The story mode of Dragon Ball: Raging Blast is called Dragon Battle Collection. Players can play through the original events of the Dragon Ball Z story, but their actions in battle can change the story in many different ways, with many different tasks available to try in the story mode, such as "Do not get hit by a Super Attack", which gives the player more points to unlock additional content such as costumes, music, and additional story mode battles. Over 100 "Battle Frames" can be selected at any time, regardless of chronological order to which they appear in the series. Each Battle Frame is usually shown with an inconic moment in the battle itself. The story spans from the Saiyan Saga up until the Kid Buu Saga. Battle Frames also include "what-if" scenarios that never occurred in the series, and completing all of them will unlock a special ending. Players can practice and hone their skills in the "Dojo". Players can also partake in the "Super Battle Trial" single-player modes. The online mode features a 16-player "Budokai Tournament", single or team battle VS, and a spectator mode where players can rate the fighters. Split-screen multiplayer is also featured for the game.

Dragon Ball: Raging Blast (ドラゴンボール レイジングブラスト Doragon Bōru Reijingu Burasuto) is a 2009 video game released for the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 consoles developed by Spike and published by Bandai Namco.

It is the second Dragon Ball game on the high definition seventh generation of consoles, as well as the third Dragon Ball game released on Microsoft's Xbox brand. A Limited Edition was released, however it is exclusive to Europe and Australia. Its sequel is Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2.

Overview

RB gameplay basic

Dragon Ball: Raging Blast was first mentioned in Bandai Namco's 2009 fiscal report. It was revealed that a new game was in development for both Xbox 360 and PS3, and that the game will be released the second quarter of the 2009-2010 fiscal year.[1] A full announcement was featured May 2009 issue of V Jump magazine. The issue included several screenshots showing that the game contained gameplay elements from the Budokai Tenkaichi series, polished character models, and revealed the official title.

On October 22, 2009, a demo was released on Xbox Live, however only in the United States.[2] The PlayStation Network Demo was released later that day as well, also only available in the United States. In the following week, the demo was available as well in the European region. The demo features three characters to choose from: Goku (Base, Super Saiyan), Piccolo, and Raditz. Each character has two costumes to choose from and the playable stage is "Plains".

The game is one of the first games in the Dragon Ball franchise to be published by Bandai Namco in North America, as the company would acquire the gaming license from previous license holder Atari in July of that same year. Free downloadable content packs were revealed shortly after release and were released until April 2010. As of now, they have all been released and are available for download.

Gameplay

Dragon Ball: Raging Blast features high definition graphics and audio, fully destructible environments, and advanced character features. Characters now have features such as facial expressions. Battle-damage has returned, and characters appear with damaged clothing as well as scratches and bruises after a large amount of health is lost. Players can now also utilize a new feature called "Super Rising", which allows players to quickly fly upwards throughout large-scale battle stages. Players can also fight together, freely switching between each other and assisting one another with supporting actions. Players can customize characters using item and Super Attack customization. "D-Points" can also be earned to unlock abilities and items. The game will feature 60 fps (frames per second), both online and off. There are ten stages to battle on, all of which are far larger than those of the Budokai Tenkaichi games . An environmental "sky change" effect is in the game, which occurs when a character of great power apparently powers up. "Ultimate Attack" cut scenes are also featured.

New features

Vegeta traps Goku, Raging Blast

Vegeta traps Goku in a mountain utilizing the new environmental feature where players can trap enemies into landmasses and then inflict further damage

New combination moves can now be utilized, allowing two characters to launch special attacks. There are also brand new environmental features such as new advanced interactions with the grounds of the battlefield. Enhanced destructible features such as rocks, mountains, and even the ground below are now destructible. The ground can now split, shatter, or just be obliterated. Players can now also throw enemies into rocks or other environment features, causing the opponent to become trapped, defenseless, and unable to move.[3] The capsule system from previous games also returned, allowing players to customize their characters.

Cancel System

This game features a feature called "The Cancel". Like the Budokai series this game has a feature where you cancel out of animations to do attacks, but it's not quite the same. Some basic cancels are canceling into melee and into Super/Ultimate Attacks. Each character has their own cancels that are different from most characters. The game itself does not tell you the cancels, as you must find them yourself.

Game Modes

The online mode features a 16-player "Budokai Tournament", single or team battle VS, and a spectator mode where players can rate the fighters.[4] Split-screen multiplayer is also featured for the game.

What If Scenarios

Training with Himself

Seven years after the Cell Games, Future Trunks returns to the past and finds his Childhood self and have a battle. Kid Trunks transforms into a Super Saiyan and Future Trunks is amazed at such a young warrior transforming into a Super Saiyan. Future Trunks then transforms into a Super Saiyan too and eventually wins. He later returns to his time after telling his child self to train with his father.

Fusion vs. Potara Part 1 - Super Gogeta

Somehow, Gogeta fights Vegito, on the Sacred World of the Kais with Goten and Trunks watching. Trunks tells Goten they should one day fight their dads in a Fusion battle. Trunks then warns Goten that a Potara fusion is permanent, but Goten does not mind too much as that would mean Trunks would be Goten's brother.

In the battle, Gogeta wins and says "It seems that our fused form from the Fusion Dance was a bit stronger." Vegito then says "Your power was unbelievable but I won't lose the next one. Lets have a rematch right now!" Unfortunately, the Fusion begins to wear off and Gogeta answers "Hold your horses! I'm sorry but my Fusion is about to wear off. We won't be able to have a rematch for a while." Vegito then says "Hmph what a pain. It looks like the Potara transformation is actually the more powerful Fusion. I win by default!" Gogeta answers "Hey now, that's not fair", leaving the true outcome inconclusive.

Fusion vs. Potara Part 2 - Super Vegito

Somehow, Vegito fights Gogeta, on the Sacred World of the Kai. Kibito Kai and the Old Kai watch the battle with Elder Kai stating that the Potara fusion is more effective when Kibitoshin asks who will win. Eventually, Vegito wins and says "It seems the Elder was right. The Potara Earring's effects are stronger than those of the Fusion technique". Gogeta then says "You got me. I gotta admit, the Potara Earrings are really something" and then he asks "But you're going to have to stay that way forever. How do you plan on explaining this to Chi-Chi and Bulma?" which Vegito is worried about saying "Erm... well... I... Gah...". Gogeta then says "Well you can all be one big happy family that should be nice right?" in which Vegito answers "I'm not sure they'll go along with that".

Grandfather Against Grandson

After being caught in Frieza's Supernova, Bardock has a vision of his son Kakarot fighting Frieza. Then, he sees another future vision: Kakarot's youngest son, Goten, and he fights him. Bardock defeats Goten and then fights Gohan. After defeating both of them, he is glad to have fought his grandsons and seen how strong they are. Gohan then tells Goten that he thinks that the person they fought was their grandfather and comments on how similar he looks to Goten.

Yamcha's Resolve

During the three years the Dragon Team train to battle the Androids, Vegeta lives at Capsule Corporation and spends some time with Bulma. Yamcha believes that Vegeta is trying to steal Bulma away from him and challenges him to a battle. If Yamcha wins, Vegeta must stay away from Bulma. Yamcha wins but is then challenged by Future Trunks who tells him if Yamcha marries Bulma then Trunks will not exist. Yamcha defeats him and due to this believes himself to be the universe's strongest warrior (despite not fighting his Super Saiyan form) and thinks the girls will fall in love with him because of his power. Trunks then knows history will not be altered as Yamcha "was always a big playboy."

The Audition

Captain Ginyu tells Burter and Jeice to hold auditions for a sixth member of the Ginyu Force mercenary squadron. Dodoria is the seventh entrant and is challenged to fight Burter to see if he is worthy of being a Ginyu force member. Burter asks why Dodoria would want to join the Ginyu if he is already a top-ranking official. Dodoria would prefer to be aligned with the Ginyu and simultaneously be Frieza's General. Burter easily wins and the next entry is called. Zarbon is the eighth entrant and is challenged by Jeice. Jeice and Burter find it interesting that both Frieza's top elites would want to join the Ginyu mercenary squadron. When being beaten, Zarbon proceeds to transform. However, Jeice remains happy due to securing his position as the most handsome member of Frieza's entire army. Jeice then continues to beat Zarbon and says that they will need to report to Ginyu that there was not anyone powerful enough to join the Ginyu Force. Burter and Jeice wonder if Ginyu's planning on graduating one member from the team. Jeice and Burter then accidentally reveal to each other their inner desire for a solo debut.

Ginyu Force Shakeup Part 1 - The Fiendish Captain's Training

The real reason Captain Ginyu wanted a 6th member of the Ginyu Force is because he believes his current team to be too weak. He then proceeds to defeat Burter, Jeice and Guldo before firing them. Recoome then arrives become enraged with Ginyu and demands a battle where Ginyu must resign his position if he loses.

Ginyu Force Shakeup Part 2 - Ginyu Demoted

Recoome fights Captain Ginyu and demands Ginyu to resign if beaten. Recoome is nowhere near as strong as Ginyu, but Vegeta appears and defeats Ginyu, wanting him out of the way because of him being a "worthless captain." Vegeta defeats him and proceeds to become Captain Vegeta of the now Vegeta Force.

Vegeta's Humilation

Vegeta has a nightmare due to not being able to become a Super Saiyan and sees Super Saiyan Future Trunks. Vegeta then defeats him but is then challenged by Gohan who has also become a Super Saiyan. Vegeta once again wins and then fights Super Saiyan Goku. Vegeta wins but is still cursed by the fact he can not become a Super Saiyan and no longer cares about attaining the form.

The Student

When Gohan spends more time training with Piccolo instead of training Videl, she decides to become Piccolo's student. Piccolo has a short fight with her first to test her power and then has her fight Gohan. Videl wins and then asks Piccolo to let her fight Goku and Vegeta. Piccolo is surprised about gaining such a battle eager student and is shocked she wants to fight Vegeta.

The Father-Son Tagteam

Trunks and Goten get into an argument and end up having a fight. Goku tries to intervene and Vegeta tells him not to stop their fight. When Goten cheats by turning into a Super Saiyan, Trunks is overpowered. Vegeta then intervenes and Goku decides the only way to get out of the mess is to fight Vegeta. After a while of fighting, they transform into Super Saiyans and Vegeta wins the fight. He tells Trunks he does not have to apologize until hearing that the reason the kids fought was because Trunks stole Goten's candy. Trunks apologizes and the two children become friends again. Even Vegeta apologized to Goku for the trouble Trunks had caused.

The Challenge

After the battle against Majin Buu, peace returns to the world. One day, Goku receives a few letters challenging him to a fight. He first fights Krillin who is feeling nostalgic from their training with Master Roshi as children. Goku soon wins and fights his next challenger, Piccolo. Piccolo remembers the day they fought at the World Martial Arts Tournament and wants to fight him again. Goku eventually wins, and Piccolo is not surprised knowing that Goku was always his greatest rival. Gohan fights next wanting some training with his father. Gohan soon transforms into a Super Saiyan 2 as does Goku who easily overpowers his son. Super Saiyan 2 Vegeta then appears wanting to decide their interrupted battle before Majin Buu was awoken. Goku eventually wins, and says he wants to fight everybody another day when they are stronger.

Buu the Bodyguard

Mr. Satan decides to give Good Buu the job of being Videl's bodyguard and keeping all men away from her. When Yamcha talks to Videl, Buu attacks him thinking he's hitting on Videl. Gohan then appears wanting to talk to Videl who tells him to stay away from Buu. Buu defeats Gohan but goes away when Videl shouts at him. At that moment, Kid Buu somehow appears and Videl is helpless against him. Good Buu then appears to help her and amazingly defeats Kid Buu. Videl then promises Buu some chocolate making it a good day for Buu.

The Top Earthling Tournament

A tournament is held to show who is the strongest earthling. Krillin takes on many challengers, battling Videl first. Mr. Satan states Videl can easily beat a nerd like Krillin, to which he responds by saying Mr. Satan should have entered and that Mr. Satan would be knocked out before he would have a chance to attack. Krillin easily beats Videl, then is challenged. Chiaotzu says that Tien Shinhan will win the tournament and that even he can beat Krillin. Chiaotzu is proven wrong when he is defeated. Yamcha then fights Krillin in a battle to prove who Master Roshi's strongest human student is. Krillin wins before battling his final opponent, Tien. Krillin wins the match and is told that he is the strongest earthling. Krillin then asks if Tien is even an earthling at all.

Freedom

After being defeated by Goku and landing on Earth, Broly is found by Dr. Gero. Years later, Gero is confronted by Super Saiyan Vegeta. When Gero realizes how powerful Vegeta is, he makes Broly fight him. Broly is in Super Saiyan form and is controlled with Gero's crown, similar to the one Paragus used to control him. Broly defeats Vegeta, but when Gero orders Broly to find Goku, Broly breaks the crown and turns into a Legendary Super Saiyan and kills Gero, saying that nobody will control him. Broly shouts for Kakarot to fight him. Super Saiyan Goku then fights him but is beaten. With Goku dead, Broly proceeds to destroy the Earth.

The Tag Team Battle

Tien Shinhan and Chiaotzu believe themselves to be the ultimate tag team. Burter and Jeice arrive to try and prove them wrong and say that Chiaotzu is holding Tien back. After fighting Burter for a while, Chiaotzu switches with Tien who defeats both of the Ginyu force members. Gotenks then appears wanting to prove that a fusion is the best tag team. Chiaotzu fights him for a while before he switches with Tien who amazingly defeats him. Vegeta and Goku are the final tag team to fight them, although Vegeta states he will fight them by himself and would never team up with Kakarot. After a while, Tien switches with Chiaotzu who defeats Vegeta. Tien then fights Goku and manages to defeat him proving that he and Chiaotzu make the ultimate tag team.

The World Tournament - Couple's Division

The World Martial Arts Tournament holds a division for couples. The finalists are Krillin and Android 18 against Gohan and Videl. Krillin fights Gohan for a while before they both switch out. Android 18 then defeats Videl and Gohan. Krillin is glad he proved that they are the best couple but #18 says she was just interested in gaining the prize money, to which Krillin is upset by.

The Strongest Super Saiyan 3

Vegeta finally achieves Super Saiyan 3 and throws out a challenge to any one else who has reached the form. Gotenks battles him first and is quickly defeated. Broly then appears, who had just achieved the form, but Vegeta also manages to defeat him. He then moves on to facing Goku in an ultimate battle between the two rivals. Eventually, Vegeta defeats Goku and is dubbed "The Strongest Super Saiyan 3."

Dragon Ball: Raging Blast was met with generally mixed reviews from game critics. IGN stated "Sure, there's lots of content, but the stories are poorly told (which alienates people who don't already know them) and the gameplay mechanics have numerous, numerous problems." It gave both versions of the game a 62/100.[7]

GameSpot gave the game a 60/100 and stated "The huge assortment of characters, stories, costumes, and other aspects of Dragon Ball lore cannot hide how shallow and uninspired the fighting mechanics are."[8]

GameDaily reviewed the game as a 50/100, and noted that "While Raging Blast has a likable presentation and lots of options, the stale fighting and infuriating camera are hard to ignore."[9]

TeamXbox awarded the Xbox 360 version of Raging Blast with a 74/100 and stated, "While the game’s got plenty of flaws that will bruise the experience for the average gamer, fans will likely look past the technical issues and enjoy reliving the series again…at least long enough for the next inevitable Dragon Ball game to come along."[10]

PlayStation: The Official Magazine (US) awarded the PS3 version of Raging Blast a 60/100 and stated "So, baring the possible glory or failure of Raging Blast's online mode, this is a rather predictable entry in the tale of Goku and Gohan."

The game had sold 700,000 copies across Japan, Europe and the United States by March 2010.[11]

Trivia

 • Even though Raging Blast revolves only around Dragon Ball Z, it is called "Dragon Ball: Raging Blast" and not "Dragon Ball Z: Raging Blast". This is in contrast to other Dragon Ball Z games, especially those with "Dragon Ball Z" in their title but with characters from all spectrums of the Dragon Ball universe (the preceding Budokai Tenkaichi series being a prime example).
 • This is the second game to be exclusively released on the high definition next-gen consoles, the first being Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit in 2008.
 • On August 19, 2009, a Super Saiyan 3 version of Broly was shockingly revealed as one of the two bonus characters in the game. A Super Saiyan 3 version of Vegeta would follow suit as the second shocking bonus character on October 8.
 • DLC is available for both versions of the game, making this the first Dragon Ball game to receive any downloadable content.[12][13]
 • Super Saiyan 3 Broly and Vegeta were both said to be game exclusive characters. However their first appearances were in the Japanese-only arcade game Dragon Ball Z: Dragon Battlers, released in Spring 2009.[14]
 • In two Japanese commercials for Raging Blast, the commentator mistakenly says "Dragon Ball: Raising Flast" in English.
 • For reasons unknown, Gohan does not have his Ultimate form, even though Super Buu has his Gohan absorbed state. However, Ultimate Gohan is briefly seen during Super Buu's transformation into his Gohan absorbed state, although his face is not shown.
 • In an early trailer, Broly was stated as "Legendary Super Saiyan 3", but for unknown reasons, this name was simply changed to "Super Saiyan 3."
 • This was the last Dragon Ball game to feature Daisuke Gōri's voice acting in the Japanese voices before the voice actor's tragic death.
 • It is stated that Future Trunks did receive his sword from Tapion. This is the second such claim in official media.
 • There is 1 ultimate attack in this game that can be changed with different items, this move is the Spirit Bomb used by Goku in his base form. The different forms are Spirit Bomb, Large Spirit Bomb and the Super Spirit Bomb.
 • This is the last Dragon Ball game to use the original FUNimation DBZ cast. All the games released after this one use the Dragon Ball Z Kai voice cast instead.
 • Some of Raging Blast's cutscenes were recycled in Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi, with the old voices and new voices of certain characters swapping around randomly.
 • While wearing his regular costume, Goku's hair as a Super Saiyan is exactly the same as his hair in his Super Saiyan 2 form. While in his alternate costumes, Goku's hair as a Super Saiyan has its proper design. This is the same for the game's sequel.
