"In order to protect those important to me, I need to get more and more powerful."
Son Gohan (孫悟飯 Son Gohan) is a half-breed Saiyan and one of the most prominent characters in the Dragon Ball series. He is the elder son of the series' primary protagonist Goku and his wife Chi-Chi, the older brother of Goten, the husband of Videl and father to Pan. He is named after Goku's adoptive grandfather, Gohan.
Unlike his father, Gohan lacks a passion for fighting (although, he does possess a strong power within him) and prefers to do so only when his loved ones are threatened. Nevertheless, Gohan fights alongside the Dragon Team in the defense of Earth for much of his life.
Gohan takes after his father mostly in appearance, including Goku's facial features, black eyes and even his spiky hair. At the same time, he has his mother's light peach complexion rather. Also taking after his father, Gohan inherited a Saiyan tail, which was long and prehensile with brown fur. It was removed and regrew a few times during his childhood until removed permanently by Vegeta in their first battle.
When first introduced as a young child, he had short and spikey but relatively well-kept hair. He wore a white sleeveless shirt and green pants with black boots with white lacing, this outfit was covered in a Hanfu-style top that was yellow with green sleeves and on the front his family name, 'Son', written in kanji within a large white circle with black lining. He also wore a red cap with the Four-Star Dragon Ball attached to the top. He later removes the Hanfu-style top to show his outfit when he is ready to train with Piccolo.
While training with Piccolo, after losing his previous outfit from transforming into a Great Ape, he wears an outfit similar to Goku's original, consisting of an orange gi and black belt with a black undershirt, blue wristbands, and black boots with yellow lasing. At the same time, he wore with the 'Ma' symbol (魔) and his hair grew out more into a mullet-style that reached his shoulders. By the fight against the Saiyans, Gohan grows noticeably more muscular for a child and dons a similar attire to the Namekian warriors, consisting of a purple gi with a red sash and armbands, bronze grass shoes, and a white collar around his neck. He also sported a white bandana. Gohan's hair has been cut short and has three thick fringes on his head. Before going to Namek with Krillin and Bulma, Gohan is initially seen wearing an outfit worn in private elementary school and later his Namekian outfit. During his battle against Frieza, Vegeta gave Gohan a Battle Armor, which consisted of a blue jumpsuit with white gloves and boots, and a white torso protection with yellow shoulder pads. During the Androids Saga, his hair grew even longer, reaching his thighs, and his Namekian outfit was modified to in now has long hair and retains the same outfit that he wore in the Saiyan Saga and the Frieza Saga, but now wears black kung-fu shoes and white shins. While training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, he wore a similar Battle Armor from Planet Namek, which lacked shoulder pads. After leaving the Time Chamber, he grows noticeably taller (roughly Krillin's height), and also quite muscularly developed for his age. He reverts to Piccolo's clothing for the Cell Games, with the addition of Piccolo's white cape and weighted shoulder pads. During this time his hair is spiky much like Goku's. Gohan's outfit in Bojack Unbound which looks exactly like the one Goku wore in the Androids Saga and Majin Buu Saga.
As a young adult, he becomes similar in height to his father. His hair is much shorter and stands on end in a spiky formation, with a single bang hanging over the right side of his forehead. Having slacked off in training, he looks noticeably skinnier and leaner in frame, though still respectfully muscular. Also similar to his father, Gohan is noted as being very attractive by many females such as Erasa and Angela. He alternates between a school uniform, his Great Saiyaman costume, and a blue gi similar to the Piccolo clothing. While wearing his blue gi, his obi, wrist bands and shin guards are red but in Dragon Ball Z: Broly - Second Coming, the shin guards are reverted to white. During the Buu Saga, he wears Kai clothing given to him by Kibito. In his fight against Super Buu and reuniting with his father and Vegeta after they defeated Kid Buu, Gohan wears an outfit identical to his father. At the party for the celebration of the defeat of Kid Buu, he wears a blue suit as part of his formal clothing.
As an adult in the end of Dragon Ball Z, Gohan's hair would be similar to how it was in the Buu Arc minus the bang which resembles Yamcha's hairstyle from the Androids Saga. In Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, Gohan's wears glasses, a blue vest with a long white undershirt, and brown slacks with black shoes.
In Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’/Dragon Ball Super, having since retired from fighting completely and slacked off in his training, Gohan became very scrawny in built. His hair is also smoother and much flatter. Gohan tends to wear formal clothing as he studies to become a professor consisting of a grey collar shirt with a blue vest and red pants. On Frieza's arrival on Earth, he wears a green tracksuit because he forgot where his gi was. After he resumes training with Piccolo, Gohan slicks up his hair again to have spiky ends.
By the time of the Tournament of Power, Gohan's training with Piccolo reconditioned his body, becoming basically as muscular as Goku. When battling, he would slick his hair back up again and removes his glasses. Also for the tournament, in the anime Gohan dons the same style gi he wore against Super Buu, while in the manga he dons a gi virtually identical to what he wore at the Cell Games, minus the white cape and shoulder pads.
In Dragon Ball GT, he retains his hairstyle from the end of Dragon Ball Z with the only difference being it is a little longer and is usually seen dressed as like a professor or a businessman, in a suit and a tie. He also wears eyeglasses, even though he shows no sign of actually needing them, due to the fact that he does not need them to fight. It is possible, however, that these are reading glasses of some kind, as opposed to general corrective glasses. When facing Syn Shenron, Gohan wears a gi resembling that of the ones Goku used to wear throughout Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super.
In the Assault on the Hell Gate Saga, GT Gohan wears a gi identical to Piccolo's, though without the cape and turban.
As a child, Gohan is a shy and studious intellectual child who lacks the Saiyan fighting spirit, so he had to utilize his incredible half-breed Saiyan potential and emotional reserves to protect those he loves, becoming one of the most powerful Z Fighters. As an adult, he achieves his dream career of becoming a great scholar.
Being only half-Saiyan, Gohan is unusual in his values and personality compared to most full-Saiyans. These unique values and personality separate him from pure Saiyans; as powerful as he is, he does not like fighting much. However, when he is forced to fight, he shows special interest in protecting his family and friends. Like his father, Gohan has a truly pure and gentle heart, apart from having the typical Saiyan appetite and will eat anything.
Though he claims he does not share the love of fighting Goku has, Gohan does indeed love martial arts and adventures. It is also clearly obvious that he enjoys his superhuman powers, and he greatly enjoys using them to be a superhero, though he dislikes receiving the fame and attention that comes with it and prefers to keep a low profile, which is why he created the Great Saiyaman persona, in order to keep his identity a secret. This is even more evident when he didn't acknowledge Cell's defeat at his hands to the public after Mr. Satan falsely took credibility for it. During the Zeno Expo, he admitted that his Saiyan half was getting excited from the challenge shown by Top of Universe 11, demonstrating that even though he despises senseless violence, he actually does enjoy fighting as a sport. It is possible that he prefers not to fight due to the many gruesome and painful fights he experienced in the past, and because of these battles, Gohan has negative emotions associated with fighting.
However, even though he is naturally smart, humble and kind, Gohan himself has been a victim of his own power in the past, whenever Gohan gets a gigantic power boost, he becomes arrogant and cocky, essentially becoming drunk in his power, often acknowledging and even enjoying his superiority over his opponents, as he did when he first became a Super Saiyan 2 against Cell, and later in his life when he achieved his Ultimate form, and fought Super Buu. This fatal flaw of his warrior-personality might be an actual side-effect of his Saiyan-heritage, since Saiyans such as Vegeta, or Nappa, have been known to act similarly when drunk in their own power while fighting. This had to lead him to the brink of defeat on several occasions and has later had to deal with the consequences of his actions, such as the death of his father at the hands of Cell, or Super Buu absorbing him and endangering the entire universe in the process. However, thanks to Piccolo, Gohan works on overcoming this flaw of his, to not let his own superior power blind him on the battlefield ever again.
Besides concerning himself with his family (and his studies), Gohan has a strong attachment with his mentor: his father's former archrival Piccolo. After the death of Goku, Piccolo chose to train Gohan as he sensed the boy's potential power, which would be harnessed to help defend the Earth from the attack of the Saiyans. At first, the relationship with Piccolo is a frightening one, but after just one year, Piccolo admits his change because of the friendship he develops with Gohan and even sacrifices himself to save the boy from Nappa. Gohan has even openly come to think of Piccolo as a surrogate uncle to him. Krillin also has an influence on Gohan, as almost an uncle/nephew relationship, mainly because Krillin is Goku's closest friend. While Gohan does care about his mother, he like his father has a fear of her temper to the point in Dragon Ball Super he informs his mother that Goku planned to leave to train under Whis, stating that he had to tell her for his own safety, though fortunately Chi-Chi surprisingly calmed down after Goku left with Whis. However, Gohan will defy his mother if it is important as he tells his mother off after she refuses to let him go to Namek to revive Piccolo using the Namekian Dragon Balls, due to feeling responsible for Piccolo's death at the hands of Nappa.
After the battle with Cell, Gohan gives up martial arts to focus on his studies and only resumed his training at the behest of his little brother Goten. Although he acknowledged he had fallen out of practice and lacked the fighting expertise of his father and Vegeta, Gohan gave all that he had as he fought Majin Buu and was eager to kill Buu for murdering his family and friends. In the years to come, he continued to train on-and-off while having a career and being a family man. He marries Videl, with whom he fell in love despite her being Mr. Satan's daughter, and has a daughter named Pan. Gohan proves to be a loving husband and doting father who takes delight in lavishing his daughter with attention and affection.
Unlike his father, Gohan demonstrates interest in girls such as Videl though he is generally shy when it comes to girls around his own age and is respectful more towards girls and women due to his mother's influence (as Chi-Chi ensured that he and his brother had better manners and education than their father). However he can be at times just as oblivious as his father when it comes to romance as he is good natured personality as shown when he suggested Videl cut her hair for practical reasons though she assumed it was because he preferred girls with short hair and angrily told him off when she learned his true reasons as she herself was slowly developing a crush on him at the time and mistook his obliviousness as a sign that he wasn't interested, though she later followed his advice much to his utter confusion. However he too slowly developed feelings for Videl after spending time with her and was deeply angered when she was brutalized by Spopovich to the point he rage caused him to involuntarily transform into a Super Saiyan causing him to lose his bandana, while doing everything he could to restrain himself from interrupting the match. He was even determined to avenge her by defeating Spopovich in the tournament though this ultimately did not occur and Spopovich was killed by Babidi. He also hid his role in Cell's defeat from her out of respect for her and her father, though later came clean during the conflict with Majin Buu though she herself was actually relieved as she had always secretly questioned the validity of her father's claims and only made her feelings for Gohan stronger as she recognized he was truly an awesome guy as he was humble about his achievement and never sought to profit from his defeat of Cell as he could have easily refuted Mr. Satan's claims had he wanted to by simply defeating him in a show of power.
Gohan's feelings for her where so strong that during the Fusion Saga he angrily opposed his father suggestion of using her to bribe the perverted Old Kai to unlock his potential. In fact his angry reaction to his father's questionable yet well meaning suggestion is not unlike Chi-Chi's temper, indicating that he inherited his temper from her which due to his Saiyan genetics likely contributed to his berserker-like rage as a child (as Saiyans can increase strength through rage). However he is somewhat bashful about his feelings for Videl due to his shyness. In Xenoverse 2, while working as an Instructor with Videl his oblivious personality is still present despite his feelings for her (as they are from a time period after the Kid Buu Saga, though still in the early stages of their relationship) as he obliviously asks the Future Warrior to join them when Videl suggests they go to the movies unaware that she was subtly asking Gohan out on a date causing her to angrily uninvite him stating she and the warrior would go to the movies without him out of frustration (she however enlists the Future Warrior's assistance in learning what Gohan likes in an effort to impress him as her attempts have been frustrated by Gohan's well-meaning but pure-hearted obliviousness). However he and Videl managed to bond and grow closer even fighting crime together as the Saiya Squad with Videl even donning her own alter-ego Great Saiyaman 2 (Great Saiyawoman in the Funimation dub) and even developing a fondness for heroic posing despite finding it ridiculous at first, though in Xenoverse 2 it is implied that she reluctantly agreed to pose at Great Saiyaman's insistence and found that she actually enjoyed it which apparently increased their bond with one another. After his marriage to Videl, he became a devoted husband. He felt terrible when Videl was injured during Bulma's birthday due to his drunken overconfidence causing him to recklessly defect a bullet shot by Mai, though fortunately neither Videl or the unborn Pan were seriously hurt and Dende was on hand to heal the injury. Videl later revealed she was pregnant much to Gohan and their family's joy, with Gohan excited at becoming a father. An equally devoted father, though due to his job and family life he neglected his training which left him unprepared for Frieza's revenge.
After witnessing the death of Piccolo, Videl and Pan at the hands of Frieza before it was undone by Whis' Temporal Do-Over (as it was only undone and is still consider part of the official timeline as Whis' absence in an altered timeline in Xenoverse 2 resulted in Gohan dying with his father and everyone saved by Whis, when Frieza destroyed the Earth after Whis and Beerus had been lured away from Age 779 to Age 852 by Towa's trickery, only for it to be undone by the actions of Whis and the Future Warrior to restore the proper history), Gohan realizes that he must get much stronger in order to protect them. Because of this, he asks Piccolo to train him once again. His devotion to protecting his new family helped him regain his strength and he even returned to fighting crime as Great Saiyaman (though Videl remained retired from crime fighting as she was more devoted to being a supportive wife and mother to their baby girl). However while working as a stunt double for Barry Kahn for the Great Saiyaman film after Mr. Satan got him the job (allowing him to ensure the film portrayed his alter-ego accurately so to protect Great Saiyaman's image as a heroic crime fighter), his identity as Great Saiyaman was discovered by pop idol Cocoa Amaguri (after she overheard Gohan talking about it to Bulma) who blackmailed him to fly her around town and do a rehearsal with her (as she was portraying Great Saiyaman's fictional love interest and damsel in distress in the film) though the rehearsal was something that Barry Kahn forced her to do as he planned to blackmail Gohan (and unbeknownst to Cocoa ruin her career at the same time) though Cocoa tried her best to avoid the planned set up by changing the location of the rehearsal as she had developed a crush on Gohan after recognizing how devoted he was to his wife and daughter, though she innocently kissed him on the lips to thank him for his kindness and words of encouragement, unaware that Barry Kahn had secretly followed them and took a picture though Barry's plan was thwarted by Videl seeing through his show of concern in an attempt to woo her after providing her with the photo as evidence that Gohan was unfaithful (when in reality Cocoa had kissed him without warning). After Barry was possessed by Watagash, he kidnapped Pan causing Gohan as Great Saiyaman to become Super Great Saiyaman (basically Gohan transformed into a Super Saiyan while wearing his Great Saiyaman helmet) and defeat the Possessed Barry (who had turned into a monster due to his evil nature powering up Watagash) to protect his family from the possessed actor, managing to separating Barry from Watagash (who was arrested by Jaco as Watagash was a wanted fugitive), though Barry is later blackmailed by Cocoa to prevent him from revealing Gohan's secret identity to the world out of spite. Both Videl and Pan both had the faith Gohan would protect them showing they both know Gohan would do everything in his power to ensure their safety.
By the time of the Tournament of Power, Gohan has become considerably more powerful than before, although it is unclear as to how much more powerful he has become as Piccolo has stated that Gohan's power is truly bottomless and that he can continue to further strengthen himself to new heights. However, despite reawakening his power, Piccolo points out his tendency to become arrogant and let his guard down could prove disastrous for Team Universe 7 during the tournament so Piccolo tries to discipline Gohan in order to break this dangerous habit. After witnessing his son's newfound power, fighting instincts and keeping in mind his keen intellect, Goku makes the decision to step aside from the role of Team Captain and appoints Gohan as the Captain of Team Universe 7 after their fight, stating Gohan's power is similar to his own and his intelligence makes him ideal for the role. Ultimately, Gohan’s goal to grow stronger has taken a unique path compared to other Saiyans. While desiring to surpass his father, he wishes to do so by his own terms and methods, choosing to focus on empowering his natural and unamplified power rather than depend on any Super Saiyan transformations, viewing this as relying more on his Earthling-side than that of Saiyan. During the tournament, Gohan proved to be a very capable leader coming up with numerous strategies on the spot to defeat troublesome opponents. Even Frieza, who detests all Saiyans, actually compliments Gohan's leadership skills, calling him a worthy leader.
In Dragon Ball Online, it is shown that as a scholar Gohan became devoted to studying and researching the nature of ki and begins researching the martial arts of the past, organizing them in his book Groundbreaking Science in Age 804. The book became extremely popular and introduced the concept of ki to the general population of Earth sparking a renewed interest in the martial arts and fighting. One of the articles, "Katchin Can Be Cut!", had an immense influence on his brother and Trunks leading them to study swordsmanship which allowed them to develop their natural potential via intense training and as adults Goten and Trunks founded the Kikoukenjutsu Sword School. The renewed interest in the martial arts also had to lead to the founding of the New Turtle School by Krillin and New Crane School by Tien Shinhan. As Goku and Vegeta had left Earth to settle their rivalry in Age 801 after Goku realized his death was imminent, it was left to the remaining Z Fighters Gohan, Goten, Pan, Trunks, Krillin, and Tien to defend the Earth after the remnants of the Frieza Force invaded Earth following the death of Gohan's father-in-law Mr. Satan whom the Guard Troops that lead the army assumed had defeated Frieza. Like he had in the past, Gohan resorted to using his old alter-ego Great Saiyaman to defend the Earth and managed to convince Pan, Goten, Trunks, Krillin, and Tien to disguise themselves with Saiyaman-like suits as well to hide their identities while combating the Frieza Force, however their ki-based fighting style became a hot topic and global interest in ki escalated. As a result, Gohan in his role as a scholar and Z Fighter ended up sparking a martial arts revolution on Earth and secretly continued to defend Earth with his family and friends as he had done for most of his life.
Gohan was born in May 18 of Age 757, about a year after Goku and Chi-Chi married following the conclusion of the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament. As a newborn, he went on for a time without a name until Goku's grandfather's name was mentioned, which Gohan liked, as opposed to the name his mother chose (Einstein). His early childhood was a pampered one, unlike his father's. His life was relatively well-balanced with a loving family and a nice home. Gohan was well-adjusted and intelligent, but unlike his father as a child, he lacked any affection for fighting and was easily scared at a level that most normal children would be. Goku gave Gohan the four star Dragon Ball and put it into a hat for him to honor his grandpa. Once, Goku and Chi-Chi were walking through a meadow with Gohan on a stroller, but the stroller was accidentally released, causing them to chase after it. Gohan was then sent flying out of the stroller, but his latent powers' brief awakening not only allowed him to survive crashing into a tree, but also plowing a hole through the trunk, amazing Goku at the hidden power of Gohan.
Dragon Ball Z
Despite Goku's protests, Chi-Chi home-schools Gohan to be a scholar until he is four, before Goku takes him to Kame House to introduce him to Master Roshi, Bulma and Krillin. At this time, he is shown as a shy, but very smart boy who also has a tail like Goku once had before it was removed. He is also very sensitive and appears cowardly at some times. While Goku reunites and talks with his old friends, Gohan rides on Turtle's back, and plays Rock-Paper-Scissors with a crab, enjoying himself. After Goku's brother, Raditz, explains his Saiyan origins and attacks Goku with ease, he kidnaps Gohan while the latter rushed to his father's aid, putting Goku at a stalemate, that if he does not kill 100 humans by the next day, Raditz will eliminate his nephew.
"You stop hurting... MY DADDY!!!"
Gohan soon gets locked up in Raditz's space pod, because Raditz cannot stand his constant crying. It is during this time that Raditz discovers that Gohan is potentially far stronger than Goku himself. During the battle between Goku, Raditz, and Piccolo, Gohan becomes angry and breaks free of the space pod he is being held captive in when he spots Raditz torturing Goku by repeatedly kicking one of Goku's broken ribs. He delivers a devastating blow to Raditz, giving Goku and Piccolo time to kill the evil Saiyan, though Goku dies in the process as well.
After the battle with Raditz, Piccolo, having seen Gohan's power first hand, decides to take Gohan out training in the wilderness. He leaves Gohan alone to survive against dinosaurs and other dangers for six months, though during this time he watches Gohan carefully. During the first six nights, while complaining about the sour flavor of the apples Piccolo has given him, Gohan accidentally looks at a full moon and transforms into a Great Ape. Piccolo destroys the moon, causing Gohan to revert into his normal form before Gohan destroys too much of the land. Piccolo yanks his tail off, then reconstitutes his clothing, giving him a uniform similar to Goku's. The difference: it bears the Demon symbol, to symbolize him being Piccolo's student. For the rest of the year, Piccolo shows no mercy as he teaches Gohan how to fight. Soon, Gohan's bright and cheerful nature makes Piccolo protective over the young boy. As the boy grows on Piccolo, the two of them have a few conversations about Piccolo's past and why he did the things he did and Gohan tells Piccolo he thinks he is not as bad as everyone has told him.
Eventually, the time comes for the Z Fighters to take on the remaining two Saiyans, Vegeta and Nappa. Piccolo senses the Saiyans making their approach and tells Gohan to be ready, when he suddenly senses a third ki from another direction. They think it is another Saiyan but soon find out that it is Krillin who joins them to fight the Saiyans. The Saiyans find them and before the fight starts, they decide to test their Saibamen against the Z Fighters. Soon Yamcha, Tien Shinhan, and Chiaotzu join them in the fight. While Yamcha and one Saibaman fight, Gohan cannot keep up with their speed through his eyes alone, so Piccolo orders Gohan to concentrate and find them using Ki Sense, which Gohan is eventually able to master quickly. When Nappa begins to fight after Yamcha is killed and the six Saibamen are destroyed, Gohan is able to sometimes control his fear but becomes frightened and hides behind rocks because at times his age catches up with him. This prevents him from being very effective in the battle, except for short intervals, such as a point when he single-handedly kicks Nappa through a boulder. During one part of the battle, Piccolo hatches a plan for Gohan to blast Nappa after Piccolo has kicked him towards Krillin, and Krillin then will kick Nappa towards Gohan for the attack. The first two thirds of the plan work accordingly, but when it is Gohan's turn, Gohan cowers behind more boulders, botching the plan, resulting in Piccolo calling him a worthless coward. When Vegeta gives the group three hours for Goku to arrive, Piccolo loses all hope in Gohan, and after some bickering, he orders Gohan to go home. However, Gohan refuses and even realizes Nappa would not let him go away.
When the fight continues after Goku fails to arrive on time, Gohan regains his confidence and does his best to amend for his previous cowardice. Piccolo hatches another plan for Gohan to attack Nappa after Krillin distracts him and Piccolo grabs his tail. Though Gohan quickly goes on the assault, the plan fails when Nappa is shown to have overcome his tail's weakness. Eventually, when Nappa fires a lethal energy blast at Gohan, Piccolo throws himself in front of Gohan and takes the impact. Gohan watches his mentor slowly die, and while Piccolo confesses his true bond with Gohan, Gohan's emotions once again take over, starting to cry in extreme anger. Once Piccolo slowly passes on, Gohan in turn fires a powerful Masenko at Nappa, which does only minimal damage to his arm. With that last Masenko consuming all the energy he had left, Gohan decides to give up and meet his fate, despite Krillin's protests for him to run. He is almost squashed by Nappa, but is saved by the Flying Nimbus when the resurrected Goku finally arrives to the battle. After eating a Senzu Bean with Krillin, he watches Goku overpower Nappa. When Vegeta kills Nappa, Goku tells Gohan to let him battle Vegeta alone, not wanting Gohan to get hurt again.
Later on, after Vegeta turns into a Great Ape using a Power Ball and injures Goku, Gohan returns to the battle. After Yajirobe chops off Vegeta's tail, making him transform back, Gohan fights Vegeta alone while Krillin and a broken Goku prepare to fire a Spirit Bomb, the last resort. Krillin fires the Spirit Bomb, but misses. Gohan bounces it back, hitting Vegeta, but not killing him. Gohan himself transforms into a Great Ape after looking at Vegeta's Power Ball. He defeats Vegeta by landing on him after Vegeta cuts his tail with a Destructo Disc. Afterwards, Goku lets Vegeta go, hoping to one day face him again.
Main articles: Namek Saga, Captain Ginyu Saga, Frieza Saga, and Garlic Jr. Saga After recovering from his injuries in West City hospital, Wukong Hospital, Gohan chose to go to the planet Namek with Krillin and Bulma to gather the Namekian Dragon Balls to bring back his friends back to life, because Piccolo's death caused Kami's death too, which caused the Earth's Dragon Balls to turn to stone. Gohan was on a personal mission to wish back Piccolo, and went so far as to wear a copy of Piccolo's dōgi to honor him.
After their long trip, with a few sidetracks, they finally make it to Namek, where they find out Vegeta has also come seeking the Dragon Balls, along with his former far more powerful boss, Frieza. While scouting the planet with Krillin, Gohan spots Frieza and his minions, Zarbon and Dodoria, tormenting Namekian villagers. When Gohan sees Dodoria, one of Frieza's top henchmen, attack a little Namekian child named Dende, he goes out and attacks him. Afterwards, Dodoria chases Gohan, Krillin and Dende, but they eventually lose him and Vegeta kills Dodoria.
Dende leads Gohan and Krillin to Grand Elder Guru, the ruler of the Namekians, where he unlocks both of their hidden potential. Later, Gohan steals a Dragon Ball that Vegeta has hid in a lake for himself, and even tricks Vegeta who runs into him on his way back from retrieving the ball. Vegeta figures this out eventually and becomes enraged, but the arrival of the Ginyu Force makes Vegeta have to form an alliance with Gohan and Krillin in order to get all the Dragon Balls and put up a fight against Frieza's feared Special Forces. Unfortunately, when they gather all of the Dragon Balls, they are ambushed by the Ginyu Force. The weakest of them, Guldo, is to take on Krillin and Gohan, but fails as Vegeta steps in and decapitates him with his hand.
Then, when Vegeta is fighting a losing battle against Recoome, Krillin and Gohan step in and fight, but it is still not enough. Gohan is on the brink of death until Goku shows up with Senzu Beans. Goku takes on the rest of them, but has his body switched by Captain Ginyu. With Goku completely weak in Captain Ginyu's body, Gohan has to try to fight Captain Ginyu in his father's body (although he is initially reluctant to do so, despite knowing it is not his dad, as he still feels he is injuring his dad by doing so). Captain Ginyu is unable to fully figure out Goku's powers and after a short fight with Gohan, Krillin, and Goku in Ginyu's body, Vegeta kills Jeice and ultimately defeats Ginyu. After Captain Ginyu ends up in a frog's body, Gohan and the others gather the Namekian Dragon Balls and wish for Piccolo to be brought back to life on Namek.
Shortly after, Frieza ambushes them, making them stall for Piccolo to come. In the Z Fighters' battle against Frieza's second form, Krillin is injured by the tyrant and is sent into the depths of the water below. Gohan rushes to save his friend from drowning, but Frieza stops him. Getting angry, Gohan attacks Frieza with a barrage of punches and kicks followed by the Gekiretsu Madan (a massive wave of energy blasts), following up with a Masendan to finish the job, that would bring the tyrant to his knees. When Piccolo (now greatly powered up after fusing with the Namekian hero Nail) arrives on the battle field, he fights an even battle against Frieza while Gohan and the others watch in amazement.
However, Frieza transforms into his third transformation and gains the upper hand against Piccolo. Seeing this, Gohan becomes enraged and attacks Frieza with the Full Power Masenko, hindering Frieza for a few minutes. Eventually, Frieza manages to deflect the attack back at Gohan, who is saved by Piccolo when he destroys the attack with a Ki Blast. Frieza then transforms into his final form, and as his first act, kills Dende, who had been healing the Z Fighters. Frieza then tries to kill Gohan with a Death Beam, but Vegeta saves the young Saiyan by kicking him out of the way of the blast. Gohan, Krillin, and Piccolo watch in horror as Vegeta gets brutally beaten by Frieza until Goku arrives. In the end, Vegeta meets his end at the hands of Frieza, who kills him with a Death Beam.
Gohan and the others are left on the sidelines while Goku fights an even battle against Frieza. However, things turn bad when Frieza powers up to 50% of his power and gains the upper hand against Goku, who desperately attempts to use the Spirit Bomb. In order to buy Goku some time, Gohan and Krillin lend their energy to Piccolo so he can stall Frieza enough for Goku to complete his Large Spirit Bomb. When Frieza prepares to kill Piccolo, Gohan and Krillin summon up the last of their energy and distract the tyrant with a surprise attack, saving the Namekian's life. Goku then fires his completed Spirit Bomb. It proves successful and Frieza is plummeted into the depths of the Spirit Bomb, heavily injuring him.
Believing the tyrant to be dead, the heroes relax and prepare to go back home to Earth, until Frieza appears on top of a boulder and reveals to be alive. Frieza mortally wounds Piccolo (in the anime, Frieza attempted to fire a Death Beam at Goku, but Piccolo pushed him out of the way and got hit by the laser instead, whereas in manga, Frieza intended to fire the attack at Piccolo), overwhelming Gohan with horror and grief at the presumed death of his mentor and friend. Next, Frieza kills Krillin, by telekinetically blowing him up into pieces, which enrages Goku and allows him to transform into a Super Saiyan. He assertively orders Gohan to take Piccolo and retrieve Bulma and take them to the ship that he traveled in and use it to head back to Earth. Reluctantly obeying his father's wishes, Gohan leaves the battle field with the unconscious Piccolo and manages to retrieve Bulma.
"You killed my Dad. And Krillin too. And the others... Because of you, they're gone! I'm going to make you pay for what you did to them!!!"
Later, when he senses that his father is supposedly dead, Gohan returns to the fight to stall Frieza before Namek explodes. However, despite his best efforts, he is unable to stall Frieza as the tyrant taunts him and he is not fighting, in addition to Frieza deducing the real reason Gohan is attempting to fight him. However, Gohan then senses that his father is still alive and powers up. Next, Gohan attacks Frieza with a barrage of punches and kicks, while expressing anger that Frieza harmed Goku, knocking him to the ground and finally blasting him with a Super Masenko. Unfortunately, Frieza appears unaffected by the attack and powers up to full power again, saying that Gohan is a true Saiyan and that is why Frieza must kill him. However, before Frieza can kill Gohan, Goku rises up from the ocean below and tells Gohan to get off Namek. Gohan flies away from the fight and encourages his father to win. As Gohan is flying back to the spaceship, he and the others are later transported to Earth by Porunga while Goku is left finishing the battle with Frieza on the dying planet Namek.
After Goku wins the battle, but is caught in planet Namek's explosion, Gohan and the others mourn the Saiyan warrior's apparent death. Months later, they are allowed to use the Namekian Dragon Balls to wish Goku back to life. However, they are shocked after the Eternal Dragon Porunga refuses the wish that Goku be brought back to life, but everyone rejoices once the Dragon explains that Goku did not die from Namek's explosion. During this time of peace, everyone awaits the arrival of Goku, and Gohan goes back to his studies while Piccolo watches over him and his mother.
Only in the anime, while everyone on Earth is waiting for Goku to come back, Garlic Jr. escapes from the Dead Zone, and enslaves most of humanity with the Black Water Mist. Gohan, who is unaffected due to hiding in a cave with his dragon friend Icarus, is forced to travel to the lookout point to save his mother and friends, together with Piccolo, Krillin, and his new girlfriend Maron, who is left at Korin Tower.
He has to do battle with Garlic Jr.'s henchmen, the Spice Boys, and after killing them, he has to face his friends: Krillin and Piccolo. Luckily, it turns out that these two are only pretending to be evil so they can free Kami and Mr. Popo. While outmatched at first, after a reunion with his friends, Gohan eventually manages to overcome and send Garlic Jr. back to the Dead Zone by blowing up the Makyo Star that is powering the villain. This would be the first time Gohan has saved the world without his father's help.
A year after (two years later in Funimation dub) Goku defeated Frieza on Namek, Gohan and Chi-Chi still wait for Goku's safe return to Earth. However, things turn bad when the Z Fighters sense Frieza heading towards Earth, along with another powerful being: his father, King Cold. Gohan and the Z Fighters regroup where Frieza and King Cold's spaceship is landing, at Northern Wastelands, but without Goku's help, the Earth appears to be doomed. However, when Frieza and King Cold land on Earth, they are confronted by a mysterious youth, who transforms into a Super Saiyan and easily destroys Frieza and King Cold along with their henchmen.
After the fight, he tells the others to follow him to when and where Goku will be arriving. After waiting two hours (three in the manga), Goku arrives on Earth and he and the youth have a private talk. With the conversation over, the youth departs to his future, but promises to meet them again when the Androids arrive. During the next three years, Gohan trains hard with Goku and Piccolo to prepare for the Android threat.
"These guys are ruthless. What happened back in the city will happen everywhere. They'll start torching the whole planet if we walk away."
Three years later, the Z Fighters locate the Androids on an island nine miles southwest of South City. However, not wanting to fight in the city in fear of causing more damage after Gero had already destroyed half of the city, they fly to a wasteland so they can fight. Goku transforms into his Super Saiyan form and dominates Android 19, until the Saiyan contracts the heart virus Future Trunks warned him about three years prior, allowing Android 19 to gain the upper hand and steals some of Goku's energy. Goku, however, is saved by the arrival of Vegeta, who transforms into a Super Saiyan himself and easily destroys Android 19 while the Z Fighters watch in amazement.
With Android 19 destroyed, Android 20 becomes scared and retreats, with the Z Fighters in pursuit. During the search, Piccolo is suddenly ambushed by Android 20, who attempts to steal the Namekian's energy and use it against Vegeta. Luckily, Piccolo telepathically contacts Gohan and tells him to come help him. Gohan soon arrives and knocks Dr. Gero down to the ground, saving Piccolo's life as the Z Fighters gather around. Piccolo then fights Android 20 alone and dominates the android with the strength he achieved from the last three years of intense training, cutting off one of Gero's hands. Future Trunks then comes back from the future and arrives on the battle field with the Z Fighters, only to discover that these Androids are not the ones in his future timeline. However, Android 20 manages to escape and the Z Fighters search for him while Gohan flies Bulma, Trunks, and Yajirobe back home to Capsule Corporation. Dr. Gero makes it back to his lab and activates two of his more powerful creations, Android 17 and Android 18. However, the Androids rebel and kill Dr. Gero and proceeded to activate another android, Android 16, whose sole purpose is to kill Goku. The Z Fighters battle the new Androids, only to be badly beaten as the Androids fly away to find and kill Goku.
"But, if you could actually go back and destroy the Androids in the past, what would happen to the ones that are already here? In our present I mean. Would they all just, disappear or something? Or, would it be more like they, well, like they never existed?"
When the Z Fighters are in an airplane with a weakened Goku, flying away from the Androids, Gohan and Future Trunks leave and meet with Bulma to investigate an old time machine that was used to travel to the past. The time machine is covered in moss and has a large hole at the top. In there, they find a large egg shell split in half, but can not get any conclusions from it. Then, Gohan finds some thing unusual in the distance: the skin of a huge bug (later known as the android, Cell). Bulma takes the shell with her to do some more investigating.
After Goku is cured from the heart virus, he takes Gohan, Future Trunks, and Vegeta up at The Lookout, where they are shown by Mr. Popo a special room up at Kami's Lookout, known as the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, in preparation for a new threat: Cell. In the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Future Trunks and Vegeta both enter the room first for the whole day while Goku and Gohan wait and sense that Piccolo (now fused with Kami and returned to the original nameless Namekian) is fighting against the Androids. Gohan tries to go down to Earth and help Piccolo, but Goku does not let him go and explains he is not strong enough and will only get in Piccolo's way. Goku tells Gohan as soon as they get their training done, they will go down to Earth and help Piccolo.
"NO!!! I can't just sit here and do nothing, I'm going down there! Got it!? I'm done waiting!"
Later, when Piccolo was nearly killed by a powered-up Cell, who arrived on the battle field between Piccolo and Android 17, Goku and Gohan sense Piccolo's energy disappear. Believing his mentor to be dead, an enraged Gohan tries to go down to Earth, but is held and calmed down by Goku. Still angered, Gohan flies up into the air and tries to escape from the Lookout, but is punched down to the ground by Goku. As Mr. Popo rushes to help him, he explains to Gohan that Goku is hurting inside too and is even more angry than Gohan about Piccolo's near death. Gohan and Goku apologize to each other for their actions, and Goku promises that he will not let Piccolo's sacrifice be in vain.
"I've gotta be strong! Everyone's counting on me, I can't let them down! Like against the Saiyans... or the Ginyu Force, or Frieza. Whenever my friends needed me most I was always too weak or too scared to help them. I've been letting them down my whole life!"
After Cell absorbs Android 17 and achieved his Semi-Perfect form, he is about to set his sights on Android 18 when Tien Shinhan arrives and attacks Cell with his Neo Tri-Beam, allowing Android 18 and Android 16 (who was injured by Semi-Perfect Cell) to escape. Goku and Gohan sense Tien's energy decreasing and he finally collapses from exhaustion. Just before Semi-Perfect Cell can kill Tien, Goku uses Instant Transmission to appear on the battle field. He grabs the barely alive Tien and Piccolo and teleports back to the Lookout, where they are fully healed with a Senzu Bean. Piccolo explains that despite their best efforts against Semi-Perfect Cell, they proved useless.
At that moment, Mr. Popo interrupts and brings the group to the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, where Future Trunks and Vegeta emerge stronger than ever. They are given new Saiyan armor by Bulma (who by this time already arrived) and fly down to the Earth to confront Semi-Perfect Cell. While Vegeta and Future Trunks fight Semi-Perfect Cell, Goku and Gohan enter and train in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber while wearing some new Saiyan armor made by Bulma. In the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Gohan struggles to transform into a Super Saiyan. Goku informs him that to become a Super Saiyan, it must be triggered by anger and rage. Gohan realizes the only way to become a Super Saiyan is for his father to fight him at full power. Hesitantly, Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan and fires a powerful Kamehameha at Gohan. Gohan blocks the attack and thinks about all the other times he was not able to help his friends whenever they were in danger while his friends helped him out if he was in danger.
Thinking about this, Gohan becomes overwhelmed with rage, allowing him to transform into a Super Saiyan and fire the Kamehameha back at Goku, who dodges the attack and tells his son to focus his energy, making him return to his base form. Goku tells Gohan they can take a break and even gives his son a haircut. Later, Gohan again transforms into his Super Saiyan form and trains while Goku sits down and watches his son's training in his Super Saiyan form improve. Gohan gets tired and transforms back into his base form when Goku demonstrates the second and third grade forms (which are the forms that Vegeta and Future Trunks are using against Cell, who by this time had achieved his perfect form by absorbing Android 18).
Seeing this incredible strength and power, Gohan is sure Goku can beat Cell, but Goku says he can not. He explains that because his muscles are now bulky, they slow down his speed, which is obviously important in the fight with Cell. Goku tells Gohan that transforming into a Super Saiyan takes a great deal of energy, but they need all the Super Saiyan energy they can get. Goku comes up with a plan to transform into a Super Saiyan Full Power, so he tells Gohan to try and stay transformed as a Super Saiyan for the whole day when it starts to feel normal.
At some point during their training, Goku prepared to call it a day, but then Gohan then manages to surprise Goku by transforming into an unprecedented Super Saiyan form before collapsing from exhaustion. Although Gohan does not remember it due to the strain of this initial transformation, it ended up being the catalyst that caused Goku to realize that, should Cell achieve his perfect form, Gohan is the only one of the Z-Fighters, including Goku himself, who would stand any chance at defeating Cell in even that state.
With their training finally completed, Gohan and Goku emerge earlier than expected from the Hyperbolic Time Chamber as Super Saiyan Full Powers. As Goku and Gohan are eating food made by Mr. Popo (because they do not really know how to cook when they were in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber), Future Trunks, after being defeated by Perfect Cell along with his father Vegeta, tells them that Perfect Cell is hosting a tournament for the Earth's strongest warriors called the Cell Games, to which Goku thinks of it as an interesting challenge. While Goku wears his trademark orange and blue clothes for the tournament, Gohan asks Piccolo for a copy of his uniform, since he was his first mentor. Piccolo conjures up a uniform similar to his for Gohan, who happily appreciates the new outfit.
Goku pays Perfect Cell a visit using Instant Transmission, and after returning, he claims he is no match for the android. Piccolo suggests they can still go in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber for extra training. However, Goku declines and says that he and Gohan can train outside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, greatly surprising everyone. Goku and Gohan leave the Lookout, (after Goku and Gohan show Korin and Yajirobe their new power) and arrive at the Kame House to pick up Chi-Chi so they can go home. Gohan asks his father if they have a chance of beating Cell if they spend the next nine days resting and training outside. Goku laughs and says they do not have to worry about it now, since they have nine days to relax. Gohan and Goku go inside and meet everyone else (at one point, Oolong and Puar even say that Gohan has, "buffed up.") However, when Chi-Chi sees Goku and Gohan, she freaks out and exclaims that Gohan has become a hair-dyeing punk.
In a filler episode, Gohan flies to a village called Chazke Village to run a shopping errand for his mother. He meets Lime and Mr. Lao there, and later encounters one of his father's deadliest enemies in his childhood: Mercenary Tao, rebuilt as a cyborg. Taken over by panic and shock at discovering Gohan is Goku's son, Mercenary Tao flies away on a tree. Goku arrives and he and Gohan are given the groceries by Mr. Lao, who encourages them that they can defeat Cell. Gohan and Goku say their goodbyes to Mr. Lao and Lime and fly back home.
In another filler episode, Gohan has his 11th birthday and all of his other memories are revealed. One of his memories include Goku, Chi-Chi, and the Ox-King discussing a name for their newborn son. However, when they mention Grandpa Gohan, Goku's deceased adoptive grandfather, they discover the baby laughs at the name, "Gohan." Seeing as the baby likes the name, "Gohan", Goku, Chi-Chi, and Ox-King name the baby, "Gohan." In another flashback Goku, Chi-Chi, and Gohan are walking in the woods when they look up in a tree at a bird family. However, Goku accidentally lets go of Gohan's stroller, causing Gohan to zoom violently down the hill while Goku and Chi-Chi run for their lives after their crying son. The stroller jumps over a ravine and heads for a tree where it crashes and breaks. The crying Gohan is about to smash into the tree, but he stops crying and uses his hidden power to smash through the tree without injury. Goku catches Gohan on the other side of the tree and he laughs, ending the flashback.
Gohan, Goku, and Krillin return home, where they, along with Chi-Chi and Ox-King, celebrate Gohan's 11th birthday. Before he blows out the candles, Gohan makes a wish in his mind. He wishes he would have enough strength to defeat Cell so his family would live in peace. However, when Gohan blows out the candles, he accidentally ends up blowing the cake everywhere on everybody's face. Chi-Chi says a boy would get severely punished for trashing his birthday cake. However, Chi-Chi's mood changes to happy and she says he can not help it because he is Goku's son, to which everyone joyfully laughs.
"Look. I'm giving you the chance to end this without violence. I really don't want to kill you. Even if you are evil, you can still walk away. I'm not interested in fighting you just for the challenge, my Dad's the one who cares about that stuff..."
Finally, ten days have passed and the Z Fighters arrive at the Cell Games for the battle against Perfect Cell. Goku is the first Z Fighter to battle against Perfect Cell and matches the monster blow for blow. To everyone's surprise, Goku forfeits the battle against Perfect Cell after using the Instant Kamehameha which left him and Cell drained. Goku then chooses Gohan to fight Perfect Cell in his place. Gohan states Goku and Cell's battle was not hard to keep up with, leading to the conclusion that Gohan was possibly stronger than Goku, who was fighting at full power. Gohan powers up to the point where his power exceeds even Goku's and reluctantly fights Perfect Cell. As the battle occurs, Gohan does not have the same fighting spirit as his father nor does he have the desire to kill, thus allowing Perfect Cell to gain the upper hand. Gohan tells Cell that once he becomes enraged, his hidden power is unleashed, referring to when he attacked Raditz, when he was in training with Piccolo, and when he was fighting Frieza. Gohan did not wish to see this power unleashed, much to Perfect Cell's chagrin.
Believing he could see this hidden power, Perfect Cell began smacking Gohan around to get him angry. Gohan finally gets a little angry and kicks Perfect Cell in the face, giving him a bloody lip and fueling his desire to see Gohan's hidden power. When things start to get dangerous, Android 16 sneaks up behind Perfect Cell and gives him a bear hug, attempting to self-destruct and take the monster with him. However, Krillin reveals to Android 16 that Bulma and her father removed the self-destruct bomb, allowing Perfect Cell to break free and blast Android 16 to bits, much to the horror of the Z Fighters. However, the android's head is left still intact and rolls over to Mr. Satan and his gang, who were hiding and watching the fight.
"What are you so afraid of, Cell? Isn't this what you wanted? I warned you. I told you what would happen if you pushed me too far. But you didn't listen. You forced me to awaken my hidden power, and now that you've seen it, you're afraid... because you know that I'm going to destroy you."
Perfect Cell then creates seven Cell Juniors and has them attack the Z Fighters. Gohan watches in horror and becomes angry as his friends are mercilessly beaten by the Cell Jrs. Meanwhile, the head of Android 16 convinces Mr. Satan to throw his head to where Gohan and Perfect Cell are so that he may help Gohan. Now in Gohan's sight, Android 16 tells Gohan to not be afraid of releasing his anger and that it was okay to fight if he wants to protect the people and world he loved. Finally, 16 said to Gohan to drop his restraints and let it go because he has enough power and strength to defeat Perfect Cell. With Android 16's final words, Perfect Cell crushes Android 16's head, ending the peaceful android's life. Touched by Android 16's final words and enraged by the peaceful android's death, Gohan's rage reaches its limits and transforms him into a new level, Super Saiyan 2.
Now in his new anger-fueled state, Gohan says to Perfect Cell stating that he will never forget what he has done. He approaches the android and quickly snatches the Senzu Beans that Perfect Cell stole from Krillin. Gohan disappears as Cell tries to grab them back and appears in front of a Cell Jr., showing new amounts of speed. The Cell Jr. attempts to strike Gohan, only to be easily killed by the enraged young Saiyan. Gohan moves so fast that it appears that he has teleported to where Krillin is held captive by two of the Cell Jrs., something that Future Trunks realizes about Gohan increasing his strength and power without losing speed. Gohan rescues Krillin and kills another of the Cell Jrs. Seeing this new incredible power that Goku spoke of earlier, Perfect Cell orders all of the Cell Jrs. to take on Gohan all at once; however, Gohan easily kills all of Cell Jrs. without mercy, much to the amazement and shock of everyone, including Perfect Cell. After Gohan gives the stolen Senzu Beans to Future Trunks to heal the Z Fighters, he proceeds to challenge Perfect Cell.
As the Z Fighters are healed by the Senzu Beans and get to a safe distance, Gohan battles Perfect Cell and gains the upper hand against the android. Perfect Cell unleashes his maximum power and punches Gohan hard in the face. However, Gohan is barely fazed by Perfect Cell's blow and counterattacks with two powerful punches to his stomach and face, severely injuring the Android. Perfect Cell fires attacks used by some of the Z Fighters, including the Destructo Disc, Special Beam Cannon, and Scatter Shot at Gohan, who easily brushes through the attacks. Gohan tells Perfect Cell that he should not have pushed him and because of that, he is going to destroy him.
Perfect Cell flies up high into the air and fires a massive Kamehameha down at Gohan in an attempt to destroy the entire Earth. However, just as the huge energy beam is about to hit the Earth, Gohan counterattacks with a bigger and more powerful Kamehameha, overpowering Perfect Cell's Kamehameha and destroying the android's legs, left arm, and the two straight sections on top of his head. Goku yells for Gohan to finish off Cell before he regenerates, but Gohan, still enraged at Perfect Cell's actions, refuses and wants Cell to suffer before he kills him. Surprisingly, Gohan even cracks out a psychotic grin at Goku while Cell is regenerating while Goku continues telling him to finish Cell. As Goku predicted, the enraged Cell regenerates and transforms into his Power Weighted form but even with his enormous power, he is unable to hit Gohan, making the same mistake Future Trunks made ten days ago. After Gohan dodges Cell's punches, he delivered two powerful kicks to Perfect Cell's face and stomach, making him regurgitate Android 18 and transform back into his Semi-Perfect form.
In a fit of anger and desperation, Semi-Perfect Cell began a Self Destruction technique, planning to blow himself up along with the Earth. Gohan attempts to attack the self-destructing Semi-Perfect Cell, but the android replies that if he is hit, he will immediately explode. Hearing this, Gohan realizes that there is no way that he can save the Earth and blames himself for not finishing Cell off sooner. However, at the last second, Goku uses instant-transmission to transport in front of Semi-Perfect Cell. Goku tells Gohan how proud he is of his son for putting up a good fight and to look after Chi-Chi. After a heart-felt goodbye to his son, Goku transports Cell away from Earth to King Kai's Planet where Semi-Perfect Cell finally explodes, destroying the planet and killing Goku, King Kai, Bubbles, and Gregory in the process. Back on Earth, Gohan and the other Z Fighters mourn Goku's noble sacrifice. Realizing how cocky and arrogant he was, Gohan cries and blames himself for his father's death while Krillin tries to comfort him.
However, unknown to the Z Fighters, Cell survives the explosion, regenerating from a lone cell in his core. Doing this effectively raised his power higher due to the Saiyan genes he absorbed from Goku and Vegeta, and he also learned Goku's Instant Transmission technique, which he used to head back to Earth. As his first act of return, Super Perfect Cell kills Future Trunks with one blast in front of the shocked Z Fighters. Gohan was in fact pleased to see Super Perfect Cell had returned, hoping to defeat the android so he could avenge his father. Enraged by his son's death, Vegeta in a fit of fury and rage, transformed into to a Super Saiyan and attacked Super Perfect Cell with a powerful barrage of energy blasts. However, as the dust clears, Super Perfect Cell emerges from the blast, unharmed, and smacks Vegeta aside to the ground and fires a powerful blast at the Saiyan prince. Gohan jumps in front of the unconscious Vegeta and takes the full-force of Super Perfect Cell's attack, costing him the use of his left arm and most of his power drained.
Wanting to end the conflict, Super Perfect Cell prepares a massive Kamehameha to destroy Gohan, who loses all hope after having his left arm broken and seeing how much more powerful Super Perfect Cell is now. However, at that moment, Goku telepathically contacted Gohan with the help of King Kai and encouraged Gohan to believe in his power. When Gohan tells Goku it was all his fault that this happened, Goku reminds him that not only do things like this happen, but if anyone is to blame for it, it is Super Perfect Cell. With new found hope and confidence, Gohan prepares a one-handed Kamehameha with the assistance from Goku's spirit. With their attacks finally charged and ready, Gohan and Super Perfect Cell fire their Kamehameha attacks at each other, resulting in a huge Beam Struggle that knocks away everyone else.
During the Kamehameha duel between Gohan and Super Perfect Cell, Super Perfect Cell has the upper hand against Gohan. However, Gohan, still aided by his father in Other World, is able to charge more of his power into his Kamehameha, seemingly bringing the energy duel to a standstill. The Z Fighters, except for Vegeta, also help out Gohan by blasting Super Perfect Cell, who retaliates by knocking all of them away with his energy, rendering them unable to help Gohan. However, just as Super Perfect Cell is about to destroy Gohan, Vegeta, after regaining his confidence, aims at Super Perfect Cell's head with a Galick Blazer, distracting the android. Seeing this opportunity, Gohan (encouraged by Goku) unleashes all the rest of his power into his Kamehameha, completely destroying every cell in Super Perfect Cell's body, dispatching the android once and for all. Having successfully won, Gohan reverts to his normal state and collapses to the ground, breathing heavily and smiling as Goku in Other World expresses how proud he is of his son for finally defeating Super Perfect Cell and saving the world.
Following Super Perfect Cell's defeat, the Z Fighters and Gohan return to Dende's Lookout, where he is healed by Dende. With the newly recreated Dragon Balls, they summon Shenron and wish for all of Cell's victims to be revived. However, Goku does not come back and telepathically contacts the Z Fighters on the Lookout. Goku tells them not to revive him and explains that he seemed to attract evil villains that were after him, so the Earth would be safer if he was not there. He also said that Gohan had greatly surpassed him and if there were any other threats, Gohan would be there to defend the Earth. With the conversation over, Gohan and the Z Fighters say their goodbyes to Goku and to each other before leaving Kami's Lookout and going their separate ways, leaving the Earth safe once more.
Majin Buu Saga
"Guardian of the city, I am the one and only... Great Saiyaman!"
Seven years after the events of the Cell Games, Gohan lives at home with his mother and his seven-year-old brother named Goten, born just after the Cell Games. His training has taken a backseat to his studies and his strength has decreased overtime, although he can still compete with Goku and Vegeta, who have trained hard in those years. Chi-Chi decides Gohan needs to attend high school in order to pursue higher education, so she sends him to Orange Star High School in Satan City. On his first day in the city, he turns Super Saiyan (in order to conceal his identity) to stop a robbery, and by the time he arrives at Orange Star High tales of the newest hero, "Gold Fighter", have already spread (which name was actually given to him after two previous incidents while going to the school to take entrance exams). In class, he meets another crime-fighter and the most popular girl in school, Videl. She is the daughter of Mr. Satan, who got rich and famous for stealing Gohan's credit over the defeat of Cell. While at school, Gohan also had to be careful not to reveal his true power.
Videl is highly suspicious of Gohan and spies on him to see if he is really the Gold Fighter. Videl confronts Gohan several times to voice her suspicions, but Gohan nervously denies them. Gohan decides to use a disguise when fighting crime and goes to Bulma to make him a costume. He becomes the Great Saiyaman to hide his identity so that the media will not bother his family. However, while trying to convince Videl to let him return a stolen pterodactyl baby to its two pterodactyl parents, he accidentally reveals his identity to Videl, who then blackmails Gohan to compete against her in the newly revived World Martial Arts Tournament in exchange for her silence. Gohan, having no experience with kids his own age, especially girls, is helpless against the confident Videl, who makes him promise to teach her how to fly.
When Gohan tells Bulma about the tournament, Goku, listening in from the Other World, contacts them and tells them he'll compete too, using his one-day pass to the human world. Hearing this, Vegeta also decides to compete. To make it more interesting, and to give them a chance to meet Goku again, Gohan tells all his friends about the tournament, and they all decide to compete. While Gohan trains with Goten, he is shocked to see Goten transform into a Super Saiyan, breaking his record as the youngest Super Saiyan ever, worrying that if he does not train harder, Goten will surpass him.
When Videl shows up at Gohan's home to learn to fly, Gohan learns that she has no knowledge of energy, since her father believes it to be just a trick. Gohan begins training her from scratch, though she picks it up pretty quickly. During his training of Videl as well as his brother Goten, Videl learns more about Gohan and grows closer to him. Also when teaching Videl becomes a great flyer, Gohan had thought that Videl was really something special. Despite the relentless teasing from friends (such as Krillin), Videl and Gohan develop a sweet kind of relationship.
"Last chance for requests! Do you just want to see just a Super Saiyan? Or should I take it up to the next level!?"
As the Z Fighters arrive at the World Tournament, Goku, who had been in Other World training for the last seven years, arrives on Earth and after an emotional greeting by Gohan, meets his second son, Goten. As the tournament occurs, the Z Fighters easily brush through their matches. Later, however, when Videl fights Spopovich, she is nearly beaten to death by the large brute. Gohan watches in anger as his friend horribly suffers at the hands of the ruthless Spopovich. Finally, having seen enough, Gohan turns Super Saiyan and tries to save Videl from Spopovich, but before he can, Yamu interrupts and tells for Spopovich to finish the match because they have much more important things in the matter. Spopovich kicks Videl out of the ring and leaves with Yamu, but not before being told by the angry Gohan that he will win the next time they fight.
After rushing Videl to the hospital and giving her a Senzu Bean to heal, Gohan returned to the tournament and found himself set up to fight Kibito. In order for Shin and Kibito to find Babidi's spaceship, they are forced into tricking Gohan into turning into a Super Saiyan. However, Gohan states that there is a level beyond a Super Saiyan and transforms into his Super Saiyan 2 form, shocking the audience, while revealing that he was the mysterious Gold Fighter. At that moment, Yamu and Spopovich jump into the ring and Shin paralyzes Gohan when he is about to attack. Yamu and Spopovich steal Gohan's energy, reverting him back to his normal state, and fly off, with Shin and the other Z Fighters in pursuit. Kibito heals Gohan, restoring his energy and explains they are going after Spopovich and Yamu to find Babidi's spaceship. Gohan and Kibito, along with Videl, fly away to meet up with the Z Fighters.
"Come on, Dabura! Show your true power, you can't win at this rate!"
After flying for a time, Videl gets tired and decides to head back to the World Tournament, seeing as the opponent they are going to face is too powerful for her. However, before leaving, she and Gohan have a conversation about the identity of the Gold Fighter, who is actually Gohan. Figuring this out, Videl comes to the conclusion that seven years ago during the Cell Games, Gohan was the golden-haired boy who had killed Cell, not Mr. Satan. Gohan and Videl say goodbye to each other and Videl promises that she is not through with him yet, indicating that she has fallen for him. Gohan and Kibito later catch up with Shin and the Z Fighters at Babidi's spaceship.
They hide and secretly watch as Yamu and Spopovich give the energy to the evil wizard Babidi, who retaliates by killing them. Dabura and Babidi realize the Z Fighters are nearby and decide to steal their energy by killing the weaker fighters and luring them into the spaceship. Dabura flies up to the Z Fighters and kills Kibito with a Evil Impulse blast at point blank range. After a brief fight, Dabura spits on Krillin and Piccolo, turning them to stone, and flies back to the spaceship, with Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, and a reluctant Shin following behind.
When they get inside the spaceship, they are told they must defeat the three fighters if they want to destroy Babidi. The first fighter, Pui Pui, appears and fights against Vegeta, only to be easily killed when the Saiyan prince fires a powerful energy blast on Pui Pui's chest. Goku is the next to fight against Yakon, the second fighter, who has the ability to absorb energy. However, Goku manages to kill him by making him absorb too much of his energy, causing Yakon to explode. With the two fighters defeated, Gohan fights against the last and strongest of Babidi's fighters, Dabura in a mountain area. At first, Gohan is fighting a little rusty against Dabura due to not training during the seven years after the Cell Games, but after transforming into his Super Saiyan form, Gohan manages to fight evenly with the Demon King. However, it is revealed by Goku and Vegeta that Gohan had a lot more power when he faced Cell seven years earlier. Vegeta becomes disgraced with Gohan's lack of motivation and expresses his frustration, believing Gohan to have peaked in power. Dabura notices Vegeta's frustration and stops the fight with Gohan to report his findings to Babidi.
Soon after the fight, Vegeta's mind is taken over Babidi's magic, transforming him into Majin Vegeta thus releasing the evil in his heart. Babidi transports them to the World Tournament arena, where Majin Vegeta destroys parts of the stadium, killing many people to convince Goku to fight him. Goku agrees and they are transported to a desert area. Before leaving with Shin to stop Babidi, Gohan is given a Senzu Bean by Goku, who tells him to remember about the people he is fighting for and how much he cares about them and let that be his weapon. Gohan says goodbye to Goku as he and Shin head down Babidi's spaceship to confront the evil wizard, while Goku and Majin Vegeta fight their intense battle.
"But there's people I care about! And this time around, I'm not gonna just stand by and let them all get hurt!"
After easily defeating many weak henchmen, Gohan and Shin make it to the bottom of the ship where the Sealed Ball containing Majin Buu is. Babidi and Dabura appear and prepare to release the Majin from the ball. Shin orders Gohan to retreat and wait for the others to think of a way to defeat Majin Buu, but Gohan, remembering his father's words, refuses and says he needs to protect the people he cares about. Gohan powers up and fires an Electric Kamehameha one after another attempting to destroy the cocoon and Majin Buu along with it, but the cocoon is unaffected. The cocoon finally stops steaming and hatches, but nothing is inside. However, only Gohan knows that something did come out of the cocoon, and it was forming something up into the sky. The steam that erupted from the cocoon forms into a pink, fat creature: Majin Buu.
Despite his best efforts to protect Shin from Majin Buu, Gohan is left nearly killed after Majin Buu fires a devastating attack that blasts him up into the sky. The weakened Shin uses his psychic powers to destroy the attack and Gohan ends up falling down into a nearby forest, unconscious and severely beaten. Fortunately, when Kibito is brought back to life by the Dragon Balls he locates and heals Shin. They eventually find Gohan in the forest and bring him to the Sacred World of the Kai to be healed. After being revived, Gohan is then told he was brought to the Kai Planet to pull out the legendary Z Sword to defeat Majin Buu. At first, Gohan has trouble pulling the Z Sword out, but after transforming into a Super Saiyan 2, he manages to pull it out.
During his training with the Z Sword, Gohan reunites with his father Goku, who has returned from Earth where he transformed into Super Saiyan 3 to fight Majin Buu. Goku is surprised to see that his son is still alive and discovers Shin was behind this. Seeing Gohan's excellent progress with the Z Sword, Goku decides to test its strength by throwing a huge boulder, which Gohan easily slices in half. Supreme Kai summons a large cube of Katchin, the densest metal in the universe, to test if Gohan can slice through it. However, when Goku throws the Katchin at Gohan, the Z Sword snaps in two and from the broken sword emerges Old Kai, who tells them that he will fully unlock Gohan's latent potential in a ritual.
"Fight you? No, I wanna kill you."
As Goku, Shin, and Kibito observe what is happening down on Earth, Gohan grows increasingly impatient as Old Kai reads and laughs at comics instead of unlocking his power. Gohan soon loses his patience and angrily powers up, displaying an amazing power that illuminates the Supreme Kai planet. However, amazed at realizing that some of his power really was unlocked, Gohan apologizes to Old Kai, and resumes the ritual. After some time, the ritual is finally completed and Gohan is told to power up like he does for the Super Saiyan transformation; however, when he does, his appearance does not change, but his power and strength gain an awesome increase. Gohan says goodbye to Shin, Old Kai, and his father Goku and is transported back to Earth by Kibito. Before Kibito transports back to the Supreme Kai planet, Gohan asks for the clothes reminiscent of his father's, to which Kibito happily complies. Kibito wishes Gohan good luck and transports back to the Supreme Kai planet. With his power finally released and the fate of the world now in his hands, Gohan flies off to confront the new Majin Buu: Super Buu.
Gohan arrives on the battlefield where he finds Goten, Trunks, and Piccolo, who reveal that all of their friends and family were killed and eaten by Super Buu. Gohan is angry about this at first, until he senses Dende's faint energy signature. Gohan powers up and completely outclasses Super Buu, much to the shock of Goten, Trunks, and Piccolo. No matter how much he tries, Super Buu is unable to land any damage on Gohan, who easily dodges and blocks all of the monster's strongest attacks. In an act of desperation, Super Buu attempts to self-destruct and take Gohan with him, but Gohan sees through this and grabs and flies away with Piccolo, Goten, and Trunks before they are all caught in the explosion.
After getting to a safe distance, Gohan explains to Goten, Trunks, and Piccolo how he had become very powerful through Old Kai's magic ritual. Gohan and the others sense Dende's weak life force and decide to fly after him before Super Buu does. Along the way, they meet up and rescue an exhausted Mr. Satan and his adopted dog, Bee, who were strolling around in the desert. They finally locate Dende, who explains to them that he was thrown off of the Lookout by Mr. Popo before he could be hit by Super Buu's Transfiguration Beam. After the hour is up, Super Buu arrives and challenges Goten and Trunks to fight him again for a rematch, which the boys agree on and fuse into Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks. At that moment, however, Super Buu absorbs Gotenks and Piccolo, resulting in a massive increase of mental and physical strength.
"I'm tougher than Gotenks and smarter than Piccolo. So I guess the only thing you have to worry about is if I'm stronger than you."
As the battle begins, Gohan manages to fight evenly with the new Super Buu until Buu starts playing mind games with Gohan. Once Gohan gets frustrated, Buu begins thrashing Gohan, all the while using Piccolo's intelligence to continue playing mind games and further torment Gohan. When he remarks that Dende is healing Gohan's injuries, Buu attacks Dende. Tien Shinhan soon joins the fight, saving Dende and Mr. Satan, but Super Buu quickly defeats him with one kick and prepares an attack capable of destroying the entire Earth. At the last second, however, Goku (after receiving Potara Earrings from Old Kai) appears and slices Super Buu in half. Goku throws one earring to Gohan, but Gohan fails to catch it and Goku is forced to transform into his Super Saiyan 3 form to stall Super Buu, while Gohan searches for the earring. He manages to find the earring, but since Gotenks defused inside of Super Buu, which caused his power to decrease, Goku says there is no need for Potara Fusion, seeing as they can easily beat Super Buu now. However, Super Buu manages to absorb Gohan while he is caught off-guard, vastly increasing his power.
Later, Goku and Vegeta (who had fused into Vegito to dominate Super Buu) enter Super Buu's body and escape with Gohan, Goten, Trunks, and Piccolo. However, this causes Super Buu to undergo a final transformation into his original form – Kid Buu. Gohan is killed when Kid Buu destroys the Earth, but he is soon revived along with the Earth and everyone else by Porunga. When they learn from Vegeta that Goku needs energy for his Super Spirit Bomb, they contribute part of their energy to the Spirit Bomb, but the citizens of Earth are reluctant to give up their energy. However, after Mr. Satan convinces the people to donate their energy, the Super Spirit Bomb is completed, and Goku obliterates Kid Buu once and for all.

Gohan is cooking for Videl but it turns into a fiasco. Six months later, Gohan's first child has been born and is named Pan. Gohan finally became the scholar he wanted to be. One time, Gohan returned home and wanted to play with Pan as his alter ego Great Saiyaman self but Mr. Satan wanted to play too. They both began tossing Pan around until Chi-Chi interrupted and began yelling at them. Gohan along with Mr. Satan wanted Pan to be a martial artist but she did not want another warrior in the family.
Gohan notices that Goku is trying to leave and go with Whis and train so he tells his mother to try to prevent him from going. When Goku is about to leave, Gohan shows up with Chi-Chi and Goten with him and Gohan argues that Goku needs to train and grow stronger in order to protect the Earth, but Chi-Chi didn't budge to that and was eventually relieved when Chi-Chi abruptly gave into Goku's wishes after he leaves as she knows that he will return when he gets hungry.
Gohan returns home with Videl. They have Piccolo babysit Pan when they're away. By the time of Frieza's revival, Gohan shows up and notices that Piccolo is worried. Piccolo senses power that he can't explain, then Gohan notices it too. Four months later, when Gohan and Piccolo heard news of Frieza's return, they join Master Roshi, Krillin, and Tien Shinhan in the fight against him and his army of 1,000 soldiers.
Gohan tells everyone that Goten and Trunks will not show up due to Bulma's request and they would do something reckless. When Krillin wondered if Buu was going to show up, Gohan says that he won't because he fell asleep and it'll be hard waking him up. Master Roshi asks if Gohan has kept up with his training, he declines but says that he can probably go Super Saiyan. Gohan takes on Frieza's army along with Piccolo, Krillin, Tien Shinhan, Jaco, and Master Roshi.
Gohan challenges Shisami when he approaches. Gohan shoots a barrage of ki blasts while he gets charged at by Shisami then gets caught in a Bear Hug. Gohan isn't struggling while being in the possession of Shisami. He tells him that he has a child and that when a person like him disturbs the peace, he needs to protect them. Before Gohan could attack Shisami, Tagoma shoots a ki blast at them and kills Shisami and critically injures Gohan. Gohan's heart stops beating so Piccolo restarts it by blasting a kiai and was given a Senzu Bean by Krillin.
Tagoma is taken on by Piccolo but when he's in need, Gohan helps Piccolo by shooting a blast at Tagoma to get him away. However, Gohan's blast doesn't hurt Tagoma as his body has endured the pain and suffering from Frieza, making his body steel-like. Gotenks comes out of nowhere and charges Tagoma and hits him in his crotch. Captain Ginyu switches bodies with Tagoma and takes on the Z Fighters with his immense power. They are easily beat by Ginyu with just single punches to everyone. Gohan takes on Captain Ginyu after he switches bodies with Tagoma. Gohan is struggling to fight against Captain Ginyu because he hasn't been training to maintain his power. Gohan transforms into a Super Saiyan and beats Ginyu in several hits but spares him.
Frieza gets furious because Gohan transformed into a Super Saiyan and sparing Ginyu, reminding him of when Goku spared him on Namek and thought it would be fun to torture him to make Goku mad. Gohan is shot numerous times through the arms, legs, stomach and chest with Death Beams, leaving him on the ground, nearly dead. As the fatal Death Beam Frieza shot at Gohan, Piccolo gets in front of the beam and takes it for Gohan, once again dying for him. Devastated, Gohan expresses regret for not training and not even having the power to protect Piccolo and his family, with Krillin comforting Gohan and assuring him that him giving up fighting to be with his family is not a bad thing. While Frieza taunts and threatens to also kill Videl and Pan, Gohan vows to stop him at all costs, causing him to power up to his fullest. At this time Bulma manages to contact Whis and inform them of what is happening so Whis gathers Beerus, Goku and Vegeta and attempt to find Earth for Goku however Goku can't sense anyone so Whis shows him a picture of Gohan to assist.
Gohan's rage is building and he stands back up ready to fight Frieza and begins to power up with what little energy he has left. Krillin, Master Roshi, Tien, Goten and Trunks attempt to calm Gohan down saying Goku and Vegeta will be here in a moment but he isn't listening and powers up further. Beerus commends Gohan for being able to put out so much power not knowing he had it in him and says Goku surely has to sense him by now however he isn't, with Vegeta getting annoyed at Goku for not being able to sense Gohan yet. Gohan's rage blows and he powers up to Super Saiyan not only turning the sky black but putting out more than enough power for Goku and Vegeta to sense.
Gohan's body, however, is too injured to go on and his body breaks, dropping him out of Super Saiyan, leaving him dazed and powerless. Frieza laughs and fires a Death Beam at his head however Goku and Vegeta arrive and block the attack for Gohan and Goku catches Gohan. Gohan is disappointed in himself for not being able to save Piccolo and being too weak, however Goku and Vegeta commend him for putting out so much power that they were able to sense him all the way from Beerus's planet and they are proud of him for standing up to the newly empowered Frieza for so long on his own. Goku gives Gohan to Krillin, who brings him back with a Senzu bean. Gohan retreats with Krillin, leaving the battle to Goku.
He then watches the fight between Goku and Frieza and later Vegeta who steps in after Goku is taken out. After Frieza destroys the Earth, Gohan gets protected by Whis, along with the others. Whis undoes time for Goku to be able to kill Frieza and send him back to Earth's Hell. After that, Gohan heads back home to see that Videl and Pan are okay then he embraces them and promises to protect them at all costs. He is later seen at a party, with the other Z fighters who participated in the fight and talks to Piccolo as he realized he needs to train and asks Piccolo if he could do so and Piccolo accepts this and tells him to maintain his dull body first.

"Will you train me again? This battle made me realize something, in order to protect those who are important to me I need to get more and more powerful"
Sometime after the encounter with Golden Frieza, Gohan has been training with Piccolo in order to regain his lost power. During the training, Piccolo has grown considerably stronger and has become equal to or even surpassed Gohan. One day while they are training, Goku and Vegeta show up to recruit Piccolo to a team for the Tournament of Destroyers, but Gohan insists that he should take his place because he wants to show off his new found power. However, after hearing from Goku that the tournament is in four days, Gohan is disappointed because he has to attend an important conference for Videl's benefit and thus, he cannot participate in the tournament.

A few days after the tournament ends, Goku suffers from Delayed Onset Ki Disorder, due to recklessly using his ki against Hit. Due to not controlling his ki properly, he destroys his house so he, Goten, and Chi Chi move into Gohan's house in Satan City. Gohan and Videl are dressed formally, eating lunch with a professor and his wife, while Piccolo babysits Pan at their house. The professor was impressed with Gohan's presentation at the conference and wants to hire him as his assistant. During the lunch, however, Goku calls Gohan to tell him what happened.
Gohan and Videl later come home to greet Pan. Goku, Goten, Chi Chi, and Piccolo are there. Gohan is surprised that Pan learned a new word, calling Goku "Gramps". Gohan reveals that he turned down the job as the professors assistant, because it would take too much time away from Videl and Pan.
"Future" Trunks Saga
Main article: "Future" Trunks Saga
In the anime, Gohan is met by Future Trunks during a conference and while having ice cream with him is sized up by Future Trunks as not being of the same power that he once was (complete with 90s animation flashbacks). Gohan introduces Future Trunks to his family not long after, Gohan having to don his Great Saiyaman disguise to retrieve Pan once she starts flying around and finishing his work before stopping a tug-of-war over Future Trunks' sword between his daughter and old friend. Gohan, Future Trunks and Pan go outside, Gohan revealing that he wishes he could be more strict with her but cannot due to him getting "soft" whenever he looks at her. Gohan bids Future Trunks a farewell and realizes that he forgot to ask Future Trunks why he had returned to the past to begin with.
He is later called for a meeting about the situation of Future Trunks' timeline and the true origin of Goku Black being originally the Universe 10 Supreme Kai Gowasu's apprentice Zamasu from the unaltered main timeline. Gohan is horrified to learn that Zamasu swapped bodies with Goku through the Super Dragon Balls and killed Goku, Goten and Chi Chi in that unaltered main timeline, and lastly invaded Future Trunks' timeline with the aid from Zamasu of that timeline to exterminate humanity and kill all gods around the universes. Gohan realizes this is the reason Trunks returned to the past.
After Zamasu's demise at cost of sacrificing Future Trunks' universe by Future Zeno, leaving Future Trunks, Future Mai, and Future Zeno as the only three survivors from their universe, Gohan flies to Future Trunks and Future Mai, bidding them farewell to find another world safely. Future Trunks in turn sees the Gohan of the alternate timeline reflected on the current Gohan.
In the manga, Gohan does not show up for most of this saga. Gohan meets Future Trunks at Capsule Corp after Zamasu's defeat. Gohan reveals he was training in the Gravity Room - as no one has asked for his help in recent battles. He tells Future Trunks he wishes to visit his peaceful timeline and Future Trunks tells Gohan he will let him visit at some point later - as Future Trunks has decided to go to a new future timeline.
In the anime, Following this Gohan partakes in the Universe 7 vs Universe 6 friendly baseball game and fills the role of catcher. Gohan admits to not knowing much about baseball but tells his dad to just throw the ball at him and that should work. Seeing Champa is up first, Beerus instructs Goku to throw the ball as hard as he can. Goku, taking the advice literally, powers up to Super Saiyan Blue and throws the pitch as hard as he can, engulfing the pitch in his godly ki much to Gohan and Champa's shock, leveling half of the playing field. To everyone's shock Gohan actually caught the ball bare handed and emerged from the rubble mostly unharmed, laughing that he almost got vaporized giving Champa his first strike. Later when Gohan is up to bat, Piccolo pulls him aside and instructs him to hit the ball to Magetta. Piccolo tells Gohan that he wasn't present for the tournament but Magetta can't fly. Gohan does as instructed but Botamo is thrown into the air to catch it, however Champa intervenes and grabs the ball himself and throws it to Yamcha and hits him in the spine however Yamcha landed on 3rd base, making him safe.
Not too long after, Gohan notices his dad is acting strange and opts to follow him one day as the Great Saiyaman with Goten. After witnessing his odd behavior, Gohan tells Goten he will invite them over to eat tomorrow and confront him about it. After supper where Goku was normal, Gohan and Goten confront Goku. Goku tells them someone is out to kill him and they promise not to tell Chi Chi. Piccolo, who was present for dinner notices Gohan is thinking about something and confronts him about it. Gohan comes clean and tells Piccolo what Goku had told him and Goten. Piccolo, initially not concerned, says that there aren't many who could actually threaten Goku until they both feel Goku's ki disappear. Both quickly realize Goku has turned Super Saiyan Blue and the situation is serious, so they head off to help Goku. Gohan tells Goten to stay, but Goten protests saying he can help and isn't useless. Gohan relents and allows Goten to come along. When they catch up to Goku they find him, lifeless, on the ground. Initially sad, Piccolo throws Goten aside and begins CPR, but fails to revive Goku. Gohan, sensing something, looks up and notices a giant ki blast falling back to Earth at Goku and has everyone move. It is revealed that Goku fired the blast at himself to revive himself after he died. Goku tells them to get away and Hit is here for him. Gohan and the others leave Goku to confront Hit alone, but return with Chi Chi later as Piccolo reveals Chi Chi forced them to tell her.
A few weeks later, Gohan hears of a Great Saiyaman Movie where he is to battle Mr. Satan. However, instead of having Gohan play the role, the film studio got Barry Kahn, a world-famous actor, to play the role. Gohan heads to the set with Videl and Mr. Satan and Pan and meets Barry. Barry tries to hit on Videl, but Videl turns him down harshly and walks away with Gohan. Barry quickly covers for himself as cameras were present. Barry's ego and vanity cause him to change much of the film to make it more action packed, with stunts that were impossible and fatal for ordinary people to perform so Gohan sneaks into the stunt double's room in his Great Saiyaman outfit and convinces the stunt double to leave it to the real Saiyaman. Due to the extreme amount of changes Barry made to the script, Gohan ended up acting the majority of the film with Barry barely doing anything. As the filming progressed and Gohan kept performing these normally fatal and dangerous stunts effortlessly, he kept gaining more and more attention, with Barry becoming more jealous of him, even with the film's love interest starting to fall for Gohan.
During the filming, a bank robbery takes place and Gohan, in Great Saiyaman gear, actually flies away to go and take care of it, leaving some of the crew to wonder if it really is the true Great Saiyaman. Krillin initially confronts the robbers, but is accidentally taken out by Gohan entering the bank. The robbers recognize Great Saiyaman when a parasite that Jaco has been chasing attaches itself to one of the robbers, causing him to bulk up and slap the other through a wall and attack Gohan. While initially taken aback by what was happening, Gohan at first fell back, effortlessly dodging the rapid fire punches and kicks, but tells him not to get cocky and levels him with one kick and prepares to finish them off with a Kamehameha but thinks twice about it not wanting to attract attention to himself for using a worldwide known move and instead creates a new attack on the spot an orange finger beam he quickly names "The Great Saiyaman Beam."
Afterwards, Krillin confronts Gohan about being there calling him by name but Gohan protests and calls himself the Great Saiyaman. Krillin relents and plays along, asking him how does his wife allow Gohan to dress so stupidly at his age. Gohan proudly proclaims Videl thinks it is cool and supports him 100% and goes back to posing and while posing, notices the parasite slide into the sewer. The news cover the story, but Barry quickly swoops in and claims it was a publicity stunt for the film and the Great Saiyaman isn't working on the film as he is a washed up has-been hero who needs someone like him to give him some spot light, much to Gohan's annoyance who is talking to Hercule about it.
During the conversation, the film's love interest catches Gohan unmasked. Gohan, worried about his job, now is revealed when she says that she doesn't care and finds it cool that he is just a normal person underneath the helmet and asks Gohan to fly her home like in the film so she can see things from his point of view. Despite Gohan's hesitation, Hercule convinces him to do so and he will distract Videl.
While flying her home, Jaco, believing Gohan is infected with the parasite, fires his Super Elite Cannon at Gohan and Gohan dodges it landing on Jaco's ship telling him to stop. They land and Jaco explains what he is after, a parasite named Watagash who brings out the evil in people's hearts. The more hatred they have the stronger the result. After this, Gohan runs Cocoa home and they practice the film lines. During the practice Cocoa breaks down and has a flashback to Barry, who is blackmailing her to keep Gohan in her apartment all night so the paparzite can get photos of her and Gohan together as revenge for Gohan and Videl standing him up. While Cocoa doesn't tell Gohan she closes the blinds after Gohan motivates her and they head up to the roof where they practice all night. After they are done, Cocoa tells Gohan her apartment is dangerous and she kisses him. Gohan nervously flies off quickly, but not before Barry gets several photos of them. Gohan heads back home and is greeted by Videl, who was under the impression that Gohan was doing a late night filming.
Gohan opting to go along with it says yeah and before they can eat, Barry arrives at their house and attempts to blackmail Gohan and Videl with the photos he took. Videl, enraged at Barry, calls him pathetic and lacking in self-confidence saying that Gohan has a reason for doing what he was doing and trusts him. His confidence restored, Gohan tells Barry to leave. Barry attempts to intimidate Gohan, but a pissed-off Gohan blasts him into a wall with a weak Kiai and angrily demands he leaves now. Outside, Barry is enraged he got embarrassed and beat up by Gohan when Watagash infects him. Barry, with his new power, sneak attacks Gohan and Videl. Gohan shoves Videl aside and takes the sneak attack which knocks him out cold. When he comes around he notice Pan is missing with a message written into the wall telling him to come to the TV station. Enraged, Gohan heads off instantly and confronts Barry, who has been gaining a lot of media attention on top of the studio with Pan, who isn't scared but amused. Barry mocks Gohan, asking him to do a cheesy catch phrase for him, but Gohan charges him and unloads on Barry and overwhelms him and knocks his transforming body to the ground. Barry, now unrecognizable, continues to power up due to his hatred while Videl arrives to get Pan along with the Director and a film crew with Cocoa to record and watch the fight. Barry, now larger than a skyscraper, attacks Gohan and Gohan realizes that Barry is far faster then he is, appearing to actually teleport and knocks Gohan around for a bit. Gohan attempts to keep up for a time, but is eventually caught and crushed in Barry's hands and blasted into space with a massive eye beam.
Cocoa, believing Gohan to be dead, begins to cry but Videl tells her to be quiet and explains that she and Pan believe in him. Videl continues that to her, Gohan is an invincible superhero who can never be beaten and Gohan would never allow himself to lose in front of her. Together with Pan, Videl and Pan call out to Gohan who is floating above the clouds injured from the blast. Hearing Pan, Gohan regains the will to fight and reminds himself he will never lose for Pan, no matter what and powers up to Super Saiyan and flies back down, with the Director calling the form "Super Great Saiyaman." Not wasting time Gohan begins to charge up a Super Kamehameha while Barry charges up an even larger Eye Beam and fires it. Gohan fires his attack, calling it the "Super Great Saiyaman Beam" and effortlessly plows through Barry's attack and nearly kills him defeating Watagash and Barry, leading to Jaco coming and recapturing Watagash.
Gohan instinctively begins to pose in Saiyaman style and mouths off to Barry's unconscious body that he was holding back on him. After his posing, Gohan comes back down and apologizes to Videl for making her worry. The Director was able to work the battle as the final scene of the film and the film is overwhelmingly positive by the public. A heavily injured Barry is present, but a shell of his former vain self, with Hercule speaking over him and Cocoa actually blackmailing Barry, telling him that if he reveals that Gohan is the Great Saiyaman, she will use the proof Gohan gave her to show the public that Barry was the monster who attacked the city. At the screening of the film, Goten is once again overjoyed about the Great Saiyaman wanting to use the Super Great Saiyaman Beam as his new attack with Chi Chi proud of Gohan. Goku also present reveals he is proud as well, but fell asleep during the film as he likes to be in fights, not watching fights. Chi Chi attacks Goku and begins to berate him while Videl and Pan smile at Gohan.
After this Chi Chi and Goten invite Gohan over and they head out to the fields and notice Goku plowing the fields and training. Chi Chi says that she thought of the idea as it keeps both Goku and her happy. Goten reveals that dad wants a sparring partner and thought of Gohan. Gohan attempts to get out of it by mentioning Whis, Vegeta and Piccolo but they are all busy. Gohan reveals he would love to but he doesn't fight anymore but know someone who does and turns into the Great Saiyaman and approaches Goku who calls him Gohan initially. Gohan protests and tells him he got him confused with someone else. Chi Chi is happy and says Gohan is in total character.
Gohan then dares Goku to take him on and he is here to help someone in need of a sparring partner. Goku accepts and charges Gohan. Gohan, while initially stunned by Goku's speed, was able to block the shot and actually push back his father, with Goku revealing he was testing him and powers up to Super Saiyan with Gohan throwing off the Saiyaman helmet and going Super Saiyan as well. Ultimately, their match ends when Chi Chi yells at them to stop as they ended up destroying the entire field and countyside.

After learning that Future Zeno wants a preview of what a martial arts tournament is and only gives Goku an hour to find two more team members. Goku instantly heads to Earth at the request of Beerus, who yelled at Goku to take responsibility for the destruction of 11 other universes. Goku instantly heads to Vegeta who turns him down saying he is waiting for his child to be born and suggests his son. Goku looks at Goten and Trunks who are training together, but says they aren't ready yet. Suddenly, he figures out who Vegeta was talking about and goes to Gohan. Goku asks, but Gohan is once again hesitant and says that he still doesn't have his instincts back. Goku tells Gohan that a good fight is all Gohan will need to get his instincts back and reminds him of their fight in the fields a few days ago. Goku decides to tell Gohan what the stakes are and Gohan is scared and asks his dad what will they do if they lose and Goku says they will deal with it. Gohan, disappointed with his father's recklessness, calms down when he sees Pan and Videl, with Videl telling Gohan to partake in the fight and to listen and respect his dad's wishes once in a while. Motivated, Gohan agrees to fight. At this time Hercule and Buu arrive with Goku convincing Buu to fight, bringing along Hercule to act as Buu's handler. Gohan having found his gi once again arrives on the Sacred World of the Kai's. Beerus was initially unamused with Gohan and Buu as the choices but he quickly warms up to Gohan after Goku revealed that Gohan suggested they keep the destruction of the universe if they lose quiet as it would cause a panic, which Beerus thought was a great idea.
After witnessing Buu's victory, Gohan requests to go next and squares off with his foe, Lavender and is considering taking it slow so he can regain his fighting senses. Goku tells him no and to go all out at him since he can't sense him thus making Gohan's plan useless. Realizing his father is right Gohan says he will go all out from the start, saying he needs to see how strong he is so he can know where he needs to improve. Gohan and Lavender engage each other in rapid fire punches and kicks with Gohan driving him back. Gohan goes for an early knock out but Lavender attaches himself to Gohan's arm and sprays him in the face with poison blinding him, allowing Lavender to batter Gohan around. Hercule is worried about the poison but Goku says it could be bad but this is perfect training for Gohan as he is blinded and can't sense his opponent and tells Hercule that Gohan is at his absolute best when he is backed into a corner like this and this is perfect for bringing back his fighting senses. Ro begins bragging that Gohan will die if he doesn't give up as his body will rot away.
Shin takes out senzu beans and says that if Universe 9 can do it so can they. Shin is about to throw Gohan a senzu bean but yells at him to stop and says he refuses it and wants to win under his own strength to Goku's approval. Gohan then begins to concentrate and tones out Lavender's voice and using his ears is able to pinpoint his attacks and is able to block them, much to Lavender's shock calling it a fluke and tries again and Gohan blocks all of them and retaliates. Lavender falls back and bombards Gohan with ki blasts only to have Gohan block and deflect all of them. Lavender flies up and attacks from afar knowing how Gohan is sensing him. Hercule and Shin are worried again but Goku tells them to relax and while admits this may be bad reminds them that the deeper the hole Gohan is in the better for him right now as Gohan is remembering how to fight. Having been bombarded with numerous shots Gohan says his potential is far from unleashed and accesses his full potential and pushes it one step farther into Super Saiyan shocking everyone. The Zeno's are amazed at the form and call it very pretty and strong. While the God's present discuss the form, a fighter from Universe 11 says that the individuals from Universe 7 must be able to hide their true powers.
Lavender isn't impressed at the form and attacks again only for Gohan to deflect the blast and the numerous ones that follow, then Gohan suddenly charges him and attacks. Lavender assuming Gohan is able to see again begins to protest but Gohan tells him he is still blind but his energy is telling him where he is. Goku impressed by Gohan and says not bad. Whis calls what Gohan is doing as brilliant using his energy like a radar but says it is a double edged sword and says that his Super Saiyan form will accelerate the poison. Gohan attacks and overwhelms Lavender and throws him to the ground hard, with Lavender barely able to stand. Gohan flies in for the final blow but the poison accelerates to Gohan's heart nearly killing him and powers him back down to normal. Lavender begins to batter a dying Gohan around more and says he will enjoy killing him, Gohan not done yet stands back up and powers up once again to Super Saiyan, ignoring the risk to his life much to Shin's protests and attacks once again.
After another exchange Gohan fires a Kamehameha at Lavender's attack and begins to overpower him but the poison reaches Gohan's arms and Gohan is overwhelmed by Lavender's attack and Lavender tries to kill Gohan with another blast of his poison breathe. Gohan having had enough of Lavender's games flies straight through the poison to everyone's shock however Gohan emerges unharmed and grabs Lavender in a Full Nelson. Lavender asks how and Gohan replies he doesn't need eye sight to grab him at this range and flies straight up high into the void and turns upside down and flies back down to the arena floor as fast as he can. Lavender attempts to escape but Gohan being far physically stronger is able to restrain Lavender and piledrive him clean through the arena floor knocking Lavender out cold. A near dead Gohan rises to his feet and declares himself the winner and passes out.
The Grand Priest moves in to inspect the damage and says that since both fighters are unconscious the fight is a draw much to everyone's disappointment, saying that a great fight shouldn't end like that. The fight over Goku goes to the floor and gives Gohan a Senzu Bean and tells Gohan the news. Gohan is disappointed in himself for not being stronger but Goku tells Gohan that he is amazingly strong as he is and is proud of him and says that he is genuinely excited from watching him fight and can't wait for his fight now. Gohan seeing how excited his dad is cheers up and stands up saying he still wants to become stronger. Goku's fight is up next and before leaving the ring the Grand Priest repairs it. As Goku gets ready, Gohan wishes his father luck and Goku and Gohan fist bump.
While the battle between Goku and Top goes on, Gohan remarks that he is getting excited watching the battle between them, owing this sensation to his alien heritage. After the battle, Gohan resolves to think of a strategy before he begins to work with his father to form the team, with Gohan suggesting Piccolo and Master Roshi. When Goku suggests Krillin, Gohan doubts him and Goku requests they simulate the battle with image training. It was determined initially that Krillin would be slaughtered but Goku told Gohan he hasn't seen him lately and said he would be fine and told Gohan to come and see. Goku and Gohan go and get Krillin and Android 18 and they both agree but Gohan wants to test Krillin 1st under the tournament rules. Gohan was initially surprised at Krillin's increased power but begins to overpower him but falls out of the ring after Krillin uses his new technique, the x100 Solar Flare. Realizing he is still rusty, Gohan heads off to find Piccolo.
After finding Piccolo and filling him in, Piccolo agrees, and says he wants to take the time they have to retrain Gohan to use his old powers again. Piccolo reveals he has two Senzu Beans and they will only use them when they are done and not before and demands Gohan to come at him. Gohan powers up to Super Saiyan and attacks but is easily pushed back by Piccolo who is still wearing his weights. Piccolo reveals that Goku came to him a while ago and already asked him and was concerned about Gohan in the tournament. Goku mentioned that while incredibly strong he is extremely rusty and entrusted Piccolo to get his senses back. Piccolo tells Gohan he has one major weakness and that is he has been too eager and that is hindering his power and always has. Piccolo tells him to settle down a bit. Gohan, listening, powers back up to Super Saiyan 2 once again. Piccolo and Gohan begin to battle and Piccolo takes off his weights saying that is enough of a warm-up and quickly gains the upper hand on Gohan and entangles him in his extended arms and begins to strangle Gohan, telling him he will murder him if he doesn't get out of it.
Gohan wonders how Piccolo got so strong and Piccolo screams at him that he hasn't been sitting around while he studied as Gohan passes out into a near death state. Piccolo brings his pupil in and shoots him in the heart with a Kiai reviving him. After waking up, Piccolo tells Gohan that he hasn't given his heart into the warrior that lives inside him and this causes him to let his guard down at vital moments. Piccolo goes on to say that his great power always goes to his head and "you get drunk on power" and become arrogant and overconfident, leading to him always being defeated. Gohan powers back up to Super Saiyan 2 and heeding Piccolo's words attacks again and does better but Piccolo screams at Gohan that Super Saiyan isn't his true power and screams at him to re-awaken "your true self."
Gohan, heeding Piccolo's words to reawaken his warrior spirit, finally reawakens his Potential Unleashed state. Piccolo, proud of Gohan, summons his clones and fights Gohan again, with Gohan saying he isn't gonna hold back. The clones attack and Gohan defeats them all with simple single blows and even takes out Piccolo in one shot by chopping his arm clean off. Gohan, shocked that he actually got the real Piccolo, hesitates and Piccolo attacks him from behind with his severed arm. Piccolo says that he dropped his guard again and tells Gohan that he gets that from his father and tells Gohan not to be like his dad and to not stop until the fight is over. Gohan agrees and they take a break, with Gohan cutting off a T-Rex's tail and cooking it for them. Piccolo tells Gohan that he believes that his current state isn't his true and full power and believes Gohan can push himself much farther and Piccolo extends his hand and tells Gohan to give him the chance to help him attain that power. He asks Gohan is he curious to how strong he can become. Gohan says yes and shakes Piccolo's hand without hesitation and suggests how about working on a few tag team attacks. Piccolo says he likes the idea and agrees.
Later Gohan and Piccolo are meditating together and Piccolo tells Gohan that he has taught him as much as he can and together they go to find Goku, who is eating with Master Roshi, Tien and Chiaotzu. Gohan asks for a fight with his father, which shocks all but Goku himself, who was immediately impressed by his son's power due to sensing it the moment he walked in. They move out into a mountain plateau and Roshi tells them it is a tag team battle royale just like the tournament. Tien tells Goku they should be careful so they don't hurt them but Goku tells Tien that they will get hurt if they are not careful as Gohan charges both of them. Goku blocks the shot and is struggling to keep up with Gohan and has to escape briefly. Gohan tells Tien and Goku he isn't full power yet which scares Tien however Piccolo reminds Gohan to cool it and Gohan reels himself back in.
Piccolo then begins to power up and Tien tells Goku that they need to stop Piccolo now and they both charge Piccolo. Gohan suddenly throws himself in front Piccolo and drops Tien with a massive body shot shocking Goku at Gohan's new ferocity then watches as Gohan powers up a bit more and attacks Goku again. Goku is able to stand his ground but is being gradually overwhelmed by Gohan's massive increase in power. Tien staggers back to his feet and prepares to shoot Gohan with the Tri-Beam but Goku tells him to ignore Gohan and hit Piccolo. Tien takes aim at Piccolo, but Gohan having heard kicks Goku away and fires a small explosive ki blast at Tien's feet to stop him and punches him straight through the mountain. Goku comes to Tien's aid and grazes Gohan as Gohan dodges Goku's attack. Tien pulls himself out of his hole and yells for Goku to look out. As Goku turns around he finds Piccolo behind him charged up and unleashed his Hyper Explosive Demon Wave on Goku. Goku attempts to block it but can't and is overwhelmed by the blast.
Gohan and Goku look to keep going but Tien tells them that is enough as the arena no longer exists. Not satisfied, Gohan wants his father to fight him one on one with an understanding Goku answering by going Super Saiyan 2. Tien and Piccolo move away as Gohan powers up to his Potential Unleashed state. Goku, shocked, asks Gohan no Super Saiyan and Gohan answers no and his goal is an ultimate form that no one has ever seen before. They begin fighting and while initially even, Gohan is pushing back Super Saiyan 2 Goku and blocking all of his attacks with no issues. Goku then has to use Instant Transmission to give himself an edge and knocks Gohan down hard and fires a kamehameha at him with Gohan returning one of his own. Goku asks Gohan to power up more and Gohan begins to do so but Goku uses Instant Transmission again to knock Gohan back. Gohan powers up more and chases Goku up into the air and begins to batter Goku around with no issues and demands Goku get serious.
After being thrown into the sky Goku has no choice and powers up to Super Saiyan Blue and engages Gohan again. Gohan charges at Goku and Goku powers up to Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-Ken. Hearing Piccolo cheering on Gohan from the ground Gohan smiles that he pushed his dad to his limit. Gohan and Goku move in for the final blow, with the impact being felt all across the planet and shocking the likes of Vegeta and the Kais, whom are watching the fight from Capsule Corp. When the dust clears Gohan falls unconscious. After taking some senzu beans Goku reveals he is extremely proud of Gohan and happy that Gohan is strong enough to make him get serious.
Impressed with Gohan, Goku reveals he is stepping down as Team Captain and appointing Gohan as the New Captain of Team Universe 7, much to Gohan's shock. With Gohan now in charge they reveal the news to Beerus, Whis, Supreme Kai, and Old Kai and Gohan instantly calls a meeting with all the members of Team Universe 7 to develop a strategy.
When Majin Buu falls sleep and Goku has gone to try to wake him up, most of the team meets at Capsule Corp. but Gohan decides to tell them the truth about the universe being erased if they lose when Krillin mentions prize money as a reward. Goku suggests they make Frieza as Majin Buu's replacement, much to Gohan's shock but relents because there is no one else to recruit. Vegeta and Frieza begin provoking each other and Gohan once again asks Vegeta to put aside the past so they can fight for the universe. Gohan and Piccolo decide to take command because Goku and Vegeta are not likely to rely on teamwork.
When the team is finally complete with ten members, Whis takes them to the World of Void, where they meet the warriors of the other universes. When the tournament begins Gohan goes over his battle plan with everyone which is to stand in a circle and fight as a group and using teamwork. Vegeta protests calling it boring. When the fighting begins Goku, 17, 18 Vegeta all run off instantly. Frieza walks off also but calls Gohan's plan interesting and nice but wants to get involved with the chaos. Gohan along with Beerus protest but Roshi calms Gohan down quickly telling him he shouldn't be shocked those 5 aren't following it. Gohan regains his composure and stand with Tien, Krillin, Piccolo and Roshi and fend off an attack from Universe 9 using teamwork. Gohan's plan appears to work, despite Tien, Roshi and Krillin being far weaker then the Universe 9 attackers.
After Universe 9 is erased, Gohan is just as shocked as the other fighters. They are attacked by Universe 10's Dium, but Gohan easily deflects his blast and reminds his teammates to not go all out and that as long as at least one of them lasts to the end, they will all be victorious. Dium goes for Gohan in anger at almost being hit, but Krillin and Master Roshi defeat him. Gohan witnesses Kale's rampage. After her rampage, Gohan is separated by the others, but they successfully regroup. After deciding that his plan would no longer work based on the current state of the battle field Gohan suggests it is best to break off into groups of 2, with Tien and Master Roshi being one and Gohan and Piccolo heading off in another. While wondering Gohan is attacked by Botamo and attacks. Botamo initially mocks his attempts when Goku arrives to watch the fight and questions what is Gohan doing. Eventually Gohan's plan is quickly realized as Gohan's attacks begin to lift Botamo clean off the ground with Gohan effortlessly able to punch Botamo off to the ring side and kick him high into the air and blast him over the edge with a Kamehamaha. Goku and Piccolo both proud of Gohan as they part ways again.
Shortly after Piccolo and Gohan are attacked by Obni and Rubalt, the final survivors of Universe 10. Rubalt quickly attacks Piccolo sending him flying away leaving Gohan alone with Obuni. In his base form Gohan is able to easily match Obni. However, when Obuni begins to use his technique of displacing his ki across several copies of himself Gohan begins to struggle finding the real one. Whis points out this is a problem for Gohan as Gohan doesn't actually use his eyes to find his opponent but rather instinctively his senses instead. Having a plan Gohan powers up and dares Obuni to try that again. Obuni obliges and Gohan takes the hit but this time doesn't budge. Piccolo appears having quickly disposed of Rubalt and watches Gohan fights back now. Gohan takes another hit and counters again. Whis points out that Gohan's plan is effective and will work but relies on Gohan being able to outlast his opponent due to taking so many powerful hits. Beerus, concerned, pleads with Gohan to not fail. Eventually Obuni's runs out of ki due to using far too many feints and Gohan begins to pummel him and overwhelm him, much to the delight of Beerus, Shin, Old Kai, and Whis. Gohan suddenly does a feint of his own blinding Obuni and jumps into the air and fires a Super Kamehameha knocking Obuni clear out of the ring. Gohan lands and finds a locket Obuni had around his neck which was of his family. Gohan becomes sad and mournful of what he has just done but Piccolo snaps him back to reality and that they need to be moving.
Sometime later, Gohan and Piccolo are approached by Universe 6's Dr. Rota. Dr. Rota wants to reveal his ability, however before he can do so, he is taken out by a powerful Ki Blast. Gohan and Piccolo hide. Piccolo throws a rock out in the open which is destroyed by the same Ki Blast that took out Dr. Rota. Piccolo says its an attack that focuses energy in one point like the Special Beam Cannon and is shot from far away. Also, Piccolo cannot sense the attacker's energy. Gohan asks if Dr. Rota is dead, Piccolo says that if he would be dead then the attacker would have been disqualified, meaning he is still alive. Gohan and Piccolo decide to move to an area with rubble without the attacker seeing them. Afterwards, Piccolo's arm is shot off, however Piccolo regenerates, and the two decide to find the attacker. While spheres are patrolling the area, Piccolo puts his arm out in the open, and is shot, however he dodges it. Gohan saw the direction of the shot and the two decide to head there to take out the attacker.
Gohan throws a rock which Piccolo blows up with a Ki Blast, creating dust, which they use as cover. In the dust, Piccolo finds one of Prum's spheres. Piccolo wonders what the sphere does, and the two are attacked once again. Piccolo destroys the sphere, revealing that the sphere had heat. Piccolo then takes a shot that was meant for Gohan, this time, both of his arms are shot off, however Piccolo regenerates once again. Piccolo reveals that the attacker is looking for their body heat, explaining why the attacker was capable of shooting them even in the dust. Piccolo and Gohan then heat up the entire area with heat in order to trick the attacker. Prum then bombards the entire area with Ki Blasts, cutting off Gohan and Piccolo. Gohan and Piccolo hide under a rock, as Tien comes to help them, dodge all the Ki Blasts. Gohan and Piccolo witness as Tien is eliminated by Hermila. After Hermila and Prum are eliminated, Gohan and Piccolo depart together.
Later on, Gohan is separated from Piccolo and is attacked by Jimizu of Universe 2. Despite the young Saiyan's superior power, he struggles against his opponent due to his professional use of instant transmission until Frieza steps in. The warlord taunts Gohan for not going all out like his father would and tortures Jimizu before eliminating him; Gohan criticizing Frieza's needless brutality. Things take a turn when Frost arrives to reveal his alliance with Frieza. Still not trusting him, Frost asks Frieza to eliminate Gohan.
Frieza obliges and attacks Gohan, tackling him through a mountain. Frieza resumes his attack and Gohan avoids it, powering up to his Ultimate Form and pushes Frieza back with ease. Somewhat taken aback by Gohan's power Frieza, powers up to his Golden Form and re-engages Gohan. While both fighters manage to damage each other, Frieza eventually beats Gohan and knocks him out cold. After Frieza eliminates Frost, Gohan snaps right back up to his feet. Stunned at what happened, everyone looks on when Beerus realizes that Gohan knew Frieza could be trusted. Gohan reveals he was able to tell on his first blocked attack that Frieza wasn't being serious, so he just played along and trusted Frieza knew what he was doing. Frieza confirms this and says that he knew Gohan was strong enough to handle his Golden Form and if he wasn't he would have killed him. Frieza begins to leave with Gohan when Frost attacks Frieza from the stands. However, Zeno erased him on the spot, declaring if Team Universe 6 acts out again all of Universe 6 will be erased. As Champa apologizes, Frieza smiles at Gohan and suggests that they should continue to work together to ensure that their Universe wins to which Gohan smiles at Frieza.
Gohan reunites with Piccolo and witnesses his father's titanic battle againt Jiren. He is the first to give Goku energy for his spirit bomb and shows increasing worry when it still seems like he is losing. Initially devestated when he though his father had been killed by his own attack, Gohan is overjoyed and flabbergasted when Goku rises and becomes stronger than ever, remarking on how his new ability is unlike anything he has ever seen.
Not long afterwards, alongside Piccolo, Gohan protected the weakened Goku from Saonel and Pirina's attack and later on, declined to assist his father against Universe 3, confident that he will bounce back like he always does. During their own battle, Gohan and Piccolo seem to be at a slight disadvantage against the Namekian duo, having to save each other on several occasions. However, as the fight goes on Gohan seems to be gaining more and more ground on them in just his base form and is able to cause major damage to Pirina after knee dropping his arm off forcing him to regenerate, and blocks Sanoel attack to Piccolo with a Masenko.
Their battle is momentarily interrupted due to the nearby fight between Goku and Kefla, which Gohan is very intrigued by. Having witnessed Goku's victory over the merged Saiyan females, Gohan again voices his endless admiration for his father and agrees with Piccolo that he requires assistance. But before they could get close, Saonel and Pirina intercept them, forcing them to resume their earlier battle. During this time, Gohan and Piccolo both sense a change in their Namekian foes. Gohan realizing that they have fused with every single Namekian in Universe 6 powers up to his Ultimate state and says that there vitality and endurance is far to high right now so he tells Piccolo he doesn't need to worry about killing them which is why he is going full power at them and asks Piccolo to charge the Special Beam Cannon to maximum. As Gohan fights both of them Piccolo lets their spirit get the better of him and fires his attack too early as it does nothing to Pirina who responds by hitting them with a Mouth Ki Wave. In his mind Piccolo is met by Kami and Nail who point in front of him and as Piccolo awakens he finds Gohan shielding him and asks Piccolo to do it again and he won't get lazy this time as he will take them seriously now. Gohan goes back in and begins to dominate both Saonel and Pirina. Having them set up now Gohan charges a Super Kamehameha at the same time as his father, who is stuck in a black hole by Universe 2. Saonel is overwhelmed by the blast and as a last resort, Pirina fires another Mouth Wave at Gohan to save themselves. As Saonel pulls himself through Gohan's attack Gohan simply smiles at him as Saonel is pierced clean through his chest by Piccolo's Special Beam Cannon and goes on through Pirina allowing Gohan to blast them out of the arena, eliminating Universe 6.
Gohan is almost knocked out of the ring by Gamisalas, but is saved by Piccolo. Inspired by Master Roshi's advice, the young Saiyan blasts the ring to create a dust cloud to expose his invisible opponent, allowing Piccolo to make swift work of him.
After rejoining with the rest of the remaining team Universe 7, they are attacked by Team Universe 3. As 17 and 18 take care of Viara, Gohan steps in to take on the rest himself, with his plan being to preserve Goku and Vegeta's remaining stamina for Universe 11. Initially, Gohan in his Potential Unleashed state is easily able to read and beat back the Universe 3 warriors however they are ordered to fuse into Koichiarator. After fusing Gohan is still able to keep up with the three of them but has a few close calls. Gohan slips and gets into a strength test with Koichiarator. While initially struggling and being shoved through the ring Gohan is eventually able to overpower him and push him off. As he does so Goku and Vegeta come in and knock him away. Goku apologizes for interrupting but says that thanks to Gohan's efforts his stamina has fully recovered. Vegeta tells Gohan they aren't gonna sit back and watch if they are gonna fuse into one fighter at this stage of the Tournament and together the three of them will make short work of Koichiarator and Goku and Vegeta power up to Super Saiyan Blue as Gohan powers up to maximum and they attack together.
Goku and Vegeta lead the assault pushing back initially but unable to damage Koichiarator. Paparoni mocks them for their efforts and says they lose. Vegeta smiles at him and tells him to think again as Gohan leaps out from behind Vegeta with a fully charged Ultimate Kamehameha. Beerus and the others now realize that Goku and Vegeta didn't have any desire to fight but simply provided a small distraction so Gohan can charge up one decisive attack. While initially able to block it Koichiarator is unable to resist for long and appears to be blown apart by Gohan's attack and seems to be eliminated. After powering down Goku compliments Gohan on doing a great job finishing it as Vegeta smiles at Gohan, proud of his efforts as well as Beerus even gives Gohan a show of respect by calling him by his name instead of "boy" or "kid".
However it is revealed that Universe 3 barely hung onto the edge as Paparoni reveals their trump card, which is to fuse himself with Koichiarator. The monstrosity was initially able to beat the entire Team of Universe 7 around without much effort and after 18 sacrifices herself to save 17 the remaining fighters fire there strongest attacks but are still pushed back. 17 realizes they can't win and charges through the attack with his barrier and shatters the reactor allowing his teammates to finish off Universe 3.
During the final battle, Gohan teams with Android 17 to battle Top. The pair have difficulty facing the Pride Trooper and struggle to find rhythm as teammates. During the battle, #17 tells Gohan that they need to stop trying to coordinate the battle together, as they have never fought with one another before and therefore don't know how to anticipate the needs and movements of one another. They formulate a quick plan, in which #17 will immobilize Top and sacrifice himself, giving Gohan an opportunity to eliminate them both from the competition. The plan almost succeeds, though Top manages to free himself at the last minute. This battle is interrupted, however, when Gohan and #17 take notice of Frieza's battle with Dyspo.
When Beerus reprimands Frieza for getting to close to the edge of the ring, call out to Frieza, Gohan leaves 17 to hold off Top so that he may save Frieza. Frieza reminds Gohan of who he is and asks Gohan what would he do if he betrayed him. An unamused Gohan rebukes Frieza, stating that he will eliminate the undead emperor himself should such a betrayal occur. Frieza is not impressed but agrees to work with Gohan. With his maximum speed, Dyspo is able to dodge Gohan and Frieza's onslaught of attacks however Gohan shocks himself when he realizes he is actually capable of seeing his movements, something Frieza is not able to do. Realizing this, Gohan orders Frieza to trap himself and Dyspo in a Cage of Light so Dyspo can't move so much. Frieza, initially hesitant, relents and agrees. Gohan charges Dyspo and allows himself to be hit so Frieza can trap them. Dyspo tries to reason with Gohan. However, Gohan says he doesn't care and attacks. Dyspo attempts to move but learns he is actually too fast and hits the Cage of Light.
Dyspo engages Gohan in a head to head fight using his speed to attempt to hit Gohan faster however Gohan shockingly is able to keep up with Dyspo's speed and begins to take a clear advantage over him and quickly overwhelms him due to his superior strength and fighting skill. Before Gohan can land the finishing blow, Frieza loses control of his cage and it breaks. Dyspo attempts to use his speed to eliminate Gohan but, due to being able to see his movements, Gohan catches Dyspo in a rear naked choke and orders Frieza to eliminate them both. Frieza praises Gohan's plan, saying he is indeed worthy of being called their leader, and fires a Death Cannon, eliminating both Dyspo and Gohan. After his elimination, 18 tends to Gohan and asks if he's OK. Gohan says he is fine as Piccolo and Master Roshi praise Gohan's plan of taking out Dyspo and Beerus simply smiles in approval at the young saiyan. Goku also voices his pride in his oldest son.

Jaco makes his way to Earth, asking Bulma to gather a few warriors together so that they can become special members of the Galactic Patrol while they deal with the situation regarding Moro and his crew, specific to mention Gohan. When Jaco arrives at The Lookout, he asks where Gohan is only for Krillin to tell him that he is currently attending a college lecture. Later when Piccolo is fighting against Seven-Three, the Namekian is overwhelmed and seemingly defeated but is actually saved by Gohan. Piccolo tells Gohan of Seventhree's ability and that he is currently the strongest being on Earth due to Goku and Vegeta's absence just as Gohan prepares to join the battle.
Gohan drives a punch into Seven-Three's mid-section, sending him hurtling back to the ground, but he quickly retaliates with Piccolo's Hellzone Grenade. Gohan is able to escape the resulting explosion and appears swiftly behind his opponent, where he strikes him hard enough to put him down. Seven-Three uses the Great Namekian technique to grow to an immense size. However, this gives Gohan an advantage in maneuverability, as he is able to dodge all of Seven-Three's attacks and sends him plummeting to the ground.
Seven-Three gets to his feet and begins to use Piccolo's Demon Hand to extend his arms. Gohan goes on the evasive and powers up an Ultimate Kamehameha while flying in and out of the rocks, before preparing to launch it off directly towards Seven-Three's face. Just then, Seven-Three's thirty minutes are up and Piccolo's abilities wear off. Jaco urges Gohan to fire the blast anyway to finish him off while he has the chance. As Gohan launches the Kamehameha, Shimorekka shouts at Seven-Three to use whatever he has in stock, as he taps into Moro's abilities to consume the energy wave with. Jaco explaining that Seven-Three is actually able to switch to other copied abilities, being able to store up to three identities at a time. Seven-Three begins to absorb the energy from the Earths warriors leaving them drained. Taking advantage of the situation Shimorekka and Yunba beat them until they are ordered to return by Saganbo. After they leave, Gohan learns that they will return in two months time.
Two months later, Gohan joins the Dragon Team and Galactic Patrol in preparation for the Galactic Bandit Brigade's assault on Earth. When the convicts scatter across Earth to steal its riches, the defenders of Earth split up but Gohan and Piccolo stay to take on the main threat. An invisible Seven-Three appears from behind the pair and steals their abilities once again. However this time they are prepared and despite first using Piccolo's and then Gohan's abilities, the real Gohan and Piccolo are able to outmatch him by using team work. The two take him down using a Masenko Beam Cannon and Seven-Three resorts to using Moro's energy draining abilities again. Before being able to though, he is attacked by Android 17 who arrives along with Android 18.
When Android 17 almost finishes off Seven-Three, Moro finally appears and Gohan is staggered by his horrifying energy. When Moro notices that Goku and Vegeta are not yet here, Gohan tells him that they will come and until that time, they are in charge of protecting Earth. Saganbo steps forward and asks if he can take care of them as Moro shares some of his power with him. Gohan and the others find themselves greatly overpowered as Saganbo slams Gohan and Android 17's head into the ground. Gohan continues fighting alongside Piccolo but even their best efforts are in vain as he withstands their full power attack. However Goku appears and quickly displays superiority over Saganbo. Gohan apologises to Goku for being unable to defend the Earth from Moro, but Goku praises him for the newfound strength he and Piccolo have gained over the past two months, saying that he hardly recognised him.

"So they caught you off guard right?"
Five years after Goku meets Uub, Gohan is employed by Bulma's company as a researcher and, like Trunks, he rarely trains, though apparently, even in the Earth's peaceful time he has not neglected his training. He now is more concerned about being a good husband and father. He is one of the first to learn about Goku's transformation back into a child thanks to a wish made to the Black Star Dragon Balls by Emperor Pilaf. They all soon learn that if the Black Star Dragon Balls are not collected and brought back to Earth within a year's time, the planet will explode.
Gohan, along with the help of Bulma and Videl, works on the spaceship used for Goku, Trunks, and Goten (later replaced by his daughter Pan) to go hunt the Black Star Dragon Balls. However, Gohan's power is still held in high regard among the Z Fighters. He was originally wiling to go with his father, and Trunks remarks that Gohan is among those on Earth stronger than himself and Pan.

"My mother can overreact some, which is why I didn't say anything earlier. So what have you done with my brother?"
Gohan is later seen again visiting his mother and brother at Capsule Corp. with Videl. They tell Chi-Chi that Goten got into a fight somewhere (with Baby) over at Satan City. Goten returns shortly after, now under the control of Baby. Baby immediately realizes that Gohan is stronger than Goten and could be a little more sufficient body to help him infect Vegeta. Gohan also realizes something is not right with his brother. They two get into a little fight and decide to settle at a remote location. Baby-possessed Goten immediately plays the offensive against Gohan, trying to force him to power up (making it easier for him to takeover Gohan's body). Gohan refuses to do so, realizing that if he uses enough energy, he could hurt Goten. Baby-possessed Goten then powers up to full strength, cornering Gohan. Having no other choice, Gohan powers up to a Super Saiyan. Baby uses this opportunity and easily takes over Gohan's body. Baby tests Gohan's powers by attacking Piccolo in the area.
Now with Gohan under his control, Baby seeks out his true target: Vegeta. Baby-possessed Gohan locates Vegeta and fights an even battle with the Saiyan prince. The fight is soon interrupted by the arrival of Goten, who Baby left an egg implanted inside of, rendering him under his control. With the help of Goten, one of Baby-possessed Gohan's attacks pierces Vegeta's skin, which Baby takes the opportunity to liquefy himself and enter Vegeta's body, gaining control of a more powerful host. However, just like Goten, Gohan has an egg implanted inside of him by Baby, bringing him under control of the Tuffle parasite. Later, when Goku, Pan, and Trunks return home from outer space after collecting the Black Star Dragon Balls (which Dende later gave to Baby so he could wish for Planet Plant to be restored), Gohan and Goten appear at their house and transform into Super Saiyans to immediately fight Goku and Pan. Gohan even promises to kill Pan and fires an energy blast at her. However, Goku blocks the attack and the explosion knocks him and Pan down to the ground, rendering Pan unconscious. This angers Goku and he fights at full power, allowing him to gain the upper hand against the controlled Gohan and Goten. However, before Goku fires his Kamehameha at Gohan and Goten, Mr. Satan and Majin Buu show up and explain what has happened.
After being purified by the Sacred Water by Kibito Kai, Gohan, along with Goten, Trunks, and Pan help restore Goku's Super Saiyan 4 powers. Eventually, Goku manages to defeat Great Ape Baby, forcing the Tuffle parasite to flee from Vegeta's body, returning him back to normal. Baby then tries to escape in a spaceship, but Goku fires a powerful 10x Kamehameha up at the spaceship, blasting it to the sun while Baby was inside and killing the Tuffle for good.
Later, Gohan helps in evacuating the population of Earth to the New Planet Plant before Earth's explosion. However, when Goku teleports back to Earth to get a little boy who was left behind during the evacuation, Piccolo suddenly appears, saves the boy, and gives Goku enough energy to teleport back. However, he chooses to share the same fate as the Earth. Moments before his death, Piccolo has a telepathic farewell conversation with Gohan. He tells him that he chooses to remain behind as his death would cause the Black Star Dragon Balls to be eternally turned to stone.
This way, no wishes from the Black Star Dragon Balls will be made, saving the Earth from a future disaster. Gohan bursts into tears and pleads for Piccolo to come with them, but Piccolo declines and tells him how proud he is of Gohan for how he has matured and the amazing potential he had displayed over the years. With the conversation over, Piccolo says his final goodbye to Gohan, who screams Piccolo's name in devastating sadness as his mentor is blown up along with the Earth. The Earth is restored back to normal and everybody is back on it. Gohan says to Goku that he still misses Piccolo, but his father comforts him and says that he misses Piccolo, too, cheering him up. With that, Goku and Gohan are happy that the Earth and its inhabitants are safe for now.

"We can't let them do this! They've all been beaten before, we can beat them again!"
A year later, Gohan observes the 31st World Martial Arts Tournament with Videl and Krillin while Goku fights in the Junior Division and Pan, Mr. Satan and Majuub compete in the Adult Division.
Some time afterwards, along with the rest of the gang, Gohan fight the villains that escaped from Hell. He mainly battles a revived General Rilldo, saving Pan and Mr. Satan from him. He and General Rilldo have an evenly matched fight before Rilldo unexpectedly uses his Metal Breath to turn Gohan's right arm and left leg into metal. He is nearly killed, but was saved at the last minute by Majuub.
Along with Goten, Trunks, Vegeta, and Majuub, Gohan battles against Super 17, even firing an incredible Kamehameha attack at the Android but it has no effect because Super 17 absorbs it. Gohan is the first to be knocked out. He is saved along with the others by Goku, who, with the help of Android 18, eventually kills Super 17 with a Dragon Fist followed by a Kamehameha.
Shadow Dragon Saga
Main article: Shadow Dragon Saga
"My father was the galaxy's greatest fighter, and he was doing it long before you were even born. You're history!"
Gohan, along with the rest, learns that thanks to the several wishes made to the Dragon Balls over the years, negative energy has overflowed, turning the balls evil, causing seven powerful Shadow Dragons to emerge from them.
Pan and Goku are successful in hunting down and killing most of the dragons, but are no match for the powerful Syn Shenron. Gohan, Trunks, and Goten come to the rescue and revive Goku's energy, while Majuub holds off Syn Shenron. Shenron is, however, relentless at killing Goku, and tries his best to stop the re-powering. He is even successful in landing a devastating blow on Gohan.
Syn's efforts are in vain, though, as the three are able to restore Goku's energy. Goku, now at full power, is more than enough to beat Syn Shenron, but things go for the worse when Syn absorbs all seven Dragon Balls, and transforms into Omega Shenron. Not even Goku is able to comprehend his power.
The situation changes when Vegeta arrives and absorbed Blutz Waves from Bulma's new machine, to help him achieve Super Saiyan 4. Gohan warns Bulma that if given too much, he might lose control and become too powerful and uncontrollable (like Baby). However, Vegeta is successfully able to achieve Super Saiyan 4. It is not enough to stop Omega Shenron though, and Goku and Vegeta realize there's only one option: fusion.
Gohan, Trunks, and Goten hold off Omega Shenron long enough for the fusion to be successful, forming Gogeta. Gogeta is far more powerful than Omega Shenron, but because he failed to take the fight seriously, the fusion expires before he kills Omega Shenron. It now seems that all hope is lost, but Goku attempts to form an Universal Spirit Bomb. The rest battle Omega Shenron, but all are defeated easily by him. They do however, hold out long enough for Goku's attack to be complete and kill Omega Shenron, once and for all. After the final battle with Omega Shenron, he is last seen in one of the flashbacks in the end of Dragon Ball GT.

While held hostage at Garlic Castle, Garlic Jr. is able to sense the power lying dormant within him and vows to make him of his henchmen. Shortly afterwards while in the Courtyard, he ends up eating one of the apples that Nicky was eating, unaware that it has an intoxicating substance (resulting in him entering a state comparable to drunkenness). He eventually wakes up and unknowingly pees on Krillin's head. Eventually, following Goku and Piccolo's battle with Super Garlic Jr, the Makyan opens up a void called the Dead Zone and seeing his father in trouble, Gohan manages to awaken his inner power and send Garlic Jr. into it instead. The exertion causes Gohan to pass out and upon waking up, has no knowledge of what had transpired. Goku decides to not tell Gohan nor tell his mother what had happened so that he can continue to be a normal boy for a little while longer.

However, upon arrival, they ended up witnessing Dr. Kochin using the Dragon Balls to free Dr. Wheelo's Fortress. Gohan and Oolong later ended up attacked by Dr. Wheelo's Bio-Men, but Piccolo ended up saving them, although at the cost of being captured (with Gohan believing him to have been killed). He and Oolong were later confronted by Chi-Chi and Goku regarding the disappearances of Master Roshi and Bulma, where they admitted what they had witnessed.

The Tree of Might

During a camping trip, a forest fire is caused by Turles' probe crashing into the forest. In the mayhem he saves a dragon named Icarus from the blaze, befriending it as a result. Gohan and Krillin then travel around the Earth and gather the Dragon Balls and summon Shenron to have him restore the forest to how it once was, stopping Icarus from attacking Shenron after seeing him. Later when he is bathing outside his house, Icarus re-appears and with help from his father, find a home for it in a nearby cave. When the Tree of Might forms on the Earth, Gohan decides to join the rest on their mission to stop it though his mother refrains him from getting involved.
Nevertheless, Gohan sneaks out and manages to save Chiaotzu from a finishing blow by attacking Rasin. Afterwards, Gohan ended up encountering Turles, and mistook him for Goku. He then was forced to turn into a Great Ape by Turles (the latter using a Power Ball) and then destroying the power ball in order to have Gohan last long enough in Great Ape form to cause immense destruction. However, Gohan was soothed by the presence of Icarus, causing Turles to shoot down Icarus and thus Gohan to attack Turles instead. Gohan was nearly killed by Turles, but Goku arrived and sheared off Gohan's tail to save him from the attack. He then passed out, although not before telling Goku to stop Turles. He later woke up after the Tree of Might was destroyed by Goku (with Turles dying with it) and witnessed alongside Icarus the Earth being restored. Afterwards Gohan and his friends go on another camping trip.

Gohan along with Icarus go to visit Piccolo to put on a song and dance routine for him that he had been practising. He starts to whistle, and without noticing, the whistling seems to cause Piccolo a great deal of pain. After apologizing, both of them sense the presence of a high power level heading toward Earth. Gohan arrives at the landing site where Lord Slug and his minions begin to terrorize the city. He loses his Dragon Ball hat that is picked up by Lord Slug. He starts to battle with them, but is taken down by Medamatcha and Angila.
When Lord Slug's machine brings the planet to a deep freeze, he takes refuge with his mother in their house, but flies off to battle him wearing Piccolo's Namekian suit. He fights well, but as he is outnumbered, Piccolo comes to his aide. Together they duel the villains until Gohan is over taken by Medamatcha's creations, but is saved by Piccolo. During the battle with Lord Slug, Piccolo having Slug's full attention, rips off his own ears and tells Gohan to whistle. As Gohan begins to whistle, he weakens Slug, and gives Piccolo the chance to give his energy to Goku, aiding him in his victory over Lord Slug.
Main article: Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge
Gohan accompanied Goku, Krillin, Oolong, and Icarus on yet another camping trip. However, the camping trip was short lived due to Cooler's Armored Squadron ambushing them. Gohan attempted to aid Krillin, but was himself weakened by Dore grabbing his tail, with Dore also spinning him around by the tail until Goku interfered. While the Armored Squadron attacked Goku, Gohan remained behind to attempt to restore Krillin to consciousness.
Eventually, he flew in an attempt to aid his father, although the then-recently arrived Cooler tried to attack the young half-Saiyan with his Darkness Eye Beam, resulting in Goku taking the blast to save Gohan. They later went into hiding inside of a cave, although they were later trapped inside by the Armored Squadron blasting the landscape. They were later found by the rest of the group by Icarus' scent. Gohan then informed them about Goku's wounded status as well as wanting to know about the survival of the animals in the area. Gohan then, alongside Icarus, travelled to Korin's Tower to get Senzu Beans, also going high into the sky to avoid the Armored Squadron's scouters.
Upon arrival, Gohan attempted to get beans, although he was told to descend the tower because he failed to bring Korin a gift (in the Japanese dub, it was because he only climbed halfway up the tower), although largely because of Yajirobe's interference, he got a bean satchel and a spare bean. Gohan and Icarus then departed back to Goku's location, but were ambushed by the Armored Squadron, with Icarus being shot down and Gohan nearly killed by Dore's Can-Opener Attack, although Piccolo intervened, also holding off the Armored Squadron so Gohan can successfully deliver the Senzu Beans to Goku. He was also pursued by Dore, although Piccolo finished him off with his Chasing Bullet. He eventually arrived at the cave, but the satchel was destroyed by the Armored Squadron commander and sole survivor, Salza. In the Japanese version, Gohan ended up cursing under his breath over the apparent hopelessness of Goku's situation.
Fortunately, the spare bean was still intact, which Gohan feeds to Goku. He then attacked Salza in a rage after witnessing Salza defeat Krillin, but was defeated effortlessly. He passed out, although not before witnessing Goku emerge from the cave completely healed. Gohan was among those in Goku's mind when he transformed into a Super Saiyan again to defeat Cooler. Gohan later met up with his father after Cooler had apparently been killed, and decided to search the rubble to see if Piccolo was present, although they soon discovered it was actually Salza preparing to ambush them. However, Piccolo intervened from a distance with his Special Beam Cannon, finishing him off. Gohan then tried to call out to Piccolo.

Gohan and the others end up surviving an attempted bombing as well as save the other patrons when Android 14 and Android 15 suddenly appear, targeting Goku due to Dr. Gero's desires of revenge against him. Gohan later attempts to aid Goku and Future Trunks in confronting the entities responsible for the attack however, Chi-Chi tries to stop him largely due to his commitment to Summer School. Gohan, however, coldly asks her whether his studies were more important than ensuring Goku survived against the Androids, with Chi-Chi being shocked enough to let Gohan go.
Krillin later accompanied Gohan (the latter being forced to tag along by Chi-Chi) to aid Goku, and eventually tracked him, Future Trunks, Android 14, Android 15, and the newly arrived Android 13 to an arctic area. He later interfered and aided Goku when it was becoming clear that Android 13 was having the upper hand in fighting Goku, and was himself saved by Piccolo. Afterwards, when Android 13 transformed into Super Android 13 via parts from Androids 14 and 15 (who had been destroyed by Future Trunks and Vegeta, respectively), he was attacked by the Super Android after saving Krillin's life. Gohan attempts to aid Goku with the Spirit Bomb by attacking Super Android 13 to distract him long enough to ensure Goku got the energy needed but it taken down in the process. He later ended up hospitalised for the injuries where his mother once again reminds him of going to Summer School.

Trapped in a cage, Gohan yells that he doesn't want any of his friends to dissected for the Big Gete Star.

Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan
Main article: Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan
Gohan attended a Hanimani picnic with Future Trunks, Krillin, Bulma, Vegeta, Master Roshi, and Oolong (with Goku and Chi-Chi not attending due to Chi-Chi wanting to ensure Gohan got into a prestigious school). He later bore witness to Paragus' arrival, and attempted, alongside Krillin and Oolong, to stop a drunk Master Roshi. Upon arriving at New Planet Vegeta, Gohan, alongside Roshi, Oolong, Krillin, and Trunks. Upon witnessing Vegeta meet Broly, Paragus' son, Gohan could not help but express amazement. Gohan later accompanied Krillin and Future Trunks to investigate the city, due to their distrusting Paragus. They then discover that the "city" was nothing but ruins, as well as stumbled upon a slave quarry.
Gohan later interfered on the Shamoian slaves behalf and attacked the slavemaster. Gohan later ended up shocked at Goku's arrival, also learning that Goku himself had been searching for the Legendary Super Saiyan. Gohan, Future Trunks, and Krillin later questioned the Shamoian slaves about the status of the Legendary Super Saiyan, and had confirmation that the Legendary Super Saiyan was indeed real, as he was responsible for the destruction of their homeworld prior to Paragus enslaving them. Later that night, Gohan and Krillin woke up, but ended up witnessing Broly attacking Goku in a fit of rage, also being crushed underneath Goku's (now destroyed) mattress by the irate Saiyan after Broly threw it aside. The next morning, Gohan, alongside Master Roshi, Oolong, Krillin, and Future Trunks brought along several Shamoian slaves before Vegeta to expose Paragus' deception, with the Shamoians also recognizing Broly as the Super Saiyan who destroyed planet Shamo, as well as witnessing Broly's transformation into the Legendary Super Saiyan in a fit of rage. Gohan attempted to prevent Broly from attacking Goku, but Goku ended up pushing him aside due to realizing Broly was far too powerful for Gohan to handle, also being forced to retreat, although not before being hit by one of Broly's Explosive Waves.
Gohan later was shielded by Goku from another blast. Gohan then enters his Super Saiyan state to attack Broly, alongside Goku and Future Trunks. However, Goku later forced Gohan to leave after Broly threatened him, with Goku attempting to hold him off. However, Broly caught up and violently attacked Gohan, eventually resulting in Gohan being snagged by the neck on a beam, nearly breaking it. He was nearly killed by one of Broly's Eraser Cannons, although he was saved by Piccolo, also being fed a Senzu Bean. He then, alongside Future Trunks, attempted to use a combined Masenko against Broly, but it did not phase Broly at all other than destroying the building he was on, and ended up clotheslined by the insane Saiyan while he attacked Piccolo. Gohan later ended up knocked out, but then donated his remaining energy to Goku as a last resort to put down the Legendary Super Saiyan once and for all. After Broly's defeat, Goku and Gohan returned to their house via instant transmission, only to encounter Chi-Chi (who was angry at Gohan and especially Goku for missing out on the Parent Teacher Conference), as well as attempting to help his mom after the latter fainted in exasperation.

"I know your kind! You think you can just waltz in and take our planet! But you forgot one thing; I'm my father's SOOOOOONNNNNN!"
A few months after the Cell Games, Gohan and the other Z-Fighters (including a visiting Future Trunks) proceeded to participate in the Intergalactic World Martial Arts Tournament. Gohan managed to get through the preliminary battles and managed to reach the final round of the tournament, alongside Trunks (after defeating Tien Shinhan), Krillin (who won by default after Piccolo forfeited out of disgust for the former's poor attempts at fighting the latter), and a sumo-wrestler named Doskoi. After moving the tournament to Battle Island 2, the fighters were to encounter and fight the Intergalactic Fighters (really Hercule's students dressed up like aliens) in specially built Battle Zones underneath the island. Gohan and the others are launched to their Battle Zones in rocket-propelled space pods, with Gohan arriving in his Battle Zone: a surreal world resembling a toy chest.
Gohan then encountered his supposed challenger and one of the Galaxy Warriors: Bujin. Bujin used his telekinesis to hurl several building blocks at Gohan, who hopped away from each one. Bujin then telekinetically yanks the hands of a clock and tries to skewer the teenage Saiyan with them, which Gohan disintegrates with an Aura burst. Gohan states that Bujin was trying to kill him, to which Bujin remarks "you have no idea". Bujin then used his powers to warp the area, revealing the "toy chest" was an illusion, and the Battle Zone was actually a forested area. Midway through the fight, Gohan managed to sense a far stronger power take out Future Trunks. Gohan then proceeded to rush from the forest where he was fighting Bujin to the location, an ancient ruined civilization, and discovered the other Galaxy Soldiers, alongside the unconscious bodies of Trunks and Krillin, as well as the group's leader, Bojack. Gohan transformed into Super Saiyan and challenged the warriors, battling them. They broke through the sky, revealing the Victorian-style city Battle Zone where Trunks previously fought and killed Kogu, where the rest of the battle takes place. Gohan is dominated by Bojack and almost gets obliterated by a Full Power Energy Ball but is saved when it is deflected by a Special Beam Cannon from Piccolo. Piccolo gets beaten, with Vegeta and Trunks following suite. Gohan again starts to battle them alone. Outmatched, Gohan is near powerless against the Galaxy Warriors and gets caught in Psycho Thread.
Mr. Satan arrives in a space pod and distracts Bojack, saving Gohan. Moments later Bojack had Gohan in a Bear Hug. While struggling and screaming for help, Goku comes to Gohan's aid by using Instant Transmission to punch Bojack. Goku gives Gohan energy and turns Super Saiyan 2. Gohan evaporates Bujin and Bido, killing them with a simple punch and kick. Gohan punches Bojack, penetrating his abdomen but refuses to be beaten. Bojack uses Galactic Buster and Gohan charges a Kamehameha forming a collision. Gohan kills Bojack ending the battle.

"So, it's my father you're after, right Broly? Why is it that scum like you always want revenge for being put in your place? Well come on, I'll be happy to put you back again!"
Gohan sensed Broly attacking Goten and Trunks, and rushed to stop the trouble. Gohan then arrived and interfered with Broly's Planet Geyser technique against a weakened Goten and Trunks, also discovering Broly's survival. Upon meeting with the boys, he then explained who Broly was, and that Goku had beaten him, although he was later horrified when he discovered that Broly had also fought and injured Videl. Gohan then vowed to "put [Broly] back again" after deducing that Broly most likely wanted revenge against Goku for his earlier defeat, and fought Broly to a stalemate. After launching a blast that destroyed part of the area, Gohan realized that Broly has gotten much stronger since their last encounter (In the Japanese version, he also mentions that Gohan himself had "powered up considerably" since then as well). Broly then shrugged off the attack and emerged back up while threateningly declaring Kakarot's name, but Gohan was later saved by Videl, with Gohan expressing relief at her being alright. Gohan then attempted to stop Broly after he cracked the ground in four with an energy wave by launching into the air, and ended up bracing himself for an apparent attack from the deranged Super Saiyan. However, he then ended up attempting to defend the others when it became apparent that they were the true target, although this failed, leaving Gohan the only one left standing. He then became a Super Saiyan 2 in his rage, with Broly powering up to Legendary Super Saiyan. They then fought, although Gohan was largely getting beaten, eventually being trapped in a backbreaker over the newly formed lava pit. Gohan, however, eventually hit Broly hard enough to temporarily stun him and lured the Saiyan into the magma pit in the hopes of beating him. He succeeded, but was saved by Krillin (whom he mistook for Piccolo due to his wearing Piccolo's attire).
However, the victory was short-lived when Broly revealed that the lava did not affect him at all. Gohan eventually was put in the vengeful Saiyan's mercy, but eventually broke free in anger at Videl's injured status (having used the last of her strength to hurl a crystal at Broly). Gohan then entered a beam struggle with the mad Saiyan, with Goten later participating, but were on the losing end. Gohan and Goten later were apparently spiritually aided by Goku, and eventually succeeded in launching Broly into the sun. Gohan later noticed that Goku disappeared, although he was certain Goku had been present. He later reunited with Videl, but then was forced to flee when it became apparent that she was upset with Gohan for not coming to her aid earlier.

Gohan tries to open the box with his massive strength but to no avail. Hoi advises them to use the Dragon Balls to open the box and Gohan and Videl bring Hoi and his box over to Bulma at Capsule Corporation to see if she can figure anything out. Unable to, Gohan and the others head out to gather the Dragon Balls where they then summon Shenron and ask him to open the box which releases Tapion from confinement.

They execute their Great Saiyaman poses, however Hirudegarn's legs are not impressed; he throws the two heroes to opposite sides of the street, causing Videl to lose her helmet, and Gohan loses his turban and sunglasses. Gohan, with Videl's support, immediately counter-attacks. After Gohan powers up to his Potential Unleashed form, Videl thinks Gohan has won, but Gohan says it isn't over yet. Tapion comes to aid Gohan and Videl by playing a magical tune on his Hero's Flute, weakening Hirudegarn's bottom half, causing it to vanish and leaves the battlefield.
Later, when Hirudegarn's two halves become one, Gohan joins Goku and Goten in engaging the monster but they find themselves far outmatched. During the warrior's first mission in Age 762, like in the original history Gohan attacks Raditz with Leave My Daddy Alone!, however thanks to a Dark Magic power-up Dark Raditz dodges the attack and retaliates with a ki blast to kill Gohan. Fortunately, Gohan is saved by the Future Warrior who joins Goku and Piccolo in fighting Raditz and manages to weaken him enough for Goku and Piccolo to kill him using the Full-Nelson Special Beam Cannon restoring the original history. The Warrior later comes to the aid of Gohan and the other Z Fighters during the battle with the Saibamen who like Raditz have also been empowered by Dark Magic. The Warrior gets separated, leading Tien and Yamcha to be killed by a Saibamen self-destruction. Nappa tries to kill Gohan with his Bomber DX, but like in the original history, Piccolo shields Gohan and dies. The Warrior protects Gohan and Krillin from Nappa until Goku arrives, convincing Gohan and Krillin to leave while they deal with Nappa and Vegeta. The Warrior kills Nappa, though Vegeta resorts to using his Great Ape form after his Galick Gun is overpowered by Goku's x4 Kaio-ken Kamehameha. Goku and the Warrior continue to fight Great Ape Vegeta, until Gohan and Krillin show up to help. While Gohan and the Warrior distract Vegeta, Krillin uses the opportunity to slice Vegeta's tail off with a Destructo-Disc, which is successful. Eventually Vegeta is defeated and the original timeline is restored.
Later on Namek, the Future Warrior aids Gohan, Vegeta, and Krillin during the battle with the Ginyu Force, which is altered when Guldo is sent to take the Namekian Dragon Balls back to the ship by Dark Ginyu. Goku eventually arrives and defeats Recoome. Goku tells Gohan and Krillin to go retrieve the Dragon Balls while he and the Warrior deal with the Ginyu Force. Dark Ginyu tries to steal Goku's body, but Jeice accidentally knocks the Warrior into the Body Change beam, causing Ginyu to switch bodies with the Warrior instead. Realizing the switch, Goku asks the Warrior to use Ginyu's body to sneak into Frieza's Ship to aid Krillin and Gohan while he deals with Ginyu in the Warrior's body. As a result, the Warrior helps Gohan and Krillin who are fighting the combatants lead by Guldo. Gohan realizes the Warrior is not Ginyu and convinces Krillin they are an ally. Together the three defeat Guldo forcing him to retreat. However they are confronted by Ginyu in the Warrior's body and are joined by Goku who chased after Ginyu. The Warrior manages to return to their original body when Ginyu tries to steal Goku's body again. However Guldo returns and uses his telekinesis to paralysis Goku, allowing Ginyu to steal his body. Vegeta joins the battle and kills Guldo, before attacking Ginyu in Goku's body with the Future Warrior. However Dark Ginyu is able to access the full power of Goku's body thanks to Villainous Mode. However his is eventually beaten, and when Vegeta tries to finish him off with Wild Hunt, Ginyu tries to switch bodies, though Goku shields Vegeta, returning to his original body. Ginyu tries again, but Goku throws a Namekian Frog, causing Ginyu to switch bodies with it like in the original history. As a result, Gohan and Krillin use the Dragon Balls to revive Piccolo like in the original history. However the timeline is altered and a history change showing Dark Final Form Frieza killing Vegeta, Piccolo, Krillin, forcing Goku to leave the healing chamber too early to save Gohan (it is unclear if Gohan is killed before Goku arrives or is just knocked out).
The Future Warrior travels through time to prevent this change. Gohan, Krillin, and Vegeta confront first form Frieza, though when he transforms, Frieza transforms directly into his final form. Piccolo soon arrives but is no match for Dark Final Form Frieza. Vegeta is defeated as well. Goku however arrives fully healed and joins the Warrior in combating Dark Frieza, before resorting to the Large Spirit Bomb. Gohan and Krillin later approach Goku and Piccolo after it seems the Spirit Bomb has killed Frieza, however Dark Frieza appears and subdues the Future Warrior, before injuring Piccolo and killing Krillin with Death Psycho Bomb, causing Goku to transform into a Super Saiyan. Frieza attacks Goku with Killer Ball, but he dodges, however one of the stray blasts heads right towards Gohan and Piccolo, though they are saved by the Future Warrior who shields them from the blast before joining Goku in fighting Frieza once more. Goku orders Gohan to leave with Piccolo to avoid anymore close calls. Ultimately the Future Warrior and Goku manage to weaken Frieza though Goku asks the Warrior to leave Frieza to him and Gohan is transported to Earth by Dende's wish to Porunga who is revived just as the Warrior leaves.
During an altered timeline Cell Games in Age 767, Mr. Satan, the Cell Juniors, and Cell are empowered by Villainous Mode defeating most of the Z Fighters. Cell and his two of Cell Juniors then attack Gohan with their own version of the Father-Son Kamehameha which presumably kills him. The Warrior travels back in time to prevent this history and saves Mr. Satan from being killed by Dark Cell by kicking him out of the arena. They continue to protect Mr. Satan until he is knocked unharmed into a nearby mountain by Cell like in the original history. Gohan watches his father fight Cell, while the Future Warrior is forced to fight Mr. Satan who has been empowered by Villainous Mode, allowing Mr. Satan to fly and use ki blasts. Eventually Goku forfeits and announces Gohan as his replacement, while the Warrior continues to fight with Dark Mr. Satan. Gohan refuses to kill Cell like in the original history, while the Future Warrior manages to defeat Mr. Satan freeing him of the Dark Magic. Dark Cell creates Dark Cell Juniors to anger Gohan, forcing the Future Warrior to fight them off. Soon Towa uses her Dark Magic to trigger Gohan's Super Saiyan 2 transformation with Villainous Mode, turning him into Dark Gohan. After defeating the Cell Juniors, the Warrior is called off by Trunks who has found Mira and Towa nearby. It is later revealed that Towa empowered Gohan to Super Saiyan 2, in order to gather more energy from his fight with Cell, before removing the power up, causing Gohan to revert to his Super Saiyan Full Power form, leaving him too weak to defeat Dark Super Perfect Cell. Fortunately, the Warrior returns in time to aid SSJFP Gohan in fighting Cell, weakening him enough for Gohan who manages to reacquire Super Saiyan 2 without Villainous Mode to kill Cell with the Father-Son Kamehameha restoring the original history.
Later after the Future Warrior defeats Mira in Age 774, the Demon God Demigra sends his Mirage to alter history in Age 774 by taking control of Piccolo with Dark Magic, forcing him to attack Goten and Trunks to prevent them from fusing, while Ultimate Gohan fights Super Buu. However Demigra uses his Dark Magic to force Dark Super Buu to use Super Vanishing Ball to destroy the Earth much earlier. The Warrior is sent to prevent this, and manages to restore Piccolo to his senses by giving him a sound beating, causing Demigra's Mirage to flee. This allows the boys to fuse into Gotenks when Super Buu arrives. Eventually Ultimate Gohan arrives and confronts Super Buu alongside the Future Warrior after Gotenks defuses. However Demigra forces Super Buu to transform into Kid Buu, who destroys the Earth killing Gohan, Piccolo, Goten, and Trunks like in the original history. Future Warrior, Vegeta, Mr. Satan, and Dende are saved by Goku's Instant Transmission and transported to the Sacred World of the Kais. Dende leaves with Elder Kai and Kibito Kai to use the Namekian Dragon Balls to restore Earth and its people while Goku, Vegeta, Mr. Satan, and the Future Warrior remain behind to confront Kid Buu. Gohan is revived and contributes to the Super Spirit Bomb with his family and friends, while Mr. Satan convinces the people of Earth to do so as well. Together with Goku, the Warrior gives the Super Spirit Bomb one final push which kills Kid Buu. Mr. Satan then informs Gohan, Videl, and everyone on Earth of Majin Buu's defeat. However the Time Patrol continues to deal with Demigra's attempts to free himself by altering history.
In Age 778, Gohan attends Bulma's birthday party, when Demigra's Mirage interferes when Vegeta manages to save a pudding cup for Beerus by using his power to manipulate Goten and Trunks' ball into knocking the pudding cup out of Beerus' hands leading to a battle between Beerus and the Z Fighters. The Future Warrior arrives to stop Demigra, while Ultimate Gohan joins the battle against Beerus but is soon defeated. He later participates in the Super Saiyan God ritual, allowing Goku to fight Beerus like in the original history. Demigra's plot to control Beerus fails, as Beerus pretends to be effected to lure the Demigra's Mirage out in order to attack. Demigra's Mirage is defeated by Beerus and the Future Warrior, though it survives due to its intangibly. Demigra later has his Mirage to revive Frieza, Cell, and Kid Buu in Age 778.
After they are defeated by Goku and the Warrior, it is revealed that Demigra used his magic to take control of Vegeta, Ultimate Gohan, and Gotenks. While under the Demon God's control, Ultimate Gohan is granted Villainous Mode. Gohan however manages to mentally resist the transformation somewhat though his physical body continues to fight during Demigra's control. Goku and the Warrior manage to defeat Gohan and the others freeing them of Demigra's control, however Demigra is able to free himself from the Crack of Time and attacks Toki Toki City. Goku and the Time Patrol manage to stop Demigra, who resorts to trying to destroy the Time Vault to erase history and the universe while he rides out its destruction safely in the Crack of Time, though the Future Warrior manages to follow him and frees Goku to stop Demigra's attack from destroying history. In the game's secret ending, spiritual images of Gohan, Goku, Piccolo, Vegeta, and Krillin appear to the Future Warrior, whom they provide energy and spiritual assistance to allowing the Future Warrior to destroy Giant Demon God Demigra with the Z-Spirit Kamehameha. Chronoa later reveals that their appearance in the Crack of Time was likely the result of the nature of the Crack of Time itself.
As part of the Legendary Super Saiyan Saga, the Future Warrior is sent to Natade Village in Age 774 to aid Videl, Goten, and Trunks against Dark Broly after he is empowered by Demigra's Wormhole which Demigra had set up before his death. The Warrior manages to hold off Broly, long enough for Gohan to arrive and together they defeat Broly though Broly is saved from death by the Wormhole which transports him to Dying Namek in Age 762, though he is ultimately defeated by the Warrior, a time-displaced Bardock, and Vegeta from that period after being transported to Earth by Dende's wish to Porunga. Xeno Trunks returns Broly to his proper timeline.
In Toki Toki City in Age 850, Gohan and Videl mentor members of the Time Patrol together as a team and offer to train the Future Warrior, though most of the skills they teach are Videl's, though Gohan does teach the Warrior his Ki Blast Cannon skill.
Additionally, Teen Gohan appears in Toki Toki City to ask someone to aid him and the other Z Fighters to train, leading to a parallel quest. If the Warrior defeats both Super Saiyan Vegeta and Super Saiyan Full Power Goku before defeating Super Saiyan Full Power Gohan after he powers up, then an Ultimate Finish is triggered in which Gohan revives and is empowered by Villainous Mode forcing them to defeat him to return Gohan to normal.

The 2nd Future Warrior is ordered to sneak away, leaving Gohan and the others to combat Nappa. The Warrior later learns that the other ki was Turles who prevents Goku from reaching the battlefield. However the original Future Warrior is sent to aid Goku and the 2nd Future Warrior by Xeno Trunks, forcing Turles to retreat with the original Future Warrior in hot pursuit. Goku and the second Future Warrior return to the battlefield just in time to save Gohan and Krillin from being killed. Gohan and Krillin leave, with the Warrior and Goku taking on Nappa and Vegeta. Vegeta uses a Power Ball to transform himself and Nappa into Great Apes. The Warrior defeats Great Ape Nappa. Krillin tells Gohan to flee with Dende while he and the Warrior hold off Zarbon and Dodoria. However Zarbon sends Dodoria to chase after them, leaving Krillin and the Warrior to fight Zarbon. Krillin manages to flee while Zarbon is distracted. Fortunately, Vegeta attacks Dodoria like in the original history, allowing Gohan and Dende to flee to safety. The Warrior however is forced to contend with Lord Slug who attacks them for interfering, though he is chased off by Xeno Trunks, allowing the Future Warrior to aid Vegeta against Dark Dodoria, who is killed by Vegeta restoring the original timeline.
- The Ginyu Force Strikes Saga
In another altered history, Ginyu in Vegeta's body poses with Jeice in front of a bewildered Gohan and Krillin. The 2nd Future Warrior is sent back to aid Gohan, Krillin, and Vegeta against Dark Guldo and Dark Recoome, after they are ordered by Dark Ginyu to defeat them while he takes the Namekian Dragon Balls back to the ship. The Warrior manages to defeat Dark Guldo and knocks down Dark Recoome, however he recovers and is about to kill them with Ultra Fighting Bomber when he is knocked out by Goku. Goku tells Gohan and Krillin to go after the Dragon Balls while he, Vegeta, and the Future Warrior deal with the Ginyu Force, however Vegeta tricks Goku and leaves. Soon Turles arrives and gives Jeice and Burter Demon Realm-enhanced Fruit of the Tree of Might that had been created by Towa. They manage to defeat Dark Burter. However Dark Ginyu steals Xeno Trunks' body while he was following Ginyu in the hopes it would lead to Towa and Mira, forcing the Warrior and Goku to combat Ginyu in Trunks' body and Jeice. Eventually Trunks returns to his original body and Turles aids Ginyu in stealing Goku's body. Eventually Goku manages to return to his original body and stops Ginyu from stealing the Warrior's body with a Namekian Frog. Due to Ginyu's absence Gohan and Krillin manage to collect the Namekian Dragon Balls without interference.
- The Galactic Emperor Saga
However while the Future Warrior is aiding Nail against Dark 1st Form Frieza, Turles attacks Krillin and Gohan to steal the Namekian Dragon Balls so he can wish for immortality so he can defeat Goku, Mira, and Frieza to rule the Universe, only to be stopped by Slug who reveals he desires the same thing for himself. Chronoa has the Warrior return to the Time Nest to travel back further in time after aiding Nail in holding off Frieza. As a result, the Warrior arrives to aid Gohan and Krillin in retrieving the Dragon Balls, forcing Turles and Slug to eat the enhanced Fruit of the Tree of Might empowering them with Villainous Mode. Turles tries to convince Gohan to join him like he had when he attacked Earth in his alternate timeline, but decides against it stating he'd have to be pretty desperate to recruit Kakarrot's brat. Eventually the Warrior convinces Gohan to take the Dragon Balls and flee with Krillin. Gohan is reluctant at first, but Krillin tells him to there are times when they must trust their allies. Gohan thanks the Warrior for there help before leaving. While the Warrior and Xeno Trunks deal with Supervillain Mode Turles and Supervillain Mode Slug, Gohan and Krillin meet up with Dende, and use the Namekian Dragon Balls to revive Piccolo and transport him to Namek before Guru dies and they are confronted by Frieza. Turles and Slug are defeated, with Xeno Trunks telling the Warrior to go aid Gohan and the others against Frieza while he joins his partner the original Future Warrior in chasing after Mira. The Warrior arrives just as Frieza transforms into his final form. Piccolo apologizes to Gohan and the others for wasting not being strong enough to stop Frieza despite all their efforts to revive him. Vegeta having been healed by Dende after being injured by Krillin steps up to fight Frieza believing he has became a Super Saiyan, but is defeated like in the original history. Eventually Goku arrives and the dying Vegeta tells him to defeat Frieza and avenge their race.
Goku and the Warrior fight Frieza, under Goku resorts to the Large Spirit Bomb, with the 2nd Future Warrior holding off Frieza. After Frieza is seemingly killed, Gohan and Krillin join Goku and Piccolo, only to be attacked by Frieza who injures Piccolo and kills Krillin causing Goku to transform into a Super Saiyan. Goku does not dodge Frieza's Killer Ball and instead takes the attack head on without suffering any damage, thus the 2nd Future Warrior does not have to shield Gohan and Piccolo like the original Future Warrior did in Xenoverse. Goku orders Gohan to flee with Piccolo, while he and the Warrior continue to fight Frieza. After Frieza attacks Namek's core, Cooler appears and reveals that Towa had aided him in traveling through time to prevent his brother from being defeated by Goku. Together the two brothers join forces to confront SSJ Goku and the Future Warrior, though the Warrior manages to defeat Cooler who falls into the remains of the molten core of Namek where he is presumably killed. Frieza notices Porunga who Dende uses to transport everyone to Earth after the Future Warrior leaves to join Xeno Trunks in confronting Mira, who flees after injuring Xeno Trunks, forcing Trunks to order the original Future Warrior to chase after him, while he and the 2nd Future Warrior return to the Time Nest.

Eventually they defeat the remaining Cell Juniors, but suddenly a Wormhole appears connection the altered main timeline with Age 767 of Metal Cooler's timeline during his attack on New Namek, causing an army of Metal Coolers to appear to participate in the Cell Games, which Cell welcomes. Xeno Trunks is ordered by Chronoa to travel through the Wormhole and tells the Warrior to follow after defeating the Metal Coolers. After defeating the Metal Coolers, the Warrior travels through the Wormhole, leaving SSJ2 Gohan to confront Cell on his own. While Xeno Trunks and the Future Warrior are dealing with the Metal Coolers on New Namek, Gohan causes Cell to spit up Android 18, and revert to his Semi-Perfect form, leading to Goku to sacrifice himself to prevent Cell's Self-destruction from destroying the Earth. - A Desperate Future Saga

However Future Gohan refuses to allow Xeno Trunks to accompany him when he tries to join him in combating the Androids, having deduced his fate from Trunks' reaction, causing Future Gohan to go off to his death willingly, after the Future Warrior stops Xeno Trunks from altering his history.

Goku thanks the Warrior for saving the Earth and hopes to repay them someday, he later does when through help from Whis travels through time to aid the Future Warrior during their battle with Final Form Mira in Age ??? during the Warrior from the Demon World Saga.

However, the three soon noticed a dark portal appear in the sky and headed into it to discover why it had appeared.
Super Saiyan Gohan, alongside Super Saiyan 4 Goku, Super Saiyan 4 Vegeta, and Android 18 encountered Super 17 - who had re-appeared somehow. They defeated him, however Darkness Towa appeared and forcefully merged Android 18 into Super 17, causing him to greatly power up. He quickly knocked Gohan to the ground and then began overwhelming Goku and Vegeta. In response Gohan took on his Super Saiyan 4 form and headed back to fight the super android.
Main article: List of Power Levels
Despite his lack of interest in competition and even less like of hurting people, Gohan has shown to be a prodigy whose innate talent and natural growth rate exceeds even his own father. By age 10 (including the time spent in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber) Gohan's power and raw skill was on par with Goku and likewise eclipsed all his allies before unlocking an even greater power that surpassed Goku as well. Much of this seemingly stems from his hybrid heritage as since early childhood, Gohan has shown within him a seemingly limitless dormant power, which only revealed itself when experiencing extreme emotional stress, losing most of his cognitive thought in the process and would just as dramatically drop lower than before afterwards. The earliest occurrence of this hidden power was as an infant when he about to crash into a tree when his stroller was accidentally released, giving him enough power to plow a hole clean through the trunk unscathed. Even by normal Saiyan standards, Gohan's increase of might from fear or anger is exceptionally greater, able to compete against the strongest enemies. During their first fight against Frieza, Vegeta notes that Gohan's potential is greater than what he knows himself. Even Old Kai, a Supreme Kai with the power to perceive and unlock one's hidden potential, was baffled by the sheer vastness of Gohan's inner capacities.
As he got older and continued to train, he gradually became able to access larger portions of his power while retaining conscious control of himself. It was not until he was a young adult he could fully access his true capacities at will. Even afterwards however, Gohan's potential growth was still seemingly limitless as he would still show a mighty increase in power from his rage or desire, as would regularly training. To which, Gohan's natural growth rate is also remarkably high even by Saiyan standards. Despite originally retiring from fighting after getting married, which diminished his overall conditioning significantly, once he begun training again, he quickly returned to peak performance and likewise with only his natural might was able to compete against his foes of god-like might. Both Goku and Vegeta agree that Gohan's potential exceeded either of theirs even after they both obtained Super Saiyan Blue.
- Manga and Anime
As a child during the battle against Raditz, a scared Gohan showed a power level of 710, which surpassed the combined might of Goku and Piccolo at their fullest. When angered, Gohan rose to over 1,370 and seriously hurt his uncle in one attack before his power dropped back down to 1. After training with Piccolo, Gohan became the third strongest fighter of the Z Fighters during the Saiyan invasion, reaching 2,800. When angered, he was able to hurt Nappa with his attacks and hold his own against Vegeta. Later on Namek, when Gohan has his potential unlocked by Guru, it was comparable to Vegeta's power level during his assault on Earth (18,000). Between his repeated healing in battle and his continuous rising anger, Gohan was able to knock the tyrannical Frieza around several times and even cause him some damage in his various forms.
Gohan's power grows even higher during his three-year training for the androids' arrival. Later, Gohan's training under Goku in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber let him attain Super Saiyan form, master its power perfectly, and match his father's might. So unaware of his own growth, he was the only one not in awe of Goku and Perfect Cell's performance, believing his father to be holding back when in fact Goku wasn't. Once Gohan attains Super Saiyan 2, his power vastly exceeds all the other warriors present; he effortlessly killed each of the Cell Juniors, who playfully pummeled the Z Fighters, each with a single blow and likewise casually began torturing Perfect Cell into a battered mess. When Cell re-emerged in his Super Perfect state, despite losing access to his left arm (due to saving Vegeta) and his energy drained by half, Super Saiyan 2 Gohan managed to defeat Cell in the beam struggle when Cell was momentarily distracted by Vegeta's energy blast.
By the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament, due to lack of training, Gohan is weaker than he was during the Cell Games. His Super Saiyan 2 power provided half enough energy to revive Majin Buu. He could still compete against Dabura, though the foe said he could easily defeat Gohan if he wanted to. However, once Gohan unleashed Super Saiyan 2, Darbura chose to instead evade the young warrior's attack on Buu's cocoon. His effort ultimately proved useless as he was quickly defeated and nearly killed by Buu.
His Super Saiyan 2 might let him free the Z Sword and after training with the Z Sword to the point he could wield it effortlessly. After freeing Old Kai from the Z Sword, Gohan has his potential unlocked further by the Old Kai, vastly surpassing his previous limits without transforming. Trunks and Goten even admit that Ultimate Gohan is stronger than Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks. Against Super Buu with Gotenks and Piccolo's absorbed might, Gohan proved able to still compete in raw power, holding his own for a period before being worn down by Majin Buu's superior combat skill and cunning of Piccolo.
In the God of Destruction Beerus Saga of Dragon Ball Super, Potential Unleashed Gohan was nowhere near able to defeat Beerus, who nonchalantly knocked Gohan aside. By the Golden Frieza Saga, Gohan's lack of training for so long left him unable to utilize his full potential and difficult to stay transformed for long. However, Tagoma noted that Gohan is still much stronger than Piccolo. When Ginyu takes Tagoma's body and unlocks its full power, while initially overpowered, Gohan compensates with Super Saiyan to knock Ginyu down with two blows, though the captain recovers quickly and insists that he was merely caught off guard. Ultimately, Super Saiyan Gohan proved no match for the strengthened First Form Frieza, who defeated him with casual finger blasts, although Gohan was caught off guard by Frieza's first finger beam and was relatively unable to defend himself from the finger beams that followed. However, when Gohan's anger unleashed a power as Super Saiyan from Piccolo's death, it proved large enough that Goku could sense his ki from Beerus' Planet.
In the Universe 6 Saga, while selecting members of Beerus' team for his competition with Champa, Vegeta suggests that they place Gohan in their team. Despite this and having begun reconditioning since Frieza's attack, Gohan ultimately declined the offer as he had an important business meeting. During the "Future" Trunks Saga, while fully reconditioned, when Future Trunks encounters Gohan, he notes that he could barely sense his power, implying that Gohan's passive nature could suppress his power greatly. During the baseball game between Universe 6 and Universe 7, Gohan managed to catch a godly ki enhanced baseball thrown from Super Saiyan Blue Goku barehanded. Despite the impact leveling the field, Gohan emerged basically unharmed, impressing Champa. Later while battling Watagash, Gohan completely overwhelmed him when he possessed a bank robber. When Watagash possessed Barry Kahn, while overpowered in base form by the possessed foe, once ready, Gohan effortlessly dominated him. When Watagash powered-up into a giant form, Gohan was quickly dominated and knocked out cold. Once recovering and using Super Saiyan, Gohan finally defeated Watagash. Later, at the request of Chi-Chi and Goten, Gohan proved himself able to fight on par with his father in a sparing match in both base form and as Super Saiyans, the latter of which Gohan was able to land some solid blows.
By the Universe Survival Saga, in the anime, while Gohan was much stronger than before, his fighting instincts were still rusty. During the Zeno Expo, he fought on par with Lavender, one of the three strongest fighters in Universe 9. While blind, Gohan's sense of hearing and touch detected Lavender and overwhelmed him. When Lavender flew to better hide his movements, Gohan used Super Saiyan's aura as a radar to track Lavender as the foe made contact with his ki. Even while poison was rotting his body, Super Saiyan Gohan still equaled Lavender, fighting through the anguish to score a double-KO. Later, as Piccolo used the remaining time before the tournament to reawaken Gohan's warriors heart. Gohan initially struggling to keep up with Piccolo even at Super Saiyan 2. Piccolo's guidance ultimately lets Gohan fully reawaken his true power and enter his Potential Unleashed state. Upon doing so, Gohan quickly overwhelms Piccolo without transforming, although he still has a tendency to let his guard down, allowing weaker blasts to cause harm.
After Piccolo deemed Gohan's training as complete, Ultimate Gohan tested his progress against his father. In base form he fought on par with base Goku and easily handled Tien with no issue. With Potential Unleashed against Super Saiyan 2 Goku, while Goku initially had the upper hand, Gohan soon began to overpower Goku. Against Super Saiyan Blue Goku, Gohan unleashed his full power, pressuring Goku enough with such solid blows to make his father unleash his Kaio-Ken. While quickly overwhelmed by Goku's Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-Ken, Gohan's drive let him nearly land one final blow before fainting. In the manga, Vegeta noted that Gohan's full fighting instincts would make him extremely useful. To which, once Vegeta saw Gohan after finishing his reconditioning with Piccolo, Vegeta notes that he is unrecognizable from before, pleased with the results.
During the Tournament of Power, in the manga, Ultimate Gohan (who was not using his full power) fended off the unified assault from the entire Trio of Danger with some difficulty. He showed deceptive leaping ability against Roselle, reaching the flying foe from high above to aid Piccolo. In the anime, Gohan effortlessly deflected Dium's Fire Breath. While Gohan's punches did not damage Botamo, he took advantage as his punches lifted Botamo in the air, pushing Botamo to the edge and knocked him out the arena with a Kamehameha. Against Obni's secret feint technique, Potential Unleashed Gohan was able to endure the foe's attacks and counter, outlasting Obuni to eliminate the tired foe and emerged completely fine. Against Jimizu, base Gohan was overwhelmed by Jimizu's professional use of Instant Transmission, although Frieza notes Gohan would easily handled the Yardat if he hadn't stubbornly refused to use Super Saiyan. Base Gohan was able to compete against Final Form Frieza, who had grown even stronger than their last encounter, showing Gohan's increase in power. With Potential Unleashed, Gohan pressured Final Form Frieza and briefly hold his own against Golden Frieza. However, Frieza and Gohan were merely acting so Frost would let his guard down. Against Saonel and Pirina, Gohan competed evenly against the two mighty Universe 6 Namekians alongside Piccolo. After Namekians foes fully adjusted to their accumulated power from their countless fellow Namekians while initially pressured by them, Potential Unleashed Gohan fended off the duo, holding his ground long enough for Piccolo to aid him in eliminating the two foes with a Kamehameha.
Against Universe 3's modified warriors, Potential Unleashed Gohan fended off Bollarator, Koitsukai, and Panchia, adapting to their attack patterns and overwhelmed them enough to force their merger into Koichiarator. Despite Goku and Vegeta's aid against this new merged foe, neither side was able to push back the other. However, during his fight against Vegeta, Goku's words were able to reach Gohan enough to regain some of his rational thought and focus on his real enemy. Main article: Unlock Potential
Unlock Potential as a state of self-enhancement to focus he full extent of their current capacities. Gohan acquired it while on Planet Namek from Guru, who noted that Gohan's capacities were by far the greatest he had ever seen. This awakening made Gohan's power increase tens of fold, making him equal to Vegeta's strength when the latter appeared on Earth. This, however, only appeared to release his initial potential as still only through moments of extreme emotion could he manifest all of his power.
- Super Saiyan
Main article: Super Saiyan
Gohan became a Super Saiyan at nine years of age (ten if including the months spent in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber), during the intense training he endured with his father to help him ascend. At the time, Gohan was the youngest to appear as a Super Saiyan until the appearance of his brother, Goten, who accesses the state effortlessly at seven years old. In this state, his capacities are increased either 10 fold or 50 fold. In this state, his musculature grows more defined, while his eyes become sterner and green, and his hair turns blond while standing up more with no loose strands. His energy is manifested as a golden aura. After Gohan had his potential unlocked by Old Kai, Gohan would rarely use this or any higher form, due his base state's power already being well-beyond the previous limits that Super Saiyan alone would provide. However, doing so still increases his power as proportionally as previously.
During Gohan's first appearance as a superhero, he used this form to lessen chances of people recognizing him. He became known as the Gold Fighter by the residents of Satan City, until he adopted a new gimmick of Great Saiyaman. Later, Gohan uses this form again during the return of Frieza to defeat Ginyu in Tagoma's body (in the anime while defeating Shisami in the manga/movie) to compensate for his lack of training in recent years, letting him access virtually his previously level of power.
Super Saiyan Gohan was initially going to make his debut appearance in Dragon Ball Z: Super Saiya Densetsu prior to his first appearance in the manga. He was cut from the game but can still be found in-game files.

Main article: Super Saiyan Full Power
Gohan is one of the first to gain full mastery over Super Saiyan. After Goku noted the inherit weakness of transforming, a reduction in stamina and ki, Gohan learned to perfect this form with his father. By working to remain transformed for extended periods of time, Gohan and his father gradually learned to overcome the transformation's drawback to feel as natural in this form as their base state. This mastery of Super Saiyan enables full control over the energy output and consumption, completely diminishing strain on the body, even while constantly maintaining maximum power for. It also has causes no affect to Gohan's emotional nature and subsequently gives of a pure energy that attracts wildlife.
During Frieza's revenge, despite still able to access Super Saiyan, reduction in performance from lack of training left Gohan only able to maintain Super Saiyan at its base level and only for brief periods of time. Despite his decline in conditioning and stamina, his power proved great enough in this form to signal Goku from Beerus' planet. Later, he retrained with Piccolo to become properly conditioned again and use this form as freely as ever. The power was shown off more during his battle with Lavender, even while blind Gohan is able to use the ki he gives off like a radar, allowing Gohan to fight and overwhelm Lavender in this state, even while dying and his body rotting from poison.
- Super Saiyan 2
Main article: Super Saiyan 2
Gohan was the first and the youngest to reach Super Saiyan 2, achieving it at the age of 9. This occurred when a larger portion of his dormant power was awakened in rage from Perfect Cell killing the peaceful Android 16 (though in an anime-only flashback, Gohan had already instinctively stumbled upon it while training with Goku in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber) While in this form, Gohan's muscle mass increases slightly and hair stands straight up and spikier with the exception of one lock that hangs down. Also, his aura is surrounded by repeated flashes of blue electricity. Originally, so new this this massive boost of power, it warped Gohan's attitude, giving him an almost sadistic sense of mind as he wanted to make Cell suffer for his evil actions, whereas before Gohan was a pacifist to a fault who didn't want to hurt the villainous Cell.
As an adult during, despite his lack of increased might since defeating Cell, Gohan's Super Saiyan 2 power left Shin and Kibito in awe at the sight. His power also proved able to push Majin Buu's resurrection over half way. Later, Super Saiyan 2 allowed Gohan to free the Z Sword from its stand and lift it when all Supreme Kais failed before him. After training with the Z Sword, Shin believes Super Saiyan 2 Gohan can beat Majin Buu.
In Dragon Ball Xenoverse, Towa's dark magic awakens Gohan's Super Saiyan 2 power instead, thus making Gohan slowly start to become corrupted. This is most noticed by Gohan letting out an evil laugh after saying he has to make Cell suffer. Goku takes notice and even Trunks notices that Gohan's energy is different. Gohan returns to normal, after Towa and Mira are both driven off.
- Great Saiyaman
The Great Saiyaman (グレートサイヤマン Gurēto Saiyaman) is Gohan's transformation alter ego and an attempt to hide his true identity from his classmates when he attended school in Satan City. The Great Saiyaman was first born when Gohan transformed himself into a Super Saiyan in order to disguise himself as he fought some bank robbers on the morning on his first day to school. However, his classmates (and in particular, Videl) began to note strange similarities between himself and the mysterious "Gold Fighter" (as they described his Super Saiyan form). Concerned that his identity might be figured out, but wanting to protect the city from random crime, he approached Bulma and asked her if she could invent a device that could instantly change his appearance. With his new costume ready and easily accessible with the press of a button, he could now protect the city without his identity being easily discovered. When Gohan becomes a Super Saiyan as Great Saiyaman, he is referred to as "Super Great Saiyaman".
Despite the new disguise and protection of his identity being discovered, the Great Saiyaman identity still did not ensure Gohan's identity from being safe. Juggling between his school and superhero life proved to be difficult, and his classmates and teachers noticed that he was gone for a long period of time when he asked for bathroom breaks. Also, Videl proved to be a thorn in Gohan's side, as she was both reluctant to accept assistance from him and most importantly wanted to discover his true identity. At one time, the Great Saiyaman's true identity was in jeopardy of being discovered when he changed from being the Great Saiyaman to his normal form and noticed that his classmate Angela was standing in front of him during his change; however, he was saved when she revealed that she did not have her contact lenses on at that time and could not see anything, and that her big secret about Gohan was the fact that he wears teddy bear underwear. Gohan's luck ran out when Videl eventually discovered his true identity, agreeing to keep it a secretly only if he agreed to enter the World Martial Arts Tournament and to teach her how to fly, to which he reluctantly agreed. After the demise of Kid Buu, Gohan continued to fight crime as the Great Saiyaman alongside Videl, who now had the identity of Great Saiyaman 2; nonetheless, he eventually retired from heroics to become a scholar.
All Great Saiyaman costumes were made by Bulma. The costume initially consists of a green tunic, black tights, white gloves and boots similar to those used in Battle Armor uniform, a red cape, and an orange-and-black helmet with a visor. Because the rules of the World Martial Arts Tournament forbid any type of armor, Gohan swapped out the helmet in favor of a white bandana and sunglasses, similar to the hero of the 1960s TV show Kaiketsu Harimao. He maintained the sunglasses and bandana look for the Saiyaman identity after the defeat of Kid Buu, and subsequently abandoned the red cape. In Dragon Ball Super, Gohan went back to wearing his helmet and cape again. The name "Saiyaman" is a reference to Gohan's Saiyan heritage. He thought up the name on the spot while confronting two youths who were speeding in a car, and was easily offended when they laughed at his name. Later, the name was frequently mistaken for others, such as the "Great Soyman" or the "Great Singing man", which further aggravated Gohan however over the years this issue has resolved itself as Great Saiyaman is now known worldwide as a superhero. He was also noted for his comical poses (comparable to or even more ridiculous than the poses of the Ginyu Force) he would perform when introducing himself, and was generally written off as hilarious or weird. Nonetheless, he was still a respected hero within Satan City. While in this disguise, Gohan still uses his energy-based techniques. Recently, Gohan has begun to use other attacks and transformations as well during his battles with Watagash. He adopted an orange finger beam he calls the Great Saiyaman Beam. He also begun to use his Super Saiyan form as well if situations called for it, opting to go with what the film director called it his "Super Great Saiyaman" form.

Old Kai uses this ability to bring out the full extent of Gohan's dormant capacities. Although technically this ability is not exclusive to Gohan alone as the ceremony can be used to unlock anyone's sleeping powers, his was unusual in the amount of time it took to unlock due to his amazing potential.
As Old Kai explained, Gohan's manifested potential is so great, simply focusing it pushed his abilities well-beyond what his Super Saiyan forms can normally do. At the same time, once accessing his Unlocked power, Gohan's subtle differences are present to his appearances, including more pronounced facial features including sterner eyes, and is able to manifest a large white aura. Despite this ability giving Gohan constant access to his most developed capacities, he still requires regular training to properly access this state and thus becomes weaker over time with lack of training like any other.
- Potential Unleashed
Main article: Potential Unleashed
In addition to Old Kai's Unlock Ability granting Gohan full access to all his developed capacities, Gohan is capable of pushing his power well-past those levels via his Potential Unleashed state. This power-up is when the full extent of his dormant capacities are released. This power up was achieved by a special ceremony performed by Old Kai. This state looks identical to his base state, but with the addition of a lock of hair hanging down over his forehead in the anime. Gohan is also referred to as Ultimate Gohan (アルティメット悟飯 Arutimetto Gohan) in this state. He is also known as Mightiest Warrior and Strongest Warrior in this state.
With Potential Unleashed, he could match the raw power of Super Buu (Gotenks absorbed). In the Dragon Ball Super anime, after Gohan resumed training with Piccolo and reached a higher understanding of his powers, his abilities evolved to such a level that he could rival Super Saiyan Blue Goku in a short fight, with him requesting his father further amplify his power via Kaio-Ken, albeit this let Goku defeat Gohan instantly. In the manga with his full power could match Super Saiyan Kefla (who was not at her full potential) - though was noted to be weaker than Goku, with Krillin wondering if Gohan could surpass Goku by devoting himself to training.
Gohan no longer possesses his Potential Unleashed state in Dragon Ball GT.
- Potential Unleashed Super Saiyan
While rarely doing so, Gohan can utilize his Super Saiyan form on top of his Potential Unleashed state. In the original release of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods Gohan transformed into Potential Unleashed Super Saiyan to fight Beerus, though this was removed from the final movie. In the anime, as Gohan noted to Goku, he made a conscious choice to avoid using Super Saiyan forms as he is aiming for a different ultimate form. In the manga, he notes that he chose not to use the Super Saiyan form as he wishes to grow more from his human side.
During the events of the Baby Saga in Dragon Ball GT, Gohan is possessed by Baby, and then later by a regular Tuffle parasite. While under Baby's control he is named Baby Gohan. In this state he becomes part Tuffle and is much more malicious, especially to Goku for being a Saiyan. While retaining all his original memories and individuality, he sees himself no longer as part human or Saiyan, but rather proudly considers himself a Tuffle. This dark influence also causes his energy blasts to become red.
This state of Gohan makes its debut for the first time as a playable character in Dragon Ball Heroes, as both base and Super Saiyan forms.
In Dragon Ball Heroes GDM7, a brain washed Great Ape Gohan was introduced. Great Ape Gohan is featured with purple aura as well as red eyes.

- Possessed by Janemba
In Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai, after travelling into the future, Teen Gohan is consumed by blind rage when taunted by Cell about the mistakes that he made and tainted by Janemba's influence, he transforms into a Super Saiyan 2 and gains a power boost enough to easily destroy Super Perfect Cell (who had previously beaten Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks - though he was messing around - thanks to a Saiyan Power boost). Like anyone else who is overtaken by evil energy, Gohan starts to transform into Janemba and begins to forget his friends and family, however he is freed from Janemba's influence by Goku, who manages to snap him out of his blind rage.
- Super Saiyan 3
Main article: Super Saiyan 3
Gohan attains this form in Dragon Ball Heroes, introduced in the fourth mission of the God Mission series (GDM4). Like his future counterpart, his Super Saiyan 3 form also possesses two hair bangs instead of just one unlike his father. He is also seen using Piccolo's outfit, including his cape, exactly the one he wore during the Cell Games except in a bigger size. In this form, he also attains a new technique called Hyper Masenko Wave, which is a stronger version of the Masenko technique.
This transformation is a result of what would've happened if Gohan continued to train under Piccolo in the years following the Cell Games.

- Super Saiyan 4
Main article: Super Saiyan 4
Gohan achieves this form in Dragon Ball Heroes since the fifth mission of the God Mission series (GDM5). In this form, Gohan's hair grows identically to Goku's and Vegeta's and he has his bang back (although in the same position he has during the Ultimate state). Red fur appears covering the upper part of his body and he wears dyed purple pants with Piccolo's shoes. He also gains a new technique called Ultimate Soaring Dragon Strike, which he punches the opponent and then he launches an uppercut with an image of a dragon hitting the opponent very fast. In this state Gohan's power is overwhelming to the point where Gohan actually loses control of himself at times and can't properly control the power. A full power Kamehameha (which are purple colored in this state) from Gohan requires the full power of Goku's x10 Kamehameha and Vegeta's Final Shine Attack to overpower and not destroy the Earth.

Used by Gohan to fish with like his father taught him after his original tail was removed by Piccolo in Kakarot. Unlike Goku's makeshift tail, the origin of Gohan's is unexplained, as Goku retains his makeshift tail upon returning from Other World.
Appearances in other media
Gohan is used in eye drops commercials and Dragon Ball Z school supply commercials, which is a part of the Dragon Ball series' good influence on education and is one of their reach outs. He has also been used in promotional merchandising at fast-food chain Burger King.
Collectible cards, such as the Dragon Ball Z Collectible Card Game, have featured Gohan frequently, and he also appears in almost every Dragon Ball Z video game.
Gohan also appears in the 2010 live action battle show Dragon Ball Kai: Super Battle Stage, which is loosely based on the 1993 movie Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan.
Video Game Appearances
Gohan is playable in almost every Dragon Ball video game. He appears in the trailers of Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi, seen in the Saiyan and Frieza Sagas of the game.
Alongside Videl, Adult Gohan appears as a Master in both Dragon Ball Xenoverse and Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 whom each of the games' Future Warriors can train under. Gohan & Videl are unique among the masters in both games in that they train the warriors as a team. The skills they teach are ones primarily used by Videl/Great Saiyaman 2 or Great Saiyaman. In Xenoverse 2, Kid Gohan appears as a Master as well and teaches the Future Warrior his skills such as the Masenko.
In the Satan House time rift anomaly in Xenoverse 2, Great Saiyaman 1 & 2 defend Satan City and the Earth as members of the Saiya Squad. They manage to recruit the assistance of Galactic Patrolman Jaco who had become stranded on Earth and needs their help in repairing his spaceship. The Future Warrior can join them in protecting the peace as Great Saiyaman 3 (Saiyanoob in the Funimation dub) allowing them to train with the Jaco and the Saiya Squad. The Saiya Squad fights to defend Earth against the likes of the Ginyu Force, Saibamen, Cell, Super Buu, and Shadow Dragons. The Saiya Squad also help rescue KO'd civilians (who actually undercover Time Patrollers investigating the rift) from Saibamen, retrieve spaceship parts for Jaco, and help Pan retrieve Giru's parts from Planet Tuffle in order to repair him.
If the Warrior is an Earthling, the Saiya Squad will help the Warrior unlock their Power Pole Pro Awoken Skill transformation. After testing the Warrior alongside Great Saiyaman 2, Great Saiyaman reveals he had gotten help from his father, who asked Gohan to give them to the Warrior after hearing about their exploits to aid them in battle.
Additionally, Great Saiyaman 1 & 2 from a Time Fragment timeline appear in the Resort District to enlist the aid of the Time Patrol which unlocks a Parallel Quest.
In Dragon Ball Fusions, after learning how to recruit more teammates from Master Roshi, Tekka's Team can find Teen Gohan (known as Young Gohan in Dragon Ball Fusions) in Satan City. Pan, Goten, and Kid Trunks are surprised to encounter the younger Gohan, who is equally surprised to meet his future daughter, brother, and Kid Goku. Pan finds her father's younger self to be cute. They ask Gohan if he would be willing to join their team, but he explains that he is busy hunting down a mysterious fighter who is draining energy from fighters in the Timespace Tournament, so Tekka's team decide to help him gather enough energy (which is used to break barriers and as currency in the Timespace Rift) to lure out the person responsible. Eventually they find that Meta-Cooler is the one who has been stealing energy and defeat him. After Meta-Cooler's defeat, Teen Gohan joins Tekka's team and appears in the Team's Spaceship (allowing him to be selected as a playable character). Additionally, Adult Gohan and Great Saiyaman appears as well (as separate playable characters). Teen Gohan, Adult Gohan, and Great Saiyaman can also fuse with several different characters via EX-Fusion.
In Dragon Ball FighterZ, Teen and Adult Gohan appear as playable characters though only Adult Gohan appears in the story. Adult Gohan (as a Great Saiyaman) is also an assist character for the DLC character Videl, thus making him one of the two characters who are both assist characters for certain fighters, and playable fighters (the first being Android 17, who is also an assist for Android 18). Gohan has regained the use of his Potential Unleashed state, though he admits he is still rusty and the revived Cell is shown to be disappointed by his lack of power which is made worse by the power suppressing waves though he is still strong enough to be effected. During special conversation between Gohan, Goku, and Piccolo, he worries he might be burden causing Goku to suggest they use Fusion Dance though Piccolo reminds them they'd both need to practice first causing Gohan to admit he was disappointed as he wanted to try the cool Fusion Dance poses to Piccolo's shock who notes to himself that Gohan is definitely Goku's son if he thinks Fusion Dance is cool. Goku suggests they practice fusion after the battle and even wonders what to name their fusion. In another conversation with Good Buu while confronting a Clone Buu, Gohan doubts it was cloned directly from Kid Buu's cells as Kid Buu would have regenerated were that case suggesting it was cloned from Good Buu who's genetic offspring are known to carry Kid Buu's genetic legacy via the Pure Majin form, which all the Clone Buu's possess by default.
In 1993, Gohan placed first in an official Shonen Jump character popularity poll; the closest Dragon Ball character to rank behind him, Goku, took fifth. Due to the popularity of Gohan, other merchandise, such as action figures, video games, and clothing have featured Gohan in Japan and in various countries around the world. In an interview featured in the second Dragon Ball GT Perfect Files, a companion book released in December 1997 by Shueisha's Jump Comics Selection imprint, Masako Nozawa, Gohan's voice actor, stated that her favorite episode voicing Gohan was "Sorry, Robot-san - The Desert of Vanishing Tears", an episode originally cut from the American release of Dragon Ball Z. Saffron Henderson, Gohan's original Ocean Group voice actor, has stated she felt protective of the role and considers it to be one of her favorites.
Gohan ranked first on The Artifice writer Santiago Rashad's list "Top Ten Misused Dragon Ball Characters". Rashad argued that the character's role in the series had suffered from the backlash by fans not wanting him to become the protagonist following his defeat of Cell as he expressed: "He was never accepted by the fans, and thus the show that was meant to be his never became his. His story became the b-plot and he was relegated to being a relief pitcher after being the clutch closer for Cell." Calling Gohan "the guy—for all of the conclusion of the Cell Arc", Rashad mentioned his role in the films, but stressed that "for whatever reason he was never deemed fit for the throne that was all but forced upon him."
IGN's writer, D. F. Smith, liked how during the Cell Games Gohan has more screentime than Goku, and praised his scenes as one the biggest moments from such story arc. Theron Martin from Anime News Network celebrated Gohan's development in the Cell Games as he has grown up and has become stronger.
List of characters killed by Gohan
- When Chapter 196 first ran in Weekly Shōnen Jump, Son Gohan was introduced as three years old. However, this would immediately be contradicted in Chapter 197, where Gohan reintroduces himself to the reader as four years old in the title page. While it is possible that Gohan's introduction as three is simply a mistake on the part of Akira Toriyama, this is unlikely, as in that same chapter, Gohan clearly holds up three fingers when proclaiming his age. His age is nonetheless changed to four in the Tankōbon release of Volume 17, and the anime followed suit, claiming that Gohan was four, and changed the scene so that he holds up four fingers instead.
- The name "Gohan" is a homophone for gohan (御飯), the Japanese word for "cooked rice" which also refers to meals in general, which continues Akira Toriyama's food naming pun diagram. In Mandarin, the reading of 悟飯 is a homophone for 午飯 (wǔfàn), meaning "lunch". As a result, in a similar vein to his father's name, Gohan's name in pinyin/Mandarin is read as "Sun Wufan", which in both Chinese and Japanese literally mean "Grandson Awakened to Rice/Perceiving Rice".
- Gohan's hobbies are reading, fishing, and research.
- Gohan will eat anything.
- Gohan's favorite vehicle is a house wagon.
- Gohan has killed every member of the Spice Boys.
- In the Funimation dub, Gohan was originally intended to be named either Einstein or Archimedes by Chi-Chi. Alternatively, some of Ox-King's name suggestions included "Ox-King Jr.", "Ox-Monkey", "Big Ox", "Oxford", "Ox in the Box", "Ox-Man" and "Johnny Oxseed".
- In the Japanese version, Ox-King's name ideas include "Gyumataro", "Gyumahiko", "Doctor Gyuma", "Gyumanosuke", "Gyumashin", "Gyumantohihi", and "Gyumasuki".
- Gohan's tail is cut off four times in the anime (twice by Piccolo, once by Vegeta, and once by Goku) before it stops growing back. Piccolo removing it for the second time (along with the transformation that accompanied it) was anime-only filler where the space pod Goku flew in, which was in the mountains before being found by a nearby Grandpa Gohan, appears in the middle of a desert. This is considered to be one of the biggest plot holes in Toei's anime series by fans.
- Consecutively, Gohan has stayed transformed the longest as a Super Saiyan/Super Saiyan 2, clocking up a total of 29 episodes. Gohan is also the character who goes through the most character design and costume changes.
- In the anime during the Cell Saga, Gohan has a dream about Cell killing Chi-Chi and Piccolo inside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber; However, he previously stated to his father that he did not know what Cell looked like when Goku asked him to imagine Cell killing all his friends so he can achieve Super Saiyan form for the first time.
- In the English version of Dr. Slump, there is a reference to Gohan's alter ego superhero, Great Saiyaman, in the chapter "Here Comes Arale!" The movie which Senbei Norimaki and Aoi Kimidori see and which was originally titled "Nekotoraman vs. Nekotora-7" (a reference to Ultraman and Ultra Seven) in the Japanese version, and is renamed "Tigerman versus Saiyaman" in the English translation.
- In volume 1 of the Dragon Ball Z manga, Piccolo refers to Raditz as "Raggedy Saiyaman". Saiyaman is what Gohan calls his superhero self.
- Gohan is the only partial Saiyan to be seen with a tail. Akira Toriyama stated that tails on a hybrid Saiyan is a recessive trait. Although, this is likely because Toriyama stated that he simply forgot Saiyans had tails by the time another hybrid Saiyan was born.
- However, Toriyama recently revealed in an interview that he decided to get rid of Saiyan tails as he couldn't figure out how Saiyans would dress themselves with the tails on and these minutia annoyed him to no end. Thus this is presumably one of the reasons why Saiyan hybrids born after Gohan and the pure blood Saiyans of Universe 6, lack tails entirely.
- In both manga (Chapter 426) and anime (Episode 205), Gohan was talking to the audience (breaking the fourth wall) about Krillin letting his hair grow out after the Cell Games.
- Gohan is the first hybrid Saiyan to appear in the series.
- He is also the only hybrid Saiyan to transform into a Super Saiyan 4 in the franchise.
- Like his father, wife, and father-in-law, Gohan is a Martial Arts Champion as he is the true winner of the Cell Games. However unlike them he has never won a tournament officially (as Mr. Satan officially took credit for Gohan's defeat of Cell). Goku won the 23rd World Tournament, while Mr. Satan won the 24th World Tournament after the Cell Games (which is implied to have been won legitimately) as well as countless others (albeit rigged), and Videl is was the first Junior World Champion which she won at the 24th World Tournament which was the first World Tournament to feature a Junior Division.
- In Xenoverse 2, Teen Gohan has special dialog with Bojack where you can hear Adult Gohan's voice instead of Teen Gohan's.
- His green track suit appearance is a likely inspiration for the Pro Hero "Glasses" from One Punch Man.
