This article is about an incarnation of Goku Black. For other characters with the name Black, see Black (disambiguation).

"I heard about my future from Fu. He said that the limitations of this body will come. And so... As I crossed various timelines, I fought every Goku in them... In order to become familiar with this body. This fight was with the 100th one. Now this perfected body is completely mine."
— The Crimson-Masked Saiyan to Vegeta, near the start of Super Saiyan Rosé vs. Ultra Instinct! A Great Planet-Shaking Battle!.

The Crimson-Masked Saiyan[4] (あかめんのサイヤじん Akaki Kamen no Saiya-jin)[5], or simply just Crimson, is an incarnation of Goku Black (ゴクウブラック Gokū Burakku) whose fate was changed by Fu's intervention.

Crimson sought to fully master his body by killing numerous incarnations of Goku across every timeline, while he also planned to complete Project Zero Mortals by wiping out mortals across every reality. His method was to populate the Pseudo Universe with mortals and then wiping them out, which in turn would kill all of the mortals in Universe 7.

Crimson serves as primarily a major antagonist for most of the New Space-Time War Saga.

Appearance

Crimson's appearance has the same general look as Goku Black, having Goku's body while with a slightly darker skin tone and more defined and sterner eyes, along with a somewhat skinnier physique. His hair is also a noticeably darker shade of black with only four front spikes and three back ones.

Crimson wears a black vest with longer flaps in the front and back secured by a black belt over a dark gray long-sleeved shirt and dark gray baggy pants, along with a black glove on his right hand. He has magenta bracers with white edges on his wrists and shins and magenta armbands with black edges, along with black boots with a dull yellow toe cap and heel that have thin lines going across them. He also wears a Time Breaker Mask with red cracks and has a single visible eye that glows pink. The mask would later be cracked even more throughout the series. Due to the Mask's effect, he possesses red glowing eyes instead of the black ones from his main timeline counterpart, while in Super Saiyan Rosé, instead of them being grey, his eyes still stay red though without glowing.

Personality

Crimson shares his personality with Goku Black, noticeably his obsession with surpassing and eliminating Goku, which led him to seek out and defeat Gokus across various timelines to further augment his own stolen body. He also retains his cunningness, as shown when Shroom revealed that Fu had altered Crimson's future in an attempt to use him for his own plans, but Crimson used this turn of events to manipulate Fu and further his own agenda instead. He retains his drive to eradicate all mortals, as shown when he wiped out all mortal life from multiple timelines, and also when he explained his plans to use the properties of the Pseudo Universe to his advantage in order to wipe out all mortals in Universe 7, which would allow Project Zero Mortals to become a success in both of those Universes. However, Crimson appears to be more sadistic than his original counterpart, as he relished destroying planets outright, while the original Goku Black wasn't known for completely destroying planets while wiping out mortals.

Upon reaching Super Saiyan Rosé Full Power, Crimson expressed a level of arrogance similar to that of his counterparts Future Zamasu and Fused Zamasu, believing in his body's new healing capabilities to reverse any damage dealt to him almost instantaneously. This led him to willingly take a punch to the face from Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta, even though Gogeta was more powerful. Since Crimson shares his personality with the original Goku Black, this may also be due to his masochism, as he seemed to enjoy taking the attack. However, once he was losing against Super Saiyan God SS Evolved Gogeta, he was enraged, refusing to believe that a mortal could overpower him.

Biography

Background

Crimson as Zamasu

Crimson's original identity: Zamasu

Crimson had the same history as Goku Black up until he was contacted by Fu, who informed him of his future and eventual defeat due to the limits of his body; Fu also provided Crimson with a Time Breaker Mask. To prevent this future from happening, Crimson traveled to various parallel timelines (instead of partnering up with Future Zamasu), fighting a total of 99 different versions of Goku and defeating them all, including a few who used Super Saiyan 3, Super Saiyan God, and Super Saiyan Blue in the anime, and the 86th, who used Ultra Instinct Sign in the manga. He did this with the goal of completely mastering his stolen body and unleashing its true potential. It was later revealed that during this time, Crimson set out on resuming Project Zero Mortals, wiping out all mortal life across multiple timelines. It was also revealed that Crimson had manipulated Fu for his own purposes (possibly how he acquired his mask). Afterward, he entered the Pseudo Universe upon its creation, while Fu was locked in the Time Labyrinth with Xeno Vegito.

The Crimson-Masked Saiyan watches the battles below

While Goku and Hearts are in the middle of their battle with Frieza and Meta-Cooler, they are all watched from above by Crimson, who urges them to fight so that they will unknowingly aid his own upcoming plans. He goes on to fuse the Dark Dragon Balls with Frieza and Meta-Cooler. In the anime, he is pleased when Broly joins the fight, remarking that his display was both "horrid and wonderful at the same time", but grows irritated when the Warrior in Black interrupts and takes the Dark Dragon Balls for himself, referring to him as an uninvited guest. When confronted by Goku and Hearts, Hearts is unable to identify Crimson, with the mask obstructing his mind-reading ability. He tells them that everything is fine as long as they continue to battle and denies his affiliation with Fu when questioned by Hearts, before dissipating into thin air.

Sign vs Crimson

The Crimson-Masked Saiyan battles Ultra Instinct Sign Goku

In the manga, Crimson arrives in order to fight Goku, who quickly deciphers his identity as Black. After turning Super Saiyan Rosé, he manages to bring down Goku by landing a clean hit, despite Goku using Ultra Instinct Sign, followed by Super Hearts and Vegeta. After impaling Goku through the shoulder with his Violent Fierce God Slicer, he is interrupted from delivering the finishing blow by an exhausted Evil Saiyan Turles, whom he eliminates with a powerful blast, but not before Turles tosses his Three-Star Dragon Ball to Vegeta.

"Now, start fighting... Mortals!"

In the anime, Crimson is later shown overseeing a battle between Turles, Cumber and Vegeta from afar, encouraging the "mortals" to begin fighting. When Goku and Hearts teleport to Vegeta, they are confronted by Crimson, who reveals himself to be Black by displaying his Super Saiyan Rosé form, much to Goku's surprise. He then fights Super Saiyan Blue Goku and Super Hearts and quickly defeats them. Vegeta attempts to fight Crimson but drops out of Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (Berserk Controlled), due to lack of experience with the form, before he can fire his Galick Gun. Crimson then prepares to finish off both Vegeta and the pseudo–Planet Vegeta with a Holy Light Grenade. However, Goku then confronts Crimson with Ultra Instinct Sign, easily outmatching him and dodging all of his attacks, before quickly landing multiple heavy strikes on him. Crimson quickly recovers and nearly catches Goku off-guard, but Goku manages to avoid the attack and lands a heavy blow on him.

Goku appears behind the Crimson-Masked Saiyan.

Irritated yet delighted at the prospect that he too can grow even stronger with Goku's body (despite having initially thought he had perfected his power by defeating Goku 99 times previously, whom he calls the 100th one), Crimson uses Finger Beams to ravage the Pseudo Universe's Planet Vegeta, taunting Goku to try to survive its destruction, and exclaiming that watching the death of a planet die is always beautiful. However, his irritation grows when he notices Cell arrive to save Goku's group, and he becomes furious when Turles distracts him from firing on them with a blast of his own. After eliminating Turles in retaliation, Crimson mutters angrily about the interference of the dead as well as Demigra and Shroom's meddling, before leaving the pseudo-Planet Vegeta to its fate.

"The lives that disappear here will also disappear in the original universe. In a place like this, I can kill all mortals without suffering from any intervention."
— The Crimson-Masked Saiyan's plan revealed.

The Crimson-Masked Saiyan ascends to Super Saiyan Rosé 3 to outclass the Warrior in Black.

Prior to another planned attack on humanity by Crimson, the Warrior in Black confronts him in battle, surprising Crimson by pulling back his hood to reveal his Goku-like appearance. The two appear to be evenly matched in their base states, before Crimson transforms into Super Saiyan Rosé 2. Upon being questioned by the black-clothed warrior, Crimson reveals that in order for mortals to be born in the Pseudo Universe, he needs to collect energy from other beings, which he does by getting them to fight, and since the Pseudo Universe is linked to Universe 7, once the Pseudo Universe is populated with mortals, he will be able to wipe out all mortals in both the Pseudo Universe and in Universe 7 without any outside interference, since there are no other gods present in the Pseudo Universe, ensuring that Project Zero Mortals will finally be a success. With this, the two begin fighting, with the warrior revealing that his appearance is nearly identical to that of Goku. Crimson is shocked at the appearance of his opponent, and he tries to interrogate him on his identity; however, the black-clothed warrior replies that he has already thrown away his past, including his name. Using the Super Saiyan transformation (with an aura similar to that of Super Saiyan 2), the Warrior in Black is able to fight on-par with Crimson, who is using Super Saiyan Rosé 2, though Crimson retains a slight advantage. However, the black-clothed warrior is quickly outmatched when Crimson ascends into Super Saiyan Rosé 3, placing him at Crimson's mercy. Crimson then attempts to finish off his enemy with a finger beam; however, he is saved by the untimely arrival of Perfected Ultra Instinct Goku and Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (Berserk Controlled) Vegeta. However, he remains confident in his strength.

"Even in this universe...you can't beat me! The energy that's been gathered from this meaningless fight...This light, all of this is MY POWER!"
— Crimson, prior to transforming into his Super Saiyan Rosé Full Power state.

Crimson's mask breaks apart even further.

Goku and Vegeta then battle against Crimson, with the duo easily overwhelming Crimson. Goku then blasts Crimson into a building, before dropping out of his Perfected Ultra Instinct state, having run out of energy. Crimson's mask is damaged in the fight, depriving him of its powerup. However, Crimson absorbs energy from the Pseudo Universe, healing his injuries and restoring his power, boasting that he is unbeatable in the Pseudo Universe. Then, he powers up even further into his Super Saiyan Rosé Full Power state, significantly increasing his power, which also breaks most of the remainder of his Time Breaker Mask. Vegeta attacks Crimson, but he is able to revert Vegeta back into his base state with a single powerful energy blast.

Just then, Meta-Cooler and Frieza show up in their Golden forms to confront him; however, Crimson takes no damage from their attacks, and he uses a Scroll of Eternity to summon King of Destruction Omega Shenron to confront them, who subsequently beats back the brothers with an energy attack. Just then, Cumber and Hearts show up to confront Omega Shenron, allowing Goku and Vegeta to focus on the Crimson-Masked Saiyan. Meanwhile, The Crimson-Masked Saiyan has been gathering energy from the Pseudo Universe, further powering himself up, and also preparing for the creation of the fake mortals. Golden Cooler and Frieza both mount another attack on the Crimson-Masked Saiyan, but he easily repels their attacks and takes them both down at the same time with a couple of ki blasts.

Crimsons rose rage

Crimson's anger towards losing to Gogeta, before inadvertently losing his life to Gogeta's attack.

However, this buys Goku and Vegeta enough time to fuse into Gogeta, who confronts Crimson as a Super Saiyan Blue. While Gogeta is able to overpower Crimson, it is revealed that Crimson's current power allows him to almost instantaneously heal his injuries with energy absorbed from the Pseudo Universe. This forces Gogeta to power up even further into Super Saiyan God SS Evolved, in order to overwhelm Crimson's new healing ability. Gogeta then attacks Crimson with a barrage of attacks, dealing more damage than his body can heal. Crimson is left in shock, exclaiming that his body was not healing his injuries as fast as he thought it should. Angered, Crimson refuses to believe that he can be overpowered by a Saiyan. Crimson charges at Gogeta, but Gogeta dodges the attack and lands a powerful attack on Crimson's face, breaking the remainder of his mask and disintegrating his body, finally putting an end to Crimson and his antagonistic intentions. With Crimson's death, Omega Shenron is returned to the timeline that he came from. In the manga, events play out similarly, though Gogeta defuses before dealing the final blow, but Crimson is killed anyway by a combined energy wave from Goku and the Warrior in Black.

Power

Manga and Anime

Thanks to having the soul of a god, the Saiyan body Crimson possesses has had its limits raised beyond normal.

In the manga, Crimson was said to have defeated and killed 99 incarnations of Goku, at least one of whom was able to use Ultra Instinct Sign. In his Super Saiyan Rosé form, Crimson quickly takes down Ultra Instinct Sign Goku and holds an edge over Super Hearts, he is also able to obliterate Evil Saiyan Turles with one energy wave - though Turles was already injured from prior fighting.

In the anime, as a Super Saiyan Rosé, Crimson is able to defeat Super Saiyan Blue Goku and Super Hearts. He revealed to have previously killed 99 different versions of Goku from different timelines, one even using Super Saiyan Blue. Against Ultra Instinct Sign Goku, he was completely outmatched, with every one of his attacks being avoided by Ultra Instinct Sign Goku. However, once he recovered from Goku's first barrage of attacks, he nearly caught Goku off-guard with an attack of his own, though Goku managed to avoid it. Afterwards, Crimson's power proved able to easily destroy the Pseudo Planet Vegeta with a couple of finger beams.

Later in the anime, against the Warrior in Black, during their first, brief clash, Crimson was able to fight on-par with the Warrior in Black in their respective base states. As a Super Saiyan Rosé 2, Crimson was able to fight on par with the mysterious foe's Super Saiyan power. However, upon using Super Saiyan Rosé 3, Crimson was able to swiftly defeat his opponent. In the manga, Super Saiyan Rosé Crimson is an even match for the Warrior in Black' Super Saiyan form, pressuring him enough to transform into Super Saiyan Rosé 3.

In the anime, when facing Ultra Instinct Goku and Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (Berserk Controlled) Vegeta, Super Saiyan Rosé 3 Crimson was quickly pressured and overwhelmed. However, the effort made Goku run out of energy and drop back out of Ultra Instinct. Upon adjusting to his accumulating power, Crimson was able to evolve his form further, allowing him to quickly defeat Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (Berserk Controlled) Vegeta, and causing him to revert back into his base state. Crimson also proved able to ignore the combined assault of Golden Frieza and Golden Meta-Cooler, which didn't do any damage to him. Against Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta, Crimson was at a slight disadvantage, but he was able to compensate, thanks to his vastly accelerated healing powers, which healed his injuries almost instantaneously. This forced Gogeta to use Super Saiyan God SS Evolved, allowing him to swiftly overpower and kill Crimson.

In the manga, as Super Saiyan Rosé 3 Crimson battles the Warrior in Black, after Goku and Vegeta gain the ability to utilize Perfected Ultra Instinct and Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (Berserk Controlled) at will respectively, Chamel tells them they will need to fuse into Gogeta to defeat Crimson. Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta promptly goes on to easily wipe out Crimson, however this leads to Crimson achieving Super Saiyan Rosé Full Power, with which he is able to match Gogeta thanks to his immortality, however the tables are immediately turned once more by Gogeta's Super Saiyan God SS Evolved, whose attacks Crimson cannot even see.

Game

In Dragon Ball Heroes, using Super Saiyan Rosé 3, Crimson is able to overpower Ultra Instinct Sign Goku. Using Super Saiyan Rosé 2 he is able to outmatch the Super Saiyan Warrior in Black - who is fighting defensively to stall - and so opts to use Super Saiyan Rosé 3 to end things quickly. He then goes to fight Perfected Ultra Instinct Goku and is overwhelmed and defeated, but the beating allows him to achieve Super Saiyan Rosé Full Power, with this new state he battles Ultra Instinct Goku, and goes on to outmatch him due to the form having lost power from having been used in the prior battle, following this he easily defeated Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (Berserk Controlled) Vegeta. Crimson is then faced with Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta, who is unable to defeat him until he transforms into the Super Saiyan God SS Evolved state, however even then Crimson survives thanks to his energy-driven immortality, only to be finished off by Goku and the Warrior in Black.

    • Immortality - In the game and in the anime, as long as he can absorb life energy from the Pseudo Universe, Crimson is immortal - giving him the ability to regenerate; however, he cannot regenerate from attacks from a warrior on the level of Super Saiyan God SS Evolved Gogeta. In the manga, Crimson's body is made purely from energy, and he is able to collect energy from battles he observes - as long as he has reserves of this energy, he is immortal.

Forms and Transformations

Taking an appearance akin to Super Saiyan Rosé 3, with the long hair and increased muscle mass, his eyebrows return to normal, while regrowing his body's Saiyan tail. The remainder of his mask erupt into flames upon activation of the transformation, with most of the remaining mask breaking off.

Equipment
  • Time Breaker Mask - Crimson wears a Time Breaker Mask, which he received from Fu, which grants him mind-reading resistance and a significant power boost. While the mask normally places the wearer under the control of the person who gave them the mask, Crimson appears to retain full control of himself, likely due to either his divine status or his extremely powerful will.
  • Dark Dragon Ball - A set of Dragon Balls created by Xeno Dende for the Dark Empire. At some point, Crimson obtained the One-Star and Two-Star Dark Dragon Balls, which he fused with Frieza and Cooler to fuel conflict in the Pseudo Universe for his own plans.
  • Time Ring - Retaining his godly ki as a Kai, Crimson is able to wield a Time Ring, which allows him to travel through time and even alternate realities. The ring also acts as a stabilizer, preventing his existence from being affected by changes in the past. Similar to his main counterpart, Crimson wore the ring on his right hand.
  • Scroll of Eternity - A Time Scroll used by Crimson to summon the Kings of Destruction (just Omega Shenron in the anime) to fight on his behalf.
