Forum Forming a group dedicated to citing sources

Hey guys! So, here's my idea. Basically, said group would have the task of going article by article adding sources, correcting sources, removing false sources, and any other actions involving sources. Basically, my idea is that this will add some organization to completing this monumental task. Our beloved Wiki greatly lacks sources. Some articles, such as Saiyan, Namekian, and Goku (not fully completed) I took into my own hands, and added tons of citations. This is the style in which we need to follow, proper sources are crucial! So! Anyone who is interested in joining this user group, and being dedicated to the tasks at hand, please tell me below! If we all work together, this can be done! Please also give your opinion as well, as to ways this could be accomplished best. I was thinking for the name... how about, Dragon Ball Wiki's Special Forces or the Citation Corps.

Requirements
  • Must properly understand how to cite sources
  • Must be dedicated to the task at hand
  • Must be reputable

Let's have part of the test to get in be a dance contest, and then a test to see how good their poses are. Oh, and we have to make sure no one finds out exactly what it was that happened to the last Giny- I mean Special Forces. -- SSJ4 Goku(2) 10X.Ka.me.ha.me.ha.....talk.....contrib. 21:36, July 19, 2010 (UTC)

I like the concept of it and the names but I'm not sure if I agree with 10X Kamehameha. I can barely dance! Speaking seriously, I still have some doubts about this. For example, in a biography and in an episode's summary, putting sources on them still apllies? What sources should we go look first? The manga, the anime, etc. You get my point... Vegeta MorningVegeta - San Talk ContribVegeta Morning 21:55, July 19, 2010 (UTC)

Well those are things we have to discuss. Sources indicate where information comes from. For example if we wanted to source the fact that Goku is a Saiyan, we could provide a reference to Dragon Ball Z episode 2, "Reunions". This gives us a source for our information. Episodes, manga chapters, reputable websites, guides etc. can all be used! As for which to use (anime or manga) why not both if we can find them? If we have just one correct source that works fine, but no harm in adding more of the same. Does this make sense? And I guess I better practice my dance moves 10X Kamehameha!

I think there should also be a test for who can push the largest boulder, and deliver milk the quickest! :P I'm always looking for projects to focus on when not going through the recent edits checking for correctness and vandalism. I would love to be part of the Ginyu For... Z Fight... Citation Squad! Dragon Ball Z GT Goku GTGohanBlueSuper Saiyan GotenGoku,Gohan,Gotendragonball-z-image-2 22:18, July 19, 2010 (UTC)

Once we gather at least 5 users up to the task, it will begin!

I'd like to join. But to be fair we should have a contest. We should play either a children's card game or fight to the death. Its your choice ;) BrolythelegendBroly 7 22:39, July 19, 2010 (UTC)

We'll also take bets on chocolate bars! Haha, but awesome Brolythelegend, glad to hear you want to help!

Hmm, what about a quiz to see which users can pull specific scenes or episodes out of nowhere? Like naming the episode number when we first see an SS2, or the scene where Future Trunks uses his Heat Dome attack, or where in the Daizenshuu certain overly-specific information can be found. Dragon Ball Z GT Goku GTGohanBlueSuper Saiyan GotenGoku,Gohan,Gotendragonball-z-image-2 22:46, July 19, 2010 (UTC)

Well I don't really think we need a test haha (I was only kidding?), I just want to get a group of dedicated users together who want to overhaul on sources with me, and under a badass name of course. But of course said users MUST understand how to properly cite etc. So, if they can't do that, they can't join.

I've already proposed on other forum the creation of a source template which could be put in the beginning of articles urgently needing sources... What do you guys think about that? Vegeta MorningVegeta - San Talk ContribVegeta Morning 23:00, July 19, 2010 (UTC)

Well, we already have the {{Fact}} template. It adds the "Articles containing uncited statements" category. Dragon Ball Z GT Goku GTGohanBlueSuper Saiyan GotenGoku,Gohan,Gotendragonball-z-image-2 23:02, July 19, 2010 (UTC)

I also created this one - {{Sources}}, that way it's big and bright on the top of the page. Later on we can sign it "Your friendly neighborhood Citation Corps.".

I saw the template, it looks great, man! The thing is, I thought we needed a template that immediately caught a contibutor's attention so in that way, the contributor could know what's missing most on the article. So, I guess we're sticking with the "Citation Corps"? Vegeta MorningVegeta - San Talk ContribVegeta Morning 23:11, July 19, 2010 (UTC)

Haha, I like the idea. Why do I get the feeling that we are all calling the group something else? Hehe, I can picture us all signing it in slightly different ways making some people scratch their heads wondering if we do it on purpose :P.
On a more serious note though, how are we proposing to go about this project? Are we really planning on adding the {{Fact}} or {{Sources}} templates to every page before we have referenced everything? That seems like it would be rather obtrusive and would make the Wiki quite cluttered for a long time, until many of the articles are sourced correctly.

Dragon Ball Z GT Goku GTGohanBlueSuper Saiyan GotenGoku,Gohan,Gotendragonball-z-image-2 23:13, July 19, 2010 (UTC)

The {{Sources}} and now the {{Standards}} templates will both greatly help to make users and readers aware of the articles lack of standards and or references. The {{Fact}} template as DragonBallZGTGoku brought up, is to be placed directly after a piece of information that has no source and is questionable. Does that make sense guys (if we hadn't known of course). As for what you said GTGoku, about using them on every page... no, only for pages IN DRASTIC need do I feel this would be justifiable. And I like the Citation Corps. but any names you guys want to throw out, be my guest!

I'm all for people citing sources. Given our MoS guidelines and discussion on canonicity, I think we should have a preference for using manga references, though it certainly doesn't hurt to cite both the manga and the anime where possible. Before we really charge into it, it might also be worthwhile to create a couple templates for citing manga chapters and anime episodes. That will make it easier to keep our references looking consistent, and it will also simplify things in the event that we want to tweak their formatting down the road. I'll try to whip something maintainable up this evening. -- Nonoitall talk contr 00:49, July 20, 2010 (UTC)

I believe this is a really good idea but there are some things which could potentially pose a problem, the most obvious being that many users only have a limited collection of episodes or manga, or none at all, so they may not be able to add sources to some pieces of info. Alongside that, websites where users can gather sources may not be reliable. However despite several problems that may present themselves, I am all for this and think we should get it under way as soon as possible.  SSWerty  04:21, July 20, 2010 (UTC)

Well SSWerty, this is why we find users who can employ such things (we can also just check episodes on the Wiki etc.) I know one other potential member would be SuperTiencha, as he helped me out by adding manga chapters. As far as websites go, if our group adds them, we'll know they're reputable (I'm sure we can create a basis as to what websites need in order to be considered reliable as well).

Even if a user doesn't know where to find a certain citation, it would still be a big help if they could just mark the statement with the {{fact}} template. That way, someone who does have a source will be able to find the statement in need easily. The template(s) I'm working on for citations are going to take me a little longer than one evening, but I'm thinking I should have something usable by this weekend. I don't suppose anyone would want to make some redirects for the manga chapters so we can easily link to them? (For example creating a page named Bloomers and the Monkey King that redirects to The Monkey King#Bloomers and the Monkey King.) I'll do it when I'm finished with the anime info templates I'm working on if no one else has yet though. -- Nonoitall talk contr 12:23, July 20, 2010 (UTC)
EDIT: It seems a few chapters have redirects in place already but they don't appear to link to the specific chapter summaries. -- Nonoitall talk contr 12:27, July 20, 2010 (UTC)

Sounds like a good idea and a lot of work to me! Hope it works out gooooood.  SSJ4 Lewich  talk  contribs  13:09, July 20, 2010 (UTC)

I have started doing some sourcing and I am interested in helping this. One thing I think we should do is that instead of listing just an anime episode on a reference tag, we should put the manga chapter and the anime episode in one reference tag. - Bulma22SuperTienchaChichi01Talk ContributionsLaunchDragonBallE

Sounds good Nonoitall, I created a few simple templates yesterday, which can be located here and here. The "Fact" template is also a huge help. I agree SuperTiencha, having both manga and anime when applicable is a wonderful idea, and I'm glad you want to help! To those who said they wanted to join (as listed above), I'm going to ahead and put your names on the Citation Corps page, if you have second thoughts, let me know and I can remove you. Of course, you can quit anytime you like if it's just not for you. I'll work on a template for us too. Thanks guys, I'm hopeful we can make a HUGE difference.

This is really a huge step in the wiki if done correctly. I'm glad to help. I just need to collect sources 'till I start doing it. Good luck everyone! Vegeta MorningVegeta - San Talk ContribVegeta Morning 18:55, July 20, 2010 (UTC)

Glad to hear it Vegeta - San. I made us all a nifty little template. I truly hope we can get the job done, I have faith in all of our abilities, and we can truly make this the definitive source for Dragon Ball!

One of the templates (for DBZ citations) is hopefully ready for usage now. Assuming this first one meets with our corps' approval, I'll create similar ones for the other two anime series and the manga as well. I'm hoping they will make it easier not only to refer to episodes/chapters using only their number, but also to create consistently formatted citations as well. Feel free to tweak it and its backing data source template if they need it, or let me know what improvements/fixes you'd like made if you don't feel up to messing with it. -- Nonoitall talk contr 09:22, July 22, 2010 (UTC)
Looks great Nonoitall, we will definitely use that! I will try and compare the difference between this and our current method of the reference tag as well.

{{DbRef}} is now complete for DB anime references. It occurred to me that we should probably have one for the edited line of DBZ episodes too, so I'll work on that after DBGT and the manga are taken care of. -- Nonoitall talk contr 00:58, July 24, 2010 (UTC)
