HybridAction Broly Bandai

Hybrid Action series Broly figure

  • Hybrid Action series
  • Release date: 2007

Released in 2007, Bandai’s “Hybrid Action” series is likely the absolute best aside from Unifive’s Posing series in terms of complete articulation. This series features figures with extreme detail yet allows for a nice repertoire of poses to be done. Articulation plays a large role when it comes to basic scale action figures and is likely a great differentiating factor amongst the versatility of specific collectibles. In this case, the Hybrid Action Broly figure is quite a great addition to anyone interested in high levels of articulation. Depicted in his Super Saiyan form, Broly’s muscles are quite large and still bend well with the joints as well as having circular rotations. The figure is able to be posed in numerous positions, similar to Unifive’s Posing series, but at a slightly larger scale. Along with this versatility, another interesting feature to note is the additional pair of inter-changeable hands that come in the packaging. This allows for different postures and overall stances.

In this set, all the characters came sitting on top of a mini Dragon Ball or another item (such as a space pod). Super Saiyan Broly is seen sitting on a Dragon Ball and with a miniature transparent base. Both his hands are clenched into fists and positioned in a charging stance as his facial expression is one that showcases complete rage. Also, the initial releases of these mini-figurines came with a small piece of candy.

The release date being in March 2013, it comes with a Super Saiyan 3 style hair, extended with a tint of jade and emerald green. The figurine portrays Super Saiyan 3 Broly with his hands in a feral posture and his face as insane as ever. His posture is that of a gigantic brute preparing to pounce. The most distinguishing feature is by far the hair on this piece as it moves fluently with the motion, as if neon shards of ice shattering into the air itself. There is also great detail on the body as well, particularly the biceps, torso, and muscles. Even the neck piece is very intricately designed. All sapphire colored stones on his neck-piece, boots, straps, and waist are extremely intricate and depict a vivid shine. Everything right down to the movement of his garb is near perfect for any collectible piece, and specifically one of this unique construct, a Super Saiyan 3 Broly.

In this HQ DX piece, the paint job is very exquisite and the likeness is uncanny, although the paint job is less shiny and closer to the series’ anime and movie look. Also, there is a good deal of articulation allowed for such a large figure, particularly in terms of both legs having double horizontal joints for unique poses. The distinguishing factor for this large collectible is the facial reaction, strictly maintaining the insanely white-filled eyes and smooth yellow texture of the hair. The character is noted as “Legendary SS Broly” on the packaging box bubble. Others included in the series 5 set are Super Saiyan Future Trunks and Battle Damaged Super Saiyan Goku.

Standing at approximately 8 inches tall, this specific model is rather well-crafted and stands out amongst numerous others imported from these Mexican Manufacturers. His neck-piece has a green stone on it. Super Saiyan 3 Broly here is erupting with rage, his eyes white with fury and maintaining a vicious and monstrous stance. His musclebound body is kept intact, portraying his shredded clothing as well as additional accessories carved to deadly perfection.

Following the Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 3 forms of Broly is yet another model here, maintaining a similar mold. This one’s the hard-to-find Super Saiyan 4 Broly model, which was also sculpted by a Mexican Manufacturer. The actual mold is quite unique and unlike other models, as many and most of the bases are just a redone instrumentation of other figures and/or just plain bootlegs of other sculpts. This one, however, is a new model in and of itself and was sculpted and sold as is. The paint job isn’t particularly brilliant but it is unique and isn’t on the poor side as is the case with most bootlegs or copied imports. Standing at approximately 8 inches tall, this specific model is rather well-crafted and stands out amongst numerous others imported from these Mexican Manufacturers. Super Saiyan 4 Broly here is erupting with rage, his eyes white with fury and maintaining a vicious and monstrous stance. His musclebound body is kept intact, portraying his white-tinted fur as well as additional accessories carved to deadly perfection.

This bootleg 4-pack features a few SBC recolors. The pieces included in the set are essentially recolors of the SBC figures but with less effort and somewhat error in coloring scheme. The set has a backboard with red coloring and images of the hero characters as well as the "Dragoon Ball" logo.

High Grade Broly figure re-release front view

  • High Grade Coloring series re-release
  • Release date: Unknown

This was the same Super Saiyan Broly model from the High Grade Coloring keychain series but is re-released in figure format as opposed to being a keychain. The figure comes with a basic round yellow base as many others in this same set. The figure remains exactly the same as the High Grade model, aside from very minor alterations in terms of the paint job. Others included in this same re-release set are Tapion, Tien, Yamcha, Super Saiyan 3 Goku, and Goku.

Broly "what-if" scenario series figure

  • What-If Scenario series
  • Release date: Unknown

This figurine is a repaint variant of the previously released Real Works Part 5 Broly figurine, which had a blue tint of hair. This version, however, is depicted with his normal black hair. Also, the coloring scheme depicts him in a less-glossy look as opposed to the shiny one offered in the Real Works set. This piece remains a part of the "what-if" scenario additions, due to being a part of this set, which is comprised of Saiyan characters with odd fusion and Super Saiyan transformations. The only character portrayed in a canon fashion in this set is Broly, who appears in his pre-transformed state. Others also included in this 12 cm set with bases and who are non-canon by their appearance are Turles (with Super Saiyan 4-type fur), Super Saiyan 4 Vegeta (with silver fur and silver hair), Super Saiyan 4 Goku (with silver fur and silver hair), Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta (with silver fur and silver hair), and a very odd Super Saiyan Gotenks with a dark skin tone, orange hair, and an alternate clothing pattern. The figurines come with miniature bases to stand on, which add congruence to the overall set as a whole.

The same unique set that has constituted Broly as the only canon-looking character in the corresponding set designed in congruence with the movie universe has also been made available in keychain format. The model is the same as the Real Works model aside from the repaint done here. Unlike any previous releases, this piece remains a "what-if" scenario addition due to being a part of this set. Others also released in the same set are comprised of Saiyan characters with odd fusion and Super Saiyan transformations. These keychains are likely exactly the same figurines from the aforementioned "what-if" scenario set but are fitted into a keyholder slot, allowing for them to be used as keychains as opposed to figurines.

Broly figure with yellow base

  • HSCF Yellow-base series
  • Release date: Unknown

The same Broly figurine from the HSCF set previously designated as collectible 04 was re-released in a set with yellow bases. Also included in this set were re-releases of other HSCF series figures such as Piccolo, Bardock, and Super Saiyan Goku. The figures themselves remain exactly the same aside from not having their original packaging and coming with round, yellow bases to stand on. There is some minor alteration in terms of the coloring scheme but the overall mold remains an exact duplicate.

Broly from set

Broly "what-if" scenario series figure

  • What-If Scenario series
  • Release date: Unknown

A most recent release has constituted Broly along with many other characters in the same set, which are seemingly non-canon to the series universe. His figure is exactly the same in this set as the Bandai Real Works series model aside from the hair being very slightly redone with a less glossy touch. The hair coloring scheme is still exactly the same though, being a blue tint and remaining the same model. Unlike any previous releases, however, there is a Western Supreme Kai included in this set as a stand-alone piece offered by neither of the aforementioned companies. Most of the pieces in this set remain "what-if" scenario additions, which are comprised of Saiyan characters with odd Super Saiyan transformations. The only other character portrayed in a canon fashion in this set is Broly himself, who appears in his pre-transformed mid-transformation state with shiny greenish-blueish hair. Others also included in this 12 cm set with bases and who are non-canon by their appearance are Super Saiyan 3 Vegeta (Vegeta skipped this level in canon and progressed directly to level 4), Super Vegito (with silver hair), Goku (with intricate non-canon clothing), and Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta (with silver fur and silver hair). The Broly figure is a re-release of the Real Works figure and the Western Supreme Kai is a very unique addition to all sets. The figurines come with miniature transparent bases to stand on (engraved with a symbol stating AF), which add congruence to the overall set as a whole.

Broly AF set keychain a

Broly what-if scenario series keychain figurine

  • What-If scenario series
  • Release date: Unknown

Another very unique set has been incorporated in a keychain format similar to the High Grade releases by Banpresto. A model of Super Saiyan 5 Broly appears as a part of this set. His posture is one of deadly finesse and a declaration of brutal glory, holding one arm up in a tight grip and maintaining a sadistic look of vicious joy. There is particularly nice detail on his fur, creating the Super Saiyan 5 look for the character with a tint of gray on his arms and chest area. Another noticeable feature is his hair pattern, signified with lines of white and colliding with a tint of gray to make the shading more realistic. Broly’s eyes in this form are also an all-white in accordance with other releases of him while he’s in insane-mode. Other pieces included in this what-if set are a fusion of Kid Buu and Frieza, a Super Saiyan 4 fusion of Gotenks, Super Saiyan 5 Vegeta, Super Saiyan 5 Goku, and a rather oddly painted Super Saiyan 5 character. The figures stand at approximately 9 cm (Kid Buu fusion) to 13 cm (Super Saiyan 5 Broly).

The same what-if scenario set from the aforementioned keychain series was also released with transparent bases, ranging from 10 cm (Kid Buu fusion) to 14 cm (Super Saiyan 5 Broly) with their bases. Nothing is altered for these pieces in terms of design as they are exactly the same molds and models but without the pierced keychain slots and instead with their unique transparent round bases. The Super Saiyan 5 Broly is a nice addition to any collector of the what-if scenario figurines and goes along well with the other wild and intense figurines that transcend the imagination for Dragon Ball super-powered warriors.

Dragon Ball What If Set including Broly

  • Dragon Ball What If Set
  • Release date: Unknown

A recent unique pack released under the Chinese manufacturing department has included a Super Saiyan Broly, Super Saiyan 4 Vegeta, Super Saiyan 4 Goku (with yellow hair and fur recoloring), Super Saiyan 2 Vegeta, Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta (with black hair recoloring and green pants), and Goku as he appears in GT with green garb. These are some very unique models and molds as they are limited to this set albeit having a what-if scenario element. Broly's piece is one of the only ones that stays true to his appearance and isn't an alteration to his pre-existing construct and design aside from his elongated tail which may be a reference to his becoming a Super Saiyan 4. He is portrayed screaming as he pumps up and maintains a battle-ready posture. All the pieces in this set have a round orange base with "Dragon Ball" written across the front portion, easily being attributed to this set.
