Yoshio Nagahori (長堀 芳夫 Nagahori Yoshio), known by the stage name Daisuke Gōri (郷里 大輔 Gōri Daisuke), was a voice actor from Tokyo, Japan.

Biography[]

Career[]

Daisuke Gōri was affiliated with Aoni Production. His deep, booming voice lent him to voicing a surprising variety of roles, such as father figures, imposing villains, and comedic roles in anime and video games.

Death[]

On January 17, 2010, at approximately 3:00 P.M., Gōri was found deceased in Nakano, Tokyo by a passerby, who then notified the police. Authorities from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department's Nakano station discovered a note (with the words "I'm sorry" (ごめんね, Gomenne) and "Thank you" (ありがとう, Arigatō) scrawled on it) addressed to his family. Gōri's death was ruled a suicide (he slit his wrists and bled to death), He was 57 years old, at the time of his death, and was three weeks short of his 58th birthday.

The reason behind Gōri's suicide is most likely due to diabetes causing retinal detachment, causing his eyesight to deteriorate. Thus, without being about to watch animations and match his voice to how characters spoke (It is worth mentioning that in North American animation, the voices are recorded prior to animation, but with most anime the animation is done prior to any voice recording). Without sight, Gōri was unable to voice act and continue his passion and love in life, resulting in his tragic death.

Trivia[]

  • It seems Daisuke Gori plays the role of father-like figures: he plays the roles of King Cold, Mr. Satan, Turtle (even though him being a father is anime-only), Blake Smoke Shenron ("father" of the Shadow Dragons), King Yemma and Ox-King. He also plays Dominic in the original anime version of Fullmetal Alchemist.
  • He took over as the voice Captain Dark from Kozo Shioya (albeit his performance was uncredited, as he was credited as Turtle), but did not return as Cold in Episode 195 despite voicing King Yemma in that episode.
