No, he actually meant drinking his body and blood literally. At least, that's what we Catholics believe. He never used metaphors at all. Now, parables, sure, since that's what God willed when he had Jesus come to earth, and are more like comparisons which actually ARE bound to truth and facts, but not metaphors.

Metaphors can still be true if you take time to think, and I doubt they literally ate Him or else the whole Cross thing wouldn't be possible.

So yes, it was a metaphor.
