"The purpose of striking a pose is not to become like wallpaper--that's why we chant loudly when we pose: to draw attention to our magnificence. I know....I'll just have to raise the stakes a little bit. The best poser gets a candy!"
— "A Legend Revealed"

Ginyu (ギニュー Ginyū), referred to as Captain Ginyu (ギニュー隊長 Ginyū-taichō) by his subordinates, is the strict but loyal captain of the elite mercenary platoon, the eponymous Ginyu Force. Ginyu is an honorable, yet merciless fighter who constantly strikes poses. He possesses the ability to swap bodies.

Captain Ginyu is the main antagonist of the Captain Ginyu Saga and the secondary antagonist of the Frieza Saga. In the anime, he also returns as a supporting antagonist in the Golden Frieza Saga.

Appearance[]

In his most commonly seen body, Captain Ginyu is a tall, purple humanoid alien. The top of his head displays prominent veins, similar to that of a human brain. Two black conical horns protrude from the top sides of his head. Ginyu wears a black variant of the Battle Armor that Frieza's forces wear, with lower side guards, black and white wrist bracers, and the addition of the Ginyu Force insignia on the upper left side of the chest plate. He wears black underwear as his lower body armor. Ginyu is equipped with a green Scouter.

Personality[]

While very arrogant and merciless in battle, Ginyu has displayed a strong sense of honor in combat and prefers fairness in his battles, as shown when he refused to break Goku's neck due to Jeice interfering in their fight, and even threatening to kill Jeice if he did it again. Goku takes note of this and insinuates that Ginyu may not be all bad and even capable of redemption.

Ginyu is shown to care deeply about his teammates, becoming incredibly furious when learning from Jeice that his three other subordinates were defeated and killed. However, he also can be quite harsh to his team members if they fail a mission, as shown when he harshly scolds Jeice for letting Burter and Recoome lose to Goku and (in the FUNimation dub only) running away from the fight. Ginyu is one of the few men who genuinely reveres Frieza.[4] His loyalty is further shown by following any order Frieza gives him. Even after he swapped bodies with a Namekian Frog, despite his long tenure being stuck in this form, he endured without giving up hope due to his belief that one day he would be able to one day serve Frieza again. Presumably, this genuine loyalty is why Ginyu never uses (or attempts to use) his Body Change technique on Frieza. Despite his loyalty to Frieza, however, he nonetheless claimed to Goku that he "doesn't follow the orders of anyone" when the latter told him to surrender upon exposing his true power level of 180,000.

Unlike his comrades, Ginyu is a very calculating and methodical man, preferring a pragmatic approach in battle. He is noted by his subordinates to always research the mission at hand before acting. He is shown to have a very developed understanding of ki and fighting. This is seen when he is the only one of his comrades to recognize that Goku was concealing his true power level and releasing it in short spurts. In the anime, during Goku's fight with Frieza, he notes Frieza's body was spontaneously reacting to Goku's power.

Toyotarō's version of how Ginyu obtained his horned purple body

Like the other members of the Ginyu Force, Ginyu's special powers originated during his childhood.

According to Dragon Ball Z: Super Saiya Densetsu's strategy guide, when Ginyu first learned of his Body Change ability, he swapped bodies with the richest kid in his class, which made him popular with girls but also stupid, and he soon realized that men should compete in terms of strength rather than money.[5] According to this, Ginyu's purple horned body is his original.[5]

According to a drawing by Toyotarou, Ginyu encountered a powerful being of a horned purple species, with whom he switched bodies with, gaining his most well-known body.[6]

Only a few people have seen Ginyu's true form, and Salza is among them. Cooler integrated Ginyu into his Armored Squadron and Salza had to fight him for the leadership of the squadron. Frieza got Ginyu to join his army not long after.[2][7][8]

Captain Ginyu

Captain Ginyu and his comrades are commissioned after Frieza learns that Vegeta is searching for the seven Dragon Balls on Namek and that the Saiyan's Power Level is growing rapidly, quickly surpassing Frieza's personal henchmen, Dodoria and Zarbon. The force spends five days traveling the stars en route to Namek, and upon reaching the planet, Frieza dispatches the team to capture Vegeta, kill his two companions (Krillin and Gohan), and recover the Dragon Balls which have since been stolen by Vegeta. Efficient as they are, the Ginyu Force does not take long to track down their targets and locate all seven Dragon Balls, with the rest of his team showing off their special talents, such as Burter's tremendous speed and Guldo's time freezing. Initially, Captain Ginyu intends to slay Vegeta by himself, but when his subordinates complain that they have not had the opportunity to fight, Ginyu concedes, allowing them to deal with Vegeta and the others while he returns the Dragon Balls to Frieza's Spaceship.

TheGinyuForceDragonBalls

Ginyu with his comrades finding the Dragon Balls

Captain Ginyu transfers the Dragon Balls back to Frieza, using his telekinetic powers to levitate the Dragon Balls, but the two almost instantly discover that they can not activate the artifacts to summon the Eternal Dragon. Remembering one of his previous Namekian victims whose last words told of how Frieza could never make a wish even with the seven Dragon Balls gathered, Frieza deduces that there must be a secret Namekian Language custom used to activate them. The tyrant uses his scouter to investigate the vicinity for Namekians, finding three of them in an area that his forces left untouched (Nail, Guru, and Dende). Captain Ginyu volunteers to force the secret out of them, but Frieza declines in favor of handling the task himself. In the meantime, Captain Ginyu is assigned to watch over the seven Dragon Balls.

CaptainGinyuJeiceEp68

Captain Ginyu wants to face Goku after Jeice alerts him of the threat

While guarding the Dragon Balls, Captain Ginyu is joined by one of his subordinates, a panicked, frantic Jeice, who confirms that a powerful warrior has arrived on Namek, and their comrades, Recoome, Burter, and Guldo, have been defeated (and in Guldo's case, killed). Captain Ginyu scolds Jeice for running away from the battle (in the original dub he chastises him for cowardice) and advises against Jeice's proposal to warn Frieza, as he does not want this to compromise his reputation. Ginyu decides to confront this new fighter called Goku himself, leaving his subordinates in the care of the Dragon Balls (in the manga, Jeice is left to hide the balls, while in the anime, they are left to be buried by Frieza's low-class soldiers).

CaptainGinyuBodyChangeEp71

Ginyu performing the Body Change technique

Upon convening with Goku, Captain Ginyu determines that the Saiyan is capable of masking his true power level (as Ginyu is the only member of the Ginyu Force able to do so), speculating his true strength to be somewhere around 60,000 (in contrast to what has appeared on the Ginyu Force's scouters as a mere 5,000). The commander's first advance on Goku is only amplified when Vegeta escapes the scene in flight, in spite of the alliance he and Goku had formed specially for the encounter. This distraction leaves Goku open for an elbow bash to the face. Goku and Ginyu continue to do battle, with Ginyu eventually realizing his shortcomings against the Saiyan from Earth. Ginyu started to believe that Goku might even be a Super Saiyan. However, he disproved this as no Saiyan he ever encountered or heard about was as sympathetic as Goku. As Ginyu and Goku continue their battle, both Ginyu and Goku manage to trick each other, using certain tricks and stealth attacks to land hits, as they seem evenly matched. Despite managing to capture Goku in a full nelson, Ginyu releases him upon deducing that he was only able to take hold of Goku as a result of Jeice's interference, blasting Goku with a beam, which distracted him. For this, he admonishes Jeice, even threatening to kill him if he intrudes on the conflict once more. This act makes him seem to be an honorable fighter.

GohanAndKrillinVsCaptainGinyu

Ginyu in Goku's body attacked by Gohan

Captain Ginyu realizes Goku is not using his full power in their fight and requests Goku to reveal his full power, which he does, shocking Ginyu and Jeice, as Goku's power was 180,000, while Ginyu's was 120,000. Accepting that he is at odds with Goku, Ginyu's next action is a startling one. He spontaneously stabs his chest, before revealing his true plot: resorting to his ability to exchange bodies in an attempt to level with Goku, showing the reason why he stabbed his old body; so that Goku cannot fight back and will eventually die of blood loss. The body change is a success, but Captain Ginyu fails to make the most of Goku's shell's power level of 180,000, stopping short at just 23,000. Only in the English dub, Jeice says that the power level was actually growing weaker.

VegetaVsCaptainGinyuEp74

Ginyu is pummeled by a relentless Vegeta

With this, he is promptly forced into a losing battle against Gohan and Krillin, while Vegeta battles Jeice. However, midway through the battle, he begins to learn how to draw out Goku's full power and begins to fight back and win against Gohan and Krillin, even when Goku (having also learned how to utilize Ginyu's body's power) tries to come to their assistance; Ginyu easily defeats all three of them. It is not until Vegeta, having finished off Jeice, appears and pummels Ginyu with his new maximum power that they survive. Beaten into the ground, Ginyu attempts switching bodies with Vegeta twice. The first time, Goku, still rendered within Ginyu's body, interferes with the attack. The second time, the further injured Goku successfully tosses a Namekian Frog within the trajectory of the Body Change's Energy Wave, thus rendering Captain Ginyu's soul trapped within the shell of the frog. Unable to pronounce the technique, he is unable to transfer himself to a new body. Likewise, Ginyu's original body is inhabited by the Frog's soul, and in a similar manner, can only speak in croaks. Though Vegeta has the opportunity to finish the captain off after Ginyu switches bodies with the frog, Vegeta opts not to kill him so as not to get "toad guts" all over his "nice clean boots" (in the manga and Kai, Vegeta lets him live after Goku mentions that he is no longer a threat, and states that the life he has ahead of him is torture enough).

CaptainGinyuBulmaFunnyMomment

Ginyu and Bulma share a moment on Namek, after Ginyu accidentally exchanges bodies with a frog

In the manga, Ginyu is never seen or heard from again. In the anime, however, Ginyu continues making subsequent filler appearances as a frog. While Gohan is watching over the Dragon Balls, Ginyu attempts to roll them away.  Gohan soon notices the frog with one of the Dragon Balls.  Ginyu attempts to play it off, but Gohan quickly realizes that he is Ginyu.  His cover blown, Ginyu hops away from Gohan, who laughs at him.  Eventually, Ginyu loses Gohan, but comes across with a pink colored female Namek Frog, who becomes immediately smitten with him. A repulsed and terrifed Ginyu hops away, with the pink frog in hot pursuit.  Off-screen, the female frog manages to catch up to him, and succeeds in having her way with him by giving him a big kiss on the cheek. Sometime later, a traumatized Ginyu, now sporting a giant red lipstck mark on his cheek, witnesses Porunga being summoned from the Dragon Balls.

Later on, he is discovered by Bulma and kept as her companion. After realizing that the frog understands human dialect, Bulma creates a device to translate his croaking into speech, which Ginyu, in turn, uses to betray Bulma with his regained ability to pronounce the Body Change technique. Seizing Bulma's body, Ginyu uses Bulma's air-ski to visit the site of Frieza and Goku's showdown, also attended by Piccolo, Krillin, and Gohan; Bulma takes hold of the air-ski, and despite Ginyu's attempt to lose the frog, Bulma is able to reach her oblivious friends. Captain Ginyu attempted to pose as Bulma and watch the fight between Goku and Frieza, although he lets slip about his true identity when he blurted out cheers directed towards Frieza.

Sensing that he ended up exposing himself, Ginyu wages an attack on the trio, before deciding to switch bodies with the most powerful of the three, Piccolo. Gohan comes to realize that the frog is in actuality Bulma, which leads him to throw Bulma in the path of the wave, reverting Ginyu to the shell of a frog once again, and restoring Bulma to her human body. Bulma and Ginyu are then blown away by the force of one of the blasts from Goku and Frieza's fight. They are eventually blown into a cliff by Goku's Spirit Bomb. Ginyu is eventually used to scout out to see where they are by Bulma, who is still sore about Ginyu's earlier betrayal. By the time Ginyu reports back to Bulma, she notices the immense aura overtaking an island in the vicinity.

After a wish made to Porunga, the Eternal Dragon of Namek, Ginyu is later transported to Earth with all living beings on Namek except Goku and Frieza. Afterward, Ginyu goes on to live among the frogs surrounding Capsule Corporation, apparently becoming the ruler of the pond. He also ends up living in the greenhouse of Bulma's home.[4] It is never revealed what becomes of the frog whose soul is within Ginyu's shell, save for one scene where he hops around the Earth's forest where Porunga evacuates the people of Namek to Earth.

However, he is revived alongside the Earth and its citizens later but is still trapped in his Namekian frog body. It is unknown why he was revived when Dende asked Porunga to only revive good victims. One reason might be because he was an animal at that point and wasn't judged like humans in the afterlife because of that.

Ginyu watches Frieza's revival

Ginyu, still in the body of a frog, sees Sorbet and Tagoma put Frieza's body parts into their containment. Several months later, at the start of Frieza's revenge, Ginyu sneaks into Jaco's ship so he can fly to the battlefield. After many of Frieza's soldiers are defeated and Tagoma is about to engage the Z Fighters in battle, Ginyu climbs out of Jaco's ship. When Tagoma lies on the ground in pain after having been hit by Gotenks, Ginyu appears and approaches him.

Revival Special Fighting Pose

Taking Tagoma's body, Ginyu reclaims his place as Frieza's strongest soldier

Ginyu changes bodies with Tagoma by tricking him into reading the word "Change" that he wrote in the dirt in a foreign language (the symbol that Ginyu draws comes from the same, seemingly only written language, that everyone who is with the Frieza Force appears to know). Ginyu, now with the body of Tagoma, leaving the real Tagoma in the body of a frog, has a brief discussion with Frieza explaining how he's still alive and has always been faithful to the belief that one day he would fight for Frieza once more despite his hardships as a frog. After doing his new pose to commemorate his revival he attacks the Z Fighters on Frieza's orders, decimating them in combat.

In response to Ginyu overwhelming them, Ginyu is challenged by Gohan in a one-on-one fight, but he later transforms because he proved no match for him due to not training. As a Super Saiyan, Gohan manages to knock down Ginyu in two blows, but spares him, saying there is no point in continuing the fight. Frieza steps in and exclaims that he will finish Gohan off in Ginyu's place, blasting him with a barrage of Death Beams. While Frieza is attacking Gohan, Ginyu holds off the other Z Fighters who tried to help him against the tyrant.

Other Dragon Ball stories[]

Supersonic Warriors[]

Main article: Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors Ginyu manages to survive the conflict on Namek in his humanoid form and continues to Earth (alongside Frieza in the first game) in seek of Earth's Dragon Balls. There, he faces and defeats characters such as Krillin, Android 20, Android 18, Super Saiyan Goku, Super Saiyan Gohan, Piccolo, and even the Legendary Super Saiyan Broly. In Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors 2, when Ginyu faces an opponent stronger than him (like Super Saiyan Goku or Future Trunks), he uses the same trick Cui played on Vegeta on Namek, saying to his rival that either Frieza or Cooler are behind them and then escapes in order to keep looking after the Dragon Balls with the Dragon Radar he stole from Krillin. In both games, Ginyu's only wish from the Dragon Balls is to revive his deceased friends and to re-form the Ginyu Force. In the first game, his wish demolishes Frieza's desire for immortality by accident as Frieza gives Ginyu the first wish as a reward for Ginyu's hard work of collecting the balls, thinking the Earth's Dragon Balls grant three wishes like the Namekian Dragon Balls. In the second game, his wish to revive his "allies that were killed on Namek" makes him revive Frieza, Zarbon and Dodoria alongside the Ginyu Force members.

In Frieza's story-mode in Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors, Ginyu appears in front of Frieza after Frieza's victory over Super Saiyan Goku on Namek. Frieza is shocked, as he thought Ginyu was dead. Ginyu excuses himself for failing in his mission of obtaining the Dragon Balls. Frieza is in a good mood after killing Goku and forgives him, and they both escape the dying Planet Namek just before the explosion. On Planet Frieza 79, Frieza gives Ginyu a chance of cleaning his reputation and they both make a journey to Earth for its Dragon Balls. They conquer the planet after killing the Z Fighters and destroying the populated areas on it. Frieza then renames Earth: "Planet Frieza #80". Ginyu finds the Dragon Radar on the West City ruins and starts to look after the balls. After finding four of them, he locates Dr. Gero's secret lab, where Android 20 is keeping the remaining balls in order to lure the two aliens in, believing he will be able to take down Frieza if he absorbs Ginyu's energy. Ginyu's scouter does not detect any person near the balls' location, so he goes in to look if it is a trap. While inside, he is attacked from behind and killed by Android 20. Frieza then meets Android 20 and says that considering Android 20's mechanical way of powering up, Ginyu "never stood a chance".

Even though he is still defeated by the Time Patrol, Towa finds him to be a success (compared to her other experiments).

Xenoverse[]

Main article: Dragon Ball Xenoverse In an altered history of Age 762, Dark Ginyu steals Vegeta's body and attacks Goku with the rest Ginyu Force. While Goku is distracted by the other Ginyu force members, Dark Ginyu uses the Body Change to switch from Vegeta's body to Goku's body. Dark Ginyu then kills Goku in Vegeta's body with a Kamehameha. To avoid this altered history, Future Trunks sends the Future Warrior back to aid Goku, his father, Krillin, and Gohan. While the Future Warrior is fighting with Jeice, Dark Ginyu tries to steal Goku's body with a Body Change but accidentally swaps bodies with the Future Warrior when Jeice accidentally knocks the Warrior in the path of the Body Change. Dark Ginyu becomes angry at Jeice as there is a difference in the potential power between the Warrior and Goku, with Goku's being the greater of the two. Realizing their ally, the Future Warrior, and Dark Ginyu have switched bodies, Goku asks the Future Warrior to use Ginyu's body to infiltrate Frieza's Spaceship to help Krillin and Gohan retrieve the Namekian Dragon Balls believing that Frieza's henchmen will mistake the Warrior for Captain Ginyu due to, the Body Change. Under the orders of Future Trunks, the Warrior agrees to Goku request and leaves Goku alone face Ginyu in the Warrior's body. While fighting Goku alone in the Warrior's body, Dark Ginyu is unable to switch bodies with Goku as he is aware of the technique thanks to Dark Ginyu's Body Change with the Future Warrior. Eventually, Dark Ginyu manages to escape Goku and flies to Frieza's spaceship only to find the Future Warrior, Gohan, and Krillin have successfully retrieved the Namekian Dragon Balls and placed them outside Frieza's ship.

Still in the Warrior's body, Ginyu confronts the trio while a hidden Vegeta watches nearby, and Goku arrives in pursuit of Ginyu in the Warrior's body. In Ginyu's body, the Future Warrior stands up to fight Ginyu in the Warrior's body in the hopes of getting their body back. Still in the Warrior's damaged body, Ginyu tries to steal Goku's body again unleashes another Body Change on Goku, but Future Trunks warns the Future Warrior of the body change in time for the Warrior to shield Goku and reverse the Body Change, causing the Future Warrior and Ginyu to return to their original bodies. Back in his original body, Dark Ginyu has Guldo use Telekinesis to restrain Goku and performs another body change, successfully managing to steal Goku's Body. In Goku's body, Ginyu enters Villainous Mode and faces off against Goku in Ginyu's body and the Future Warrior, while Vegeta enters the fight, facing off against Guldo. The following fight plays out pretty much as it did in the original history: Vegeta knocks Goku's body down to the ground with a Sledgehammer attack and Ginyu tries to swap Goku's heavily damaged body for Vegeta's but Goku in Ginyu's body jumps in the way, returning both to their original bodies. Then Ginyu tries again to steal Vegeta's body, only for Goku to grab a nearby Namekian Frog and throw it in the way of the Body Change causing Ginyu to swap bodies with the frog instead of Vegeta. He appears as Dark Ginyu via Demigra's Dark Magic and obtains Villainous Mode after swapping bodies with Goku. In Parallel Quest 18: "Return of the Ginyu Force!", Ginyu manages to steal Goku's body when the Ginyu Force invades Earth. After all of the other Ginyu Force Members are defeated, Ginyu will appear in Goku's body. After taking a certain amount of damage he will cause Goku's body to transform into a Super Saiyan. Ginyu can only do this in the Parallel Quest and Ginyu's Super Saiyan Goku form is not playable. A much friendlier Captain Ginyu also appears in Toki Toki City to recruit potential new members of the Ginyu Force and the Future Warrior can apply resulting in Captain Ginyu becoming their Master and will teach the Warrior various Fighting Poses and techniques, ultimately teaching the Warrior his signature Body Change technique for successfully completing his Ginyu Force training regimen.

Xenoverse 2[]

The Ginyu Force Strikes Saga
Captain Ginyu with Vegeta's Body Xenoverse 2

Ginyu poses with Vegeta's body

During the main story, a history change caused by the Time Breakers and their allies in Age 762 allows Ginyu to once again steal Vegeta's body and poses together with Jeice in front of the Dragon Balls after they are recovered by Krillin and Gohan. Elder Kai observing this altered timeline within the time scroll wonders what Vegeta is doing, only for Future Trunks to explain that it is not his father and explains the Body Change ability. Chronoa however recalls that Ginyu stole Goku's body in the original history. Trunks attributes the change to Towa and Mira's meddling with history. He decides to work together with the 2nd Future Warrior to find out what the Time Breakers are planning. The warrior travels back to before Ginyu steals Vegeta's body. Under the influence of Dark Magic, Ginyu orders Guldo and Recoome, also under the influence of dark magic, to fight the present Z Fighters (Gohan, Krillin, and Vegeta) and the Warrior when they appear. Jeice, however, argues that they should play Rock-Paper-Scissors to decide but Ginyu tells him to be quiet, causing Burter to note the Captain is in a bad mood. Jeice attributes his strange behavior and anger to someone stealing the Captain's favorite ice cream which he blames on Burter though Burter quickly realizes Jeice is simply shifting the blame onto him as he is apparently the real culprit. Captain Ginyu takes the Dragon Balls back to the ship like in the original history though Future Trunks decides to follow him in the hope it will lead him to Towa and Mira.

After the Warrior defeats Guldo and Recoome, Recoome recovers and is about to perform Recoome Ultra Fighting Bomber when he is knocked out by Goku. Turles arrives and gives Jeice and Burter tainted Fruit of the Tree of Might which grants them the power of Villainous Mode. However, Burter is defeated, only for Future Trunks to show up wearing a scouter. Suddenly he poses, revealing Ginyu had managed to steal Future Trunks body due to a trap set by Towa and Mira. Future Trunks apologizes for his mess up while Ginyu yells at Jeice for failing to pose together with him and won't take any excuses when Jeice points out he had no idea he'd come back in a different body, before both Ginyu and Jeice turn their attention to Goku and the Future Warrior as Future Trunks arrives in Ginyu's body which Goku doesn't recognize due to not having met Ginyu in his original body in this timeline. Eventually, they manage to weaken Ginyu enough as Future Trunks convinces Goku to go defeat Ginyu without killing him. This forces Ginyu to attempt to swap bodies, though Future Trunks uses it as an opportunity to return to his original body. Turles returns and grabs Goku in a Full-Nelson. Ginyu thanks the stranger for his assistance and steal Goku's body, forcing the Warrior and Goku in Ginyu's body to battle the two evil doppelgangers of Goku. However the Warrior and Goku manage to weaken Ginyu to the point that he tries to steal the Warrior's body but Goku shields them to return to his original body and traps Ginyu in the body of a frog to foil a second attempt at swapping with the Future Warrior, forcing Turles to retreat. As a result, the original history is restored, though Chronoa admonishes Future Trunks for his carelessness which almost ruined history. After this saga is completed, Ginyu gains Future Trunks' body as a playable form.

Infinite History Saga

If Captain Ginyu is the Future Warrior's Instructor, he will be recruited by Chronoa to act as the Future Warrior's partner during a mission to investigate and deal with several corruptible Time Rifts. During the investigation, they encounter the enigmatic scientist Fu who has been using the rifts to safely experiment with altering history to study the results before collecting the energy of the history changes through energy absorption. Fu claims innocence in creating the rifts and offers to aid the Future Warrior by absorbing the rifts' energy, dispelling them, though they and Ginyu must help him alter history which Time Patrollers are normally forbidden to do so though Chronoa leaves the decision whether or not to take his offer even though she disapproves of Fu's methods and doesn't completely trust him as he knows too much about how time and history works. In one of the rifts, Ginyu uses his Body Change on Super Saiyan Rosé Goku Black stealing Goku's body Saiyan beyond God body from Zamasu.

Despite not being a proper deity Ginyu retains Black's Super Saiyan Rosé form due to Black being transformed when the Body Change occurred and Ginyu's prior experience fighting in Goku's body allowing him to utilize its power to the fullest. Thus briefly, Ginyu gains the power of a god, though the Body Change is undone when Fu absorbs the rift's energy and the rift is dispelled. Eventually, they learn Towa had prevented her brother's death by secretly altering the scroll for Age 774 when she invaded the Time Nest. Dabura hide in the Crack of Time and began plotting revenge against the Time Patrol for Towa's death in Age ???. Fu is revealed to be Dabura's artificially created nephew as he is Towa and Mira's genetic offspring. Dabura considers Fu his rightful successor as King of Demon Realm and plans to continue Towa's mission to revive Demon Realm. Dabura kidnaps Chronoa after turning the rest or the Time Patrol to stone save for the Future Warrior and Ginyu who confront Dabura in the Crack of Time. However, Fu ends coming to their aid instead of his uncle as he has no interest in revenge or reviving the Demon Realm, as he desires to use his experiments to better the universe. He deflects Dabura's Petrifying Spit back at Dabura turning him into stone, putting an end to Dabura's plans. However, Fu ends up escaping from the Time Patrol when they try to apprehend him as he is still technically a criminal for illegally altering history.

Main article: Dragon Ball Fusions Captain Ginyu and the Ginyu Force are among the many fighters to appear in the Timespace Rift created by Tekka and Pinich's wish to Shenron. Tekka's Team first encounters them in Satan City after recruiting Pan from the GT Era. Unaware they are villains, Tekka's Team find the Ginyu Force is troubled by something and learn that they are trying to find someone important to them whom they believe is trapped within the barrier around Frieza's Spaceship. Tekka's Team offer to help break the barrier and investigate the ship to which Ginyu agrees to. After taking down the barrier, Tekka's Team find the ship abandoned and report their findings to Captain Ginyu. Grateful for their assistance and the information, Captain Ginyu and the Ginyu Force teach Tekka's Team the powerful Five-Way Fusion technique the Ginyu Force had developed. As thanks, Goten and Trunks demonstrate the Metamoran Fusion Dance to the Ginyu Force by fusing into Gotenks. Captain Ginyu dubs the fusion produced by Five-Way Fusion, Ultra Fusion. Then Ziku detects a powerful ki signature near Frieza's Spaceship and both teams decide to investigate discovering the signature is coming from a different timeline. Tekka uses Burst Ki to open a time hole which accidentally frees Frieza from Earth's Hell causing Tekka's Team to learn that the Ginyu Force are villains. Though Captain Ginyu is thankful to Tekka's Team he follows Frieza's orders to eliminate them after Gulce and Recurter are created via Metamoran fusion, Ginyu requests to fuse with Frieza but he refuses forcing Ginyu to fight Tekka's Team with his fused teammates. However they are defeated causing Frieza and the Ginyu Force to flee.

The Ginyu Force later enters the Timespace Tournament and confronts Tekka's Team once more but are defeated.

Enemy Warrior Arc

Main article: Enemy Warrior Arc Ginyu and the rest of the Ginyu Force are revived by Android 21 and Android 16 using the Namekian Dragon Balls which allows her to take cell samples from them to create mindless Ginyu Force clones which are lead by clones of Captain Ginyu though they lack the originals personalities and love of posing. Meanwhile 21 links artificial souls to the original Ginyu Force in order to control them. Frieza meanwhile is also revived (and apparently an unseen Sorbet as his Bad Ring Laser support attack appears as one of Frieza's Special Moves) only to be accidentally linked with a human soul by Android 16 who is secretly working against Android 21's evil persona which is responsible for reviving the villains and creating the clones. Frieza wanting revenge against 21 ends up freeing Nappa from 21's control and Nappa grovels before Frieza causing him to spare him as he is in need of henchmen due to his current weakened state. They end up encountering the Ginyu Force whom they notice are acting stranger than usual as they do not pose and show no loyalty towards Frieza. Frieza assumes they must have forgotten their master when they fixed that annoying posing habit of theirs unaware they are being controlled. Frieza and Nappa defeat them freeing Ginyu and his men from 21's control. They quickly beg Frieza to forgive them as they were being manipulated and Frieza valuing their loyal service decides to spare them, even if it means having to put up with their annoying habit of posing which unfortunately returns along with their original personalities.

In Special Event dialogue with Cell, it is suggested that he steal Perfect Cell's powerful body, but finds himself unable to do so because Cell reminds him of a frog, indicating he was traumatized by his memories from his time as Frog Ginyu. Additionally, his body change with Tagoma is also mentioned. In a Special Event dialogue with Goku, Goku asks Ginyu why he is so loyal to Frieza, and he reveals all the perks that come with being elite Frieza Force mercenaries, though Goku reveals that Vegeta gets most of those things (save for a planet bonus) living at the Capsule Corporation and even points out that Vegeta gets it without having to work and can train as much as he wants causing the entire Ginyu Force to admit the are now jealous of Vegeta's easy lifestyle. In another Special Event with Nappa, they argue as to whom will get the pleasure of killing a Clone Vegeta as they all hate on Vegeta for killing them, a hatred which extends to his clones as well.

Manga and Anime
DXRD Caption of Captain Ginyu say he never used his true power - Dragon Ball Manga volume 19 chapter 283

Ginyu states in the manga that he's never used his true power prior to facing Goku

During his battle with Goku, Frieza stated that he did not think anyone in the universe had surpassed Ginyu.[13] Jeice states that Captain Ginyu's maximum power level is 120,000. By comparison, the rest of the Ginyu Force members (aside from Guldo), who were the strongest fighters in the galaxy other than Frieza, were stated to be between 30,000 and 60,000. However, in terms of speed Ginyu was slower than Goku and Burter, despite having a higher power level than both of them.[14] When Krillin felt his power, he noted Ginyu was stronger than his squad. Upon arriving on Namek, Goku felt how powerful Ginyu was and noted in their confrontation that he may not be able to handle him. He was able to fight evenly with Goku in their battle, even knocking him away several times. When Ginyu trades bodies, while initially able to use Goku's full speed and power, once Ginyu attempted to increase his power level to 180,000, he instead decreased it to 23,000 (as well as decreasing even further in the English dub), as he could not unlock Goku's power, allowing Krillin to match him without using full power. In the anime, however, as he continued to battle, Ginyu gradually adjusted to his new bodies real power. This eventually lets him fend off Goku (in Ginyu's body) alongside Gohan and Krillin simultaneously. However, before he could reach full capacity, Vegeta's own newfound power was able to swiftly pummel Ginyu into submission, prompting Ginyu to switch bodies again, only to ultimately be stuck in the body of a powerless Namekian frog. Later in the anime, he briefly took control of Bulma's body. While able to fly despite Bulma's own lack of skill in the technique, Ginyu's power was pitiful, unable to cause any harm to Krillin. He attempted to take Piccolo's body as he was the strongest of the available targets, but Gohan's timely intervention returned Ginyu to the frog.

In the Golden Frieza Saga, Gohan states that Ginyu's power with Tagoma's body is higher than Tagoma's. After taking over Tagoma's body during Frieza's revenge, Ginyu is able to immediately access the new body's full power as he quickly pushed Tagoma's body to much greater levels than its actual owner. Ginyu is able to decimate the Z Fighters, and when faced with fighting base form Gohan (who was severely out of practice) he states that he does not understand why Gohan would challenge him with such a low power level. Ginyu is confident when facing Super Saiyan Gohan, however, he is knocked down in two hits by him. Despite this, Ginyu was able to recover relatively quickly - uninjured - and was ready to continue fighting - telling Frieza that he was only knocked down because he was caught by surprise and would be able to handle the Super Saiyan, however, Frieza stopped him due to wanting to torture Gohan. Soon after, Vegeta kills Ginyu effortlessly with a point-blank energy wave.

Statements by guidebooks and authors

According to the Dragon Ball Super rival danger scale, Ginyu (with Tagoma's body) ranks as less than one out of twelve, not even making it on to the scale.[15]

Video Games

In Dragon Ball Z: Goku Gekitōden, Ginyu starts off with a power of 120,000 but can increase it up to 240,000.

In Dragon Ball Z II: Gekishin Freeza, Ginyu's battle power is 160,000.

In both Xenoverse and Xenoverse 2, Ginyu is capable of accessing Goku's full power via the effects of Towa's Dark Magic, which allow him to achieve Goku's 180,000 power level without the Kaio-ken. Presumably he is also stronger than he is in Goku's body while in Xeno Trunks' body in Xenoverse 2, as Xeno Trunks is shown to be able to go toe-to-toe against the likes of powerful villains such as Dark Magic enhanced Turles and Slug, as well as Mira (who had grown more powerful after his defeat in Xenoverse) while in his base form.

Additionally, in a parallel quest in both games Ginyu is able to transform into a Super Saiyan while in Goku's body, which increases the bodies' power 50 times its base level making him strong enough to fight alongside his master Frieza in his 100% Power Final Form.

When Ginyu accompanies the Future Warrior during the Infinite History Saga, he steals Goku's body from Zamasu (Goku Black), giving him access to Goku Black's Super Saiyan Rosé at full power - as he is already experienced with Goku's body.

Abilities[]

  • Flight – The ability to fly with the use of ki.
  • Ki Blast – The most basic form of energy wave.
  • Power Up - Ginyu is among the few members of Frieza's army capable of increasing his power by powering up. Ginyu is also capable of lower his power level as he tells Goku that he too is capable of changing his battle strength at will. Ginyu can also use this ability while inside Goku and Tagoma's bodies, though he was unable to access Goku's 180,000 power level as he lacked Goku's knowledge of the Kaio-ken and thus was only capable of raising it to 23,000. However, due to Tagoma being a member of Frieza's army who had trained with Frieza himself, Ginyu was able to use Tagoma's power to its fullest thanks to his knowledge of this ability (his understanding of which may have improved during his time on Earth as a frog as he was potentially able to learn more about it by spying Goku and his friends over the years).
  • Body Change – Ginyu's special ability to switch bodies though he and the switcher keep their voices. In the Xenoverse series, Ginyu can transform into Goku's Super Saiyan form after stealing his body in a PQ and even Goku Black's Super Saiyan Rosé form after he manages able to steal Goku's body from Goku Black while he was in his Super Saiyan Rose form, during the Infinite History Saga of Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 as part of the Extra Pack 2 DLC.

After the 1.09.00 Update in Xenoverse 2, it can be added to Ginyu's custom skillset after purchasing it for 5 TP Medals in Partner Customization. Allows Ginyu to switch to another attack mid move, allowing him to initiate the Space Mach Attack in Xenoverse 2 by switching mid move from Mach Kick to Mach Punch.
    • Mach Punch - Burter's rapid fire punching Super Skill. After the 1.09.00 Update in Xenoverse 2, it can be added to Ginyu's custom skillset after purchasing it for 5 TP Medals in Partner Customization.

    • EX-Fusion - By wearing a Metamo-Ring and performing the Fusion Dance Ginyu can fuse with Frieza to create Ginyuza or with Great Saiyaman to create Ginyuman in Dragon Ball Fusions.

Past bodies

When Ginyu first discovered his Body Change, he swapped bodies with the richest kid in his class, however he switched back to his previous body not long after.[5]

Prior to obtaining his horned purple body, Ginyu possessed a different body - which the previous owner of the horned purple body ended up with.[6]

Ginyu after changing bodies with Goku

The form Ginyu takes when he changes bodies with Goku. He does have some differences from the usual Goku in this state, such as more menacing eyes and a green scouter.

This form of Ginyu is playable in several video games and is called Captain Ginyu Transformed in the Dragon Ball Z Collectible Card Game. In Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi, the form is known as Goku's Body.

In the Xenoverse series, Ginyu can use Goku's Super Saiyan form while in Goku's Body as an enemy NPC during a Parallel Quest. Through Towa's Dark Magic, Ginyu is capable of accessing the full power of Goku's body using the Villainous Mode power up.

As part of the Extra Pack 2 DLC in Xenoverse 2, if Ginyu is the Future Warrior's current Instructor, he will appear as the Warrior's Partner during the Infinite History Saga. When they're both helping Fu, Ginyu will use Body Change to steal Goku's body from Black while it is in Super Saiyan Rosé form after their meeting, gaining the access to Goku Black's Super Saiyan Rosé form in process. During this battle with Goku Black in Ginyu's body, Ginyu will explain that he does not have to adjust to this body, due to the fact that he already has experienced Goku's body in the past thus allowing him to utilize Goku's power and since Goku Black was already transformed when the Body Change occurred Ginyu retained the usage of his Super Saiyan Rosé form instead of Goku's Super Saiyan Blue form (as Super Saiyan Blue is the mortal version of Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan while Super Saiyan Rosé is version used by proper deities), despite Ginyu being a mortal and not a proper deity.

In Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, shortly after the body change with Goku during the Battle on Planet Namek, this form is briefly identified as Goku (?) before the switch is revealed.

When trying to steal Vegeta's body during the battle on Namek, Goku throws a Namekian Frog in the way, causing Ginyu to become trapped in its body. In this state Ginyu is referred to as "Ginyu Frog". He remains in this body for years, until Frieza's revival and return to Earth, at which point he takes advantage of the situation at hand and switches bodies with Tagoma using a variation of his Body Change technique that allows him to change bodies without speaking.

In anime Filler, the Ginyu Frog manages to briefly switch bodies with Bulma after she fits him with a Universal Translator. In her body, he pretends to be her and watches the battle between Frieza and Goku with Gohan, Krillin, and Piccolo. Eventually Gohan realizes the switch after talking to Bulma in Ginyu's Frog body. His deception exposed Ginyu and the captain tries to steal Piccolo's stronger body, but Gohan throws the Bulma Frog in front of Piccolo causing Bulma to return to her original body and Ginyu back to a frog. Though limited in Bulma's body, Ginyu can sense ki naturally without the aid of a Scouter and retains his ability to perform the Body Change.

During Frieza's revenge, Ginyu takes control of Tagoma's body, and then powers up even further thanks to having greater ki manipulation skills than Tagoma, allowing him to draw the body's power out much further. In this form he is known as Ginyu Tagoma (ギニュータゴマ Ginyū Tagoma).[16] He was so strong he was able to take down Krillin, Piccolo, Roshi, Tien and Gohan in quick succession. However, when Gohan turned Super Saiyan he was beaten down quickly, although he retained no lasting wounds or damage and wanted to resume the battle after he got back up.

In the altered timeline in Xenoverse, Ginyu takes over Vegeta, becoming Venyu.[17] He then leads his "Venyu Force" in an attack on the Z Fighters, before taking over Goku's body.

Ginyu first took this form in Super Gokuden: Kakusei-Hen, in a what if story [18] but is killed by Frieza who mistook him for Vegeta. This form appears as one of Ginyu's playable forms in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2.

However, it's also one of Ginyu's potential body switches in Gekishin Frieza[19] along with Chiaotzu, Tien, and Yamcha who are alive during the game's retelling of the Battle on Planet Namek.

Ginyu in Super Saiyan Goku's body

In Xenoverse, Parallel Quest 18: "Return of the Ginyu Force!" Ginyu steals Goku's body after the Ginyu Force (backed by Frieza) invade Earth, gaining access to Goku's Super Saiyan form.

During the battle with Ginyu in Goku's body, Ginyu transforms into a Super Saiyan. He can also use this form in Xenoverse 2, Parallel Quest 34: "Return of the Ginyu Force!".

Ginyu's ability to use the Super Saiyan form while in Goku's body is likely related to Goku Black's ability to use Super Saiyan form in the manga (because both Ginyu and Zamasu are able to use the Super Saiyan form after switching bodies with Goku who had already obtained said transformation). Theoretically, this would indicate that Ginyu would be capable of using Xeno Trunks' Super Saiyan form as he too already possessed the transformation, but was apparently unable to as he was likely unaware of Xeno Trunks' Saiyan heritage and ability to use the transformation.

In the Extra Pack 2 DLC of Xenoverse 2, Ginyu switches with Goku Black, gaining Goku's body once more. As he switched while Goku Black was in his Super Saiyan Rosé form, Ginyu gains access to this form in process. It is implied that he is able to utilize the form simply due to Goku Black being transformed at the time Goku's body was stolen from him and the fact that Ginyu had prior experience using Goku's body thus was able to utilize its power to the fullest without needing to get used to it, despite Ginyu himself being a mortal and not a proper deity like Goku Black which would likely under normal circumstances prevent him from utilizing Super Saiyan Rosé. As a result, it allows Ginyu to utilize the form's Godly ki.

  • Scouter - Like most members of the Frieza Force, Ginyu wears a Scouter to read power levels and for communication. However he does not rely to much on Scouter readings as he is aware that some beings are capable of rising and lowing their battle power as he is capable of doing so himself. He recognizes that Goku had been holding back his true power and had fooled the Ginyu Force's scouters by raising his power in short bursts. Ginyu however still uses it despite this knowledge and after reading Goku's Kaio-ken enhanced power, gives his Scouter to Jeice and swaps bodies with Goku. In Goku's body, Jeice returns Ginyu's scouter back to him which he wears while in Goku's body until it is knocked off while fighting Gohan and Krillin. In the Xenoverse series it is revealed that the model he uses is called New Model Scouter (Green) which is described as a cutting edge scouter used by all members of the Ginyu Force (save for Guldo due to the shape of his head).
  • Attack Ball - A space craft used by members of the Frieza Force. Unlike other Attack Balls, Ginyu and his men use an Attack Balls with the Ginyu Force symbol on the craft's door. Used by Ginyu to travel to Namek. According to Vegeta, the Ginyu Force Attack Balls were programmed to automatically fly to Planet Yardrat as the Ginyu Force were in the process of conquering it when Frieza summoned them to Namek.
  • Universal Translator - A collar shaped device built by Bulma in the anime that can make any language understood. Was given to Frog Ginyu by Bulma so she could understand him and having someone to talk took while on her own as her friends were busy fighting Frieza. However in restoring his ability to speak while trapped in the body of a Namekian Frog, Bulma inadvertently restored his ability to utilize his Body Change allowing him to swap bodies with her. Ginyu later removed the device from Bulma and got rid of it to prevent her from using it to warn her friends in addition to fulfilling his desire to shut her up after having to listen to her constant complaining while trapped as a frog. Unfortunately Gohan later discovered the switch and helped Bulma return to her body, leaving Frog Ginyu unable to speak for good until he managed to swap bodies with Tagoma (Bulma angrily recalls Ginyu's Body Change with her in Dragon Ball Super after he steals Tagoma's body).
  • Xeno Trunks' Sword - A sword used by Xeno Trunks which Ginyu wears on his back while in Xeno Trunks' body in Xenoverse 2. However he himself never utilizes either because it doesn't fit his fighting style and/or due to his lacking knowledge of swordsmanship to use it effectively in battle.
  • Metamo-Ring - A device invented by Bulma which allows two people to perform EX-Fusion. Used by Ginyu in Dragon Ball Fusions to fuse with Frieza to create Ginyuza and Great Saiyaman (Adult Gohan) to create Ginyuman.
  • Time Ring - While in Goku Black's stolen body, Ginyu wears his Time Ring in Xenoverse 2. Unfortunately he never utilizes it presumably due to being unaware of its power to travel through time and the fact that he is working alongside the Time Patrol at the time.
  • Potara - While in Goku Black's stolen body, Ginyu wears his Potara earring in Xenoverse 2. However like Black's time ring it is never utilized though presumably it would allow him to use the Time Ring due to the earring itself being a Potara of Supreme Kai rank.

Trivia[]

  • His name is a pun on gyūnyū (牛乳), the Japanese word for dairy milk.
  • Captain Ginyu's "Character Introduction" biography in the Budokai Tenkaichi series states that Ginyu has used the Body Change technique numerous times in his career, which suggests that his humanoid appearance in Dragon Ball Z is the result of a previous Body Change, rather than Ginyu's original body. However, Ginyu's appearance as a child and in the Other World in Dragon Ball GT after dying in the body of a Namekian Frog (in Dragon Ball Z) or Tagoma's body (Dragon Ball Super) is the form he had during first on-screen appearance. It may be possible, however, that this body was simply his preferred one, the one he had stayed in for the most time (even longer than the frog), or that he had switched back to his original one sometime before the battle on Namek, or that the artists/animators wanted to ensure he was recognized easily by the viewers.
    • Additionally, there are conflicting sources that say Captain Ginyu's horned form is his original form, while another source says that he switched bodies with the well-known horned form after he joined Frieza's army.
  • In Chi-Chi's commentary in Budokai Tenkaichi 3, she notes that Ginyu appears to like comic book heroes. Indeed, he does often strike poses like a hero.
  • In most English dubs of Dragon Ball Z, each of Captain Ginyu's voice actors also served as series narrators: Dale Kelly was the first narrator in the FUNimation dub (until he was replaced by Kyle Hebert), and Brice Armstrong was the narrator of the Dragon Ball anime series. Of note, even though Ginyu and the narrator are not the same voice actor in the English dub of Dragon Ball Z Kai, that series' narrator, Doc Morgan, sounds strikingly similar to Richard Newman (Ginyu's Ocean dub voice actor).
  • In the Remastered Ginyu Saga, where Ginyu is voiced by Brice Armstrong, Dale Kelly's voice is still used whenever Ginyu powers up, possibly due to Armstrong's age (of note, Armstrong retired shortly after the Remastered versions).
  • Captain Ginyu's own voice actor is used regardless of the body he inhabits, even if this would be logically improbable/impossible due to differences in vocal chords (such as when in Bulma's body). This is true in both the original Japanese and the English dub. In Dragon Ball Super, Frieza himself even notes the difference in Ginyu's and Tagoma's voices which is how he realizes that he is not Tagoma, though he does not recognize the voice as Ginyu's.
  • Ginyu's reaction for Jeice's report about the death of Guldo, Recoome and Burter differs in the English dubs: in the original Ocean dub, he shouts that "How could three of the most powerful warriors in the universe be defeated?!" and then has a flashback of each of them. However, in the FUNimation dub, he shouts "How could two of the of the most powerful warriors in the universe be defeated?!" and then has the same visual of them three; which could be because Goku did not defeat Guldo and Ginyu does specify "one man" defeating Recoome and Burter.
  • In Dragon Ball Z Kai, for the preview for "Surprise! Goku is Ginyu and Ginyu is Goku?!", Ginyu breaks the Fourth Wall by saying that he is taking charge and comments on changing the series name to "Ginyu Force Kai".
  • In the scene he appears as ghost in the Other World on Dragon Ball GT, Ginyu is drawn with white gloves (like most of Frieza's henchmen and Ginyu Force members), instead of the black & white arm-protectors he wears in his humanoid shell.
  • Captain Ginyu was the only member of the Ginyu Force to meet a Super Saiyan, and even fought Gohan in this form (although he was outmatched).
    • Ironically, he is also the only member capable of using the transformation himself in the Xenoverse series while in Goku's body during a parallel quest.

Vegeta kills Ginyu in Ultimate Tenkaichi almost the same as he did against him in this episode

  • Captain Ginyu is the last active member of the Ginyu Force to be killed by Vegeta.
    • He is also the only active member of the Ginyu Force that did not die on Namek as he was killed by Kid Buu on Earth, and then in Tagoma's body by Vegeta in Dragon Ball Super.
    • Captain Ginyu dying by a close-range ki blast from Vegeta was first done in the trailer of Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi where he was killed while in his primary body.
