Goku is a character in the Dragon Ball metaseries created by Akira Toriyama and is the main protagonist in the Dragon Ball universe. Goku means aware of emptiness (The 'Go' syllable means enlightenment, and the 'Ku' syllable means Sky or Emptiness). Goku's last name, Son, is derived from 'Sun' Wukong, which shows how the monkey-tailed boy is based from the famous Monkey-King from Journey to the West. At first, he is depicted as a direct parody of the character Sun Wukong, who appears as the main protagonist in the Chinese legend Journey to the West. Journey to the West tells the story of a monkey king named Sun Wukong, who searches for the seven dragon pearls which are guarded by a dragon in the West. Sun Wukong's noted possessions are a magical staff and a flying cloud, just like Goku has in the Dragon Ball series.Akira Toriyama's "Dragon Ball" at first directly parodies this series, but quickly departs from it after the first saga. It then develops more into a martial arts series, instead of it heavily focusing on fantasy stories like in the beginning.

Overview
  +

  +
Goku is the main character in the entire Dragon Ball series. With spiky black hair and his trademark orange/red/golden and blue clothes, Goku is known for his cheerful, energetic personality, love of competition (specifically sport fighting) and eating. He has remarkable intuition at seeing the good in others in spite of their actions, though his capacity for forgiving his enemies has occasionally been criticized as excessive; Goku, for the most part, only fights to win, and spares his enemies after defeating them only for them to attack him when his back is turned. His staggering power is simultaneously reined in and enhanced by his fierce loyalty and morality. He has a simple, practical view of the world and is somewhat naive to the world around him. Because of this, many characters incorrectly assume him to be somewhat stupid, although once he has a basic understanding of things, he learns very quickly. His most remarkable ability is his will to succeed, pushing himself beyond his limitations, and never giving up even when the odds are stacked against him.
  +
  +
Despite his almost limitless skills, good-hearted spirit, and courage, Goku is shown to suffer from severe trypanophobia, or the fear of medical needles. He showed his fear for them twice in Dragon Ball Z, and three times in Dragon Ball GT. The first time was after his battle with Vegeta, and when he was taken to the hospital. When the doctor was going to give him a sedative, or some kind of pain killer, he wailed and cried constantly, annoying Chi-Chi to the point of her intentional departure from the hospital to attend to other important matters; when he was injected, he screamed so loud that those outside the hospital heard him. The second time he showed his fear of needles was after the fight with Captain Ginyu on Namek. Goku successfully got his body back from Captain Ginyu, but it had been severely beaten by Vegeta earlier when Captain Ginyu fought him in Goku's body. Vegeta knew he'd need Goku to help defeat Frieza, so he had Goku placed in a rejuvenation tank to be healed. While Vegeta was clearing all of the unnecessary equipment off of the tables, a needle fell out of a storage box. Goku saw it, squealed in fear and tried to run off, begging Vegeta not to use it, but after Vegeta clarified that he wasn't even going to give him one, calling him an idiot in the process, he immediately calmed down and said, "Oh, never mind, then". Then in Dragon Ball GT, when Goku, Pan, and Trunks brought an injured boy to the Hospital Planet of the universe, Goku cowered under a couch and stated, "Doctors give shots. I hate shots, so I avoid doctors"; when Pan and Trunks considered this uproariously funny, Goku says to himself, "They won't think it's so funny when they get the needle." Later, he climbed a tree and refused to come down, but calmed down after the doctor told him that they would never give shots to visitors. The second time, during his first battle against Baby Vegeta, he was blasted into Sogorugo Space, where he had to win a life-sized board game to live. On one space, he had to refrain from crying, but almost failed when a hologram of Chi-Chi threw a gigantic needle at him. After learning from Pan that the four-star Dragon Ball was coming out of his forehead, he began to freak out and shouted, "Better be a pimple, because I am not going to the hospital! I do not wanna get a shot!"
  +
  +
Even in combat, Goku is shown to not be invincible, as he has two major weaknesses. The first weakness is his tail; before he conditioned himself prior to the Tien Shinhan Saga, Goku lost all his power when someone grabbed his tail (a trait that all Saiyans share at birth). The second is his ridiculous appetite; not only does he eat at a rate that would make other people lose their appetite, but if he doesn't get any food, he becomes too weak to do almost anything. This weakness was never overcome, and almost got him killed against Nuova Shenron. On the flipside, however, Goku's love for food has gotten him out of a pickle several times; for example, in the Tournament Saga, when put to sleep by Jackie Chun, Bulma was able to save his match by screaming to him that dinner was ready, to which Goku immediately woke up to break the count.

  +
  +
Goku was born sometime in 737 A.D. on Planet Vegeta. His Father is Bardock and his older brother is Raditz while his mother has never been revealed. After crash-landing on Earth, Goku becomes the adopted grandson of Grandpa Gohan. At first, he was a very savage baby, not obeying Gohan at all, but one day he fell down a ravine and suffered severe head trauma that sent him into a coma and very nearly killed him. After he woke up, he became a very nice young boy. Grandpa Gohan taught him martial arts and told him about such things as the city. Gohan found out one day about Goku's full moon transformation and told him to never look at the full moon but one night he did and he transformed into the Great Ape killing his grandpa Gohan. After his grandpa's death he still stayed at his home at Mount Paozu carrying out his daily life of survival. From a young age, Goku developed the impression that his birth parents abandoned him in the mountains as a baby, leaving him for Grandpa Gohan to discover. (initially he claims to be 14, but it is later clarified during the Tournament Saga that this is because Goku had trouble counting), as a young boy living in obscurity on Mount Paozu.

In the original Dragon Ball series, he accompanies Bulma and soon afterward Oolong, as they try to acquire the seven Dragon Balls together. During their initial quest Goku confronts Yamcha who at first challenges Goku, but is soon overcome and then, along with his best friend Puar, joins him and the others. On the way he meets the Ox King who trained with his Grandfather and offers Goku to marry his daughter Chi-Chi one day. In the end they stop Emperor Pilaf from taking over the world and discover that Goku can turn into a Great Ape when he looks at the full moon. As a result, Yamcha cuts off Goku's tail using Puar as a pair of scissors. In the end, Oolong is the first to speculate that Goku is not an Earthling, raising the question of whether he is "some kinda space alien."<ref>Dragon Ball manga. Krillin is his rival at first, but they soon become best friends after the World Tournament. In the Tournament Goku is reunited with his friends Bulma, Yamcha, Oolong and Puar. He passes through the competition against Giran in the quarterfinals and Nam in the semifinals. In the match against Giran his tail also comes back. Goku loses in the final round against Jackie Chun who secretly is Master Roshi after a long four hours, as stated by the announcer.

Along the way he confronts the ruthless Red Ribbon Army who are also seeking the seven Dragon Balls and have no scruples with killing anyone — even women or children — who get in their way. Goku first defeats Colonel Silver and ends up traveling to Jingle Village where he meets Sno. Goku battles through Muscle Tower defeating many of General White's Minions. Goku then befriends a defective android Android 8 and they defeat General White. Goku then battles and defeats General Blue the Red Ribbon Army's most powerful operative with the help of Arale Norimaki. When that failed they turned to world's deadliest assassin, Mercenary Tao to kill him. Tao at first is too much for Goku, but with the assassin thinking him dead, Goku climbs Korin Tower to be trained by Korin and then defeats Tao. After Tao is defeated (presumed dead until a later saga) by his own grenade, Goku promises his new friend Upa that he will use the Dragon Balls to revive his father Bora who's life was taken by Tao. Goku then storms the Red Ribbon Army's fortress and kills Staff Officer Black, defeating the entire army.

Roshi tells Goku of his older sister Baba who can find anything. Goku sets out to fortune teller baba's palace with Yamcha, Krillin, Upa and Puar. Baba then turns out to not be so generous forcing them to fight her five strongest warriors to get their request. The first two warriors were taken care of by the rest but Yamcha was defeated by the third warrior Bandages the Mummy. Goku, their teams last fighter takes him out along with the fourth fighter Spike the Devil Man. Goku is put up against the fifth fighter who seems very strange and familiar to Goku and Roshi. Goku's next major opponent is Tien, a warrior trained by Master Roshi's nemesis, Master Shen the Crane Hermit. Like Yamcha and Puar before them, Tien along with his best friend Chiaotzu, eventually side with Goku.

In the Preliminaries Goku is set up against a previous Champion from the 20th World Tournament King Chappa. Goku defeats him and then defeats Panpoot a famous movie star in the quarterfinals. In the Semi finals Goku is set up against his best friend Krillin and defeats him in a fierce battle. Goku fought Tien and his crane style in the final round. Tien then uses the ki blast cannon attack to destroy the stage. In mid-air Tien and Goku knock each other out. Goku gets angry and chases after him through the skies. A tired Goku is defeated by him, and after he meets a samurai named Yajirobe who has a Dragon Ball. After sensing Yajirobe kill Cymbal, another one of Piccolo's sons, Piccolo orders Tambourine to find his killer. Upon seeing Tambourine again, Goku finally destroys him.

Soon after King Piccolo appears and swiftly defeats Goku with his Masenko attack, causing Goku's heart to stop for a short time. After a failed attempt to seal King Piccolo back up with the Evil Containment Wave by Master Roshi, King Piccolo wishes for his youth to be restored, giving him the power he once had. They both head to Korin Tower for Goku to recover. Once Goku is healed he heads out on a quest to find the Ultra Divine Water, a sacred liquid that unleashes the drinker's hidden powers if they have any, if not they simply die. Goku drinks the water and survives, then heads off to King Furry's castle where he finds King Piccolo's newest son Drum beating up Tien. Goku steps in and defeats Drum and challenges King Piccolo to a battle. Towards the end of the fight King Piccolo uses Tien as a hostage, attempting to force Goku to surrender, Goku nearly resumes the fight despite the fact Tien will die, until King Piccolo tells him he had destroyed Shenron.
  +
  +
Goku ends up with a broken arm and two broken legs. As King Piccolo takes to the skies for his final attack, Goku, full of rage over the fact that Krillin and Master Roshi are gone forever, fully launches himself at King Piccolo, punching a hole through his chest and killing him. Moments before King Piccolo's death however, he manages to spit out an egg far off in the distance that contains his final son and reincarnation, Piccolo Jr..

The fight goes on for awhile but when the word is out that he is the son of Piccolo the crowd flees and Piccolo uses his Super Namek form. The stage eventually blows up and they go into a full battle. In the end just as Goku was about to die he discovers how to fly and uses that energy to avoid one of Piccolo's attacks and then finishes him off with the last amount of energy he has left.
  +
At the start of the Dragon Ball Z series, New threats soon arrive as Raditz, Goku's older brother arrives from outer space. Raditz reveals to Goku his Saiyan heritage, and informs him that he was originally sent to Earth to destroy the planet (however, he apparently bumped his head, got amnesia, and lost all knowledge of his Saiyan warrior heritage, thus giving him a good-hearted personality). When Goku refuses to carry out his forgotten mission, Raditz quickly defeats him and kidnaps Gohan, giving Goku an ultimatum: Raditz will kill Gohan unless Goku kills one hundred humans within the next twenty-four hours.
  +
  +
To defeat Raditz and save the Earth, Goku and Piccolo join forces. Even with their combined strength, Raditz still holds the upper hand, until Goku makes the ultimate sacrifice by holding Raditz in place so Piccolo can kill him with the powerful Special Beam Cannon.
  +
  +
After Goku dies Kami takes him to the Other World where Goku learns that more powerful Saiyans were destined to arrive on the Earth in a year. King Yemma tells Goku to go across Snake Way to the planet of King Kai for additional training. On his way he eventually goes through the troubles of Princess Snake and even escaping Hell when he accidentally fell off. When Goku finally makes it to King Kai's Planet he is given ridiculous challenges by telling having to tell him a joke, catching Bubbles his pet monkey and smashing Gregory. After the challenges Goku masters several new techniques and increases his strength considerably. His friends on Earth manage to wish him back to life using the seven Dragon Balls just in time for him to join the battle against the Saiyans, which was already underway and going badly for the defenders of Earth.

By the time Goku arrived, Yamcha had been killed by a Saibaman, Chiaotzu had self-destructed, Tien had killed himself by putting all his strength into a final Tri-beam and Piccolo was massacred by Nappa, which also caused Kami to die as well. Goku had become powerful enough to defeat Nappa without much difficulty, but is pushed to his limits by the strength of Vegeta. Vegeta is outclassed by Goku's Kaio-ken technique and the timely intervention of his remaining companions Krillin, Gohan and Yajirobe. After the fight, Krillin attempts to take Vegeta's life, but is stopped by Goku, who convinces him to spare his life and hopes he can have a rematch one day. The battle against Frieza is furious, as he seems to be invincible. Even Goku's most powerful attack, the Spirit Bomb, fails to bring him down. However, when Frieza kills Krillin and critically injures Piccolo, Goku, in anger, taps into his inner power reserves and, enraged, transforms into a legendary Super Saiyan. A year later, Goku returned to Earth where he was confronted by Future Trunks, the half-Saiyan son of Vegeta and Bulma from the future who had just killed both Mecha-Frieza and his father King Cold just before Goku's arrival. Trunks then tests Goku's strength in battle. He does so by assaulting Goku furiously with his sword, which Goku knocks away multiple times with one finger.Satisfied, Trunks gives Goku medicine for a heart virus that he will contract in a few years and warns him about two androids that will threaten the Earth in three years. Goku, Gohan and piccolo then spend the next three years training for this new threat.

Three years later the Z fighters meet the androids which are Dr. Gero and Android 19. Goku is bested by Android 19 when he begins to drastically weaken from the heart disease he was warned of. Future Trunks prompts Goku three years prior to take the medicine when he begins to feel the virus' effects, but because Future Trunks' visit altered history, the virus was prolonged and as a result, Goku refrained from taking the serum. However, Vegeta who now is a Super Saiyan as well manages to save him before he can be defeated by the androids. In the meantime, Cell absorbed Android 18 and reached his perfect form. Vegeta and Trunks failed to defeat Cell. Goku came to save Tien while Cell announced to him the Cell Games where he will be taking on the earths most powerful warriors. For ten days Goku and Gohan stayed on earth to train in there Super Saiyan form the entire time. Goku went to the new namek to get Dende to be the new guardian of Earth. After ten days have past, Goku finds himself almost equally matched by a heavily suppressed Perfect Cell in every way, and cannot gain any upper hands. Even after trying the Instant Kamehameha (a combination of the Instant Transmission and Kamehameha), which destroys Perfect Cell's upper half, he watches in horror as the android regenerates easily. Goku decides to leave the battle to his son Gohan, who he convinced has the hidden power to defeat Cell. Gohan then states that Goku and Cell's battle wasn't that good, leading to the conclusion that Gohan is much stronger than Goku, who was fighting at full power. Gohan then fights with Cell, but half heartedly. When Cell destroys Android 16, however, this triggers a change in Gohan, forcing him to ascend to Super Saiyan 2, a form in which he greatly surpasses Perfect Cell.

Upon awakening, Goku could sense neither Vegeta nor Gohan anywhere and comes to the conclusion that they are dead. Goku then engages in a fight with Majin Buu, whom he over powers blow for blow. Amazingly, Majin Buu is still having a good time and enjoying the fight. He later states, that he probably could have won, but that he wanted to leave it in the hands of Gohan, Trunks, and Goten because he will not be there forever, and that they need to have a shot at saving the universe instead of a dead fighter. Unfortunately, the action of sustaining Super Saiyan 3 shortens Goku's time on Earth and he is forced to return to Other World.

When Gohan fails due to Super Buu's stolen powers, Elder Kai gives his life to Goku so that he may return to Earth to help Gohan. He is also given the Potara Earrings so that he can fuse with Gohan. He arrives, much to the surprise of Gohan and Super Buu, and tosses the earring to Gohan. Gohan misses for the grab, and Goku tells Gohan to hurry and find the earring. He stalls Super Buu while fighting as a Super Saiyan 3, after the fight, Gotenks defuses inside Super Buu, and his power drops to 1/3 of his original power. Goku states that he is not much of a threat anymore, and realizes that they can beat Super Buu easily. However, Gohan is absorbed when Super Buu commands a piece of him to absorb Gohan while he is caught off-guard. At this moment of despair, the newly resurrected Vegeta appears, and two of the most powerful Saiyans fuse to become Vegito, the strongest fighter in the Dragon Ball Z series.

Vegito then easily thrashes Super Buu around, even with Gohan absorbed. Super Buu tries every technique and attack he's got and throws them at the fused Saiyans, but Vegito manages to dodge by all of them without much trouble. After a lengthy fight, the thundering Vegito wins easily. However, Vegito is eventually absorbed by Super Buu. It is later revealed he chose to be absorbed on purpose because he wanted to rescue his friends and family before killing Super Buu. Inside Super Buu, Vegito automatically separates into the two Saiyans due to the properties of Super Buu's digestive system. After traveling through Super Buu's body, Goku and Vegeta reach Super Buu's brain where they find Gohan, Trunks, Goten, and Piccolo unconscious but still alive. After freeing them and having to fight Super Buu inside his own body (a fight which Goku and Vegeta can not win, which Goku clearly states. Since it is Super Buu's mind, he can keep regenerating his mental self repeatedly), so Vegeta decides to remove the unconscious Fat Buu, from Super Buu. Despite pleas from Super Buu, Vegeta pulls the Fat Buu free and Super Buu undergoes another transformation. Goku and Vegeta then escape from Super Buu's body with the newly rescued Z Fighters. At Vegeta's suggestion, Goku begins gathering energy for a Spirit Bomb.Using King Kai's telepathy Vegeta speaks to the people of Earth and begs for everyone to donate power to Goku's Spirit Bomb. After leaving Earth in the space ship designed by Bulma a piece of the ship falls off and Goku, Trunks, and Pan are forced to crash land on the planet Imecka to get the parts needed to repair the ship. Groups of merchants swarm Goku and the others and they have to go to the gold star hotel to hide from the swarms of sellers. They then realize they are being charged every second for everything in the hotel including the lights. They escape without paying and stumble upon the house of an old couple and their children. They talk about Don Kee the ruler of the planet and how he mistreats his rule, just then Don Kee's men come and repossess the old couple's house saying they where behind payment. Goku suggests that they go and fight Don Kee but the couple says that is impossible because of his grand army. After briefly sneaking around a large rock falls on Trunks' head and Giru starts making noises that alarm the guards. The guards open fire on Goku and the others and Pan says that they must fight now so Goku agrees. Pan jumps in the carrying car while Goku moves the ship onto the car and Pan drives the ship out of the palace with Goku and Trunks. But while escaping, Don Kee's henchmen Gale and Sheila fire a ki blast at Goku who reflects it back with ease towards Ledgic Don Kee's right hand man who recognizes them as Saiyans. Goku and the others escape but Trunks says they have to go back into town for more more parts due to Pan's "reckless driving".

Once they reach the town everyone hides and Trunks finds the three of them on Immecka's most wanted list. While running from Don Kee's men they fall into the house of a nice old couple who offer them food after realizing Goku and company mean no harm. They say that Don Kee made it a law that no one is allowed to own a ship so that no one would escape the planet including the old couple. Pan gets fed up and convinces Goku and Trunks to go face Don Kee head on. They turn themselves in to the police and get brought to the palace. Once there Goku and Trunks and Pan incapacitate Gale, Sheila, and all of Don Kee's guards. Then Goku blasts his way into Don Kee's throne-room. Don Kee sicks Ledgic on the fighters after capturing Pan in an energy chamber. Ledgic says that he will fight Goku but for his own satisfaction. After a short fight Goku defeats Ledgic and they take down Don Kee and make him give everyone free rent and give them back their ships free of charge. Plus Don Kee gives them the parts they need for free and They leave Immecka. They then land on an unnamed planet where everything is larger than life. Goku finds the Four Star Ball in the tooth of a giant and they go to the next planet.

On planet Kelbo they find the Six Star Ball in the hair of the princess of the village, Leing. Trunks asks for the ball but her fiance' Doma said that they were in a large problem already. The amphibian creature Zoonama was threatening the village with earthquakes and volcanoes if they didn't give him Leing. Goku decides that he would help them out in exchange for the Dragon Ball and they agree. Pan comes up with the idea to disguise Goku as Leing but it doesn't work out and Trunks poses as Leing instead. Zoonama coms and takes Trunks to his layer. Trunks gets Zoonama tipsy and Goku arrives with Pan and Doma. Doma slices off Zoonama's left whisker with a huge pair of scissors and as he cuts off the left one Zoonama awakens in a drunken rage. He begins to wiggle his whiskers and an earthquake begins to come but stops soon after while Zoonama continues to wiggle his whisker. Pan realizes that he can't cause earthquakes only predict them but now he is so tipsy that he didn't realize that the quake was over. Suddenly a really big earthquake erupts and Goku and the others leave the cavern with Zoonama. Goku then stops the huge volcano with a Kamehameha wave saving the city and winning the Dragon Ball. They travel back to find Goku and the others and they get hypnotized by the Para brothers until they are saved by the hungry Mouma. Pan goes aboard the Para brother's ship to find the Dragon Ball that they stole. She accidentally activates the auto-pilot and is brought to Luud. There she is captured and turned into a doll for the evil lord Dolltaki. Goku shows up with Trunks and kills Cardinal Mutchy Mutchy, who reveals that he is actually two parts the body and the whip which transforms into Mutchie and fights Goku. Trunks finishes Mutchie off with Flash Bang and saves Goku from his whip arms. Then Dolltaki turns everyone except for Goku, himself, Trunks, and Pan into dolls and feeds them to the machine deity Luud. Dolltaki then awakens Luud who takes him and Pan inside of Luud's body to gain their energy. While Luud fights Goku and Trunks Pan forces Dolltaki to tell her the weakness of the seemingly invincible Luud. Dolltaki reveals that Goku must strike the outside of Luud's mechanical heart while Pan strikes the inside at the exact same time. They have been told they can't destroy it because it is inhabited, and at the time they didn't know who inhabited it.
  +
  +
Eventually reaching Earth, they attempt to carry out the same destruction there that they had at a countless number of other planets. The way they dominated a planet was to literally change its atmosphere, freezing the planet. By conforming it to their liking, they made it more suitable for themselves and almost unlivable for any other people, including the native occupants of the planet.
  +
  +
Lord Slug turned out to be stiff competition, he had aged hundreds of years and was rapidly approaching the end of his life. He managed to gather the Dragon Balls knowing of their power because of his Namekian heritage and used them to restore his youth and health; like King Piccolo before him, being fully restored gave him a far greater power.
  +
  +
Goku along with his son Gohan and Piccolo squared off against Slug's team and managed to defeat them all. The final battle against Slug was left in the hands of Goku. The battle was not going well for Goku until he was discarded by Slug who drew his attention away to Piccolo.
  +
  +
Goku was able to take Slug on in an incredibly fierce battle. Slug possessed the ability to transform into a giant version of himself but thanks to Piccolo's quick thinking in using Slug's sensitive hearing against him, Slug was weakened by this.
  +
  +
Exploiting a weakness of all Namekians; their extremely sensitive hearing, Gohan's whistling was able to bring Slug to his knees (Piccolo had earlier torn off his ears, so he wasn't harmed by this strategy). Piccolo also gave what little strength remained in him to Goku in his battle against Slug. Thanks to Piccolo, Goku was able to transform into a False Super Saiyan, and managed to thrash around the Super Namek with ease.
  +
  +
The movie ends with Goku flying up into the clouds to deliver the final blow to Slug with a Spirit Bomb. The Bomb heads straight into the freezing generator, taking Slug with it and destroying him.
  +
  +
The final scene involves Master Roshi waking up from his nap which he started before the aliens landed and he wishes that something interesting would happen.

Cooler's Revenge
  +
In this movie Goku and some of his friends; Gohan, Krillin, Oolong and Icarus go camping, when Goku is catching some fish Gohan and the others are attacked by Cooler's Armored Squadron, the members are Salza, Naise and Dore. Goku noticed this and goes to them and he fights Salza, Naise and Dore for a little while, when Goku lands on the ground he sees someone behind him, he first thinks it's Frieza, but is appears to be someone else, Cooler. Gohan flies up to help Goku bit Cooler fires a Kousengan at him but Goku jumps in front of Gohan and is hit with the Kousengan, Goku then falls down in the water, Cooler flies after him and fires a blast but Goku is already gone.
  +
  +
Later Goku and Gohan come on the side of the river and Gohan sees that Goku's back is badly burned and he bring Goku to a cave were he can rest. Cooler's Armored Squadron hear from Cooler that they have to find Goku, but their scouters can't pick up any energy because Goku and Gohan lowered their powers, so Cooler's Armored Squadron blow everything up. Then Krillin, Oolong and Icarus find Goku in the cave and they come to the conclusion that Gohan has to get some Senzu Beans at Korin who live at the top of Korin Tower. Gohan uses Icarus to fly to the tower because if Gohan would fly himself the scouters can pick his power up. When Gohan comes to the Korin Tower he gets off Icarus and climbs the rest of the tower, when he is at Korin's Korin won't give him Senzu Beans because he didn't climb the whole tower and he has to start over again, but then Yajirobe says "Catch" and he trows a bag of Senzu Beans to Gohan he also gives Gohan the Senzu Bean that Korin just wanted to eat.
  +
  +
When Gohan uses Icarus to fly back to Goku Icarus is getting tired and flies really slow then Gohan gives him a Senzu Bean, the scouters noticed this and come after Gohan, when Cooler's Armored Squadron fight him Gohan is quickly defeated and then Piccolo shows up and help Gohan. Piccolo kills Dore and Naise and fights Salza. When Cooler shows up in front of the sun Piccolo thinks it Frieza and Cooler shoots him trough the heart and says that Salza has to go after Gohan. In the meantime Gohan comes by the cave and when he wants to give the bag with Senzu Beans to Krillin Salza shoot is down and burns the Senzu Beans, this makes Krillin very angry and he attacks Salza even that he knows he is no match for him. Then Gohan remembers that Yajirobe thrown the Senzu Bean that Korin wanted to eat at him and Gohan gives that Senzu Bean to Goku.
  +

  +
Salza already defeated Krillin sees on his scouter that there comes a quickly raising power out of the cave and his scouter explodes. Then Goku comes out of the cave and Cooler also shows up, Cooler says that Goku may have his Namekian back and throws Piccolo at Goku, when Goku wanted to catch him Cooler makes him explode. This makes Goku very angry and Salza attacks Goku and punches him in the face but this does nothing to Goku and Goku powers up, Salza is blown in the rocks. Then Goku starts to fight Cooler and Goku has the upper hand but then Cooler transforms one more time than Frieza did. With this transformation, he plays with Goku like he is nothing but then Goku goes Super Saiyan and Cooler is no match for Goku. Cooler throws a blast at Goku and Goku stands up like it was nothing but when the smoke faded away Goku sees that Cooler made a Supernova, Cooler says that he can gather energy way quicker then Frieza and then throws the Supernova at Goku. Goku tries to stop it with his bare hands and when he is pushed into the Earth, he uses a Kamehameha blast to push the Supernova back at Cooler, who is pushed by the attack into the sun where he nearly disintegrates.
  +
  +
Goku is out of energy and lies on the ground and the others except Piccolo come to him, when they think they hear Piccolo under the rocks it appears it's Salza, but then Salza is killed with a Special Beam Cannon that only one person can generate and that is Piccolo.

In this movie Goku and his friends; Gohan, Piccolo, Krillin, Master Roshi, Yajirobe and Oolong go to New Namek. when they come there they see that all the Namekians are trapped by some robots, when Goku says they have to go away Cooler appears and says that they aren't programmed to speak or think, only to do what he wants. Then Cooler explains that he didn't die because he was luckily enough to be picked up by the Big Gete Star and so he was completely restored and even made stronger and better. Goku starts to fight Cooler but Goku is no match for Cooler and to make it worse, Cooler knows Instant Transmission. Even when Goku used Kaio-ken he was no match for Cooler and one of Goku strongest punches didn't even make a scratch on Cooler.
  +
  +
In the meantime, Master Roshi, Yajirobe and Oolong have to fight one of the robots, Yajirobe and Oolong stand against a while shacking but then Master Roshi shows what he has and punches the robot in his stomach but this only resulted in a painful hand for Master Roshi and the robot caught them and brought them away. Gohan, Piccolo and Krillin are also fighting an army of the robots and discoverer that the weak spot is to just concentrate all you power into one place and then punch or kick them one time, this result in many of the robots exploding. A little later Gohan and Krillin are caught and brought away, Piccolo is still standing and he blows all of the robots up and goes after Gohan and Krillin to save them.

  +
With no other choice, Goku transforms into his Super Saiyan form to take down this tyrant. But even in this form, Goku is still unable to defeat Cooler, with Cooler displaying a new technique of regeneration when Goku ripped out his arm. As Cooler prepared to finish Goku off, Vegeta arrived, saving Goku, and immediately turned into a Super Saiyan to defeat Cooler. Unfortunately, Vegeta is still overpowered. Nonetheless, they finally manage to destroy Cooler by crashing into both sides of him and before he could regenerate, they would unleash a barrage of destructive Ki Blasts at the Metal Lord, killing him. Due to the amount of energy wasted on this, Goku and Vegeta are completely worn out and to their shock, an army of 1,000,000 Metal Coolers were awaiting them. Goku and Vegeta are easily defeated by the diabolical army and with them unconscious, their energy is transferred into The Big Gete Star. Luckily, the two had more power than Cooler thought and they managed to break free from the transferring.
  +
  +
As Cooler is shocked to see that Super Saiyans are so powerful, it is revealed that due to the intense burn he had from the sun, the remains of Cooler's head merged with The Big Gete Star, explaining how he's in control of it. Goku immediately tries to finish Cooler off, only to be strangled by his intense wiring. When all hope seems lost, Vegeta intervenes and fires a final energy blast at Cooler, saving Goku. With Cooler damaged greatly, Goku finally manages to destroy Cooler for good, destroying all of his army in the process, saving the likes of Piccolo and the others.
  +
  +
When Goku and Vegeta came back from the ship they were trapped on everybody was really happy but because Goku and Vegeta used all their power they didn't even have the strength to fly so they fell down and Yajirobe gave them Senzu Beans. They then went back to earth with the ship that Bulma made for them, thanking Vegeta for his help. As for Vegeta, he leaves in a Space Pod and destroys a remaining piece of Metal Cooler in his hand.

Super Android 13!
  +
In this movie Goku is in the city shopping with Chi-Chi and Gohan, when they are eating in a restaurant they are attacked by Android 14 and Android 15, Goku quickly finds out that they are from the Red Ribbon Army. When they started fighting Goku isn't that much of a match for them but then Future Trunks comes to help Goku, and Goku says they can better go out of the city so they can't destroy anything there, this is fine with the Androids because their only goal is killing Goku and everything that stands in their way. They go to some place with a lot of ice and start fighting again. They quickly have them both down and then Android 13 appears. Then Goku starts to fight Android 13 and Trunks has to take Android 14 and Android 15 on. When Android 13 fires a S.S. Deadly Bomber at Goku and Goku wants to stop it with his hand but then Vegeta steps in and blows the S.S. Deadly Bomber away.
  +

  +
Goku starts fighting Android 13 again and now Vegeta takes Android 15 and Trunks takes Android 14, Goku, Vegeta and Trunks are getting beaten but then they go Super Saiyan and Vegeta and Trunks destroy their respective Androids. Now Goku was Super Saiyan but that only made him equal with Android 13.
  +
Then Gohan and Krillin who already had arrived on the scene a little while ago, attack Android 13 with a Masenko but this didn't hurt Android 13 and he throws a blast at Gohan but his blast is deflected by Piccolo. Piccolo then goes to help Goku battle Android 13, along with Vegeta and Trunks, and Android 13 knows he doesn't stand a change against these warriors. Thus, Android 13 absorbs some parts of Android 14 and Android 15 and then Android 13 starts to transform into a big blue being with red hair, becoming Super Android 13.
  +
  +
Nobody stands a change against Super Android 13 and are all beaten, when Goku is kicked into the water he starts to make a Spirit Bomb. When Super Android 13 noticed this he tries to make a S.S. Deadly Bomber to blow the Spirit Bomb away, but he fails because everybody is attacking him, Piccolo even lifted him up so he missed. Now Goku has all the power but its still not enough and he goes Super Saiyan, and by doing this Goku absorbs the Spirit Bomb into himself. Almost all the land fades away and only Super Android 13 stands up and Goku starts coming closer to him until he also is in the absorbed Spirit Bomb and then he tries to punch Goku. Goku dodges this and Super Android 13 burns his hand. Goku then punches him through the stomach and Super Android 13 explodes.
  +
  +
*Note: Goku absorbed the Spirit Bomb because at that time, he had not yet mastered the Super Saiyan form, meaning he was subject to the anger and ruthlessness that the transformation causes. Thus, he could not use the Spirit Bomb technique as his heart was not pure at that time.

Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan
  +

  +
As the movie opens, Goku is in a suit to help Chi-Chi with getting Gohan in a school but King Kai interrupts this, saying Goku has to come because something terrible was happening: the Legendary Super Saiyan was on a rampage. After Goku finishes eating, King Kai explains the problem and Goku starts on his search for the Legendary Super Saiyan, by sensing the ki of the Legendary Super Saiyan that could almost be felt throughout the whole universe. When Goku was following the ki he came to a planet called New Planet Vegeta where he also met Krillin, Vegeta, Future Trunks, Master Roshi and Oolong. They said they where brought there by a guy named Paragus who came to pick up Prince Vegeta because he wanted the <u>S</u><u>aiyans</u> to be reborn. When Goku was in the castle of Paragus he met Paragus' son Broly who was very angry at Goku for some reason and Paragus had to control him. Later in the evening Goku was sleeping and Broly attacked Goku as a Super Saiyan. Broly was later held back by the control device of his father.
  +

  +
The next day when Vegeta wanted to leave, Broly became the Legendary Super Saiyan and broke the control device and he attacked Goku and Gohan. Goku, Gohan, and Future Trunks fought the Saiyan in their most powerful forms yet. Later Piccolo came and gave everybody a Senzu Bean and they started fighting Broly again but were all quickly defeated again. Vegeta, who was scared this whole time, also decided to fight later. However, even with the additions of Vegeta and Piccolo, the 5 fighters were still no match for Broly. Later, Paragus tried to escape the planet in a Space Pod, but Broly crushed his Space Pod (and Paragus) and threw it in the meteor that was coming for the planet. Later when everybody was worn out and couldn't fight anymore, Goku was still standing and asked his friends to give him their energy. After Vegeta recluctantly gives his energy to Goku, along with Piccolo's, Gohan's, and Trunks's, Goku had enough energy to kill Broly with one punch in the stomach . Broly explodes right after. Then Goku used Instant Transmission to teleport himself and his friends into the Capsule Corporation spaceship that Piccolo brought to the planet.

*Note: Broly was nearly killed in this movie and he reappeared in the movie Broly: The Second Coming.

In this movie Goku was fighting with Pikkon in the Other World tournament ring when Janemba appeared and the barriers between dimensions were disrupted. Because Other World was no longer isolated from the physical plane, those who had died were able to walk amongst the living. Goku used Instant Transmission to go to King Yemma's check-in station with Pikkon and saw the first form of Janemba sitting on the station's roof. Eager to engage Janemba in battle, Goku gleefully left Pikkon behind to free Yemma (much to Pikkon's dismay). Goku was soon forced to use his Super Saiyan 3 form to combat Janemba's unique arsenal of techniques. At Super Saiyan 3, Goku made quick work of Janemba, only to be sorely outclassed when Janemba transformed into a smaller, fiercer demon. Vegeta soon arrived on the scene (no longer being confined to Hell due to the disruption in the dimensional barriers) and was persuaded by Goku to attempt the Fusion Dance. Their first attempt failed and produced a fat Veku. Due to sheer luck, they were able to survive against Janemba until the fusion expired. After regrouping, Goku and Vegeta were able to fuse properly while Pikkon distracted Janemba. Gogeta appeared as Super Saiyan and destroyed Janemba with ease. Later, Goku and Vegeta are seen standing at the Blood Pond where Vegeta vanishes and goes back to Hell.

  +
In this movie Goku tries to open a magic music box that he had gotten from Hoy but he can't open it, so they go and find the Dragonballs to summon Shenron. When Shenron opened the box Tapion came out. Because Tapion was freed the upper half of Hirudegarn was also freed, the lower half was already attacking the city but Gohan was working on stopping him.
  +
  +
The next day Tapion went to Trunks' home and Bulma made him a house with the same material as the music box so Tapion could sleep without worrying about Hirudegarn, but when Tapion went to sleep Hirudegarn escaped and found his lower half thus making him one monster again. When Goku, Gohan and Goten try to attack him it does nothing because he is to fast. Later Gotenks is formed and he gets Hirudegarn down but it only made him transform and Hirudegarn knocked Gotenks down. When there was almost no hope left Goku transformed into Super Saiyan 3 and started to fight Hirudegarn, when Trunks wanted to help Goku, he said that he wanted to handle Hirudegarn alone. Then he catches a few punches from Hirudegarn, and when Hirudegarn wanted to throw another punch Goku jumped over it and did the Dragon Fist at Hirudegarn thus destroying Hirudegarn.

Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!!
In this special, Goku becomes a radish farmer (the name pun of his brother Raditz). Goku and his family are invited by Mr. Satan to come to the opening of his hotel, at first Goku is reluctant to go; but when he hears he may eat as much as he wants, he goes. When he gets to the hotel, he first has a little food competition with Vegeta, later when they are eating they feel the ki of two beings heading for earth, as a result Goku and the others go and check it out. They appear to be Gure and Tarble, the little brother of Vegeta, Tarble tells them two strong enemies and former servant's of Frieza are coming to earth. Goku wants to fight them, but when the other fighters show they want to fight. They then begin to argue until they agree to pick radishes; a game that declares the one with the longest radish as the winner, this is Trunks. When they go back to the hotel Abo and Cado arrive, Goku tells Goten that he may help Trunks with his fight. Goten and Trunks defeat Abo and Cado, so Abo and Cado merge into Aka; because of this Goten and Trunks decide to fuse into Gotenks to even the match. After a short fight Aka starts to overpower Gotenks with strong attacks, when Gotenks can't handle it anymore Goku and Vegeta intervene after Aka launches a massive energy attack. Goku plays a "dirty trick" on Vegeta so he can fight alone, and then goes Super Saiyan to do a Kamehameha on the energy attack Aka launched. The Kamehameha dissipates Aka's energy blast, after that Goku punches Aka in the gut, thus making Aka split up. Afterward they resume the banquet they were having before the arrival of Gure and Tarble, this time with the addition of Abo and Cado eating Goku's radish. As they eat, Goku and Vegeta begin to argue and turn Super Saiyan. It ends with everyone happily watching the argument except for Chi-Chi and Bulma.

Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans
  +
In this special, Goku is training in front of his house when Chi-Chi screams that dinner is ready then Goku says he has the feeling it is going to be a good day, Gohan comes with the firewood and says that the wood is dying.
  +
Mr. Popo also comes and tells that the new Kami-sama (Dende) told him that a gas called Destron Gas which doesn't belong on earth is accumulating the earth, the Destron Gas destroys all the living cellular tissues.
  +
Gohan think that the Destron Gas is the reason that the woods are dying, then Mr. Popo says that all living beings even Goku and Gohan will die within seventy days. Gohan says that they have to tell Bulma about this and Goku and agrees and then go, leaving Chi-chi screaming if they will come for dinner.
  +
  +
Bulma doesn't know the Destron Gas and Goku asks Mr. Popo where the Destron Gas comes from, Mr. Popo says there are four places where it comes from, the first place is the Grand Apron that is located southwest of the capital in the far east, the second is near the pyramid in the dessert far west of the Northern Capital, the third one is one the island with the Poco Poco volcano which has been erupting more than a hundred years in a desolate island in the Southern Sea and the fourth one is in the Land of Ice far up the north.
  +
When they go outside they meet Piccolo and then are attacked by two monsters, Goku says that he doesn't have the time to play with them and goes Super Saiyan and tries to fade them away with a Kamehameha but he can't make a Kamehameha anymore and the same goes for Gohan and Piccolo, Mr. Popo tells them that the Destron Gas does this because it doesn't let you concentrate your Ki.
  +
Then Goku and his friends just kill them with some punches and kicks.
  +
Goku goes to the Grand Apron and sees some sort of building and when he looks he literally sees the Destron Gas (it is blown into his eyes) after Goku destroyed the building he sees the machine and gets attacked by one of the monsters again, Goku easily beats him up and destroys the machine.
  +
Gohan went to the Desert in the far west and destroyed the machine and monster there, Piccolo went to the Poco Poco volcano were a monster planted land mines but Piccolo just flies above them and asks the monster to come up; when the monster jumps up, he lands on a land mine and everything explodes including the machine. Piccolo said he never thought there would be anyone more stupid than Mr. Satan.
  +
  +
Then Goku and his friends go to the Land of Ice to destroy the machine there, when they want to the destroy the permanent ice wall they get surrounded by all the monsters that jumped out of the ice. When most of them are beaten up Vegeta and Future Trunks came, Trunks also noted that those monsters attacked him when he was a child and interfered with his mothers study. Goku and the others start fighting and defeating the monsters again and also destroy the machine. Then Dende tells them that another machine appeared in the Western Capitel at the Tongari Tower.
  +
  +
Goku and his friends go there and Vegeta wants to destroy the machine but when he attacks the machine and the machine takes no damage, Frieza comes floating down and says that Vegeta can't destroy the machine because there is a barrier around it.
  +
Goku and his friends are surprised to see Frieza and even more surprised when Frieza raises his hand and Cooler, Turles and Lord Slug appear. Goku fights Cooler, Trunks fights Frieza, Gohan fights Turles, Piccolo fights Lord Slug and Vegeta fights nobody. They are easily defeated by Goku and his friends but when Goku tried to kill Cooler with a blast Cooler became a pink blob and returned to his real form (it looks a little like Buu's recovering). Goku also says that their power is greater than before. Then King Kai tells Goku that they are ghost warriors, when Goku says he know their true identity, then Goku and his friends easily kills them with some ki blasts.
  +
  +
Then Goku asked King Kai how to destroy the machine King Kai says they first have to attack the true being, Dr. Raichi the smartest Tuffle, King Kai says that Dr. Raichi is on the Dark Planet at the end of the universe. To go there they needed a jewel called Gekinum from island Bunbuku to build a space ship, the ship that they go with looks allot like the ship were Goku went to Planet Namek with, so this ship probably was build by Bulma or her father. When they see the Dark Planet they are attacked by pink thunder and have to find the Ring of Break-Evil and the Pearl of Break-Evil to come trough it, Goku and his friends managed to come trough the space storm and reach the Dark Planet with the help of King Kai he also informed Goku that Dr. Raichi is at the Control Center of the Evil Castle.
  +
  +
When they arrive at the front of the Evil Castle Goku is attacked by a robot. This robots tells Goku this is going to be Goku's graveyard, then Goku quickly defeats him by flying trough the robot that causes him to explode. After this Vegeta tells Goku that he may take care of the small fry but that Vegeta wants to kill Dr. Rachi. Then they come in the room where Dr. Raichi is and Dr. Raichi tells them he will take revenge, he also tells how he died in the war with the Saiyans. Before he died he made a machine which could amplify the energy of spite Hatchhyack, the ultimate creation. During the war on Planet Vegeta Dr. Raichi wanted to leave with Hatchhyack in a space ship but just when he wanted to leave he was killed by a Saiyan and kicked into his space ship and he and Hatchhyack left to the graveyards of space. On the Dark Planet Hatchhyack continued evolving into a living creature. He also says that he didn't create Frieza and the other ghost warriors but Hatchhyack did that. Goku on this reply's that that means that Dr. Raichi also is a ghost warrior. Then Goku and his friends start fighting Dr. Raichi, Dr. Raichi made a barrier around him self that they can't break. But when Goku and his friends go Super Saiyan they can break trough the barrier and Vegeta kills him with a blast. King Kai let Goku and his friends know that the last machine on earth that made the Destron Gas is gone. They think that they won but just like every Ghost Warrior Dr. Raichi can come back and so he did. Vegeta kills him again by putting a ki blast into his barrier, this time Dr. Raichi doesn't come back anymore.
  +
  +
Then the sky started changing colors and thunder apperas, King Kai says he never felt such a great ki, Goku asks King Kai what's going on and he says that Hatchhyack collected the energy from Dr. Rachi and is now so strong that he went over his limit. Hatchhyack gets Vegeta down with one punch and then does the same with Goku and the others, when Vegeta fires a Final Flash at Hatchhyack is does nothing to him, Hatchhyack gets everyone down with one ki blast. Then Goku says that Hatchhyack's power may be greater then Broly's. Then Goku noticed that Hatchhyack has to load 15 seconds before a strong attack, knowing this Goku is able to dodge most of his attacks. Then when Gohan got three Senzu Beans from Piccolo and gave them to Trunk, Vegeta and Goku then Goku fires a Super Kamehameha at Hatchhyack on the 13th second, Vegeta, Trunks and Gohan also shoot beams with Goku at Hatchhyack after this the whole planet is about to explode and Goku teleports everybody back to earth. On earth the dying woods are restored and now living on their fullest.
  +
By now Chi-chi is getting angry because Goku and Gohan still didn't come for dinner.
  +
  +
* Note: because it is a game you can get different endings; one ending is that Goku makes a Spirit Bomb to destroy Hatchhyack; another ending is where Hatchhyack transforms; another one is were Hatchhyack grows really big (like Piccolo did in the 22th tournament and what Lord Slug did); and yet another one is where Hatchhyack multiplies.

Ascended Super Saiyan
  +
After having witnessed Vegeta and Trunks emerging from the Hyperbolic Time Chamber (Room of Spirit and Time), Goku concludes that surpassing the normal Super Saiyan form may be more possibly than initially suspected, and enters the room himself to train himself and Gohan. After teaching Gohan to become a Super Saiyan, Goku is able to achieve this form alongside the further extreme of the form known as Ultra Super Saiyan. However, although this new powerup would not take as much of a heavy hit on his speed as the successor would, he decides that staying transformed like this demands far too much ki to be spent, and so decides that the regular Super Saiyan form is the best suited for combat, and makes a plan for him and Gohan to master it before they leave the chamber. As a result, after under 20 hours spent in the room (Vegeta and Trunks had spent a whole day each, and would spend another prior to the Cell Games), he and Gohan emerge as Full Power Super Saiyans. As a result of this and the new discovery of the most powerful Super Saiyan state at the time, Super Saiyan 2, this form is never used by Goku again, and Vegeta and Trunks soon follow.

Ultra Super Saiyan
  +

  +
Like the Ascended Super Saiyan form, Goku achieves this form in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber while training with Gohan. Although apparently stronger than Cell in this state, Goku told Gohan he could not defeat him because Cell was much faster, because "all the power in the world would do no good if you can't even hit the guy." Instead of persevering harder to simply increase power output, Goku decides that simply mastering the Super Saiyan form to suppress its downsides and make it a natural state is the best way to fight and gain power. This form is never used after its inital unlocking along with Ascended Super Saiyan, as a result.

After realizing the weaknesses inherent to the higher grades of Super Saiyan, Goku concluded that mastery over the base form would be more advantageous and went on to improve his endurance in that form, thus achieving this state.

  +
Although it is unknown when exactly Goku achieved this state of Super Saiyan, it is assumed Goku achieved this transformation in the Other World as he could put unlimited energy into his transformation. It was first seen when fighting Majin Vegeta's own Super Saiyan 2 form in their epic battle during the Buu saga, Goku transforms into this state before showing the Super Saiyan 3 transformation to Majin Buu and Babidi, and again in an anime filler where he begins to fight Kid Buu. In Dragon Ball GT, Goku can be seen briefly transforming into a Super Saiyan 2 while deflecting an attack by General Rilldo, and before he transforms into a during his second fight with Super Baby Vegeta. He also uses the form during the 12th and 13th movies.

Super Saiyan 3
  +
Super Saiyan 3

  +
Goku achieved this level in Other World as he could put unlimited energy into his transformation. Goku is first seen using this transformation against Majin Buu during the Majin Buu Saga. Once in this form, Goku was able to easily overpower Majin Buu in his first form and fight more than evenly with Kid Buu despite a heavy ki drain taking its toll on him. It is said by Vegeta and Goku himself that if Goku had been using the Super Saiyan 3 at its maximum potential, he would have been able to defeat Kid Buu. However, the transformation is extremely draining in terms of energy, as it cut Goku's time in half or lower. He is also unable to regather his energy whilst in a living body, making it impractical to use it out of the Other World.

Goku achieved this form in Dragon Ball GT after Elder Kai helped Goku to grow back his tail which allowed him to once again transform into a Great Ape. When he looked at the earth in the Baby Saga, he took this form and then later transformed into Super Saiyan 4.

Super Saiyan 4

  +
This form is achieved by Goku after achieving thestate and being calmed by Pan.The overwhelming power of this transformation is apparently great enough to overcome Goku's transformation into a child by Red Shenron. The spell is only dispersed during the transformation, however. In addition to him being turned back into an adult temporarily, Goku's overall appearance changes yet again. His tail is easily visible, the hair is longer than when in his normal state (not nearly as long as a Super Saiyan 3, though), his eyes become lined (much like Vegeta's did when he was a Majin in the Majin Buu Saga), his eye color is now golden yellow, and fur covers almost all of his body from head to toe. As a Super Saiyan 4, Goku is able to easily surpass all but the most powerful enemies in the final parts of Dragon Ball GT. But at the end of the last episode of Dragonball GT his tail disappears again making him unable to transform ever again in this state.
  +
  +
* Note: When Goku goes Super Saiyan 4, his clothes change compared with his childhood garb, including his size and his shirt part is removed by the transformation leaving him only with clothes beyond the waist.

Vegito
  +
Vegito
  +
Vegito is the product of a Potara Fusion between Vegeta and Goku with unrivaled power. Vegito is the most powerful being in Dragon Ball Z and he was created as a desperate plan by Elder Kai to stop the powerful Super Buu. It has been theorized that Vegito could easily attain the form of Super Saiyan 2 as well as Super Saiyan 3. However, this wasn't necessary to finish his task of killing Buu, as his Super Saiyan 1 state alone berthed enough in battle that he single-handedly pummeled the strongest incarnation of Buu without blithely without even needing to use his fists or any effort. Given a tail, Vegito would have the oppurtunity to become a Super Saiyan 4 or even possibly one step further. It was obvious he had the physical power to maintain such feats, but he only appeared for a short time before his strategy to deliberately be absorbed into Buu's body (whilst keeping a barrier on to avoid being assimilated into his being) resulted in his diffusion, after which Vegeta crushed his earring, vowing to never fuse with Goku again regardless of the circumstances. Goku follows suit reluctantly, and as a result, despite Old Kai's offer for the two to merge into Vegito again and take care of Kid Buu in a flash, the two decide to fight alone, and Vegito is never again seen.
  +
  +
Goku's relaxation, and Vegeta's strategic mind enabled Vegito to be quite an intelligent fighter without being overcome by arrogance as Vegeta alone would be but possessing the ruthlessness to kill Super Buu that Goku would lack. In addition, Vegito also possesses the immense power and speed of both Goku and Vegeta, as well as the tactics and skill of both. He is very similar to Gogeta, who is another fusion of Goku and Vegeta.

Gogeta
  +
Gogeta
  +

  +
Gogeta is one of the most formidable characters introduced in the series. Like Vegito, Gogeta was an act of desperation, though this one was to stop the powerful demon, Janemba, rather than Majin Buu. Gogeta easily outclassed Janemba, and the Demon was quickly disposed of in seconds. He derives his strategic battle tactics and skill from Vegeta, and his massive power and energy potential from Goku. However, due to his extraordinary power, the fusion will only last for 10 minutes, as opposed to the usual 30 minutes, though this has been proven ample time to defeat any foe many times over.

Gokule is the fusion of Goku and Mr. Satan formed by the Potara earrings. He only appeared in Goku's imagination and as a playable character in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2. After Goku returns to life and Earth, he finds Gohan to be the only remaining strong fighter to fuse with. But when Goku threw the Potara earring to Gohan, Gohan dropped it and when he finally found it he was absorbed by Buu. As the only two beings that were still alive are Hercule and Dende, he imaged what the fusion would look like and which of the two would be better. He chose Hercule, because Hercule had more fighting experience and might make Goku a little stronger. In addition, fusing with Dende would make the Dragonballs of Earth disappear. Just at the moment Goku said that Hercule should catch the earring and put it on his left ear, Vegeta appeared and Goku used Instant Transmission to find Vegeta and fuse, forming Vegito. This being the case, Gokule was only a hypothetical character in the anime, and is only seen as Goku's mental image of what the fusion would look like.

*In the original Japanese anime, Goku is voiced by the same seiyu (Masako Nozawa) throughout the series' run. Additionally, Nozawa voices every biological male relative of Goku, with the exception of Raditz. In the American dub, he has been played by seven actors, four as a child and three as an adult due to the several cast changes and re-dubbings of the original Dragon Ball series. In the Filipino dub, he was played by one actor. Goku is voiced by Jefferson Utanes in the Tagalog, Hiligaynon and Cebuano dubs.

Goku will be the main protagonist in the upcoming live-action movie Dragonball Evolution directed by James Wong. The character will be portrayed by actor Justin Chatwin.
  +
  +
Chatwin will not wear a wig as it was felt his hair already resembled Goku's. In the movie he will carry out his grandfathers wishes and seek out Master Roshi for training and he will attempt to collect all the Dragon Balls before Piccolo. Along the way he will befriend Yamcha and Bulma.
  +
  +
Justin Chatwin quotes "First of all, it's an honor to play Goku, because he is a very important and epic character. He is always seeing the positive side of things, does good things, and always tries to help and take care of the weak, not only pursuing his power. He is a dependable and loving man as well as a boy. So I like Goku. In preparation for the role, of course I read the original manga (all of it), in addition, I read [Journey to the West] a little, because Dragonball is based on [Journey to the West]. And during the break time of shooting, I got into Goku's character, telling jokes with other cast in search of the real communication which can be used in acting. This is the most interesting movie for me. Because I have never fought with anyone though, I trained martial arts and acrobat, and then we shot it. That's fun as well as challenging. Fighting with Eriko (Tamura), she punched me in the face, actually she intended to hit lightly, but... it was a clean hit (laugh) She said "I'm sorry!" and apologized to me, but thanks to her, we could shoot very powerful action scene. Through this work, I think I could learn a lot of things."

In video games, Goku has appeared in virtually every Dragon Ball licensed electronic game to date. He has also been featured in various crossover games. He appeared the Famicom games Famicom Jump: Hero Retsuden and Famicon Jump II: Saikyō no Shichinin, including the DS games Jump Super Stars and Jump Ultimate Stars. In 2006, he is featured in the Dragon Ball Z/One Piece/Naruto crossover game Battle Stadium D.O.N. In December 2007, Goku, along with Naruto Uzumaki and Monkey D. Luffy, would make guest appearances in avatar form in the MMORPG Second Life to promote "Jump Festa".

Goku was among a number of Dragon Ball characters to appear in the Dragon Ball Z "Terebikko" game Atsumare! Gokū Wārudo. This game was packaged as a VHS tape and a telephone peripheral used to input commands to Goku and friends when requested, telling a feature-length story involving time travel leading up to the Cell Games. Like the anime, Toei Animation was responsible for the footage, and as well each seiyū reprised the role of their characters.

In popular culture
Goku has often been deemed a positive role model for children throughout Japan. In June 1988, Goku and other Dragon Ball characters were featured in two PSA shorts. The first short was entitled "The Goku Traffic Safety" (悟空の交通安全, Gokū no Kōtsū Anzen?) where Goku is taught the importance of obeying traffic safety by others. The second was called "The Goku Fire Fighting Regiment" (悟空の消防隊, Gokū no Shōbō-tai?) where he teaches two children the importance of fire safety; this short is notable for featuring Goku as a volunteer fire-fighter.

Goku has made guest appearances in various Japanese television shows and manga. He is a recurring character in another series by Toriyama, Dr. Slump. In 1990, Goku (in anime form) made a surprise appearance on "Yamada Kasute Nai Wink" (やまだかつてないWink, "Yamada Kasute Nai Wink"?). Here he uses the Dragon Balls to help J-Pop star and hostess Kuniko Yamada gain his abilities including the ability to execute a Kamehameha, which she playfully uses on him. In 2006, Goku, Vegeta, and Frieza would make a surprise appearance in a special issue of Kochikame. Here Ryotsu Kankichi travels to Namek and issues Frieza a citation for parking his ship illegally. He would also meet Goku and Vegeta along the way. In 2005, Goku appears in the Toriyama parody manga Neko Majin Z where he is the sensei of the main character Z. He with the other Dragon Ball characters would team up with the cast of One Piece in a crossover manga titled Cross Epoch. Here Goku is traveling nomad who meets up with Luffy and together fights the "Pilappaggy Villains Union" a gang featuring Emperor Pilaf and Buggy the Clown.
  +
  +
Goku can also be considered a regular commodity for Fuji TV. In 2003 Goku would appear in the interactive feature entitled Kyutai Panic Adventure! (球体パニックアドベンチャー!, Kyūtai Panikku Adobenchā!?, Orb Panic Adventure!) which was featured exclusively at the Fuji TV headquarters. Here Frieza attacks tourist by blasting the orb section free it from the rest of the Fuji TV building followed by a canon attack Arlong and his gang. It features teamups of Goku, Luffy, and Astro Boy. This would be followed up with the 2004 Kyūtai Panic Adventure Returns! (球体パニックアドベンチャーリターンズ!, Kyūtai Panikku Adobenchā Ritānzu!?, Orb Panic Adventure Returns!). Here the evil Enel appears and attack the head quarter's location the aqua city of Odaiba. It features team ups with Goku, Luffy, and KochiKame's Ryotsu Kankichi. The feature is also known for Goku and Luffy's tag-team attack on Enel which fans have dubbed as the "Gom Gom Kamehameha".

Goku's appearance as a commentator at the 2007 "Nippon Ijin Taishō."On April 7, 2007 Goku along with Fuji TV announcer Masaharu Miyake would be commentators to the anime segment in Nippon Ijin Taishō (日本偉人大賞, Japan Great Man Awards?). The segment featured a special Tenkaichi Budokai tournament that was to decide who was the greatest person in Japanese history. The fighters were Benkei, Himiko, Prince Shotoku, and Amakusa Shiro. During the intermission, Goku managed to plugged the then soon be released copies of R2 releases of the Dragon Ball DVDs.

Goku has often been the subject of various parodies over the years. On an episode of Operation! Takeshi Castle which is currently known as in the US as MXC had an episode called family day. In that episode, the hosts Beat Takeshi and Sonomanma Higashi were dressed as popular anime characters one was Kid Goku and the other was Doremon. In the MXC dub of that episode, when asked who about his Goku costume, the host replied "Who me, I'm dressed as a crack head". The Shonen Jump's "Gag Special 2005" issue released on December 1, 2004 featured a Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo one-shot Dragon Ball parody manga. The manga was a humorous retelling of the battle between Goku and Vegeta in the Saiyan Saga. Jelly Jiggler was Goku and Don Patch was Vegeta. In the anime episode "Fire It Up! Abenobashi Hong Kong Combat Shopping Arcade" of Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, character Sasshi Imamiya goes Super Saiyan much like Goku and fires a Kamehameha.

Trivia
  +
*Goku is viewed by many fans and organizations as the Japanese equivalent of Superman, the world famous comic book superhero created by DC Comics. There are also many similarities between Goku and Superman. Both have similar origins (sent to another planet, home worlds destroyed, found by a nice elderly person who raised him as his own) and powers (super strength, super speed, flight, nigh-invulnerability) and both characters have died and been resurrected. In the 133rd edition (September 2002) of Wizard Magazine, a hypothetical Superman vs. Goku match up was published. Goku won the fight quite easily, not even needing to use Super Saiyan. This became a target of criticism, since the writer of the article used incorrect information about the characters. Later that year, Wizard did a tally at the Toronto Fan Expo and New York Comicon on who would win. Over 80% of all people said Superman defeats Goku, but there are many factors to be considered and it is uncertain. Most importantly, the characters were designed for two totally different universes, and what is "powerful" for DC comics is different than what is "powerful" for Dragon Ball Z. Power in general is difficult to measure in the Dragon Ball story line. As far as many of Goku's abilities go when compared to Superman, it is unclear to show how strong Goku is because of his lack of consistency in his feats which demonstrate his great power. DC and Marvel actually already have problems with their differing 'power levels', and often ignore some factors to equalize things whenever they cross over.
  +
* The Dragon Ball universe began as a loose adaptation of the classic Chinese legend, Journey to the West, with Goku being a parody of Sun Wukong the Monkey King. Similarities between the two include Goku's prone for mischief as a child (due to his innocence), possession of Nyoibo (Sun Wukong staff that can fill the entire Universe), and Flying Nimbus (the magical cloud the 'Great Sage' rode on).
  +
* Goku has been the inspiration for many characters, including Monkey D. Luffy from the One Piece series, Naruto Uzumaki from the Naruto series and also Zatch Bell from the Zatch Bell series.
  +
* Goku has died two times in the Dragon Ball series, dying once by Piccolo's Special Beam Canon in their fight with Raditz and during the fight with Cell to prevent the Earth from being destroyed by transporting both himself and Cell to King Kai's Planet right before Cell self-destrcuted.
  +
* Despite his tremendous strength and bravery, Goku has an anime-exclusive fear of needles, saying he'd rather get sick than get a shot; this fear is amplified in GT as he refused to even go into a hospital. Also in the anime, it is often teased that Goku is scared of his wife's temper (as joked by Master Roshi upon Goku's refusal to come back to Earth after the Frieza Saga "He's scared of the one thing that's stronger than a Super Saiyan- his wife!").
  +
* In Japan, there is a short movie that feature One Piece and Dragon Ball Z joining forces to take down Eneru who tried to destroy Japan. Both Goku and Luffy team up to put an end to his evil.
  +
*Goku is officially listed by Akira Toriyama to be 5 feet 7 inches tall (Japanese sites list him at 5 feet 9 inches).
  +
*Goku's life span, should last for about 1,000 years. The Old Kai said in the manga before giving Goku his life that he only had about 1,000 years left in him anyway.
  +
*On the Portuguese adaptation of the series, Goku is often called Son Goku, since, by itself, the name, "Goku", resembles a censored Portuguese word.
  +
*Although he is the main protagonist, at some points in the series, Goku is surpassed in strength by Gohan, Vegeta, Piccolo and several others.
  +
*Goku's original name, Kakarot is a pun on "carrot". Likewise, all pure-blood Saiyans that appear in the series are named using puns on various vegetables. This is ironic, since, in Dragon Ball, when fighting against Monster Carrot, he said he hates carrots.
  +
*A Goku doll can be seen in Trunks' crib.
  +
*Goku is the only Saiyan capable of achieving every canon transformation of Super Saiyan, in addition to the anime-exclusive Super Saiyan 4 and the non-canon False Super Saiyan transformations, apart from Legendary Super Saiyan.
  +
* In the Namek Saga, Goku mentioned that he gave Dr. Briefs the spaceship in which he arrived on Earth so that he could build a ship to travel to Namek. However, (in anime filler) Piccolo destroyed Goku's ship when it projected an image of the moon that caused Gohan to transform into a Great Ape.
  +
*Despite not being very smart in early Dragon Ball, he actually does know how to read. This is shown when he and Krillin are being trained by Master Roshi and Goku must read aloud. Goku, however, claimed that he never even owned a book in Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan.
  +
*In the Pokemon anime series the character Morrison is voiced by Goku's voice actors, Masako Nozawa in the japanese dub and Sean Schemell in the English dub.
  +
*Goku can be considered the 2nd strongest in Dragon Ball Z, canon-wise, only behind Vegito. Including non-canon characters from only Dragon Ball Z, he is the 4th with Vegito, Gogeta, and Janemba taking 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively.

Goku (孫 悟空, Son Gokū; ; ; ) is a character in the Dragon Ball metaseries created by Akira Toriyama and is the main protagonist in the Dragon Ball universe. Sun Wukong's noted possessions are a magical staff and a flying cloud, just like Goku has in the Dragon Ball series.

Sun Wukong and Goku

Akira Toriyama's "Dragon Ball" at first directly parodies this series, but quickly departs from it after the first saga. It then develops more into a martial arts series, instead of it heavily focusing on fantasy stories like in the beginning.

Overview

Son-goku

Goku's various appearances through out the Dragon Ball series.

Biography

Early Life

Babygoku

Goku as a baby being sent to Earth minutes before Frieza came to destroy Planet Vegeta.

From a young age, Goku developed the impression that his birth parents abandoned him in the mountains as a baby, leaving him for Grandpa Gohan to discover.[1]

Goku as he first appears in Dragon Ball

Goku is introduced in the Dragon Ball manga and anime at the age of 12[2] (initially he claims to be 14,[1] but it is later clarified during the Tournament Saga that this is because Goku had trouble counting), as a young boy living in obscurity on Mount Paozu.

Goku owns the Power Pole and later the Flying Nimbus when he meets Master Roshi and Turtle.

File:Dragonball-Episode008 354.jpg

Goku's first usage of the Kamehameha Wave after seeing Master Roshi perform it.

He is seemingly normal except for his ignorance of the world (which is demonstrated numerous times often in humorous ways like when he first met Bulma he destroyed her car thinking it was a monster), his great strength, and his tail. In the end, Oolong is the first to speculate that Goku is not an Earthling, raising the question of whether he is "some kinda space alien."[3]

After the quest finishes, Master Roshi agrees to train Goku, but only if he finds him a pretty girl. Another wannabe student named Krillin assists Goku, and they finally return with Launch. After hard work, the two develop into two of the most powerful fighters on Earth.

Goku and Raditz are killed by Piccolo's Special Beam Cannon.

After Goku and Gohan finished their training, they improved their endurance by maintaining their Super Saiyan state for ten days straight. Full-Power Super Saiyan Goku battles Perfect Cell.

He teleports them both to King Kai's Planet where he is killed by the explosion Cell caused. He motivates Gohan from beyond to help fuel Gohan's Kamehameha wave against the reconstructed Super Perfect Cell, which successfully obliterates him. After Cell's defeat Goku insists that he should stay dead because all he does is attract bad guys and decided it is safer for Earth.

Super Saiyan 2 Goku fights Majin Vegeta.

Although Goku and Majin Vegeta are perfectly matched, fighting each other at the Super Saiyan 2 level, Goku ends the fight when he knows that Majin Buu has been released and pleads with Vegeta to help him defeat Majin Buu. In a false show of agreement, Vegeta knocks Goku out from behind while he is getting a Senzu Bean out of a bag. Vegeta then eats the only Senzu Bean and flies off to face Majin Buu alone.

Upon awakening, Goku could sense neither Vegeta nor Gohan anywhere and comes to the conclusion that they are dead. He heads to Kami's Lookout and is healed by Dende, who confirms that Vegeta sacrificed himself in an attempt to destroy Majin Buu. After transporting everyone to the Lookout he tells the bad news to them. With the little time he has left on Earth, he decides to teach Trunks and Goten the art of Fusion he learned while in Other World so they may form one being to stand a chance against Majin Buu.

SSJ3 Goku vs Buu

Super Saiyan 3 Goku dominates Majin Buu.

When Majin Buu is about to cause more destruction, Goku decides to interrupt him while allowing Trunks to head into West City and retrieve the Dragon Radar before it is destroyed along with everything else by Majin Buu. He tells Majin Buu that in two days he will have a strong opponent to fight. Then Goku shows him and everyone (via Babidi's telepathy) the incredible power of the new Super Saiyan 3 form.

Once Goku has returned to Other World, he learns that his son, Gohan, is not dead, but in fact training with the Supreme Kai on the Kai Planet teleporting there only to just miss having his head removed by Gohan practicing with The Z Sword. Gohan has been training with the legendary Z Sword and to test its strength, the Supreme Kai summons a block of the densest metal in the universe as testing material. Goku throws the cube at Gohan, expecting the Z Sword to slice the block in half. Instead the sword snaps in half and from it emerges Elder Kai. He tells them that he will fully unlock Gohan's potential in a ritual.

Vegito, the result of the Potara Fusion between Goku and Vegeta.

Super Buu then transformed back to his original form - Kid Buu.

The final confrontation with Kid Buu.

Outside, Goku rescues Hercule and Dende, but fails in saving Gohan, Goten, Trunks, and Piccolo before the newly transformed Kid Buu destroys the Earth in an extreme show of power. Kibito Kai teleports in and saves Vegeta, Goku, Dende, and Hercule by bringing them to the Kai Planet. After regenerating, Kid Buu sets out to find Goku and Vegeta.

When Kid Buu finds them, Goku fights him first. He fights as a Super Saiyan 3,

and evenly matches Kid Buu for a short time. However, Goku had failed to account for the strain that fighting in a living body would have on him, and soon becomes exhausted. He attempts to gather up his strength while Vegeta distracts Buu, but his Super Saiyan 3 transformation drains him of his energy reserves and he soon loses the ability to maintain the form. At Vegeta's suggestion, Goku begins gathering energy for a Spirit Bomb.

Th SuperSpiritBomb

Goku charges the Super Spirit Bomb to destroy Kid Buu.

Using King Kai's telepathy Vegeta speaks to the people of Earth and begs for everyone to donate power to Goku's Spirit Bomb. Everyone on New Namek and the Other World give energy for the Spirit Bomb and possibly many other planets as well. Meanwhile, Fat Buu trying to hold off Kid Buu falls in battle leaving a battered Vegeta to protect Goku while he forms the Spirit Bomb. Hercule finally convinces everyone on the newly regenerated Earth to give Goku all the energy he needs to destroy Kid Buu once and for all. With the contribution of power from Earth, Goku launches the Super Spirit Bomb. But as impossible as it seems Kid Buu actually stops the Spirit Bomb and slowly begins to push it back at Goku. Vegeta realizes Goku used the rest of his power to gather and form the bomb and has nothing left.

Gokuub

Goku takes Uub in as his student.

Using the last wish from the Namekian Dragon, Dende wishes for Goku's full power to be restored. With his power restored Goku powers up the Spirit Bomb even more and stops Kid Buu's forward progress. After several moments reflecting over the events that led to this moment, Goku makes one last wish to himself, that Kid Buu be reborn as a good being so they can fight again. With the blessing of Earth's residents, Goku destroys Kid Buu forever. With the passing of ten years Goku kept training despite the fact that Earth was at peace, forcing Goten to join in. During the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament, Goku battles Majin Buu's reincarnation, Uub. After a short yet intense battle, Goku takes Uub to train him to one day help in being the protector of the planet, although he later tells Uub that after the training, he desires to fight him again. Then they fly off in the distanace and that is the end of dragon ball z

Goku in his prime in Dragon Ball GT

In Dragon Ball GT, Goku has finished training Uub, and they have just finished testing their abilities against one another in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Soon after, an accidental wish by Emperor Pilaf transforms Goku back into a child. The wish was made on the Black Star Dragon Balls. As a result, Goku must travel the galaxy and return them to Earth to prevent the planet from exploding from the negative energy created by the wish.

On their way back to the ship Trunks drops the Dragon Radar and it is swallowed by the small robot T-2006 nicknamed Giru who says that he can't give the radar back to them because it is already integrated into his system.

Pan trunks and goku028

Goku, Pan and Trunks search for the Dragon Ball around the Universe.

Meanwhile Goku notices the ship being dragged away by Don Kee's men. He tries to use Instant Transmission to teleport them to the ship but after two failed attempts realizes that he can't use it in his small body. They are forced to travel to Don Kee's palace on foot to recover their ship. Pan decides that they will use a stealth operation to recover the ship and would only result to fighting as a last resort.

Just as he goes to get the ball the mysterious Para brothers arrive and take it.

Goku then jumps in the ship with Pan and Trunks and they chase after the Para brothers. The brothers trick them onto the asteroid, Beehay, inhabited by huge bloodthirsty worm-like creatures called Mouma. The Para brothers escape and fly to the planet Luud. They go to Cardinal Mutchy Mutchy, who tells them that they have failed and that Goku has another Dragon Ball on his ship that they failed to get and they must go retrieve it. After multiple tries Goku finally succeeds and destroyed Luud freeing all of the people including Pan who is turned back to normal. Goku then takes back his Dragon Ball and they leave the planet.

His opponent apparently wins by tickling Goku while he is talking to Vegeta, resulting in Goku falling out of the ring. Goku leaves for Hell, where he meets Dr. Myu, and Dr. Gero, who leave, making Goku very frustrated with no way out, until two of his most fierce enemies of the past drop by, Cell and Frieza. Goku manages to out duel both of them in his normal state. Realizing Goku's power, Cell uses a technique not seen in Dragon Ball Z. He forces out his tail even in his perfect state and absorbs Goku. Once absorbed, Super Perfect Cell powers up with extreme, radical lightning and he states that he has gained all of Goku's power and has become the strongest fighter in the universe which may be true. But this only lasts for about ten seconds since Goku's finds his way out of Cell's body. After a fight between Goku, Cell and Frieza, they show Goku a new technique that they learned in Hell: creating a tornado type spin throwing Goku down to the deepest part of Hell. While there, a strange, old lady demonstrates various tortures which evidently ends by freezing Goku in a block of ice.

Meanwhile, Cell and Frieza wait to use a finishing move on Goku. Goku's end seems to have arrived until everyone realizes that the finishing move does not work on the living. Despite being frozen, Goku manages to hear their conversation. In his retaliation, he breaks free, attempts the freezing technique on Cell and Frieza, and successfully freezes and shatters them.

Piccolo contacts King Yemma and asks him to transport him to Goku. Believing the plan is ludicrous, King Yemma refuses, leaving Piccolo to destroy significant portions of Heaven as a means to convince him. King Yemma, eventually, follows through with Piccolo's idea and transports him directly to Goku where he, with Dende's help, transfer their energy to Goku so as to allow him to escape. Successfully escaping, Goku immediately leaves for the battlefield.

Goku charges up his Universal Spirit Bomb to destroy Omega Shenron.

When the dragon, Shenron, is summoned to revive those killed by Super 17, the Dragon Balls crack, and a different, cigar-smoking dragon appears in his place. This Black Smoke Shenron promptly splits into seven Shadow Dragons, each with a cracked Dragon Ball in its body. Goku and his companions fight valiantly to defeat these new dragons.

Goku leaves with Shenron.

However, after six of the seven are defeated, the One-Star Dragon, Syn Shenron, absorbs the other Dragon Balls into himself, forming Omega Shenron. Goku defeats him after the most difficult battle of his life, including a fusion with Vegeta to form the strongest fighter ever, Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta, that does not succeed in putting the One-Star Dragon down permanently. After being presumably killed by Omega's Minus Energy Power Ball, Goku asks the people of the planet Earth and from all over the Universe to send him his energy to create a Universal Spirit Bomb which is successful in finally destroying the Shadow Dragon.

Last scene

Goku, a hundred years later, in the very last scene of the Dragon Ball series.

The people of Earth witness this and finally realize Goku is a hero. Afterwards, the real Shenron appears once again, saying that no more wishes will be granted for a long time. After convincing Shenron to grant one last wish (repairing the damage done during the Super 17 and Shadow Dragon sagas), Goku decides to accompany the dragon and train with him. Before leaving for 100 years, Goku tells Vegeta that the lives of everyone are now in his hands, passing the role of protector of the Earth and anyone in need of help, to Vegeta.

A century later, as an aged Pan watches the World Martial Arts Tournament, she catches a glimpse of a familiar face in the stands: her grandfather, Goku (now grown up once again, without his tail). When she tries to follow him, however, he disappears. Goku is then seen flying into the air grabbing onto his power pole and calls for the Flying Nimbus and flys off into the distance and yells "Till we meet again guys!"

Dragon Ball movies

Goku appears in all of the Dragon Ball movies:

Lord Slug

Lord Slug is the main antagonist only in DBZ Movie #4. He was a very old Namekian that had been traveling through space for a number of years after being banished from his home world for misusing his powers. Along with his crew of vicious fighters, he traveled from planet to planet wreaking chaos as he went.

An asteroid alert is wreaking havoc all over the planet as it is going to destroy the entire Earth. Goku and Krillin go to deflect the asteroid off course so it doesn't hit Earth. They have been told they can't destroy it because it is inhabited, and at the time they didn't know who inhabited it.

Goku along with his son Gohan and Piccolo squared off against Slug's team and managed to defeat them all. The final battle against Slug was left in the hands of Goku. The battle was not going well for Goku until he was discarded by Slug who drew his attention away to Piccolo.

Goku was able to take Slug on in an incredibly fierce battle. Slug possessed the ability to transform into a giant version of himself but thanks to Piccolo's quick thinking in using Slug's sensitive hearing against him, Slug was weakened by this.

The movie ends with Goku flying up into the clouds to deliver the final blow to Slug with a Spirit Bomb. The Bomb heads straight into the freezing generator, taking Slug with it and destroying him.

The final scene involves Master Roshi waking up from his nap which he started before the aliens landed and he wishes that something interesting would happen.

Goku is out of energy and lies on the ground and the others except Piccolo come to him, when they think they hear Piccolo under the rocks it appears it's Salza, but then Salza is killed with a Special Beam Cannon that only one person can generate and that is Piccolo.

Goku strangled by Cooler

Even in his Super Saiyan state, Goku couldn't inflict any damage to the Super Android 13

Supersaiyingokuspiritbomb

Goku powering up when he absorbed his Spirit Bomb

Goku starts fighting Android 13 again and now Vegeta takes Android 15 and Trunks takes Android 14, Goku, Vegeta and Trunks are getting beaten but then they go Super Saiyan and Vegeta and Trunks destroy their respective Androids. Now Goku was Super Saiyan but that only made him equal with Android 13.

 • Note: Goku absorbed the Spirit Bomb because at that time, he had not yet mastered the Super Saiyan form, meaning he was subject to the anger and ruthlessness that the transformation causes. Thus, he could not use the Spirit Bomb technique as his heart was not pure at that time.

They said they where brought there by a guy named Paragus who came to pick up Prince Vegeta because he wanted the Saiyans to be reborn. When Goku was in the castle of Paragus he met Paragus' son Broly who was very angry at Goku for some reason and Paragus had to control him. Later in the evening Goku was sleeping and Broly attacked Goku as a Super Saiyan. Broly was later held back by the control device of his father.

Goku after his victory

 • Note: Broly was nearly killed in this movie and he reappeared in the movie Broly: The Second Coming.

In this movie Goku was wished to Earth by Goten when he and Gohan were firing a Kamehameha at Broly but were losing. When Goku appeared he coached them and helped them with the Kamehameha. When they shot Broly into the sun Goku disappeared.

Bio-Broly

In this movie Goku made a brief appearance in the last part where he is eating and saying that he and Pikkon have to go to hell and calm Broly down because he is on a rampage.

Fusion Reborn

Goku movie12-2

Goku using the fusion dance with Vegeta

Gokusbox

Goku failing to open the music box

In this movie Goku tries to open a magic music box that he had gotten from Hoy but he can't open it, so they go and find the Dragonballs to summon Shenron. When Shenron opened the box Tapion came out. Because Tapion was freed the upper half of Hirudegarn was also freed, the lower half was already attacking the city but Gohan was working on stopping him.

Gokuasfarmer

Goku as a radish farmer

The History of Trunks

Future Goku dying from the heart disease.

In this special Goku is only seen dying of the heart disease.

Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans

In this special, Goku is training in front of his house when Chi-Chi screams that dinner is ready then Goku says he has the feeling it is going to be a good day, Gohan comes with the firewood and says that the wood is dying. Mr. Popo also comes and tells that the new Kami-sama (Dende) told him that a gas called Destron Gas which doesn't belong on earth is accumulating the earth, the Destron Gas destroys all the living cellular tissues.

File:Nokamehameha.jpg

Goku failed at making a Kamehameha

When they go outside they meet Piccolo and then are attacked by two monsters, Goku says that he doesn't have the time to play with them and goes Super Saiyan and tries to fade them away with a Kamehameha but he can't make a Kamehameha anymore and the same goes for Gohan and Piccolo, Mr. Popo tells them that the Destron Gas does this because it doesn't let you concentrate your Ki. Then Goku and his friends just kill them with some punches and kicks. Goku goes to the Grand Apron and sees some sort of building and when he looks he literally sees the Destron Gas (it is blown into his eyes) after Goku destroyed the building he sees the machine and gets attacked by one of the monsters again, Goku easily beats him up and destroys the machine. Satan.

GokuSurounded

Goku surrounded by the monsters

Then Goku and his friends go to the Land of Ice to destroy the machine there, when they want to the destroy the permanent ice wall they get surrounded by all the monsters that jumped out of the ice. When most of them are beaten up Vegeta and Future Trunks came, Trunks also noted that those monsters attacked him when he was a child and interfered with his mothers study. Goku and the others start fighting and defeating the monsters again and also destroy the machine. Then Dende tells them that another machine appeared in the Western Capitel at the Tongari Tower.

Goku and his friends go there and Vegeta wants to destroy the machine but when he attacks the machine and the machine takes no damage, Frieza comes floating down and says that Vegeta can't destroy the machine because there is a barrier around it.

By now Chi-chi is getting angry because Goku and Gohan still didn't come for dinner.

 • Note: because it is a game you can get different endings; one ending is that Goku makes a Spirit Bomb to destroy Hatchhyack; another ending is where Hatchhyack transforms; another one is were Hatchhyack grows really big (like Piccolo did in the 22th tournament and what Lord Slug did); and yet another one is where Hatchhyack multiplies.

During the fourth Dragon Ball Z movie, Lord Slug, Goku achieved this form in an attempt to defeat Lord Slug. Through rage of being beat down Goku unleashed a huge amount of aura and became this false like Super Saiyan which gave him more speed and strength for a couple of seconds. His looks are like kaio-ken except his eyes are white like Broly's and his hair stands up.

Goku uses his new power to defeat Frieza, the antagonist of the series at the time. Frieza had destroyed the Saiyans out of his fear of their growing power, and the idea of a possible "Super Saiyan". As a result of defeating Frieza, Goku avenges the Saiyan race, and the death of his best friend Krillin.

Ascended Super Saiyan

Main article: Ascended Super Saiyan After having witnessed Vegeta and Trunks emerging from the Hyperbolic Time Chamber (Room of Spirit and Time), Goku concludes that surpassing the normal Super Saiyan form may be more possibly than initially suspected, and enters the room himself to train himself and Gohan.

File:150-11.jpg

Goku as an Ultra Super Saiyan.

Super Saiyan 2

Main article: Super Saiyan 3

Golden Great Ape

Goku achieved this form in Dragon Ball GT after Elder Kai helped Goku to grow back his tail which allowed him to once again transform into a Great Ape. When he looked at the earth in the Baby Saga, he took this form and then later transformed into Super Saiyan 4.

state and being calmed by Pan.The overwhelming power of this transformation is apparently great enough to overcome Goku's transformation into a child by Red Shenron.

 • Note: When Goku goes Super Saiyan 4, his clothes change compared with his childhood garb, including his size and his shirt part is removed by the transformation leaving him only with clothes beyond the waist.

Fusions

Vegito

Main article: Vegito

Vegito-2

Vegito, the result of Potara Fusion between Goku and Vegeta.

Gogeta

Main article: Gogeta

200px-Gogeta photo

Gogeta, the Fusion Dance result of Goku and Vegeta

Special techniques

Main article: List of techniques used by Goku

Behind the scenes

 • In the original Japanese anime, Goku is voiced by the same seiyu (Masako Nozawa) throughout the series' run.
 • In the early Harmony Gold English Dragon Ball dub from the 1980's, he is known as Zero.

Appearances in other media

Live-action movie

Main article: Goku (Justin Chatwin)

GokuDBE

Goku being potrayed by Justin Chatwin in Dragon Ball Evolution.

Goku will be the main protagonist in the upcoming live-action movie Dragonball Evolution directed by James Wong. The character will be portrayed by actor Justin Chatwin.

Video games

Goku Times 2

Against Future Trunks' wishes, Goku interacts with his child self during a trip to the past in Dragon Ball Z: Atsumare! Gokū Wārudo.

We owe that to our teammates. Our families, Vegeta, our friends! Look, you've always talked about our Saiyan race, how we're the last of the mighty people. Well it's time we accept we're starting a new race; one that can be just as strong, just as proud, but not if we're caught up in so much of our old birth rights to see what we have right in front of us! Trivia

 • Goku is viewed by many fans and organizations as the Japanese equivalent of Superman, the world famous comic book superhero created by DC Comics.
 • The Dragon Ball universe began as a loose adaptation of the classic Chinese legend, Journey to the West, with Goku being a parody of Sun Wukong the Monkey King. Similarities between the two include Goku's prone for mischief as a child (due to his innocence), possession of Nyoibo (Sun Wukong staff that can fill the entire Universe), and Flying Nimbus (the magical cloud the 'Great Sage' rode on).
 • Goku has been the inspiration for many characters, including Monkey D. Luffy from the One Piece series, Naruto Uzumaki from the Naruto series and also Zatch Bell from the Zatch Bell series.
 • Goku has died two times in the Dragon Ball series, dying once by Piccolo's Special Beam Canon in their fight with Raditz and during the fight with Cell to prevent the Earth from being destroyed by transporting both himself and Cell to King Kai's Planet right before Cell self-destrcuted.
 • Despite his tremendous strength and bravery, Goku has an anime-exclusive fear of needles, saying he'd rather get sick than get a shot; this fear is amplified in GT as he refused to even go into a hospital. Also in the anime, it is often teased that Goku is scared of his wife's temper (as joked by Master Roshi upon Goku's refusal to come back to Earth after the Frieza Saga "He's scared of the one thing that's stronger than a Super Saiyan- his wife!").
 • In Japan, there is a short movie that feature One Piece and Dragon Ball Z joining forces to take down Eneru who tried to destroy Japan. Both Goku and Luffy team up to put an end to his evil.
 • Goku is officially listed by Akira Toriyama to be 5 feet 7 inches tall (Japanese sites list him at 5 feet 9 inches).
 • Goku's life span, should last for about 1,000 years. The Old Kai said in the manga before giving Goku his life that he only had about 1,000 years left in him anyway.
 • On the Portuguese adaptation of the series, Goku is often called Son Goku, since, by itself, the name, "Goku", resembles a censored Portuguese word.
 • Although he is the main protagonist, at some points in the series, Goku is surpassed in strength by Gohan, Vegeta, Piccolo and several others.
 • Goku's original name, Kakarot is a pun on "carrot". Likewise, all pure-blood Saiyans that appear in the series are named using puns on various vegetables. This is ironic, since, in Dragon Ball, when fighting against Monster Carrot, he said he hates carrots.
 • A Goku doll can be seen in Trunks' crib.
 • Goku is the only Saiyan capable of achieving every canon transformation of Super Saiyan, in addition to the anime-exclusive Super Saiyan 4 and the non-canon False Super Saiyan transformations, apart from Legendary Super Saiyan.
 • In the Namek Saga, Goku mentioned that he gave Dr. Briefs the spaceship in which he arrived on Earth so that he could build a ship to travel to Namek. However, (in anime filler) Piccolo destroyed Goku's ship when it projected an image of the moon that caused Gohan to transform into a Great Ape.
 • Despite not being very smart in early Dragon Ball, he actually does know how to read. This is shown when he and Krillin are being trained by Master Roshi and Goku must read aloud. Goku, however, claimed that he never even owned a book in Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan.
 • In the Pokemon anime series the character Morrison is voiced by Goku's voice actors, Masako Nozawa in the japanese dub and Sean Schemell in the English dub.
 • Goku can be considered the 2nd strongest in Dragon Ball Z, canon-wise, only behind Vegito. Including non-canon characters from only Dragon Ball Z, he is the 4th with Vegito, Gogeta, and Janemba taking 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively.
