Otherwise, the Budokai Tenkaichi games would not be much fun. Energy absorption was also used in [[Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug]], and was used by a non-android though the style was much different.

This article is about the absorption of ki. For absorption through osmosis, see Absorption.

Energy absorption is an ability introduced in the Android Saga by Androids 19 and 20. Due to them having mechanical components, Dr. Gero (Android 20) invented a way for him and 19 to absorb ki from an outside source in order to power up their ki reserves. This is accomplished through the use of a mechanism on each hand that absorbs ki blasts, or drains ki from a person when they are captured. However, unlike the fully organic characters in the series, ki absorbtion is the only way for them to power up their reserves of ki when they are away from his lab. This ability later reappears in Dragon Ball GT during the Super 17 Saga when it is used by Super 17.

In video games

In the Budokai video game series, the absorption technique is commonly used by Androids 19 and 20. Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2

In the Budokai Tenkaichi series, absorption allows the androids to absorb enemy ki blast and some energy-based Blast 1 and 2 attacks. The energy of the attack is then added to the player's own ki reserves for their own use. However, these select characters cannot power up on their own, relying on absorption as a means to gather energy.

In Dragon Ball: Raging Blast, the ki absorption is relatively the same as in the Tenkaichi series, only the amount of energy absorbed is drastically reduced and it takes energy to use the energy absorption (since it is a signature skill.)

Medamatcha's Absorption

In Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug, Medamatcha unleashes the medas (small mute leech like versions of himself) and they leap upon a person and drain him or her of their energy before reattaching to him and giving him their energy, he can also jump on the person and drain it himself by piercing their skin with his large fangs. Medamatcha successfully uses this attack on Gohan and then tries to use the same move on Goku but it fails when Goku proves too strong to be restrained by him and the medas even with their combined effort.
