Ensenji (円生樹の実), also called King Yemma's fruit, is the mystical fruit of the Yemma tree. It grows in Hell, on trees near the Bloody Pond in Area 1, Sector 3, as well as in Yemma Forest. The fruit first appears in the filler episode "Global Training".
Overview
Concept & Creation
The Peaches of Immortality
The Ensenji is based upon the Peaches of Immortality in the Chinese epic Journey to the West. In the Chinese epic, the Handsome Monkey King, Sun Wukong (who the character Goku is loosely based upon), is appointed guardian of the Heavenly Peach Guardian and steals one of the Peaches of Immortality belonging to Xi Wangmu (a Chinese Goddess, the Queen Mother of the West). A single peach grants the Handsome Monkey King over a thousand years of life and great power. The Ensenji, which was heavily influenced by the Peaches of Immortality, have very similar effects.
Properties
Anyone who eats the fruit has their health and physical form fully restored. The fruit restores and doubles the consumer's energy and physical might. It also prevents them from losing stamina or needing sleep or nourishment for three months straight.
History
Dragon Ball Z
An Ensenji in Goku's hand
After falling off of Snake Way, Goku lands in Area 1, Sector 3 of Hell next to the Yemma tree. He attempts to pick and eat some but before he can do so, he is stopped by the ogres Goz and Mez. After agreeing to catch Mez in exchange for an exit out of Hell, Goku tricks the ogre by pretending to steal one of the Ensenji. Mez attempts to stop him, and Goku uses the opportunity to catch Mez. After being shown the exit, Goku reveals to the ogres that he has taken a piece of the fruit and then eats it, which grants him enough energy to make up for the time he lost falling from Snake Way.
Video game appearances
In Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku, the fruit is first referenced by Goz. Shortly after, in following the anime, Goku attempts to eat the Ensenji in order to catch Mez.
In Dragon Ball Z: Attack of the Saiyans, following the anime, Goku attempts to eat the fruit in order to catch Mez and later steals a piece for himself. Later on, after catching Bubbles, Goku is requested by King Kai to stop Raditz from creating havoc in Yemma Forest. There, Raditz was attempting to steal one of the Ensenji, claiming that with the power of this fruit, he would surpass King Yemma himself. However, he is stopped by Goku, Bubbles and Gregory.
