Forum Akira Toriyama's personal thoughts

This topic is about Akira Toriyama's thoughts on DB (not fan's thoughts), and more importantly, his thoughts on his favorite characters and least favorite characters. It was stated in an interview that his favorite character is Piccolo. - Zarbon by raykugen-d2ygchz.png PrinceZarbon talk contribZarbon ava3.gif 10:56, September 4, 2009 (UTC)

Favorite Characters

An awesome character in the long run.

  • I believe mine would be Piccolo. He was the first character in my manga where I was like, "He has a scary face, but he's so cool!" It really is cliché when bad guys turn into good guys, but it just feels great drawing it!
    • In response to which character is his favorite from the Dragon Ball manga he created. Interview with Toriyama
      • Toriyama further explains his love for the Namekian: I thought of Piccolo first, and I wanted to draw him as a scary character, and it was only afterwards that I had to come up with a species. Since they have antennae, I thought they looked like slugs. So "Namekian" is a play on words, but I didn't think too deeply about it. I don't think they're plants, but they may be hermaphrodites.
        • This is intriguing as Piccolo is pretty much the only hero I liked the design of as well, out of all the main heroes. - Zarbon by raykugen-d2ygchz.png PrinceZarbon talk contribZarbon ava3.gif 10:56, September 4, 2009 (UTC)
  • In regards to having a whole series on another character, "Q: If Akira Toriyama was to create another Series who would be the main character?" Toriyama has stated that "A: The main character would be Mr. Satan."
    • This would likely be his second favorite character, as he has repeatedly mentioned Satan to be his favorite also. So Hercule Satan and Piccolo are his favorites. - Zarbon by raykugen-d2ygchz.png PrinceZarbon talk contribZarbon ava3.gif 10:56, September 4, 2009 (UTC)
      • Note: There is a scene in the final fight against Kid Buu after Hercule manages to convince the world to give energy for the spirit bomb, and Piccolo can be seen congratulating him, saying "Go Champ!" in an ironic twist, where he pays tribute to Hercule, who came through in the end. - Zarbon by raykugen-d2ygchz.png PrinceZarbon talk contribZarbon ava3.gif 10:56, September 4, 2009 (UTC)

Least Favorite Characters

  • I am looking to find a link where he has stated Vegeta to be one of his least favorite characters. It is stated on Vegeta's article that In an interview featured in Daizenshuu 2, the creator notes that Vegeta is one of his least favorite Dragon Ball characters, but that "he was extremely helpful to have around."
    • In Daizenshuu 4 it is stated that Q: Which character will live the shortest? to which Toriyama responds Vegeta. This is out of his own personal distaste for the veggie.
      • Clarification is needed to confirm this; I myself hate Vegeta also so I'm curious if my taste falls in line with Toriyama's, and if it's due to the character's design, mannerism, or a combination of both. - Zarbon by raykugen-d2ygchz.png PrinceZarbon talk contribZarbon ava3.gif 10:56, September 4, 2009 (UTC)
        • I don't see why Toriyama would hate Vegeta. He expanded on Vegeta a lot and kept him in the plotline nonstop. But more importantly... he expanded on him. Where as the other 2 Saiyans just died off and were never heard of again. Ares210 03:39, September 10, 2009 (UTC)
          • Expanding on a character has nothing to do with personally disliking a character. Toriyama has stated his favorite characters to be Hercule and Piccolo. Neither is expanded further in the later sagas to the extent of Goku. But they're still his favorites. I think his mentality fits well with mine in that he doesn't choose characters based on level of importance, but his own personal preference in terms of design, etc. This is why I want more proper sourcing for this, because I too, strongly dislike Vegeta's character. - Zarbon by raykugen-d2ygchz.png PrinceZarbon talk contribZarbon ava3.gif 03:56, September 10, 2009 (UTC)
            • Do you hate Vegeta because he killed Zarbon? Because if so, that would be funny. Vegeta is my favorite character though. And mainly what I was saying was that I felt that if Toriyama disliked Vegeta enough, he'd have killed him off too. But that's just my opinion. Ares210 20:21, September 14, 2009 (UTC)
              • I love Vegeta too but Toriyama DOES dislike him and he's kept alive because he's so helpful (as quoted above) seeing as how he's almost as strong as the main character and much more likely to do things Goku might not want to do. P.S. sorry if I'm doing everything incorrectly. new user.
              • This may be a bit hard to explain. I like the characters I like because they get killed. It has nothing to do with Vegeta. i dislike Vegeta because of how he looks and his traitorous behavior in and of itself. Has nothing to do with his killing literally ALL of my most favorite characters. - Zarbon by raykugen-d2ygchz.png PrinceZarbon talk contribZarbon ava3.gif 20:43, September 14, 2009 (UTC)
                • Interesting. And ironic that both our favorite characters are on opposite ends here. Ares210 21:15, September 14, 2009 (UTC)
                  • Well, technically, since the reason why I love them is because they die. In turn, if you understand the mentality of the villain lover, you will understand that the true villains never change sides and they all end up dead, which makes me love them more. - Zarbon by raykugen-d2ygchz.png PrinceZarbon talk contribZarbon ava3.gif 21:33, September 14, 2009 (UTC)
                    • I liked Vegeta less when he was a villain, and more when he was trustworthy but still on the edge. Now, I'm obviously new on this website. Show me how to message or PM you please, I'd like to show you something cool DBZ related. Ares210 22:01, September 14, 2009 (UTC)
                      • Is it villain related (I'm strictly a villain fan, lol) If you click on any user name, at the top section, there's a link that says "email user" and you can email any user in that manner if you'd like. - Zarbon by raykugen-d2ygchz.png PrinceZarbon talk contribZarbon ava3.gif 01:17, September 15, 2009 (UTC)
                        • lol, actually it's somewhat villain-related, but not really. just check your messages, dude. :) Ares210 02:03, September 15, 2009 (UTC)
                        • do you not liking vegeta have something to do with vegeta not going ssj3?

I think Vegeta is what Goku would be if he were evil.....not fighting with your heart and using pride instead weakens you... it took along ass time for Vegeta to realize this...When Vegeta fights Kid Buu...you can see he's not getting knocked out easily anymore....he holds his ground to the point it stuns Kid Buu from the pounding he was taking and still able to fight back. Vegeta never had personal trainer like Goku did either... he aided Gohan vs Cell.. otherwise Cell would have won. Hes saved the planet a few times if you think about it...and Goku to for that matter. Akira Toriyama hates his arrogance....but respects his power to change almost w/e he wants. Vegeta is awesome.

Favorite Fight

  • Goku vs. King Piccolo
    • as stated in Daizenshuu 4

Here's where we analyze his decisions, in general, which I seem to agree with for the most part. - Zarbon by raykugen-d2ygchz.png PrinceZarbon talk contribZarbon ava3.gif 10:56, September 4, 2009 (UTC)

Why Piccolo Why?

Piccolo is my favorite too, he was killed off in GT wrong, the dragon balls were obsolete by Kami and Picc's fusion, so why in the blue hell would the black star balls survive?

The black star balls were a result of misuse of the balls to begin with; they weren't an appendage to the creator's will. Piccolo's sacrifice was very emotional and to me, the most emotional scene in all DB history. - Zarbon by raykugen-d2ygchz.png PrinceZarbon talk contribZarbon ava3.gif 14:41, September 9, 2009 (UTC)

I'd Argue that BOTH of Piccolo's deaths (The GT one,and The one by nappa) were the Most emotional...the latter moreso --Silver Sinspawn 09:38, September 10, 2009 (UTC)

Toriyama put a great deal of emotion into the character of Piccolo, who was going through an emotional struggle himself. Piccolo embodies a man who internally struggles with his conflicting nature of acquiring vengeance for the death of his father, or becoming an ally with the very man who eliminated his father. Piccolo's quest leads him to become a friend and ally through the son of the man, Gohan, who brings a sense of hope into the deadly Namekian. Piccolo's design was also captivating, I'd say Toriyama actually spent more time creating the Namekian image than others. He wanted it nailed perfectly as he went extremely deep into Piccolo's persona and construct. In a book published for the most influential anime and manga characters of all time, there were but a few names from DBZ. There were only three from DBZ. They were Goku (for being the primary character), Piccolo (for being a conflicting primary character), and Frieza (for being the greatest antagonist). And the book had about one hundred names associated to the genre from numerous manga/anime. It's very integral to note these circumstances because they allow us to understand why Toriyama likes who he likes, and why the opinion of others may coincide with his oftentimes.

My favorite published article. - Zarbon by raykugen-d2ygchz.png PrinceZarbon talk contribZarbon ava3.gif 14:16, September 10, 2009 (UTC)

On another note, I love how aside from Frieza, Goku, and Piccolo being listed in that book, in another magazine publication, Zarbon is officially the only character to be listed from DBZ as one of the top five greatest henchmen of all time, from all anime. The other 4 were Legato (from Trigun), Lirin (from Saiyuki), Jediete (from Sailor Moon), and the Rare Hunters (from Yu-Gi-Oh). - Zarbon by raykugen-d2ygchz.png PrinceZarbon talk contribZarbon ava3.gif 14:05, September 10, 2009 (UTC)
