Cell Max (セルマックス Seru Makkusu)[1] is a Bio-Android and an improved variation of Cell created by Dr. Hedo for the revived Red Ribbon Army. He is the final antagonist of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero and the Super Hero Saga.

Appearance[]

Cell Max Film

Cell Max

Cell Max's appearance greatly resembles that of the original Cell's Semi-Perfect form, though Cell Max is primarily red instead of green, has glowing yellow (later red) eyes, Perfect Cell-like wings, and a mace at the end of his tail. In the film, Cell Max is initially colorless until his chamber colors his body upon activation. In the film, the spots on his body do not appear until he initially powers up - though he has them from the get-go in the manga - and glow when he uses ki attacks. Initially, Cell Max was shown to be somewhat larger than average, but grew to be gargantuan by the time of the final battle. Additionally, Cell Max's feet have treaded undersides, resembling traditional boots more than Cell's talon-like feet.

Personality[]

Largely because he was prematurely activated by Magenta, Cell Max appears to be completely mindless and totally berserk. He possesses none of the original Cell's calm attributes, though appears to possess strong enough fighting knowledge to contend with wise fighters such as Piccolo.

Biography[]

Background[]

Magenta, the leader of Red Pharmaceuticals, secretly a front for the Red Ribbon Army, hires genius Dr. Hedo, the grandson of Dr. Gero (the one responsible for the creation of Cell) to create new androids in order to exact his revenge against Goku and his allies.

Though Dr. Hedo feels that there is no need for Cell Max to be released with the existence of the Gamma androids already proving effective, Magenta is insistent on his completion. While his physical form is complete, his mind control program is not. Despite this, he is still described as being far more powerful than the original Cell ever was.

Cell Max is released

Cell Max is activated with Magenta's dying breath. It takes to the sky and lets out a mighty yell creating an explosion that takes down Hedo as he attempts to flee from the beast in an aircraft. Concerned for their creator, the Gammas rush in to aid him but Cell Max takes swipes at them, unable to determine anyone from ally or foe. The Gammas charge the giant though their attacks have little to no affect while Cell Max is able to take Gamma 1 down with ease. Trunks and Goten step forward and transform into their superhero alter egos, Saiyaman X-1 and Saiyaman X-2, as they charge into battle though they are effortlessly swatted aside also. The two young Saiyans transform into Super Saiyan and eventually both Gamma 1 and Gamma 2 join in to assist them and working together they perform the Cyclone Style! Tornado Super Hurricane technique, piledriving straight into Cell Max's stomach which sends him hurtling into the mountain.

Cell Max's Disaster Ray

He soon gets back to his feet, seemingly undamaged and unleashes more of his power. In the blink of an eye Cell Max takes down his opponents. With no other choice, Gohan, Piccolo and Android 18 race into battle. When the Gammas rejoin them, Gamma 1 tells them to aim for the top of his head due to it being a weak spot that Dr. Hedo had installed just in case the android went out of control, though warns that once the weak point has been penetrated it will cause a devastating explosion that will obliterate all of his cells. Everyone attempts to attack Cell Max's but have difficulty due to his constant movement. After Gamma 1 distracts him, Gamma 2 lands a powerful blast from his Ray Gun at point blank range, giving Piccolo the opportunity to land a powerful attack on the top of Cell Max's head however it fails to create a dent in him. Becoming angered, Cell Max unleashes a barrage of energy lasers that attack in all directions with Krillin saving Pan from being struck at the last second.

DBS 98 08

Cell Max overpowers Piccolo

As Cell Max contends with Gotenks and Android 18, Gamma 2 tells the others to distract him so that he can land his ultimate sacrificial attack. Krillin appears and blinds Cell Max using his Solar Flare but he recovers just in time to block Gamma 2 with his arm. Cell Max loses his arm from the attack but nevertheless survives. Angered, he attempts to crush Gamma 2's lifeless corpse but Piccolo stops him after turning into "Orange Piccolo". Despite the power up and then growing to equal size, Cell Max still has the advantage and beats on the Namekian until Gohan appears at full strength to briefly knock him down.

Cell Max soon returns to the battlefield as Piccolo attempts to hold him off for as long as possible so that Gohan has the chance to fully power up and surpass the android. Cell Max quickly overpowers Piccolo and when the others join in to assist him, he takes them down almost immediately one by one. Piccolo rejoins the fight and lands a good blow before his arm is taken off with a Mouth Energy Wave. Cell Max grabs Piccolo and launches him into the air, battering him with a barrage of energy blasts and follows up with a singular powerful attack with Gamma 1 racing ahead of the blast to reach Piccolo first just before a huge explosion is formed.

Gohan kicks Cell Max

As Gohan witnesses the sight from the ground, fearing for his friends life, he snaps and awakens a new state. Cell Max darts towards Gohan, landing a solid punch on his abdomen which fails to have any effect at all. Gohan returns the favour with a powerful kick that sends the giant hurtling backwards into the cliffside. Becoming increasingly angry at now being outmatched, Cell Max fires up his most powerful attack yet, a sphere of dark energy of colossal size and begins to take to the air. Piccolo, revealed to have survived the earlier attack thanks to Gamma 1 having used a barrier to shield him, uses his stretched arm to ensnare Cell Max as he attempts to stop him from taking off. As Gohan begins to power up a Special Beam Cannon to finish Cell Max off for good, the android panics as he struggles to fly away. Gamma 1, Krillin and Android 18 return and destroy both of his wings with Piccolo calling out to Gohan to launch his attack.

Gohan Beast defeats Cell Max (manga)

Cell Max is defeated by Gohan

Gohan unleashes his attack and Cell Max responds by throwing his, resulting in a powerful beam clash between the two. As both struggle to gain an advantage over the over, Goten and Trunks, now having defused, appear to kick away Cell Max's hand, distracting him long enough for Gohan to get the push that he needed. Gohan's attack penetrates Cell Max's core and he falls to the ground. In his final moments, Cell Max's body swells before creating an explosion that levels the entire Red Ribbon base though the heroes are all able to make it to safety in time.

Gamma 1 and Gamma 2, followed by Gohan, Piccolo, Goten, Trunks and Android 18 attack the giant together who in retaliation swipes angrily at his foes who proceed to dodge in midair. The group attack again but the surprising speed of Cell Max gives them trouble until Piccolo finds an opening to attack his head. Unfortunately, the attack proves to be ineffective and merely causes Cell Max to unleash an array of energy blasts from his spots which the group narrowly avoid. Goten and Trunks perform the fusion technique but not having performed it in so long it results in the creation of a fat Gotenks instead. Gotenks flies towards Cell Max who swats him away but is ping ponged around and directed back at the monster's head where a crack begins to form.

Cell Max vs Gamma 2

With a final sacrificial act, Gamma 2 unleashes all of his power and charges at Cell Max from above. The monster is able to block him just in time with his arm though it proceeds to break off, weakening him. He attempts to crush the near lifeless Gamma 2 under his foot though Piccolo is able to intervene upon transforming into his Orange Piccolo state, holding his foot aloft. Following a suggestion from Krillin, Piccolo grows into a giant of equal size and throws him.

Piccolo battles Cell Max alongside Gohan, now transformed in his Ultimate state and while still overpowered, Gohan is able to buy the group sometime after destroying the ground beneath Cell Max's feet and causing him to fall. Piccolo urges Gohan to power up as much energy as he can gather as he attempts to buy him some time. Cell Max brutally beats down Piccolo and the others try to help him though are swiftly defeated. Cell Max strikes Piccolo into the air and unleashes a volley of energy blast at him which causes him to fall unconscious.

Super Hero - Gohan Beast defeats Cell Max

The sight infuriates Gohan who transforms into his Beast form. Cell Max tosses Piccolo and punches at Gohan who does not even flinch. A returning kick from Gohan sends Cell Max flying into the cliffside. Powering up an enormous sphere of energy before condensing it down to size, Cell Max is grabbed by Piccolo as he tries to take flight to get away from Gohan. Charging up enough energy, Gohan unleashes a Special Beam Cannon that blasts straight through Cell Max's head. He falls to the ground and begins to swell up before self-destructing.

Power[]

Manga

While still getting used to being awake and in combat, Cell Max has trouble with the Gamma Androids as well as Goten and Trunks in their Super Saiyan forms, but still holds the edge over them.

After being weakened as a result of his arm being cut off by Gamma 2's sacrifice, Cell Max still manages to defeat the giant-sized Orange Piccolo after a brief fight. When Gohan achieves his Beast state, Cell Max is unable to damage him with a punch and is sent flying back from Gohan's retort. However during his energy clash with Gohan Beast the two end up in a stalemate until Goten and Trunks interfere with Cell Max's control of his Explosive Scream energy ball.

After the battle with Cell Max is concluded, Gohan is unsure if Goku and Vegeta could have defeated the monster.

Films

Cell Max was fully complete aside from the mind control that would allow the Red Ribbon Army to give him orders. In case Cell Max grew out of control, Dr. Hedo made sure to designate the top of his head as a weak point that would additionally trigger his self-destruction if damaged enough.

Cell Max is powerful enough to fight and overpower the combined forces of Super Saiyan Gohan, Trunks, Goten, Ultimate Piccolo, Android 18, Krillin, Gamma 1 and Gamma 2. He was able to take Gamma 2's self-destructive attack, despite severe damage dealt to his left arm and side in the process. A ricochet headbutt from fat Gotenks was able to crack his head but did not slow down Cell Max's assault. He was later able to clash with and overpower Great Namekian Orange Piccolo before being completely overwhelmed by Gohan Beast, who easily killed Cell Max after Piccolo held him in place. After defeating the monster, Gohan and Piccolo were unsure as to whether or not Goku and Vegeta would have been able to defeat Cell Max.

Although an immense improvement upon the original Cell in terms of raw power, he lacks some of his predecessors' special traits such as regeneration and absorption, additionally, his self-destruct ability's radius was toned down from the original, only wiping out a large area rather than an entire planet.

Statements by authors and guidebooks

Had Cell Max been completed even Broly would be unable to defeat him. However, due to his early activation, he became an uncontrollable monster.[1]

Dokkan Battle marks the first video game appearance of Cell Max as a special boss card.

In Super Dragon Ball Heroes, Cell Max is playable starting from Ultra God Mission 4.

In Xenoverse 2 as part of the 1.20.01 Update DLC, Cell Max was added as a Raid Boss. During the events of the DLC story, Fu attempts to make him more controllable, but his scheme goes haywire and he is forced to band Gohan & Piccolo, the Gammas, Android 16 & 21, and the Future Warrior together in order to defeat him.

If Android 16 deals the sacrificial blow to Cell Max, he greatly damages the brute with his Self Destruct Device and the Gammas carry his body away while Orange Piccolo prevents them being crushed underneath Cell Max's foot. However, because Krillin wasn't around to remind Piccolo to use his Giant Form, Piccolo is crushed instead. Witnessing the near-death of his mentor, Gohan unleashes his Beast form and begins to turn the tides while Fu feeds Piccolo a Senzu Bean to keep him in the game. In the end, Gohan and Piccolo's combined Special Beam Cannon pierces straight through Cell Max's head, annihilating him.

If Gamma 2 deals the sacrificial blow to Cell Max, his Core Breaker causes heavy damage to the monster android before he withers away on the spot. Furious at his fellow superhero's sacrifice, Gamma 1 recklessly charges in, but is swatted aside, his Gamma Blaster knocked out of his hand. Before he can attempt another charge, Android 21 stops him, reminding him to work as a team and to stay alive to protect Dr. Hedo. Coming to his senses, Gamma 1 picks up Gamma 2's blaster and prepares a final attack with 21 & 16. Cell Max attempts to hit them first but is intercepted by a ki blast from Ultimate Gohan and a dropkick from Orange Piccolo. With their newfound opening, Gamma 1, 21 & 16's combined blast pierces straight through Cell Max's head, annihilating him.

In Dragon Ball Legends, Cell Max can be summoned by Magenta's Unique Ability I'm about to activate Cell Max! which triggers after Magenta is defeated with battle members remaining. Once triggered Cell Max is activated and performs Max Barrier like how he did in Super Hero.

Trivia[]

  • Cell Max appears to incorporate more technology into his body than the original Cell, seen when his arm is severed by Gamma 2's final attack revealing a mechanical internal structure. His skin color also appears to be painted, with the damage caused by Gamma 2 revealing gray metal underneath. This may be attributed to Dr. Hedo being given incomplete data on the original Cell.
  • The multi-directional beam attack Cell Max uses is very similar to the Giga Rays used by Gandora the Dragon of Destruction from the Yu-Gi-Oh! series, as well as the Dorsal Plate Beams of Shin Godzilla from the Kaiju film of the same name.
  • Owing to his being a modified version of Cell, Cell Max shares the same voice actor as Cell in nearly all versions, although he never speaks as opposed to roaring.
  • Cell Max is the second Kaiju main antagonist with the first being Hirudegarn.
