Forum New infoboxes

Back over on the Narutopedia I've been working on a new type of infobox. The plan is actually one that ties in SemanticMediaWiki, and Semantic Forms. Basically it ends up turning the infoboxes into a whole pile of annotated information that you can query for (ie: Generate entire lists using), and using Semantic Forms and a namespace trick the infoboxes don't clutter up the article, and you can edit the infobox using a nice intuitive form, supporting dropdowns, autocomplete, and lists.

Currently Template:Infobox Character is used here, and one or two are using the shared Template:Infobox/Character setup. Both are a little old. I'd like to also try to develop some new infoboxes for the dragonball wiki here.

While it'll be a bit of time before Wikia gets Semantic Forms setup, I'd still like to start ahead by planning what fields are needed for the infoboxes.

Could everyone help out a bit in listing out the pieces of information needed inside of an infobox. ~NOTASTAFF Daniel Friesen (DanTMan, Nadir Seen Fire) (talk) Nov 24, 2008 @ 05:17 (UTC)

There was a created by field in the old one, what fits in there? ~NOTASTAFF Daniel Friesen (DanTMan, Nadir Seen Fire) (talk) Nov 24, 2008 @ 05:58 (UTC)

Sounds like a good plan. I'm not sure what the created by field was to be used for. I suppose it might have been intended to apply to characters like Majin Buu and the Androids, perhaps? (Though those are usually just specified in the FamConnect field.) Speaking of which there should probably be a field analogous to the current FamConnect field that lists closely related characters. (Should probably be titled something other than "Family" this time, since often mentors and friends get listed in there too.) -- Nonoitall talk contr 07:13, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
Hmmm... family right... That's going to be a little tricky. The idea here is not to create a full list within each article. Rather than listing an entire family list for each character, we'd only annotate with something like the parents or creators, or instead children. Basically we'd either annotate in the direction of ancestors and mentors, or decendants and pupils. Using SMW the reverse relations would all be filled in automatically. ~NOTASTAFF Daniel Friesen (DanTMan, Nadir Seen Fire) (talk) Nov 24, 2008 @ 18:55 (UTC)
Wow. You pretty much covered everything. Now, about that Family field. Wouldn't that make an overly long list for characters of the Son Family? That would be my only concern here. Other than that, it looks good.-- bulletproof 19:11, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
Like Goku's? ~NOTASTAFF Daniel Friesen (DanTMan, Nadir Seen Fire) (talk) Nov 24, 2008 @ 20:02 (UTC)
Precisely.-- bulletproof 18:00, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
Is a parameter for listing ever member of the family really necessary? As it stands right now, numerous Infoboxes delve into so much as fusees where applicable. Some (such as Goku's core family) grow quite long, while others are just awkward (Cell's for example, where the character is listed as the niece of Marron as a result of being listed as 18's brother. Allegedly in their human lives, 17 and 18 were siblings, but Cell's only physical relation to 18 is that they were each ongoing android projects led by Dr. Gero. Cell refers to 17 and 18 as brother and sister, but logically this has to be taken with a grain of salt). Maybe the new character Infobox could use a Spouse(s) parameter and a Children parameter? Colours and Family[]

I say make two different boxes, one for close family members, the other for mentors and/or students. And disclude friends or the sort from the boxes. I don't whose idea was it to include Krillin in Goku's family, but personally - no offense - think it was kinda stupid.

I agree with the rest of the Draft. But please denote the colours of the Hair, Eyes and Skin with coloured checkboxes as well, like in Gogeta's article. It looks cool. Like this: Green:      . --Neos 12:11, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

Personally I think little colored boxes in Infobox parameters degrade the value of the template. If there really needs to be some representation of what color something is beyond a simple statement in text, then there should rather be statement in colored text. For example: red. Storm 20:21, 14 December 2008 (UTC)
Hmm. That could cause readability problems with some colors though. (If we decided to do that, maybe we could put a nicely contrasting background behind the text though.) I don't think the color boxes themselves look bad in the infobox, but their presentation could be improved. I often see multiple boxes connected with ampersands and 'or's which just looks tacky. -- Nonoitall talk contr 08:58, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

Alternate Names[]

While we're on the subject of infoboxes, it might be good to define just what qualifies as an alias or alternative title. A lot of times I have no clue where some of the names put into those boxes come from and it seems like some editors just put in names for the heck of it. -- Nonoitall talk contr 08:58, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, heh, heh. Don't mind the 'Cueball' thing on Krillin. I was the one who put it there about a year ago. Anyways, an alias should be just that, an 'Alias', like Great Saiyaman and Demon Prince Vegeta. Not nicknames. Oh, and since we're talking about names: which is Goku's real name? Goku or Kakarott? I think it should be Kakarott, since that is his birth name. Goku's his name on Earth but usually the name given at birth is considered the real one. --Neos 12:36, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
If you look at articles about real people and such on Wikipedia, the name in the Infobox's title, and the name the person is generally referred to throughout the article is their pseudonym or something they legally changed their name to. The article will refer to the person by their birth name only until the alternate name they assume comes into play, after which they generally go by that name. Also, is it "Kakarot" or "Kakarrot"? The English manga spells it as Kakarrot, but I'm sure I've seen it spelled with a single 'r' before... Then again the manga is one of the highest naming precedents. Hmm... Storm 20:36, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
Actually, I got the idea for Kakarrot being the real name because in the DC Database Wiki, Superman's real name is refered to as Kal-El, his alien birth name, instead of Clark Kent, his earth legal name. That's what made me wonder about Goku, since they're not too different when it comes to their histories. As for the spelling, I guess they're several spellings. But the Japanese romanji name is Kakarotto, with only one 'r', so I guess the correct one is supposed to be Kakarot. I just use two 'r's 'cause its a habit. --Neos 10:18, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
I think it has a single 'r' in the anime, though I don't have anything handy to confirm that. I don't mind nicknames in the alias list as long as they actually have a source. A lot of times names get thrown in that I've never seen or heard in the series though. -- Nonoitall talk contr 10:18, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
