"Don't try to focus on anything. Let your eyes go out of focus and try not to blink. Remember you're not trying to see their bodies, but the light that the energy in their bodies gives off."
— Piccolo to Gohan

"The Saibamen Strike" is the seventeenth episode of the Saiyan Saga and the seventeenth overall episode of the original Saban dub for the Dragon Ball Z series. It aired in first-run syndication on February 8, 1997.

Summary[]

SaibamenPIONEER

Nappa and Vegeta, alongside the loyal Saibamen

Tien Shinhan volunteers to fight first, and quickly dominates his opponent. The Saibaman, however, stands back up, only to be destroyed mercilessly from behind by Vegeta for apparently holding back, warning the remaining Saibamen to fight at their best. Krillin volunteers to go next, but Yamcha requests to go instead, on the basis that Krillin has already been wished back to life with the Dragon Balls and will be lost forever if anything happens to him. Yamcha battles a Saibaman and apparently defeats it with a Kamehameha. He then becomes cocky enough to challenge the remaining four Saibamen by himself, but the beaten Saibaman wakes up and catches him by surprise by latching on to him. The Saibaman then self-destructs while still holding Yamcha, killing the both of them instantly.

Watching a telecast of the battle from Kame House, Bulma bursts into tears being Yamaha die, while Puar faints from the shock. Master Roshi consoles Bulma, saying that they can resurrect him with the Dragon Balls later on. Krillin, angered at his friend's demise, releases the Scattering Bullet, an energy blast that hits the Saiyans and destroys three of the remaining Saibamen, while Piccolo handles the last one as it lashes out on Gohan.

Vegeta and Nappa, however, come out unharmed, and start advancing on the Dragon Team. Nappa, however, volunteers to begin the battle himself. At random, he picks Krillin and charges towards him, but Piccolo appears in his way and fires a blast. Nappa dodges and delivers a kick to Piccolo during the confusion, sending him into a nearby rock, although Piccolo emerges relatively unharmed. Nappa, however, then begins powering up, and his power level skyrockets.

Major Events[]

  • Yamcha is killed by one of the Saibamen.
  • All six of the Saibamen are destroyed.

Changes[]
