A Dirty Magazine (スケベ本 Sukebe Bon) is a type of book with images that mostly involves women completely nude, partially nude or performing pornographic acts while nude.

Overview

Master Roshi

Master Roshi reads a dirty magazine

Master Roshi has a huge collection of them, which he is commonly seen viewing throughout the series. Ninja Murasaki of the Red Ribbon Army is also seen to have a collection hidden in a hut on his floor in Muscle Tower. It is also revealed that Dr. Brief collects them, even though he is married; Bulma accidentally switches capsule cases with him and ends up seeing the magazines in one of the capsules in it during the General Blue Saga.

Krillin gave one of these to Roshi in order for him to take him as his pupil. Krillin had several more that Master Roshi found after Krillin fell through the Flying Nimbus. In "Until We Meet Again", Krillin berates Roshi for still reading them, only for Roshi to respond that Krillin reads them as well.

Pilaf showing Piccolo dirty magazinrs

Pilaf showing King Piccolo dirty magazines

In his airship, Emperor Pilaf once showed dirty magazines to King Piccolo. However, only Animal-Type Earthlings were shown in it rather than Human-type Earthlings indicating dirty magazines featuring Animal-Type Earthlings exist as well as the ones that normally feature Human-type Earthlings (this makes sense given Earth is home to different types of Earthlings with presumably different tastes).

Old Kai also reads dirty magazines. As a matter of fact, one of Goku's first bribes to him was loaning him some of Master Roshi's magazines, much to Gohan shock and Shin's chagrin. However, he indicated during that time that he had no real need for them to be satisfied due to him using omniscient vision to watch girls play volleyball on the beach/strip down (depending on the version).

The dirty magazine shown by Old Kai to Kibito Kai in Dragon Ball Super

In Dragon Ball Super, after the third destructive shockwave produced by Goku and Beerus' Energy Clash, Old Kai shows Kibito Kai one of his Dirty magazines depicting a scantly clad blonde woman as a final goodbye (as he believes the universe is about to end), only for Kibito Kai to knock it away in anger to Old Kai's shock.

Video Game Appearances

Budokai magazine

The magazine that normally cannot be seen in Budokai

In Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku, the magazines must be collected and returned to Roshi at the beginning of the game. In Dragon Ball Z: Budokai, a magazine can be seen laying on a table in front of Kame House in the first level's opening cutscene. The cover of said magazine cannot be seen, but with emulator tools, the game camera can be moved to see that the cover is, unsurprisingly, a nude woman (albeit blurry). In Dragon Ball: Origins, Krillin uses the dirty magazines as a bribe to become Master Roshi's student, just like he did in the anime/manga. In Dragon Ball: Origins 2, in the bonus level 3-5, Dr. Brief wants Bulma to retrieve the dirty magazine capsule Bulma left on General Blue's Camp island; it is revealed in this level that the magazines were found by Master Roshi, who hid them on the island because he can't read them at Kame House. They appear under the title Naughty Book in Dragon Ball Z: Legendary Super Warriors.

In Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, during the animated epilogue after Mira's defeat, Elder Kai can be seen reading a dirty magazine while walking around Conton City's Recreation Plaza. However he is so focused on his book that the doesn't notice that Beerus is right in his path causing him to bump into the God of Destruction. Beerus notes he almost dropped his food and angrily wonders who it was before noticing it was Elder Kai and calms down, though he gets angry when Elder Kai grumbles about Beerus' presence still holding a grudge for Beerus sealing him inside the Z Sword, loud enough that Beerus is able to hear him. He prepares to destroy Elder Kai, though fortunately Whis defuses the situation by offering them some food which they both try.

In Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, certain characters can be occasionally seen reading Dirty magazines in various places. Oolong can be found reading one at certain points in East Ravine and the Southeast Islands. In Saiyan Saga Episode 1 Sub Story "Master Roshi's Prized Possession", Master Roshi finds that his dirty magazine has gone missing and suspects that Turtle has hidden it some where. He asks Goku to talk to Turtle to find out where he hid it, which Goku agrees with and notes Roshi hasn't changed when he reveals it's a swimsuit photograph collection. Goku asks Bulma if she's seen it but she doesn't no where his dirty book is and he asks about Turtle whom she says she saw behind Kame House. Goku talks to Turtle who refuses to say where it is and that Master Roshi needs to learn self control, but accidentally slips and says it belongs in the ground, causing Goku to realize he buried it somewhere. Goku looks around and finds a spot which he digs up to find the girly book which Goku returns to Master Roshi who is thrilled to have it back and says he was right to take Goku on as a student and that he's counting on him helping out when that troublesome Turtle hides it again ending the Sub Story. Additionally during the Frieza Saga Episode 1 Sub Story "Wild Imagination", Krillin can be found by Gohan reading one at Kame House. Gohan asks Krillin what he is doing and Krillin thinking fast tells him that he's been researching a new way for two people to do Mental Simulation Training and suggests they practice it before the trip to Namek (fortunately Krillin had already picked up the technique beforehand). After Gohan's attempt to imagine Krillin fails forcing him to fight an image of Nappa due to becoming distracted, he manages to succeed in creating an image of Krillin. After they spar in their minds, Gohan wants to go again. so Krillin tries imagining Gohan but starts thinking about the magazine and loses focus causing him to imagine a hot girl in a red bikini. Gohan sees it and Krillin tries to suggest Master Roshi sent the image claiming he can do it from very far away. However Gohan doesn't buy it so Krillin is forced to come clean and ends their training session.

During the Cell Saga Episodes 8-10 Sub Story: "Crane School Scouting", Master Shen mistakenly gets the idea that Master Roshi is able to draw in so many talented students due to bribing them with Dirty magazines (which is humorous considering Krillin past attempt to bribe Roshi with Dirty magazines) and buys one in order to try in lure in new students for the Crane School. However his brother Cyborg Tao isn't convinced it'll work and prefers to simply use force by threatening them with his custom Skull Robo Type 1 known Tao Pai Pai Machine. When Super Saiyan Full Power Gohan approaches them wondering what they are up to since the last time he encountered them was when his father was still training on Yardrat. Upon realizing the boy is Gohan, Master Shen tries to convince bribe him with the magazine claiming he'll give him plenty more if he becomes his student. When Gohan refuses due to his pure heart making him lack interest in such things (and due to his mother's strict upbringing), Master Shen reveals he mistakenly believes that Gohan is a student of Master Roshi and doesn't give Gohan a chance to correct him. Realizing his plan failed, Master Shen resorts to his brother's plan to force Gohan to become their student, but they are no match for the young Super Saiyan who makes quick work of the robots, one of which launched towards Cyborg Tao who says he doesn't want to get blown up again referring to the explosion that lead him to become a cyborg only to be hit by the robot which explodes leaving Tao's fate unclear. Gohan then explains to Master Shen that he isn't Master Roshi's student and explains how he trained under Piccolo, with Krillin, and under his father, before noting he really doesn't belong to one particular school. Suddenly Master Roshi appears and backs Gohan up, saying that martial artists of the current generation aren't bond to one particular martial arts philosophy. Master Roshi then reveals why he is in the area as he reveals he was planning to buy a Dirty magazine in Orange City but Master Shen bought the last copy of the volume he was looking for (though ironically due to the same model being recycled it looks the same as every other Dirty magazine in the game). The ever perverted Master Roshi even humorously tells Master Shen he'll become a student of the Crane School after overhearing his sales pitch to Gohan. However Master Shen declares he would never allow such a thing calling Roshi a pervert only for him to retort that his old rival is one to for buying the magazine, before demanding that Master Shen just let him have a little peek at it, but again Master Shen refuses simply out of spite for his old rival, causing Gohan to calmly walk away glad to be done with the whole odd affair.

As part of the -Trunks- The Warrior of Hope DLC during the Episode 3 Sub Story "Rest in Peace, Krillin", Future Trunks encounters Future Master Roshi mumbling to himself inside Kame House (which he had since moved back to after the Androids were defeated). He asks what he was mumbling about and Future Roshi explains that he wants to finally hold a memorial for Future Krillin's spirit as he was unable to get around to it in the aftermath of Krillin's death due to the threat of the Android, but now that their gone he can finally do so, though unfortunately he wants to give a specific item that Future Krillin cherished which is currently inside a Capsule somewhere at the bottom of the ocean somewhere around Kame House though he can't seen to locate it. Future Trunks suggests he could have his mother Future Bulma make a Capsule Detector as the Capsule Corporation is her company after all so she should have no trouble creating a detector for one. Master Roshi is little nervous about Bulma being involved though cryptically says she's probably forget about "it" before agreeing to Trunks' plan. After collecting the materials for his mother, she supplies Future Trunks with a Capsule Detector though points out it has a limited range so he'll have to narrow it down somehow. Future Trunks returns to Kame House and asks Future Roshi where to start looking and Future Roshi points him to a spot which he claims is in the direction of where he saw it thrown into the ocean, piquing Future Trunks' interest in how it ended up being thrown. Future Trunks finds the still fictional Old Capsule next to a sunken ship. Back at Kame House, Future Trunks inquires about what is in the Capsule and Future Roshi says he's old enough to know about such things. He explains that it contains his and Future Krillin's "dreams" (stopping himself from saying "dream girls"). As he is about to show Trunks the Capsule's dubious contents, Future Bulma tells him to stop. She tells off Future Roshi for trying to show her son such filth, before explaining to her son what happened in the past regarding said Old Capsule triggering a flashback. In the flashback which seemingly takes place either during the Saiyan Saga or before the trip to Namek, Future Krillin and Future Roshi are behind Kame House looking at a dirty magazine, both pointing at which one is their dream girl. Unfortunately Future Bulma catches them red handed. Future Krillin and Future Roshi try to convince her it was an martial arts anatomy lesson, though she sees right through their lies and due to her negative attitude regarding such reading materials (which had apparently gotten worse as a result of her discovering the Capsule containing her father's Dirty magazine stash) she in her rage grabs up Master Roshi and Krillin's collections of Dirty magazines and stuffs then into a Capsule which she then throws into the ocean where her son would find it years later unaware of its contents. After the flashback ends, Future Bulma finishes telling her son the story and Future Trunks realizes the Old Capsule contains a bunch of Dirty magazines. Future Bulma then admonishes Future Roshi again for trying to show them to her son not wanting him to end up an old pervert like him, though Future Roshi says she should be proud of he were to end up like him. This leads the two getting into an argument, while Future Trunks is left hanging though fortunately Future Turtle appears and offers Future Trunks a drink noting that they'll be at it for a while. Eventually Future Bulma tries to take the Old Capsule from Future Roshi who does his best to save the collection. One of the magazines gets soaked by his sweat during his efforts. It is then revealed that Future Roshi was indeed sincere about offering up one of the magazines to Future Krillin's spirit which ends up being the one that got sweat soaked. After Future Bulma leaves without Trunks, Future Roshi thanks him for his help and believes Future Krillin's spirit will be pleased with his offering. Future Trunks however notes to himself that he didn't realize Krillin/Future Krillin had that kind of side to him. Meanwhile in Other World, Future Krillin (though only his Halo and bald head are visible) sneezes and assumes that someone must be saying good things about him.

Trivia

MaleMagazine

Master Roshi reading a homosexual magazine

  • A magazine that features males was among the dirty magazines Krillin gave to Master Roshi and the word "Homo" can be seen on it.
  • Bulma is extremely embarrassed that her father collects them, despite the fact he is married.
    • In Dragon Ball Origins 2, Bulma is even mortified by the idea of someone finding her father's dirty magazines (when she discovered her father had wrote his name in them) that she returns to retrieve their capsule in a sub-level and she is forced to search for it in bad weather for a long time before she finds it. However, unbeknownst to her, they were found by Master Roshi who apparently keeps them as his own "private" collection only to be angry when he can't find the capsule as he notes the magazines were the highest quality stuff he'd ever seen (Dr. Briefs was apparently able to afford high-end magazines due to his immense wealth).
      • In Kakarot, Future Bulma's dislike for Dirty magazines (primarily those that feature naked women) has apparently intensified in adulthood as she becomes enraged when she finds Future Krillin and Future Master Roshi looking at a Dirty magazine pointing out their dream girls. When they try to cover it up with a flimsy excuse she becomes so enraged that she proceeds to grab up their collections and stuff them into a Capsule before throwing it into the ocean where it lands next to a shipwreck. The Capsule sits there for several years until Future Trunks inadvertently finds it unaware of what it contains. However Future Bulma remembers about the Old Capsule after having built the Capsule Detector that Trunks used to find it, causing her to race over to Kame House in her airplane to prevent Future Roshi from exposing her son to its contents (referring to the Dirty magazines contained within as smutty and filth) out of fear that it could lead her son to become a pervert like Future Roshi despite the fact that he was an adult by that point. This fear likely stems from various embarrassing incidents from her past involving perverted individuals like Future Roshi, Future Oolong, and even Future Krillin, along with the knowledge that her own father collected them, which may cause her to fear that her son could develop similar interests like his maternal grandfather.
    • In real life, it is not uncommon for married men to collect dirty magazines (at least before the raise of the internet which rendered dirty magazines for the most part obsolete).
    • In the same scene, Goku also expressed confusion about why the girls were naked and yet not taking baths, and also feeling sorry for them when he thought they were too poor to afford clothes, owing to his more innocent nature and thus not understanding what was actually going on in the magazine.
      • Goku himself has no sense of shame when it comes to being nude himself which is probably why he is more confused than shocked by their nudity. However as he gets older he does recognize that dirty magazines are perverted and recognizes perversion in others as he notes similarities between Master Roshi and Old Kai, even trying to bribe him with the promise of some of Master Roshi's magazines but Old Kai declines. However Goku himself retains a pure heart free of perversion in additon to being married (In Dragon Ball Super, Goku himself notes he is attracted to Chi-Chi's feisty strong willed personality) and having children.
  • In the FUNimation dub for Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan, Bulma implies that Master Roshi's antics during the Hanami party were due to someone hiding Master Roshi's magazine collection and his going mad as a result, in order to cover up that he had gotten severely drunk during the party.
