolo pierces Goku and Raditz with is depicted without blood and is painted black to reduce the severity of the attack.
- Gohan's pants remain intact after reverting from his Great Ape form as opposed to being entirely naked in the anime.
- Instead of snapping his neck, Dodoria instead dashes into Moori and punches him in the face, knocking him away instead.
- Dodoria isn't shown being disintegrated by Vegeta's energy wave, he is simply shown looking back at it before a large explosion.
- Instead of using Final Galick Cannon against Zarbon after punching a hole in his stomach, he is simply shown badly beaten, falling out of the sky into the Namekian Waters.
- Guldo isn't decapitated by Vegeta in this version, he simply dies after losing to Gohan and Krillin.
- Gohan's neck isn't snapped by Recoome, he simply gets beaten to near death before Goku heals him with a Senzu Bean.
- The scene where Vegeta mercilessly executes a defeated Recoome and Burter is cut out.
- Vegeta doesn't chop Jeice in the ribs before his Genocide Breaker, instead he simply teleports behind him and fires the attack.
- Instead of Frieza throwing Vegeta into a boulder and torturing him by punching his back several times, he just throws him to the ground before Goku arrives.
- Goku hasn't buried Vegeta's corpse after Vegeta being killed by Frieza, unlike in the manga and anime. However, his corpse disappears when Goku fights Frieza, but he reappears after he was revived by the Dragon Balls during the fight between Super Saiyan Goku and Frieza.
- Frieza's bisection is depicted without any blood compared to the anime.
- The Frieza Force soldiers that Future Trunks killed kept their bodies intact as opposed to being chopped into pieces in the anime. Likewise, Mecha-Frieza gets quickly disintegrated just as he is shown to get bisected.
- Instead of pulling Android 19's arms off before finishing him off, Vegeta instead beats him before destroying him with his Big Bang Attack.
- Instead of being inflated by Babidi until he explodes, Spopovich gets disintegrated along with Yamu by Pui-Pui's attack.
- Instead of being bisected in half, Babidi simply gets struck to near death by Piccolo.
- Babidi is not decapitated before being killed by Majin Buu, instead he is simply thrown before being blasted.
- Smitty's fate in the game ended up being the same as Van Zant's in that he gets disintegrated albeit by Super Buu instead of Evil Buu as opposed to him entering Smitty's body and expanding until he explodes.
- Nobody is shown being struck during Super Buu's Human Extinction Attack.
