Dragonball Z[1] is the name of the intro song used for the Canadian broadcast of Dragon Ball Z, and episodes 108-276 of the Ocean/Westwood dub. It was composed by Tom Keenlyside, John Mitchell and David Iris, who also would later compose background music for the Westwood dub. So far it has not been released on any official CD, although it is available for streaming on the composers official website.

Trivia[]

  • The song shares the same name as an instrumental Faulconer Productions song, which was used as the intro for Funimation's Dragon Ball Z dub of Seasons 4 to 9. Ironically both misspell "Dragonball", which is meant to be two words instead of a single word.
  • Like the previous Ocean Group intro Rock the Dragon, this opening mainly uses scenes from The Tree of Might.
  • In this opening, Goku can be heard shouting "Solar Flare" as he blasts Turles' henchmen. In The Tree of Might (where the scene originated from), Goku simply used a generic unnamed Ki Blast attack.
  • This opening originated in Canadian broadcasts of the Funimation dub on YTV, starting with episode 54 in late 1999. When the Ocean Group resumed dubbing in September 2000 for Europe with AB Groupe, the Canadian opening was carried over, becoming synonymous with their dub.[2]
  • The reason an alternate intro was created for Canada remains a topic of debate. It is possible that FUNimation was unwilling to license out the Bruce Faulconer opening to YTV, or that the network refused to pay for it. However, most believe that it was created to help authorize Dragon Ball Z as Canadian content under rule by the CRTC (meaning that 50% of content broadcast by a Canadian network must be approved as Canadian in origin.) Since Ocean Productions assisted in script writing and video editing for FUNimation even after their services for ADR was dropped, this was probably enough for the CRTC to consider Dragon Ball Z as a Canadian produced show.
  • Strangely enough, Rock the Dragon continued to be used for episode 1 on YTV even long after this theme song had replaced it, meaning Tom Keenlyside's theme was used for episodes 2-276 of the Canadian broadcast. The final broadcast of Dragon Ball Z on YTV in August 2008 retained the Rock the Dragon opening.
  • The studio version of theme song that was hosted on AniTunes differs from the final version, featuring some slightly different synths in the instrumental and overall being a slightly faster tempo. [1]
  • The Canadian and UK versions of the opening itself are different. The original Canadian version uses the exact same footage as Rock the Dragon, while the UK version edited in footage from the Frieza saga. This resulted in some discrepancies between the audio and visuals, such as Nicky's cry being heard over Gohan shooting a Masenko beam.
  • There were three different variants of the end credits version of this theme. The original was used for episodes 2-167 in Canada, which simply plastered the song over the Rock the Dragon credits. UK later got a second variant, used for episodes 108-276, which featured clips from the Android Saga and misspelled Daisuke Nishio's name as Dissuke Nishio. The third version was used for episodes 168-276 of the Canadian broadcast, which featured clips from the Buu and Android saga. Strangely, it lacked any actual credits besides Akira Toriyama.
