Dragon Ball Heroes (ドラゴンボールヒーローズ Doragon Bōru Hīrōzu), now known as Super Dragon Ball Heroes (スーパードラゴンボールヒーローズ Sūpā Doragon Bōru Hīrōzu), is a Japanese arcade game developed by Dimps, as the sixth Dragon Ball Z: Data Carddass game. Announced on October 21, 2010, and released on November 11, 2010, the game allows the usage of many characters from the Dragon Ball series, as well as characters new to the series.
Three ports of the game's content were released for Nintendo 3DS, named Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission, Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission 2 and Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission X.
A port named Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission was released for Nintendo Switch and Steam, which included content added in the game's Super Dragon Ball Heroes rebrand and was the first Dragon Ball Heroes game to be localized for the West. Several manga have also been released adapting the game, including Dragon Ball Heroes: Victory Mission, Dragon Ball Heroes: Charisma Mission, Super Dragon Ball Heroes: Dark Demon Realm Mission!, Super Dragon Ball Heroes: Universe Mission!!, Super Dragon Ball Heroes: Big Bang Mission!!!, Super Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultra God Mission!!!!, and Super Dragon Ball Heroes: Meteor Mission!. An anime simply named Super Dragon Ball Heroes began in 2018, which has been met with mixed reviews.
Dragon Ball Heroes is an extremely popular arcade game, being the number 1 digital card game in the market, running for roughly 14 years straight, and distributing over 1.2 billion cards as of October 2022.[1] It made over 5 billion yen per year starting from 2011, surpassing the total of 40 billion yen. There are around 9,000 individual cards and 1,820,000 players. The 3DS versions of the game, Ultimate Mission 1 and 2, sold over 700k copies in total.[2]
On November 17, 2016, the game received an update. The graphics of the game received a slight enhancement, the number of cards available for a team was increased to 7, and support-type characters such as giant characters who are playable without their base/smaller forms were added to the game. The game was renamed to Super Dragon Ball Heroes, which was also used as the name of the first set of missions released for the updated game. In early Fall of 2018, Super Dragon Ball Heroes introduced a new series, the Universe Mission, which updated the Battle U.I. During the Spring of 2020, Super Dragon Ball Heroes introduced a new series, the Big Bang Mission, as the game was approaching its 10th anniversary. This update is an upgrade to the game that improves the battle system and the graphics. In March 2022, the Ultra God Mission was brought about, bringing with it new mechanics, a change to the Battle U.I., and smoother transitions. On July 29, 2023, a new series, Meteor Mission, was announced.[3]
A test run with the arcade machines translated to English was ran during the Dragon Ball North American Tour 2018 but didn't see an English run during the Dragon Ball World Adventure the following year. The arcade machines would later be ported over to other parts of Asia in 2020 (i.e., Taiwan & Hong Kong) in hopes of a playable market there. That same year, the machines had to be divided by borders to practice social distancing due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, as well as delaying certain missions that were planned for an earlier release.
On May 9, 2024, it was announced that Dragon Ball Heroes would cease operations with the release of the upcoming carddass game, Dragon Ball Super Divers. However, in an interview with Victory Uchida, there will be plans for a separate "Heroes Mode" that will allow players to use their cards and their avatar while still migrating to the new arcade game.[4] On August 29, 2024 Meteor Mission 6, the final set of Dragon Ball Heroes released.

Trailers[]
A series of short trailers featuring new animation have been released to promote the game. Each one offers a very short, roughly one-minute, standalone plot with Beat, the main promotional character, featured as a protagonist in these commercials. The Super Dragon Ball Heroes: Dark Demon Realm Mission!, Universe Mission!!, Big Bang Mission!!!, Ultra God Mission!!!! and Meteor Mission! manga series draw heavy inspiration from these trailers for their adaptations of the game's story.
Gameplay[]
Dragon Ball Heroes uses a turn-based card battle system in five rounds or less, which offers 5 on 5 battles with only one health bar for a team of characters. The cards featuring characters from the Dragon Ball franchise are given specific powers and abilities that allow for unique and strategic combat experiences.
The player has to move the cards on the game board. Depending on the conditions of the match, up to five cards can be placed on the machine's game mat and are then moved on the playing field in an attempt to gain an advantage against the opponent. Characters further back on the field receive less damage than those in the front, but they also deal less damage as well. During both the attack and defense phases of battle, timing meters will appear on the screen and force the player into a mini-game to determine the amount of damage dealt. The goal is to press the button on the machine with precise timing to fill the timing meter gauge more than the opponent in order to gain the advantage in the exchange and perform either an effective attack or defense depending on the phase. Special attacks can only be performed if the advantage is gained during the attack phase. Special team attacks called Ultimate Units can also be performed.
During a battle, the player use cards which allow him to transform, fuse, enhance their special attack, throw a huge energy ball, do a Kamehameha, brainwash the opponent, do a double or triple team attack, aiming at opponent, do a Z attack or summon other characters (even the giants ones), or summon a supportive robot or other avatars to help by either offensive or defensive ways.

Regional differences[]
There are several differences between the regional releases of Dragon Ball Heroes, whether it be the arcade version or with Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission.
- American Version: In World Mission and the 2018 test runs, the game is translated to English, but the voice dub is still Japanese.
- Spanish Version: In World Mission, the game is translated to both European Spanish and Latin American Spanish, but the voice dub is still Japanese.
- French Version: In World Mission, the game is translated to French, but the voice dub is still Japanese.
- Italian Version: In World Mission, the game is translated to Italian, but the voice dub is still Japanese.
- German Version: In World Mission, the game is translated to German, but the voice dub is still Japanese.
- Russian Version: In World Mission, the game is translated to Russian, but the voice dub is still Japanese.
- Chinese Version: In the official arcade games, the game, dialogue and voice dubs are translated and dubbed in Chinese.
Reception[]
Dragon Ball Heroes has received generally mixed to positive reviews, with official reports saying that it's the Number 1 digital card game in all of Japan.[5] The series has attained a near-cult following as much of the characters, stories, games and spinoffs have recieved widespread and/or mainstream acclaim. Despite the massive positivity, the game's lack of overseas promotional work, aside from several cameo appearances in other media and even World Mission, has been brought into question countless times by fans.
Trivia[]
- Dragon Ball Heroes has become a notorious game for introducing what-if characters and transformations. Since Mission 2 in March 2011, with Future Trunks achieving the Super Saiyan 3 transformation, the game continues throughout the years to explore concepts, bringing new scenarios and stories never seen before.
- People have thought, however, that Super Saiyan 3 Vegeta and Super Saiyan 3 Broly had also originated there. Said transformations of Vegeta and Broly actually date back to Dragon Ball Z: Dragon Battlers.
- A number of models and animations for the characters of this game are similar to that of Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3. New models for characters who did not exist in this game are given new models, emulating that of Budokai 3's.
- Big Bang Mission introduced several new models for its characters, with added detail and new animations.
- Some of the designs for the player avatars in Dragon Ball Heroes are used in promotional artwork and trailers for Dragon Ball Xenoverse.
- Beat and Note are seen by many as the mascots of Heroes due to their popular association with the series and how they've appeared the most out of any of the other avatar characters.
- However, their appearances became less frequent due to the trailers transitioning to a heavy focus on the main story.
- The artwork for the cards often does not accurately represent the character's in-game appearance, including Veku's cards depicting him with a halo which he lacks in-game, the Masked Saiyan often being illustrated wearing armor with regular Bardock's colors, and Hatchiyack and Dr. Lychee both being depicted with their remake appearances when the game uses their original designs.
- This is the first game in the Dragon Ball series to include characters from other forms of media such as One Piece, though they were only present in the game for a limited time. Monkey D. Luffy and Gild Tesoro both appeared as bosses in God Mission 9, with Luffy being a playable ally during the fight against Gild Tesoro.
- The game has featured special collaborations with the Xenoverse series, Dragon Ball Fusions, Dragon Ball FighterZ, and Dragon Ball Legends through the use of characters introduced from those games.
- Other collaborations involve Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot through the use of special in-game items.
- Arale Norimaki and Obotchaman are the only characters playable in previous Dragon Ball Z: Data Carddass series games to not be playable in this game. Arale, however, is available as a summonable character.
- In Japan, the card voted Number 1 from every card in existence was Robelu, surpassing that of Vegito Blue, Grand Priest, and even Yamcha.
- Aside from Dokkan Battle and technically Ultimate Tenkaichi, the avatars have yet to have a playable role in a Dragon Ball game.
- The series follows a bi-monthly release schedule, which was briefly broken in March 2020 when Big Bang Mission 2 was delayed a month due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. To balance the schedule and allow a mission to be released in the same month as the game's 10th anniversary, Big Bang Mission 5 was released a month early in November 2020.
- Furthermore, in order for players to practice social distancing, the arcades were separated with thin, plastic borders. They were also advised to wear masks and sanitize at all times.
- Despite its massive following and eventual global translation through World Mission, the series has yet to have an official English dub. This holds true for the anime.
