"Why do you think I protect that big island alone? Because I am enough."
— Android 17 to poachers.

Android 17 (人造人間17号 Jinzōningen Jū Nana-Gō, lit. "Artificial Human No. 17"), Lapis (ラピス Rapisu) when he was an ordinary Human,[2] is the twin brother of Android 18 and Dr. Gero's seventeenth android creation, a cyborg due to being a human at one point, and one of his first human subjects, designed to serve Gero's vendetta against Goku, who overthrew the Red Ribbon Army as a child. Despite his interests not initially deviating from this expectation, Android 17 takes it upon himself to kill Dr. Gero, who is uncooperative with Android 18's curiosity in activating Android 16 and deemed inferior by 17.

Android 17 makes a return a decade later in Dragon Ball Super, working as a national park ranger preserving wildlife from poachers. He is married and has a child, with two more children being adopted. He is asked by Goku to join Team Universe 7 in the Tournament of Power in the Universe Survival Saga.

Appearance

Android17and18DebutNV

Android 18 and Android 17

Android 17 is a handsome young man with a short, slim build, much like his twin sister, Android 18. He has shoulder-length black hair and thin, blue eyes. Underneath his hair, he has two gold hoop earrings. He wears an orange bandanna around his neck. He wears a short sleeve black shirt with the Red Ribbon Army's logo, and, underneath, he dons a long-sleeve white shirt. He wears a belt to hold up his blue jeans which have a tear just above the knee of the left leg. Just below the first belt he wears another belt with a gun holster and another pouch, although he discards it by the time the Androids arrive at Goku's house. Android 17 wears green socks and blue and white sneakers. During his cameo in the Buu Saga, he wears a blue jacket over his clothes along with white gloves, and during the Super 17 Saga, he wears a tan, knee-length jacket and tan gloves.

When appearing in Dragon Ball Super, Android 17 wears a white shirt with "MIR" imprinted on it, with green sleeves and blue jeans. He has black shoes and wears a tan colored belt. On his left sleeve is an orange armband that says "RANGER." 17 also has black gloves, his hairstyle was changed slightly to resemble his twin sister's hairstyle, but in the opposite direction, now parting to the left instead of the middle, although this was an artwork error, and in later scenes, his hair was parted in the middle again. He also wears silver hoop earrings.

Personality

Initially a reckless anarchist, Android 17 later reveals himself to be little more than a rebel without a cause. He finds joy in causing panic and acts on whims. Most of his choices during his initial appearance were motivated by what he called "The Game", referring to their quest to find and exterminate Goku.

While reveling in his enhanced might setting him apart from others, Android 17 hated his cybernetics that were forced on him, as Android 18 revealed when refusing Semi-Perfect Cell's attempts at convincing Android 18 into merging with him. This is likely because of the trauma he experienced due to being kidnapped by Gero. It may also be due to his love of nature, as he was no longer natural when Gero turned him into an Android.

When he is revived by Shenron because of a wish that restored both the lives of all of Cell's victims and all the damage caused during the Cell Games, Android 17 goes on to live a life of peace in obscurity. At the end of Dragon Ball Z, Android 17 provided energy for Goku's Super Spirit Bomb to destroy Kid Buu. He reappears in Dragon Ball GT when the scientists Dr. Gero and Dr. Myuu brainwash him telepathically, and he is eventually fused with Hell Fighter 17, a Machine Mutant version of himself created by the scientists in Hell, to form Super 17. Even without the ability to maintain his mind, however, 17 still exhibits sensitivity, mostly towards his sister. This is in stark contrast to Future Android 17, where he is a murderous sociopath who cares for no one but himself and his sibling. While under Dr. Myuu's control, he forces his transformed-self to reveal his own weak point, thus allowing Goku to kill him.

Android 17's strongest personal trait is his sense of self. He does his best to resist the will of Dr. Gero, and later, Dr. Myuu, and fights a futile battle against Imperfect Cell to assert his identity and his pride. He is also overconfident in his power, believing that nobody was stronger than him and stalwartly denying it if someone said otherwise. This changed when he saw Cell and Android 16's strength in battle.

He is also somewhat sadistic, as he has a Colt M1911, using it against civilians in lieu of his own power. He seemingly finds amusement in the panic which he causes with it, in both Future Trunks' and the current timelines. This pistol can be seen holstered to his character model in the video game Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3.

As noted by his sister, Android 17 is somewhat similar to Goku, showing a childlike attitude at times. He often tries to find a fun means to accomplish his goals, as he made his attempt to locate Goku as nothing more than a game, even deliberately avoiding asking for directions in order to "play the game." Similarly, he has a tendency to go off the road during their travel to Goku's house simply because he thought it was "fun", much to 18's irritation. In the anime, when he holds up two hunters in order to trick them into donating their energies to Goku's Super Spirit Bomb needed to defeat Kid Buu, Android 17 says that they won the game before raising his own hand as well.[3]

Android 17's rebel without a cause personality has since been tempered by his occupation, as he channeled his somewhat anarchistic and childish tendencies into handling poachers and other persons of illegal intent or occupation within the Royal Nature Park with startling efficiency. His hyperactive nature merely lacked a proper focus before, and when given an ongoing objective, it can be seen that 17 is extremely focused and dedicated to achieving his goals. 17, however, did not lose his sense of humor in his work, as when he stopped the two hunters and tricked them into giving energy to the Super Spirit Bomb, he was clearly amused.

His slide into maturity is likely a contributing factor to his marriage. He also apparently has a soft-spot for children. Despite being relatively indifferent to reuniting with his brother-in-law Krillin, he was very warm to meeting his niece Marron. In addition, he had a child with his wife, plus adopted two more. It is possible that his decision to adopt two of his three children may have been influenced by his kidnapping at the hands of Dr. Gero.

By the time of the Universe Survival Saga, Android 17 has become much calmer than before, and is a gentleman, suggesting that he is more mature than his previous rebel-without-a-cause personality. Whereas before he was random in his decisions, going purely on his emotional state, he now showed a more collected and pragmatic nature. He has also become very casual and humble, not showing much personal desire beyond providing for his family and protecting the wildlife. He also seems to take his opponents more seriously, a complete departure from his previous superiority-complex self and the murderously sadistic nature of his alternate timeline counterpart.[4] 17 is shown to be very nonchalant and not swayed by any kind of news, even when learning of his potential death should Universe 7 lose in the Tournament of Power, refusing Goku's offer to participate despite the circumstances. He also apparently has a soft spot for children, while indifferent to meeting his sister. His child like attitude however is still very present as well as his desire to have a bit of fun while on his way to accomplish his goals, this was mostly shown in the Tournament of Power during his many fights with Universe 2 as he always played along with their over the top introductions and antics of love often playing the role of the "villain". However in times of crisis he is capable of being very serious, and even very heroic and this was mostly on display during his final living moments of the Tournament of Power with acts like throwing himself in front of the exhausted and injured Goku and Vegeta to take hits for them due to his infinite energy or even going as far as killing himself to save them from elimination at the hands of Jiren. Another newer personality trait is his tactical sense of fighting. While outclassed by the likes of Toppo and Jiren 17 is able to still fight with them and hold them off for considerable lengths of time. This was mostly shown during his final stand against Jiren, where 17 was actually able to get inside of Jiren's head upon learning of his past and his wish for the Super Dragon Balls and was able to use this to give him a slight edge for a moment.

As shown from his choice of career, Android 17 is very outdoorsy, and finds it hard to sit still, seemingly stemming from his previously hyperactive nature. His love of the outdoors may have been influenced by the nature-loving Android 16, with whom 17 was close friends. 17's choice in a wife, a zoologist, may have been influenced by his occupation as a Park Ranger and enjoyment of the wild. 17 cares greatly for nature and was even willing to die to save it by taking on intergalactic space poachers and was willing to allow himself to suffocate in space to prevent them from blowing up. At the same time, not unlike his sister, Android 17 is not without a measure of materialist desire. His greatest dream is to own a large luxury boat, although it is for a simple goal of traveling the world with his wife and children. During the Tournament of Power, he showed much more concern for his sister's well being. When quickly realizing that she sprained her ankle, despite her denial of it, 17 quickly helped tend to it. Also, whereas before 17 would keep out of 18's battles or insist on fighting alone himself, he was shown in the tournament to work in great synergy with 18.

Biography

Background

Lapis Lazuli SD

Lapis as a child in SD

Android 17 was originally a human named Lapis,[2] and the younger of he and his twin sister Lazuli.[5] The twins were notorious delinquents, who Dr. Gero would meet by chance while looking for fresh material for his experiments. He then kidnapped them and restructured them into Android 17 and Android 18.[6]

However, despite being referred to as androids or cyborgs and commonly regarded as such, both Android 17 and his sister are practically neither. Bulma stated while looking at 17's blueprint that he was human-based, but just about everything has been enhanced with bio-organic components.[7] His only mechanical parts are the emergency deactivation controller and self-destruction device (removed).[8] Dragon Ball Super reaffirms this, with Gohan stating that the androids have been modified on cellular level to be superhuman.[9]

Android 17 is the first artificial human designed by Dr. Gero to be a biologically modified human as well as being an infinite energy model, along with his sister Android 18. The nature and mechanisms of their infinite energy source has not been made clear. Since they are human-based, they can become stronger if they train. Though they do not need to eat, they do need to hydrate. Also, their artificial cells deteriorate slowly, so they age slowly too.[2]

Android 17 betrays and murders Dr. Gero

Android 17 and his twin sister Android 18 are awakened by Dr. Gero when he is pressed into a desperate situation by the Z Fighters, who have surpassed his expectations because of the intense training they endured after Gero collected their statistic data. Severely disloyal to Gero, in contrast to the android models which precede himself and his sister, Android 17 turns rogue on the scientist, impaling and decapitating him. Android 17 and 18 then proceed to activate Android 16, and decide to challenge Goku; not because they have been commanded to do so, but merely as a form of entertainment.

Android17ChokingTien01

17 effortlessly choking Tien

When Vegeta in his Super Saiyan form intercepts the trio, 17 and 18 implore 16 to step in and fight, interested to see him in action, as that was their main purpose for activating him in the first place. However, Android 16 refuses to fight him, thus prompting Android 18 to volunteer. Future Trunks, Krillin, Piccolo and Tien Shinhan arrive as Vegeta's reinforcement. While Android 18 dominates Vegeta in the fight, Android 17 takes the opportunity to ask if Android 16 will join the fight, though, as he initially assumed, Android 16 would once again opt out. When 18 breaks Vegeta's arm during the battle, Future Trunks breaks Android 17's non-interference truce because he could not bear to see Vegeta injured. Android 17 intervenes and fights against Future Trunks, dealing one hard hit to his head, almost knocking him out. Android 17 also chokes Tien when the latter tries to punch him, and he does not let go until Piccolo tries to save Tien. He then effortlessly defeats Piccolo, dealing a single blow that nearly tears through the latter. At the conclusion of the encounter, everyone is rendered incapacitated besides Krillin, who is spared so that Android 17 may see the others healed by Senzu Beans for another battle.

This is one of many examples that set Android 17 and Android 18 apart from their future timeline counterparts, especially considering how much stronger they are in the mainstream timeline than in Future Trunks' future.

Android 17 prepares to fight Piccolo

Later, Android 17, Android 18 and Android 16 arrive at Kame House, asking where Goku is. Piccolo, after fusing with Kami, challenges Android 17, hoping that he can defeat at least one of them and prevent Imperfect Cell from absorbing one of his targets and achieving his perfect form, which would spell doom. Android 17 accepted Piccolo's challenge and contends to fighting Piccolo one-on-one, rather than fight with Android 18, vastly increasing Piccolo's chance to win. Piccolo appears to have the upper hand in the battle until Android 17 confesses that he had been holding back and playing with the Namekian. Once both choose to go at full power, they find that they are an even match. Equal in both power and strength; Android 17 had an advantage because of his unlimited energy and speed. Piccolo would match that with his regeneration and variety of energy attacks, such as the Scatter Shot, Light Grenade, as well as a plethera of other attacks. Android 17 almost gets injured by Piccolo's Hellzone Grenade attack, but he protects himself with an Android Barrier, much to Piccolo's dismay.

"He keeps hoping he'll get lucky and hit me."
— Android 17, while fighting Piccolo

The fight is an apparent draw until Cell's arrival interrupts the match. Ironically, Cell is able to detect Android 17 through the nearby presence of Piccolo, who had engaged Android 17 in an effort to impede Cell's progression to perfection. Piccolo assists Android 17 in avoiding Cell and Android 17 thanks him in return. While Piccolo tries to aid in the battle against Cell, he is tossed aside after Cell admits to have become stronger. Android 17 ends up horrified when he witnesses Cell brutally disposing of the Namekian. While Android 17 is struggling to defend himself, Android 16 steps in to fight Imperfect Cell and is able to hold him off for some time by repeatedly surprising him with intense attacks such as his Hell's Flash. However, this sudden turning of tables creates an overconfidence in Android 17, who lingers to the scene of the battle, where the wounded but thriving Cell surprises and ultimately absorbs him, triggering his transformation into Semi-Perfect Cell.

Android 17 is killed when Super Perfect Cell is obliterated by Gohan's Father-Son Kamehameha.

17's life is restored after the Z Fighters use the Dragon Balls to revive those who died as a result of Cell's campaign. A second wish made to Shenron by Krillin removes the Android Bombs within Lapis and Lazuli's bodies. Krillin originally intended to use the wish to turn Android 17 and his sister into humans, but this proves beyond Shenron's power. Krillin did this because he thought 17 and 18 were meant to be a couple, until Android 18 angrily corrected him and revealed that 17 was actually her twin brother.

After being revived, 18 told 17 how he came to life

After the conflict with Cell, Android 17 is reborn in the same place Cell was destroyed thanks to Shenron. He was shortly greeted by his sister who told him he was revived and had his bomb removed thanks to Krillin. The two then part off to live since their mission to kill Goku was done.[10]

Android 17 becomes a park ranger in the wildlife preserve area of a gigantic royal nature park, where he is well paid. He is an outstanding guard who does not hold back against poachers. It is an ideal job for Lapis, as he loves to be on his own and is not big on cooperating with others. Since he is so good at his job, he takes in a high salary. Android 17 also marries a zoologist. They have one child and two adopted children, and live happily in an isolated house inside the nature park. He went and met Lazuli and Krillin one time, but did not talk about what he had been up to, possibly because he considers such a wholesome lifestyle embarrassing considering his past behavior.[2]

Kid Buu had destroyed the Earth with his Planet Burst, killing Android 17 again along with nearly everyone else. While fighting Kid Buu on the Sacred World of the Kai, Vegeta asks Dende to make a wish to Porunga for the Earth and the lives of all its good-willed inhabitants to be restored. The fact that Android 17 was not exempt from this wish, as confirmed by his appearance, is proof of Android 17's inherent goodness.

Goku is gathering energy for the Super Spirit Bomb in an effort to defeat Kid Buu, and in a mountainous region, Android 17 is walking down a forest trail when he recognizes Goku's voice, then encounters two hunters passing through. Android 17 raises his rifle to trick the two into raising their hands, unaware that they are supplying Goku with their energy. To the hunters' confusion, the android smiles and proclaims "You beat me to it", before raising one of his own hands.[3] The manga-equivalent of this scene does not feature the hunters; Android 17 merely raises his hands to pass on his energy while saying "So it's Goku, huh? I haven't heard that voice in a long time."

While recruiting members for the Tournament of Power, Android 18 is named as a suggestion and Gohan also suggests Android 17. Goku eventually meets with Dende, who personally takes him to the island where 17 is located, also telling Goku that not only is 17 a changed man, rid of the shadow that once inhabited his heart, he is also a lot stronger. Mr. Popo jumps in and tells Goku he has been at the lookout, occupied by the space around him, and telling him that he is not paying attention to what is happening on the Earth.

Android 17 works for a wildlife reserve, spending the days protecting animals on the island while fighting off poachers wanting to capture them, along with a rare Minotaurus, who 17 believes is the last of its kind. Goku, having finally met Android 17 as he is battling more poachers, greets him. Goku states that he knows that 17 is the one he was looking for, because his eyes resemble those of his sister. 17 replies that they are twins after all. 17 tells Goku that he is free to help him if he wants, after an enormous group of poachers show up, and advices him not to kill any poacher.

After chasing them off, Goku and 17 go explore a cave where the Minotaurus lives, the beast attacks them and 17 begs Goku not to fight back. Gaining the sky, 17 describes the Minotaurus as an endangered species under the Red Data Book, and mentions that this species used to be docile, but evolved to become very hostile to humans because of their constant hunting. The horns of the Minotaurus are highly prized and valued, and that is why Android 17 has to keep fighting off poachers with his own life.

Super Saiyan Goku vs. Android 17

As the sun goes down, Goku and 17 discuss and reflect each other's past, and they mention how they never had a chance to fight because of Cell absorbing 17. A curious and excited Goku exclaims that he wants to try out Android 17's current strength, and transforms into a Super Saiyan, wanting "strong friends" to aid him in the Tournament of Power, and rushes at him. After a few clashes, and two heavy blows from 17, Goku is overwhelmed, and states he is surprised by 17's new strength. 17 replies that he had not been sitting around by doing nothing. As the fight raged on, 17 shows some concerns about fighting near the forest, after Goku nearly crashed into it after a swift kick by 17, which sent the Saiyan flinging down, worrying 17. Fortunately, Goku stopped at the last second from hitting the nearby trees, to 17's slight relief, and Goku decided to take the fight to the skies to avoid hitting the forest again.

Android 17 uses android barrier

Goku reveals that he never intended to go this far, but finally decides to transform into Super Saiyan Blue. Android 17 was initially annoyed that Goku was condescendingly holding back until Goku asked Android 17 if he was holding back as well, to which 17 replied that he was. Goku wants 17 to go all-out as there is no forest to hold them back now, he then fires a God Kamehameha at Android 17, who blocks it with his Energy Shield. 17 appeared to be struggling with Goku's blast, but, after the blast explodes, obscuring him briefly, he suddenly appears and charges at Goku. Both fighters engage in an evenly, but explosive fist-to-fist clash, both screaming, apparently struggling, after another explosion, they engage in another suspenseful fight, until they end up splashing into the ocean, 17 stops the fight, seeing the dolphins breaching. Worried about their safety, which Goku notices, 17 asks for a break.

17 comments that his old self would have surely been defeated by Goku if they had fought, but Goku is not quite sure. 17 tells Goku that he knowingly was not serious yet. Goku admits it, but claims 17 is holding back as well. Both of them smile at each other, hinting that both assumptions are indeed correct. Goku is now glad that 17 is a "good guy" now and not an enemy, as he would be a lot of trouble to deal with.

While having coffee and a small talk, 17 tells Goku about his family, and mentions that he met his wife during his days in his job, and had 1 child with her and adopted 2 others. Goku then brings up the golden question: Will he fight in the Tournament of Power? 17 refuses because he already received a lot of money from his job through salaries, as Goku lied to him about Zeni being the prize, and not being able to leave the island in case more poachers come. Despite Goku offering Trunks and Goten to watch over the island, 17 still refuses, also knowing that Goku is hiding something. Goku tells 17 about being erased should Universe 7 lose, and 17 is not swayed by this news at all, stating that if everyone gets erased then it cannot be helped, ultimately refusing Goku's offer and wishing him good luck in finding someone else.

17 debt 2

17 owes Krillin his life

In the manga, however, Android 17 accepts to fight in the Tournament of Power after knowing Krillin will participate, as he feels he owns him a debt.

In the anime, as 17 is leaving, an alien force arrives above space and is hunting the endangered Minotaurus and begins to invade Earth to capture it and take its horns. After the Minotaurus is kidnapped, 17 and Goku are alerted. The pair infiltrate the ship and engage its forces to reclaim the rare animal, with Goku securing the animals and crew while 17 goes for the boss. 17 confronts the boss with Goku not to far behind him, and the boss of the group attempts to bribe them, but 17 refuses and kicks him into the ship window. The boss reveals he has a bomb in his body, and threatens to detonate it if they do not leave.

17, not having anymore options, tells Goku to apologize to his wife and children for him and entrusts the safety of the animals to him, telling him that he would have really loved to talk some more, and tackles the boss out the window into space, risking his own life in the process. Goku, not wanting 17 to die like this, transforms into Super Saiyan Blue to survive the vacuum of space and uses Instant Transmission, to rescue 17 and the boss. They warp to King Kai's planet where Goku introduces 17 to King Kai, and says that he plans on letting the boss self-destruct here to save the animals. While King Kai yells at Goku, saying that he is not a "bomb disposal unit", Dende interrupts and tells everyone that there is no bomb in the boss and he is revealed to be bluffing. Outraged, 17 angrily tells him to poke the button, the boss claiming that he cannot. 17 angrily demands him to push it and, to everyone's surprise, it just makes confetti rain from his body, claiming he had a birthday party to go to. It is revealed that the galactic patrol and Jaco arrived and assist Goku and 17 in getting the ship and animals back to Earth.

After Jaco leaves, 17 tells Goku that he will join the team to repay Goku for saving the animals and for his help and is willing to entrust Trunks and Goten to protect the island while he is gone. 17 reflects on the irony that he is on a team with the man he was programmed to kill. Goku tells him otherwise and mentions Tien Shinhan, Piccolo and Vegeta at one point in time were enemies with Goku and now they are all friends. 17 asks if Android 18 and his brother-in-law Krillin, the mini-monk as 17 called him, also apply. Goku confirms this, along with Majin Buu, which shocked 17. After being reassured he is no longer evil, as he is the good half of the evil, pure Kid Buu, 17 is surprised, saying that the savior of the world is turning his old enemies into friends. Shockingly, Goku tells 17 that he has no desire to be a savior, and, as a Saiyan, his only goals are to fight very strong people, but states that he cannot stand seeing innocent people or animals get hurt.

Android 17 and 18 in Tournament of Power

17 was visited by 18 and her family, they soon leave the island with Trunks, Goten, and Marron looking after the creatures. When arriving at Capsule Corp. he meets the other members of the Universe 7 team, 17 and Piccolo walked towards each-other and the two respectfully shake hands. After Goku brings Frieza to the group, 17 and the others are teleported by Whis to the World of Void. After the Tournament of Power began, 17 (along with Goku, Vegeta, 18, and Frieza) goes off on his own to fight against the other warriors. 17 is seen fighting opponents. 17 witnessed the destruction of Universe 9. He tells his sister to use their infinite energy to their advantage. When Goku was struggling against the Pride Troopers, 17 and 18 came to his rescue. 17 easily dodged Kahseral's attacks. After defeating the Pride Troopers, 17 interrupts the Kamikaze Fireballs' Magical Girl Transformation, only to be criticized by the Fireballs and Toppo. After the transformation, 17 fights Sanka Ku. He easily dodges her attacks and once he got serious, he knocked both her and her teammate, Vikal out of the arena. 17 then proceeds to fight Brianne de Chateau. 17 then saves Goku from an energy blast volley by Su Roas. Brianne and Su get away, with Android 17 simply saying to go onto the next one.

Android 17 observes the battle between Goku and Jiren. He alongside all of Team Universe 7 (except Vegeta) donate energy to the Spirit Bomb. After Goku gains access to Ultra Instinct -Sign-, 17 notes that Goku suddenly overcame the overwhelming difference in power. When Katopesla tries to attack Android 18 from behind, Android 17 catches him and knocks him away. Android 17 and 18 observe the fight between Goku and Kefla. After Goku is cornered by Team Universe 2, Android 17 and 18 go to help him. 17 fights Rozie and knocks her out of the arena. When 17 goes to help 18 against Ribrianne, he is ambushed by Viara, however he easily defeats him. After 18 defeats Ribrianne, 17 and 18 go help Goku against Zarbuto, Rabanra, and Zirloin, 17 fighting Rabanra. Android 17 alongside 18 and Goku are trapped in the Pretty Black Hole, however Super Saiyan Blue Goku breaks them out of the Hole. After Damon knocks Piccolo out of the arena, 17 and Goku find the small bug and knock him out of the arena after 17 trapped him in an Android Barrier. After Universe 4 is erased, Team Universe 3 attacks Team Universe 7, 17 alongside 18 fighting Viara, successfully managing to break his body. After Anilaza is created, 17 alongside Team Universe 7 engage the giant monster in combat, however they are overwhelmed. He is almost knocked out of the arena, however 18 sacrifices herself and launches 17 back on the arena. Android 17 alongside Goku, Vegeta, Gohan and Frieza engage Anilaza in a beam struggle, however Anilaza still manages to overwhelm them. Android 17 sees and damages Anilaza's energy reactor, giving his teammates the opportunity to knock him out of the arena.

With only Team Universe 7 and Team Universe 11 remaining, while Goku and Vegeta fight Jiren and Frieza fights Dyspo, Android 17 and Gohan fight Toppo, however they are at a disadvantage. 17 forms up a plan to knock both himself and Toppo out of the arena. 17 fights Toppo hand-to-hand and gets his shoulder dislocated. However he manages to trap himself and Toppo in an Android Barrier, giving Gohan the opportunity to knock both of them off the arena, however Toppo was able to free himself. Gohan leaves to help Frieza against Dyspo, leaving Android 17 to fight Toppo alone. After Gohan sacrifices himself to eliminate Dyspo with the help from Frieza, 17 continues his fight with Toppo by using his infinite energy to run out the tournament clock. Engaging in a energy clash that draws 17 to the edge of the arena, Golden Frieza blast Toppo in the back with Crazy Finger Beam, which allows 17 to over power Toppo and knock him to the edge on the other side of the arena. Abandoning his sense of justice, Toppo decides to ascend to a God of Destruction. Amused and unfazed by Toppo's transformation, Frieza attempts to deflect an Energy of Destruction blast by Toppo, but is overpowered and the arena is split in half. Drawing his attention to 17, Toppo easily overpowers 17 and almost eliminates Frieza, who is saved by 17 throwing a rock which lands Frieza on an edge of the arena.

17 engages God of Destruction Toppo on his own and his attacks prove to be ineffective but, still holding a significant speed advantage over his opponent, uses this to force Toppo to bury himself in rubble, although it doesn't work for long. 17 is finally caught by Toppo and bombarded with hundreds of Ki blasts; to 17's credit, he is able to withstand the onslaught. As Toppo prepared to destroy the area, 17 is saved by Frieza, who attempts to use his psychic powers to no avail. As 17 and Frieza begin to work together to fight Toppo, Jiren becomes annoyed that Toppo is struggling with them, so he fires his Power Impact at 17 and Frieza, blasting them away so Toppo and Jiren can fight Goku and Vegeta. After Vegeta defeats Toppo, 17 emerges from a large pile of rocks, injured but still in the fight. As Jiren faces down Goku, Vegeta and 17, Jiren congratulates them for making it this far without sacrificing who they are and finally unleashes his full power, quickly overwhelming and knocking out the exhausted Goku and Vegeta, forcing 17 to step in and stand alone against Jiren's full might.

During the battle, 17 is able to sneak up on Jiren and actually cause him serious damage to his back. Goku now realizes what Jiren's weakness is and that he takes considerable damage from hits if unguarded. Coordinating their attacks, Goku, Vegeta and 17 try again, but are unable to success. Eventually, the trio are incapacitated but are saved by Frieza, who dropkicks Jiren in the back of the head and says he is forgetting the rules and is going to just kill Jiren. Jiren blasts Frieza aside, but before he can finish him, he is stopped by 17, who is back up thanks to his infinite energy. Belmond asks what is 17's wish and he mentions he wants to take his family on a cruise, much to Belmond's annoyance. However, 17 asks Jiren what his wish is, saying Jiren only cares about power, so he is just curious. Jiren sorrowfully says even he has a wish. Belmond explains Jiren's origin and 17 realizes what Jiren's wish is. 17 says that while it is quite human of him, he can't erase the past, mocking Jiren for his refusal to accept things as they are. Jiren attacks 17 for mocking his wish, but 17 is able to hold his own and he tells Jiren that his wish won't erase what happened. Jiren throws 17 away and calls everyone weak. As Jiren prepares to finish off the Saiyans and 17, 17 jumps in front of them and sets up numerous barriers. Goku and 18 tell 17 to run and save himself, since he can actually stop and hurt Jiren, but 17 declines and tells Goku and Vegeta that he is giving up his wish. He wraps them in a barrier and tells them that he hopes he bought them enough time to heal up a little, smiling at them one last time. 17 tells Jiren that sacrificing himself for others is a very human thing to do and that he actually likes it. 18 screams frantically for 17 to move, but he drops his barrier as it was breaking, and jumps into Jiren's attack, stopping it cold in its tracks. Goku and Vegeta survive and fall to a small platform, with 17 nowhere to be found. 17 had self-destructed to stop Jiren’s attack and save Goku and Vegeta, to buy them time to heal up and finish the fight. Vegeta realizes that 17 had no desire to win the tournament and was only there to sacrifice himself if it came down to it. As Goku and 18 mourn 17, a drained Vegeta pulls himself up and challenges Jiren alone, refueled by 17's sacrifice.

Android 17 being brainwashed by Hell Fighter 17

Vlcsnap-2017-02-12-05h36m12s597

Android 17 vs Trunks

Dr. Gero and fallen colleague Dr. Myuu brainwash Android 17 telepathically via Hell Fighter 17, a Machine Mutant version of himself created by the two scientists in Hell with the design of merging with him into the ultimate killing machine. After attacking Trunks and before merging, 17 asks Android 18 to join him, a gesture which she mindlessly obeys until a fatal attack on Krillin brings 18 back to reality, causing her to attack her brother. Seeing what she has done, he then targets Marron so he can gain full control of 18, but 18 defends her from 17's energy wave, leaving her in a critical condition. Android 17 locates his Hell Fighter counterpart and the two finally merge, becoming Super 17.

The Z Fighters are shocked by the transformation until Vegeta attacks him, resulting in being knocked back by one punch. Majuub then tries in vain, followed by Goten and Trunks who attempt a combined attack, to no avail. Gohan then tries a Kamehameha, which does absolutely nothing to the super android, as it was absorbed. Dr. Gero then tells Super 17 to demonstrate his true power, which leads him to strike down every Z Fighter, again using only a single hit. The Saiyans then assume their Super Saiyan forms, but Super 17 releases a Flash Bomber, weakening them enough to revert from Super Saiyan.

Pan's ploy to have Gero bring 17 to a halt is ruined when Dr. Myuu reveals his programming placed him in full control of the super android, and so Super 17 kills Dr. Gero, for the second time. Piccolo and Dende create a gateway between Hell and Earth, allowing Goku to escape and confront Super 17, before any other Z Fighters can be killed. Goku is later joined by Android 18, whose appearance reminds 17 of both his own and Dr. Myuu's true nature, contributing to the ends of both Myuu, who was killed by 17's Shocking Death Ball, and Super 17 himself.

Android 17 and Hell Fighter 17 fusing

As is revealed after the end of the fight, the real Android 17's psyche gave the Z Fighters a chance to destroy the super android, and both Android 17 and Hell Fighter 17 in the process. By taking complete control of the body of Super 17 and powering up as Android 18 was launching shots of energy, 17 reveals to Goku that Super 17 cannot simultaneously move while absorbing energy, thus leaving him vulnerable to physical attacks. It is then that Goku uses the Super Dragon Fist technique to literally punch his way through Super 17, with the resulting hole rendering him unable to absorb the ensuing barrage of Kamehamehas, finally killing him.

Android 21 Arc

Main article: Android 21 Arc Android 17, while on his ranger duties, was kidnapped by 16 as a test subject for the "linking system". Unfortunately, moments after 17 woke up, the linking was severed soon after. However, moments after waking up, 17 discovered 18 and that her linked soul succeeded in the process. He also learned of the current situation: the Clones of the several fighters that appeared on Earth rampaging the city. 17, 18, 16, and a new android, Android 21, traveled around the Earth to try to stop them.

As the game progresses, 17 notices something strange about the new android, who was constantly groaning and screaming, at one point 17 even saying he disliked her tone. However, when finding Krillin, who was attempting to rescue 18, 21 finally snapped and told about "eating" him which surprised 17. Luckily, the group managed to subdue Krillin and 21, with 17 having to move Krillin's body somewhere.

Power

Manga and Anime

Due to the bio-mechanical and cybernetic enhancements Dr. Gero gave him, including an unlimited supply of energy that grants him limitless stamina and an accelerator recovery rate, he has power well-surpassing the standard capacity of Super Saiyan. He was also powerful enough to be an even match for Piccolo fused with Kami, however, he still had a long way to go, because he is said to have great potential, but this potential was never unleashed because of his absorption by Cell, it is after 10 years of training and working his life as a park ranger at the same time, that he was able to access much of it. According to Future Trunks, his power far exceeded his alternate timeline counterpart, even more so after he trained within the ten-year gap post-Cell Games, but it has to be noted that Future Android 17 hid his true power to toy with Gohan, so it is likely he did the same with Trunks, who thought Future Android 17 was weaker than he really was. 17, who was holding back his power as well, later fought the Super Saiyan Blue Goku. During the Imperfect Cell Saga, he was no match for Imperfect Cell after having absorbed hundreds of thousands of people to increase his power. In Dragon Ball Super, after meeting and fighting with Goku, 17 admits that he would have lost to Goku if Goku was present when he was awoken, however, due to his formerly cocky attitude, he never noticed nor mind about this possibility during the Android/Cell Saga after he was awaken, fought Piccolo, and then fought and absorbed by Cell, where the two parred and slowly overpowered him. He is also stronger than his sister, Android 18.

SS3 Goku vs 17

17 fights toe-to-toe with Super Saiyan 3 Goku

In Dragon Ball Super, Android 17 is currently the strongest android made by the Red Ribbon Army and is later chosen to join Team Universe 7 for the Tournament of Power. He is known to have gotten considerably stronger since he last appeared (implied to have trained in the 10 year plus gap since his last appearance), with Dende noting that if he were to still be an enemy of the Dragon Team it would be terrifying. In the anime, he overwhelms Super Saiyan Goku and then fighting on par with Super Saiyan Blue Goku (who was not using his full power, though Android 17 was not using his full power either).[12] After becoming Super Saiyan Blue, in the official subs Goku also notes that he did not intend to go Super Saiyan Blue during the battle, but did so because of how strong Android 17 was, though in the original Japanese Goku did not say this, instead saying he will try not to kill 17 upon using Super Saiyan Blue. In the manga, Android 17 is able to overwhelm Super Saiyan 2 Goku and proves to be comparable in strength to Super Saiyan 3 Goku when they battle.

During the Tournament of Power, he was shown blocking Hermila's Ki Blasts with his Android Barrier and effortlessly beating Jirasen. He was able to casually stop Kahseral's Justice Saber with one hand and easily stopped his Justice Bomber with his Android Barrier. He was able to effortlessly dodge most of Kakunsa's attacks and even when he was hit, Android 17 showed no signs of damage. Once Android 17 got serious he easily knocked Vikal and Kakunsa out of the arena. He was able to fight on par with the angry Ribrianne, although she was able to shatter his Android Barrier in one blow. He was able to catch Katopesla in his Whirlwind Speed Mode and blast him away. Android 17 was able to fight on par with Rozie, and blasted her out of the arena with a Photon Flash after the latter was hit by Ribrianne's Pretty Max Cannon. He also easily defeated Viara. Android 17 was able to fight on par with Rabanra, who had the powers of Kakunsa. He and Android 18 were also overwhelmed by the intense gravity of the Pretty Black Hole and were unable to stand, while base Goku was able to stand up, turn Super Saiyan Blue and destroy the Black Hole. Android 17 was almost knocked out of the arena by Damon, however he was saved by Goku. Despite receiving multiple blindsiding hits by Damon, Android 17 took no damage. While the rest of his team remained clueless to Damon's attacks, Android 17 showed very astute senses, able to determine that their foe was in reality diminutive in size, figuring it out while intentionally letting himself be hit. With Goku's aid to keep Damon grounded, Android 17 was able to trap Damon in an Android Barrier and then proceed to kick the Universe 4 foe out of the arena. Alongside Android 18, Android 17 was able to break Viara's armor. Against Anilaza, Android 17 was overwhelmed by the giant warrior, and almost knocked out, however, Android 18 sacrificed herself to save him. Together with all the remaining members of Team Universe 7, Android 17 engaged in a beam struggle with Anilaza, and even then, Anilaza almost overwhelmed Team Universe 7. However, Android 17 was able to damage Anilaza's energy reactor with a Barrier Punch, giving his teammates the opportunity to knock Anilaza out of the arena. Against Toppo, alongside Potential Unleashed Gohan, Android 17 was at a disadvantage against the Pride Trooper. However Android 17 was able to fire a Ki Blast that momentarily stunned Toppo, and was even able to briefly fight on par with him, however Toppo dislocated his shoulder. Despite this, Android 17 trapped both of them in an Android Barrier, giving Gohan the opportunity to knock both of them off the arena with an Ultimate Kamehameha, however Toppo was able to free himself.

Against Toppo by himself, Android 17 was able to dodge Toppo's attacks, and was able to briefly match him in a beam struggle, however, Toppo managed to almost overpower him and knock him out of the arena, however he was saved by Frieza. Together with Golden Frieza, Android 17 was able to turn the tide and overpower Toppo in the beam struggle, also managing to severely injure him. When Toppo unleashed his God of Destruction power, the gap between Android 17 and Toppo widened even more. His Android Barrier was also shattered by God of Destruction Toppo's Justice Flash. However, 17 was still fast enough to dodge Toppo's Destruction balls. When he was finally cornered by Toppo, Android 17 was able to withstand his blasts, although he was injured. Android 17 and Final Form Frieza's Ki Blasts were able to match Toppo's empowered Ki Blasts. Android 17 was even able to withstand a Power Impact from Jiren and is also the first fighter to actually cause noticeable damage to Jiren with a sneak attack. After he and his allies were completely overwhelmed by Jiren's blast, 17 was the first one to return to his feet and quickly recovered enough to engage Jiren. Through mind games and agility, 17 was able to hold his own against the mighty foe for a period of time. Ultimately, he was just strong enough to fend off Jiren's energy ball while protecting Goku and Vegeta in a barrier each, prior to this Goku instructed 17 to run as Goku himself believed 17 could actually stop or at least outlast Jiren having total faith in his power after seeing 17 hurt Jiren and get inside his head. However, this ultimately proved too much for him, as only by self-destructing could he repel the blast, killing himself.

In Dragon Ball GT, Gero notes that Android 17 was intended to have tremendous power greater than Cell's, but he was an imperfect and unsuccessful creation so his true power lay dormant. In the original Japanese version, Android 17 mentions that he's being filled with the power of Hell when he and Hell Fighter 17 open the portal between Hell & Earth. It is later commented by Dr. Myuu that the portal between Hell and Earth was the result of the power resonated by both. Android 17 had effectively become much stronger, on par with his Hell Fighter counterpart. By fusing with Hell Fighter 17, Android 17 is able to access this true dormant power and become Super 17.[13]

Android 17 doesn't actually get a chance to showcase this power. He only fights with Android 18, and it was his intention to recruit her rather than actually harm her. However he does kill Krillin, and he takes an assault from 18 without sustaining damage. He manages to have enough will power not to kill her with his attack.

Statements by authors and guidebooks

Android 17 wields more power than his sister, Android 18.[8]

In a statement for the Universe Survival Saga, Akira Toriyama noted that Android 17 has great potential.[4]

In a preview for Android 17's appearance in Dragon Ball Super he is referred to as the mightiest Android, whose power surpasses the ultimate after this decade-plus time gap since his previous appearance.[14]

Toshio Yoshitaka, a script writer for Dragon Ball Super, noted that he believed Android 17 was the third strongest on the initial Team Universe 7 from at the point of episode 92 (before Frieza joins) - only being weaker than Goku and Vegeta, though he notes that since Gohan and Piccolo have gotten stronger they may be superior in power to 17.[15]

Toshio Yoshitaka later stated that Goku utilizing Super Saiyan Blue in his recruitment of the initial members of Team Universe 7 was simply to gauge and motivate his opponents - specifically noting Android 17.[16]

Yoshitaka later went on to state that from his point of view, Android 17 was equal to Gohan in strength and both were stronger than Frost and Piccolo.[17]

Abilities

  • Accel Dance – Android 17 and his twin Android 18 double team with a combo of punches and kicks, ending with their Power Falling Star technique. 17's alternate future self and alternate future sister use it to kill Future Gohan in Dragon Ball Z: The History of Trunks, and it is also Android 17's ultimate move in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3. This move was never seen performed by the present androids in the anime and manga whatsoever, as they are already strong enough to take on the Z Fighters separately, without the need to team-up.
  • Android Barrier – A technique where energy is thrust out from the body in the form of a barrier with great force. The barrier can be used to both defend against oncoming projectiles and to expand and damage its surroundings. The barrier possess twice the defense that Android 17 normally has, allowing him to use the barrier to completely nullify attacks from people who are equal to or lesser in power to him.[18] During the Tournament of Power, 17 displays great control of it and able to use it for more the blocking moves such as trapping people inside of it limiting their movements or wrapping it around his hands to boost his attacking power.
    • Multiple Barrier - Android 17 can form a multiple layer barrier to increase his defenses.
    • Barrier Explosion - Android 17 can make his barrier explode. This attack was powerful enough to repel Jiren's full power energy blast. However, this attack leads Android 17 to death, as it is a self-destruction move.
  • Delta Combination – A rush attack used in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2.
  • Endgame – A powerful physical technique. He uses this technique to kill Dr. Gero.
  • Energy Attack – The most basic form of energy wave used by androids.

Future Android 17 fires the Finger Beam technique

  • Finger Beam – A barrage of narrow rays emitted from the index finger of its user, similar in execution to the Death Beam, which his alternate future self and his sister use in The History of Trunks special. However, present 17 is never seen using this otherwise.
  • Finish Sign – A power up move that Android 17 used in the Budokai Tenkaichi series and the Raging Blast series.
  • Flight – The ability to fly without the use of ki.
  • Flip Cyclone – Android 17 flips backwards while dodging enemy attacks, and attacks the opponent with a forward kick. Used against Piccolo. Named in Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z.

Android 17 charging the Electric Shot to attack Trunks

  • Full Power Energy Ball – An attack in which Android 17 fires two twin energy balls. His alternate future self uses this on Future Gohan in The History of Trunks. Android 17 uses this attack in Dragon Ball Z: Sagas, the Budokai Tenkaichi series, and the Raging Blast games.
  • Kiai – Android 17 uses a special type of kiai that explodes on contact with the opponent, whereas a regular kiai would just blow the opponent away. He uses this attack instead of actual energy attacks during his fight with Piccolo.
  • Hypnosis Technique – While under this from Hell Fighter 17, Android 17 used it in an attempt to brainwash Android 18, but it failed due to Krillin's intervention. Android 17 killed Krillin with a Power Blitz right after.
  • Non-stop Violence – Android 17 fires Double Power Energy Ball, then does a 3 hit combo with Android 18. They both then fire an Energy Wave. He and 18 are not shown to be performing this in the anime and manga, however, they can perform it in some video games.
  • Now We're Playing for Keeps! – A physical attack used by Android 17 against Piccolo.
  • Super Electric Strike – A technique where 17 after charging power into his hands swipes his arms to the side, releasing a wide wave of lime green energy at his opponent with an electric feel to it. Android 17's Ultimate Skill introduced in Dragon Ball Xenoverse and Xenoverse 2.
  • Side Bridge - A green swirling Energy Disc can return to its user like a boomerang. One of 17's Super Skills in Dragon Ball Xenoverse and Xenoverse 2.
  • Smile Charge - 17 uses Rapid Movement to surprise his opponent in order to grab them, then while holding them by the neck with his right hand, he charges up a Ki Blast in his left, then fires it in the opponents face. One of 17's Super Skills in Dragon Ball Xenoverse and Xenoverse 2.
  • Freedom Kick - 17 flies around the opponent before delivering a powerful kick. One of 17's Super Skills in Dragon Ball Xenoverse and Xenoverse 2.
  • Charged Ki Wave - A Stamina charging technique used by Android 17 as one of his Super Skills in Xenoverse 2.
  • Power Blitz – A strong energy wave fired from the palm of his hand. It can be launched as a single energy wave, concentrated into a ball of ki or volleyed in a rapid barrage of energy waves called Accel Shot. This is the signature finishing move for androids 18 and 17 in the Budokai series.
  • Accel Shot – Android 17's version of the Infinity Bullet. It is one of his ultimate attacks in Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit.
  • Power Falling Star – The technique used to finish the Accel Dance. Named in the Budokai series. It is called Full Power Energy Blast Volley in the first Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi.
  • Android Rush - Android 17's signature attack in the Raging Blast Series.
  • Portal Opening – A technique used with Hell Fighter 17 in order to open a portal between Earth and Hell.
  • Hell Spiral – A team attack used by Android 17, Android 18, and Android 16 in the Nintendo DS game Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors 2.
  • Villainous Mode – Android 17 is given the Villainous Mode power up in Dragon Ball Xenoverse. While using this power up his eyes glow red, and they gain a purple and black aura.
  • Buster Swing – Android 17's grapple toss in the Budokai series.
  • Power Strike – Android 17 kicks the opponent up in the air, and then he kicks and punches them down again. Used in the Budokai series.
  • Violence Hold – One of 17's techniques in Super Dragon Ball Z. Also used by 18.
  • Savage Combo – A powerful kick combo used in Super Dragon Ball Z. Also used by 18.
  • Avenging Fork – A spin kick technique used in Super Dragon Ball Z.
  • Fusion - Originally used by Android 17 and Hell Fighter 17 to fuse into Super 17 in Dragon Ball GT.

Android17Gun

Android 17's Handgun in Goku's dream during the Androids Saga

  • Gun - During the Android and Imperfect Cell Saga, Android 17 carries a handgun in a holster and during the Kid Buu Saga when he uses a rifle to threaten some hunters into raising their hands to trick them into giving energy to Goku's Super Spirit Bomb. Interestingly, Android 17 has never actually been seen firing a gun save for its use in Goku's nightmare during the Androids Saga.

Trivia

  • Android 17 and Android 18's respective human names, Lapis and Lazuli,[2] when combined, is "Lapis Lazuli," which is a deep-blue semi-precious stone prized for its color since antiquity. Coincidentally, their eyes are also blue.
  • Android 17 is revealed to be a very adept driver. He easily manages a stolen truck while driving off-road and successfully gave the Toad Warriors, a group of motorcycle bandits, the slip by luring them into an oncoming train and swerving at the last second. He also owns a tractor, and is shown driving it during his appearance as a park ranger in Dragon Ball Super. It may be explained due to 17's previous human life, as he may have known how to drive prior to becoming an Android.
  • In Budokai Tenkaichi 3, Chi-Chi says 17 is the younger twin.
  • Strangely, in the Dragon Ball Super 2nd opening, Android 17 is shown producing an aura, as he fires a blue energy wave, despite being a cyborg. As Androids, including cyborg types, are supposed to have infinite power supplies and energy that slowly recharges itself to full power without the need of auras, this is a possible oversight or mistake. However, it could be possible that Android 17 taught himself how to power up with an aura of his own.
  • In Dragon Ball GT during the Super 17 Saga, Android 17 is shown producing a black aura while opening up a portal between Earth and Hell with Hell Fighter 17.
  • Despite being created to kill Goku, he and Goku never actually meet in Dragon Ball Z due to the fact that Goku was suffering from a heart virus, and later Android 17 would be absorbed by Cell when Goku was at Kami's Lookout waiting to train in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.
    • However, in an anime filler, Android 17 and his sister appear in Goku's nightmare during the time he was still recovering from his Heart Virus. In the dream, Goku imagines a nightmarish scenario where Android 17 and 18 brutally kills Gohan, Krillin, Chi-Chi, and Future Trunks. Goku was unaware, however, that the Androids of his timeline were not the same as the ones in Future Trunks' timeline. Presumably Goku's ability to know what they looked like may be the result of his psychic abilities.
    • Though Goku encounters and fights Super 17 in Dragon Ball GT, he never actually encounters the original Android 17. In Dragon Ball GT, Super 17 is the fusion of Android 17 and Hell Fighter 17, not the original Android 17.
    • It is not until the Universe Survival Saga in Dragon Ball Super that Goku and 17 actually meet each other and fight.
  • Android 17 is the only participant in the Tournament of Power to die without having his universe erased at the same time.
