The Demon Realm (大魔界 Dai-makai, "Great Demon Realm"), also called Dark Demon Realm (暗黒魔界 Ankoku Makai),[2][3] and sometimes the Devil World (悪魔界 Akumakai) is a location in the Dragon Ball series. It is described as a chaotic and destructive physical plane opposite of the known universe and is composed of three different Demon Worlds (魔界 Makai).

Overview[]

Hallway to the Demon World

Hallway to the Demon World

The Demon Realm is a point of contention across various Dragon Ball media due to vastly different portrayals, especially due to Dragon Ball Heroes, where the Demon Realm first began to take real prominence as a location. Generally, it is the homeland of the Majin and a hideout for multiple villainous and corrupt individuals.[4] In the Demon Realm, magic has more influence than science.[5]

Originally, the area accessed in early Dragon Ball filler via the Demon Realm Gate was said to be located in the Other World of Universe 7.[6][2]

The first real origins of the Demon Realm begin with Dragon Ball Heroes. During 75 Million Before Age, the wicked wizard and Supreme Kai of Time candidate Mechikabura was banished to a shadowy world located at the bottom tip of the universe and beyond time itself after his machinations came to light. Mechikabura would continue to scheme, creating what would eventually become the Demon Realm and becoming its first Dark King, worshipped and assisted by other evil wizards such as Demigra who were also cast into the Demon Realm.[7][8] During the events of the Dark Empire Saga, the new Supreme Kai of Time Chronoa would temporarily seal herself, Mechikabura, and the entirety of the Demon Realm in the Crack of Time, effectively removing it from history, before it was eventually restored.[1]

The alternate structure of the Demon Realm is established in Dragon Ball Daima. Unlike in Heroes, it is located beyond the established multiverse and is divided into three Demon Worlds, with the Third atop the Second, which is atop the First.[9] The Second Demon World also contains several other planets, such as the original home planets of the Namekians and the Glind.[10] All three Demon Worlds are connected by the Demon Realm Tunnel. Conventionally, to travel to and from the Demon Realm, one must travel using giant, fish-like entities known as Sir Warp, who operate a dimension that serves as a waypoint between destinations.[11]

In the Second Demon World, a particular Namekian named Neva created a set of Dragon Balls as a sort of prize to reward Namekians for their efforts. However, due to villains in the Demon Realm catching wind of their power and using them for foolish purposes, Neva opted to create the three Tamagamis, terrifyingly powerful warriors whose duty was to guard the Dragon Balls and test the strength and wits of potential warriors through a trial. Due to these new obstacles, a long time would pass before anyone could get a wish granted.[10][12] Due to unscrupulous folk from the First and Third Demon Worlds had been traveling into the Second to cause havoc, Neva also created barriers between the Demon Worlds, sealing off the Demon Realm Tunnel to protect his people and their peaceful neighbors. In the end, though, most Namekians left for the outside world.[10][13][14][15] This also resulted in Sir Warp being established as a new transport system.

Rymus, the Super Majin who was responsible for creating the multiverse

According to Daima, a Good Supreme Demon King once sought to expand the reach of the Demon Realm people and ordered the Super Majin Rymus to create a multitude of universes for Demon Realmers to explore. However, his successor Abura was cruel and unjust, and limited passage to and from the Demon World, presumably due to enforcing PIN numbers as a new requirement for traveling via Sir Warp.[11][14] Abura's rule was presumably enforced by his possession of a powerful artifact known as the Evil Third Eye, though it was lost during his reign. Around this time, various Demon Realmers fled to the outside world to escape his rule, including the Namekians.[10][13][14] At some point, the witch Marba created Majin Buu as per the wizard Bibidi's request, though Buu was uncontrollable and rampaged through the Demon Realm, before he and Bibidi departed for the outside world to cause further havoc.[16]

By the time of the Dragon Ball manga, Abura's son Dabura is the Demon Realm's Supreme Demon King. During his rule, Dr. Arinsu invents the Magic Collars as a means of keeping the demons of the Third Demon World in line. Dabura also attempts to defeat the Tamagami for the Demon Realm Dragon Balls but is unsuccessful.[17] Shortly before the Majin Buu Saga, Bibidi's son/clone Babidi visits the Demon Realm and - using Dabura's wickedness against him - bends the Demon King to his will.[10] During the events on Earth, Babidi succeeds in restoring Majin Buu to life,[18] but Dabura is killed in the ensuing action.[19] Gomah, watching the events unfold in the Demon Realm, ends up succeeding him as Supreme Demon King, leading to the events of Daima.[10]

The Demon Realm is home to evil races - most notably some of the Demon races - who are led by numerous evil beings, including the King of the Demon Realm, Demon Supreme Kais, the God of the Demon Realm: Demigra, as well as its supreme ruler, the Dark King Mechikabura. The strongest evil to have existed in the Demon Realm was Mechikabura in his prime. The realm is outside of the domain of the Supreme Kais, and so not even they are fully aware of what is down there.

In Dragon Ball, Shula, a demon martial artist, who lives in a portion of the Demon Realm located in the afterlife, manages to open a giant entrance to the Demon Realm on Earth (the Demon Realm Gate)[2] and keeps it open for a while by wedging his cursed sword in its door. Goku manages to save Princess Misa, who has been kidnapped and taken to the Demon Realm by Shula. Then, Goku pulls out Shula's sword and closes off the entrance to Demon World.[6]

In Dragon Ball Z, when Babidi asks Dabura if he has any preferences on which planet, he wants to fight Dabura responds "Perhaps a planet similar to this one. I don't want unfair advantages."[20] The area they are transported is called Demon World in Dragon Ball Z: Buu's Fury.

Sometime before Age 850 the Demon Realm was sealed away. It was said that, if the seal was broken, chaos would erupt in the universe. Towa and her Time Breaker army aimed to release the realm, and so she and Mira headed out to collect enough energy to break the seal.

Mechikabura's Tower is located in the Demon Realm and serves as the base for the Dark Empire after Mechikabura is released. During the Dark King Mechikabura Saga it is protected by a barrier powered by six Hell Gates, each connected to a different location in spacetime.

Demon Realm Energy[]

Demigra's Castle

Demigra's Castle

The Demon Realm is filled with a powerful unique type of Dark Energy, this energy greatly powers up members of the Demon Realm Race when they are present in the Demon Realm and allows them to take on the Dark form. This energy is unusable due to the seal on the Demon Realm; however, a special Dark Energy was developed by demons so they could utilize this drastic power up outside of the Demon Realm. It is implied in Xenoverse 2 that exposing the Fruit of the Tree of Might to the Dark Energy of Demon Realm causes it to become corrupted turning it into an enhanced demonic strain of the holy fruit which causes the consumer to swell with dark energy empowering them Villainous Mode and potentially the first stage Supervillain power up.

Video Game Appearances[]

In Dragon Ball Heroes, Xeno Trunks, the Time Patrol, and the avatars fight Towa, Mira and the rest of their forces in the Demon Realm. The Demon Realm's appearance looks similar to Planet Namek, except the trees, grass and sky are purple in color. Mechikabura's Tower appears in the center of the world as a huge tree-like tower with a glowing red core. The outer look of the world looks like two planets combined with red longitudes and latitudes, with both moving at the same time. The Demon Realm also appears as a battle stage in the game. Demigra Castle is also shown to be located in the Demon Realm, which appears as a huge tree with numerous towers at its top.

In Ultimate Mission X, it is revealed that at some point before the Genocide of the Saiyans, King Vegeta discovered the Demon Realm and used it as his secret training location.

In Xenoverse, Towa and Mira alter history to collect enough energy to break the seal on Demon Realm but their actions end up weakening the barrier that separates the Crack of Time from history and the rest of the universe allowing Demigra to send his mirage to continue altering history who assists the Future Warrior so they will eliminate Mira whom Demigra views as competition resulting in the Demigra incident. Towa is forced to stop altering history once Mira is destroyed, though after Demigra's defeat she later finds his core survived and plans to rebuild him as well as gather more energy to strengthen him forcing her to delay her plans to break the seal until Mira is restored.

In Xenoverse 2, Towa enhances the Fruit of the Tree of Might using Dark Energy from Demon Realm and recruit villains from timelines to gather energy to strengthen the reconstructed Mira. She also tries to steal Tokitoki's Egg, after failing to create a replica in order to break the seal on the Demon Realm and see it become one with the rest of the universe in order to create what she poetically calls a "garden of evil, blooming with rage and pain". However, her plans are foiled by Mira who had changed after being defeated by Super Saiyan 3 Bardock in the Time Rift and is absorbed by him. They are then destroyed by the by the Future Warrior and Super Saiyan Blue Goku in Age ???. Before her death, Towa secretly alters history to prevent her brother's death, causing Dabura to avenge her using his nephew and successor Fu. However, Fu has no desire to revive the Demon Realm and assists the Time Patrol in stopping his "uncle" in order to use his experiments for the betterment of the universe.

In Dokkan Battle, the dimensional distortion that Future Trunks and the Time Patrol are investigating removes the barrier separating Demon Realm from the rest of the universe allowing Melee, Gola, and Shula to visit Earth to search for the lost Dabura, the true King of the Demon Realm as Melee notes the Demon Realm has been kingless for hundreds of years suggesting that Shula had unofficially assumed the role during their previous encounter with Goku. Shula, Melee, and Gola are unaware that Dabura had previously fallen under Babidi's control. Melee and Gola attempt to seek Goku's assistance in finding Dabura as they are unfamiliar with Earth which is in turmoil due to the dimensional distortion warping timespace. Shula however pridefully refuses to seek help from Goku and declares the three of them will find the mighty Dabura themselves. Future Trunks, Goku, Gohan, Krillin, Piccolo, and Grand Supreme Kai later find Dabura under Babidi's control while trying to prevent Kid Buu from being freed from the Sealed Ball as the dimensional distortion had altered history leading to Grand Supreme Kai and South Supreme Kai never being absorbed. Future Trunks realizes that Dabura must be the King that Shula was searching for.

By the time of Dragon Ball Fusions, some Namekians had chosen to live in the Demon Realm, however many turned evil as a result of living in the Demon Realm. Additionally, the Offworlder Mirayo is revealed to have been a former Demon Queen who once ruled over Demon Realm. Demon Realm is also home to the Majin Superstar Troupe PePiLu.

In World Mission, the Demon Realm appears as a stage called Demon Realm (Mechikabura's Tower Ver.).
