"Why do you think I work alone down there, protecting that whole island by myself? Because I'm a one-man army."
— Android 17 to the Galactic Poachers leader in "Hunt the Poaching Ring! Goku and Android 17's Joint Struggle!"

Android 17 (人造人間17号 Jinzōningen Jū Nana-Gō, lit. "Artificial Human No. 17"), Lapis (ラピス Rapisu) when he was an ordinary human,[2] is the twin brother of Android 18 and Dr. Gero's seventeenth android creation, designed to serve Gero's vendetta against Goku. Despite his interests not initially deviating from this expectation, Android 17 takes it upon himself to kill Dr. Gero, who is uncooperative with Android 18's curiosity in activating Android 16 and deemed inferior by 17.

Android 17 makes a return a decade later in Dragon Ball Super, working as a national park ranger preserving wildlife from poachers. He is married and has a child, with two more children being adopted. He is asked by Goku to join Team Universe 7 in the Tournament of Power and due to Goku and Frieza's sacrifice to take out Jiren, he is left as the sole fighter remaining by the end of the tournament and the one who makes the wish on the Super Dragon Balls.

Appearance

Android 18 and Android 17

Android 17 is a fair-skinned young man with a similar appearance to his fraternal twin sister. He is average in height, though slightly taller than his sibling, with a slim frame and lean-built. He has straight shoulder-length black hair that parts above his forehead, thin eyebrows, and narrow blue eyes. Common among Dr. Gero's androids, 17 has a gold hoop earring on each ear. Originally, he wore an orange bandanna around his neck. He wears a short sleeve black shirt with the Red Ribbon Army's logo on the left of his chest, and underneath dons a long-sleeve white shirt. He wears a belt to hold up his medium blue jeans which have a tear just above the knee of the left leg. Just below the first belt he wears another belt with a gun holster and another pouch, although he discards it by the time the Androids arrive at Goku's house. Android 17 wears green socks and blue and white sneakers.

By the Buu Saga, he wears a teal blue jacket over his clothes along with white gloves as the collar of his jacket is light blue, and during the Super 17 Saga, he wears a tan, knee-length jacket and off-white gloves. The collar and folded sleeves of his jacket were cream yellow. When appearing in Dragon Ball Super, Android 17 wears a white shirt with green sleeves that has "MIR" imprinted across his chest in black letters, and a pair of blue jeans. He has black shoes and wears a tan colored belt, along with a pair of black leather gloves. On his left sleeve is an orange armband that says "RANGER".

Personality

Initially a reckless anarchist, Android 17 later reveals himself to be little more than a rebel without a cause. He finds joy in causing panic and acts on whims. Most of his choices during his initial appearance were motivated by what he called "The Game", referring to their quest to find and exterminate Goku.

While reveling in his enhanced might setting him apart from others, Android 17 hated his cybernetics that were forced on him, as Android 18 revealed when refusing Semi-Perfect Cell's attempts at convincing Android 18 into merging with him. This is likely because of the trauma he experienced due to being kidnapped by Gero. It may also be due to his love of nature, as he was no longer natural when Gero turned him into an Android.

When he is revived by Shenron because of a wish that restored both the lives of all of Cell's victims and all the damage caused during the Cell Games, Android 17 goes on to live a life of peace in obscurity. At the end of Dragon Ball Z, Android 17 provided energy for Goku's Super Spirit Bomb to destroy Kid Buu. He reappears in Dragon Ball GT when the scientists Dr. Gero and Dr. Myuu brainwash him telepathically, and he is eventually fused with Hell Fighter 17, a Machine Mutant version of himself created by the scientists in Hell, to form Super 17. Even without the ability to maintain his mind, however, 17 still exhibits sensitivity, mostly towards his sister. This is in stark contrast to Future Android 17, where he is a murderous sociopath who cares for no one but himself and his sibling. While under Dr. Myuu's control, he forces his transformed-self to reveal his own weak point, thus allowing Goku to kill him. On a related note, Android 17 also showcases some moral restraints, as when witnessing Cell brutally dispatch Piccolo, he, with clear horror and disgust, denounced Cell as a beast for what he did to the Namekian.

Android 17's strongest personal trait is his sense of self. He does his best to resist the will of Dr. Gero, and later, Dr. Myuu, and fights a futile battle against Cell to assert his identity and his pride. He is also overconfident in his power, believing that nobody was stronger than him and stalwartly denying it if someone said otherwise. This changed when he saw Cell and Android 16's strength in battle.

He is also somewhat sadistic, as he has a Colt M1911, using it against civilians in lieu of his own power. He seemingly finds amusement in the panic which he causes with it, in both Future Trunks' and the current timelines. This pistol can be seen holstered to his character model in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3.

As noted by his sister, Android 17 is somewhat similar to Goku, showing a childlike attitude at times. He often tries to find a fun means to accomplish his goals, as he made his attempt to locate Goku as nothing more than a game, even deliberately avoiding asking for directions in order to "play the game." Similarly, he has a tendency to go off the road during their travel to Goku's house simply because he thought it was "fun", much to 18's irritation. In the anime, when he holds up two hunters in order to trick them into donating their energy to Goku's Super Spirit Bomb needed to defeat Kid Buu, Android 17 says that they won the game before raising his own hand as well.[3]

Android 17's rebellious personality has since been tempered by his occupation, as he channeled his somewhat anarchistic and childish tendencies into handling poachers and other persons of illegal intent or occupation within the Royal Nature Park with startling efficiency. His hyperactive nature merely lacked a proper focus before, and when given an ongoing objective, it can be seen that 17 is extremely focused and dedicated to achieving his goals. 17, however, did not lose his sense of humor in his work, as when he stopped the two hunters and tricked them into giving energy to the Super Spirit Bomb, he was clearly amused.

His slide into maturity is likely a contributing factor to his marriage. He also apparently has a soft-spot for children. Despite being relatively indifferent to reuniting with his brother-in-law Krillin, he was very warm to meeting his niece Marron. In addition, he had a child with his wife, plus adopted two more. It is possible that his decision to adopt two of his three children may have been influenced by his kidnapping at the hands of Dr. Gero.

By the time of the Universe Survival Saga, Android 17 has become much calmer than before, and is a gentleman, suggesting that he is more mature than he had been in the past. Whereas before he was random in his decisions, going purely on his emotional state, he now showed a more collected and pragmatic nature. He has also become very casual and humble, not showing much personal desire beyond providing for his family and protecting the wildlife. He also seems to take his opponents more seriously, a complete departure from his previous superiority-complex self and the murderously sadistic nature of his alternate timeline counterpart.[4] 17 is shown to be very nonchalant and not swayed by any kind of news, even when learning of his potential death should Universe 7 lose in the Tournament of Power, initally refusing Goku's offer to participate despite the circumstances. He also apparently has a soft spot for children, while indifferent to meeting his sister. His child like attitude however is still very present as well as his desire to have a bit of fun while on his way to accomplish his goals, this was mostly shown in the Tournament of Power during his many fights with Universe 2 as he always played along with their over the top introductions and antics of love often playing the role of the "villain". However in times of crisis he is capable of being very serious, and even very heroic and this was mostly on display during his final living moments of the Tournament of Power with acts like throwing himself in front of the exhausted and injured Goku and Vegeta to take hits for them due to his infinite energy or even going as far as killing himself to save them from elimination at the hands of Jiren (although 17 is shown to have survived his own technique later on). Another newer personality trait is his tactical sense of fighting. While outclassed by the likes of Top and Jiren, 17 is able to still fight with them and hold them off for considerable lengths of time. This was mostly shown during his final stand against Jiren, where 17 was actually able to get inside of Jiren's head upon learning of his past and his wish for the Super Dragon Balls and was able to use this to give him a slight edge for a moment.

As shown from his choice of career, Android 17 is very outdoorsy, and finds it hard to sit still, seemingly stemming from his previously hyperactive nature. His love of the outdoors may have been influenced by the nature-loving Android 16, with whom 17 was close friends. 17's choice in a wife, a zoologist, may have been influenced by his occupation as a Park Ranger and enjoyment of the wild. 17 cares greatly for nature and was even willing to die to save it by taking on intergalactic space poachers and was willing to allow himself to suffocate in space to prevent them from blowing up. At the same time, not unlike his sister, Android 17 is not without a measure of materialist desire. His greatest dream is to own a large luxury boat, although it is for a simple goal of traveling the world with his wife and children. During the Tournament of Power, he showed much more concern for his sister's well being. When quickly realizing that she sprained her ankle, despite her denial of it, 17 quickly helped tend to it. Also, whereas before 17 would keep out of 18's battles or insist on fighting alone himself, he was shown in the tournament to work in great synergy with 18.

Android 17 appears to have a talent for behavior modifcation, as he managed to tame and reform the regenerated Cell Juniors to the point where he was able to work with and coexist with them despite their homicidal natures.

Biography

Background

Lapis Lazuli SD

Lapis as a child in SD

Android 17 was originally a human named Lapis,[2] and the younger of he and his twin sister Lazuli.[5] The twins were notorious delinquents, who Dr. Gero would meet by chance while looking for fresh material for his experiments. He then kidnapped them and restructured them into Android 17 and Android 18.[6]

However, despite being referred to as androids or cyborgs and commonly regarded as such, both Android 17 and his sister are practically neither. Bulma stated while looking at 17's blueprint that he was human-based, but just about everything has been enhanced with bio-organic components.[7] His only mechanical parts are the emergency deactivation controller and self-destruction device (removed).[8] Dragon Ball Super reaffirms this, with Gohan stating that the androids have been modified on cellular level to be superhuman.[9]

With Android 17 and his sister Android 18, Dr. Gero reverted to the old way which consisted in modifying a human being with cybernetic implants. However, they are the first of their kind to be entirely restructured at the cellular level thanks to bio-technology and genetic engineering. Their power comes from a small perpetual energy reactor internalized within their bodies, which provides them with inexhaustible energy and stamina. Since they are human-based, they can become stronger if they train. Though they do not require food to sustain themselves, they still need to hydrate. They also age much slower than normal humans, due to the slower rate of decay of the artificial cells in their bodies.[2]

Android 17 betrays and murders Dr. Gero

Android 17 and his twin sister Android 18 are awakened by Dr. Gero when he is pressed into a desperate situation by the Z Fighters, who have surpassed his expectations because of the intense training they endured after Gero collected their statistic data. Initially, 17 and 18 feigned obedience to the doctor because he carried an emergency Shut Down Remote as a fail-safe against them. Soon after, the Z Fighters arrive and attempt to break into the doctor's laboratory. This momentarily distracts Gero, and 17 steals the remote from him. Much to Gero's horror, 17 crushes the remote and tells Gero that he will not put them to sleep again. Suddenly, Vegeta blasts the door down and the androids are surrounded by the Z Fighters. Dr. Gero tells Android 18 and Android 17 to kill the Z Fighters, mentioning that they destroyed Android 19 and almost killed him. Android 17 asks if 19 was an energy absorption model and the one who converted him into android, and Gero replies that he was. Android 18 asks if Gero went back to the old energy absorption model on a more recent android because infinite energy models like she and Android 17 were too powerful to control. Dr. Gero tells them that it does not matter now, and orders the pair to kill the Z Fighters, but 17 says that they will fight when they want. Gero is even more upset when Android 18 begins inspecting a chamber labeled "16". Android 18 notices that 16 is also an infinite energy model and asks how the android inside is different from them, but Gero tells her to get away from 16's chamber. Android 17 and Android 18 want to activate him but Dr. Gero adamantly refuses. Fed up with the mad scientist, 17 murders Gero by impaling and decapitating him before stepping on his living head. Android 17 again tells Android 18 to activate Android 16, but a desperate Future Trunks says that he will not let there be any more androids, and transforms into a Super Saiyan before firing a Buster Cannon into the lab. When the smoke clears, Gero's lab is destroyed. However, Vegeta tells Future Trunks that the blast was pointless, as Android 17, Android 18, and the chamber containing Android 16 have survived.

Android trio formed

Android 17 suggests they open the chamber at once, as its support systems were disconnected. Once he is activated, Android 17 asks Android 16 what it feels like to be free for the first time in years, and tells him that Dr. Gero warned them not to activate him, saying he would destroy them all. Android 18 asks what Gero meant, but Android 16 does not respond. Android 17 then asks Android 16 whether he does not want to tell them or whether he is just the strong, silent type, but Android 16 still says nothing. Android 17 then asks if Android 16 was created to kill Goku, and Android 16 simply says yes. Android 17 says that he hates the idea of following Gero's programming, but feels that they need a sense of purpose. 17 and 18 decide to find and challenge Goku; not because they have been commanded to do so, but merely as a form of entertainment. The three androids leave the ruined laboratory to find Goku, ignoring the present Z Fighters.

Android-16-17-18vs

Android 17 with 18 and 16

As the androids pass over a mountain road, Android 17 decides to land, and Android 18 and Android 16 follow suit. Android 18 asks why they have landed, and Android 17 says that there is no rush, and they might as well enjoy the trip. Android 18 asks if they are going to walk, but 17 says that when a car passes by, they will take it. 18 says that Android 17 is still part human, as he has the male love of pointless amusement. Android 17 asks Android 16 if he understands, since he was created from a human male too. Android 16 then reveals that he was never a human, making him fundamentally different from Android 17 and Android 18. Android 17 is surprised that Gero had the capability to make a true android, and wonders why he returned to cybernetics afterwards. When Vegeta in his Super Saiyan form intercepts the trio, 17 and 18 implore 16 to step in and fight, interested to see him in action, as that was their main purpose for activating him in the first place. However, Android 16 refuses to fight him, thus prompting Android 18 to volunteer. Throughout the battle, Vegeta gains some hits, but Android 18 keeps with him blow for blow. 17 notes that Vegeta is much stronger than what Dr. Gero's data indicated, and is impressed with his fighting abilities. When Android 18 overpowers Vegeta in the fight, Future Trunks, Krillin, Piccolo and Tien Shinhan arrive as Vegeta's reinforcement. Android 17 takes the opportunity to ask if Android 16 will join the fight, though, as he initially assumed, Android 16 would once again opt out. When Vegeta tells Android 18 that he would rather die alone than accept assistance from Goku and his friends, Android 17 tells the Z Fighters to respect the code of the warrior and not interfere with Android 18 and Vegeta's battle and promises to deal with anyone who does.

Android17ChokingTien01

17 effortlessly choking Tien

When 18 breaks Vegeta's arm during the battle, Future Trunks breaks Android 17's non-interference truce because he could not bear to see Vegeta injured. Android 17 intervenes and fights against Future Trunks, dealing one hard hit to his head, almost knocking him out. Seeing this, Piccolo and Tien Shinhan fly towards the battle as well. Android 17 sees Piccolo coming towards him and kicks the Namekian out of his way. Android 17 also puts Tien in a headlock when the latter tries to punch him. Having gotten back up, Vegeta attempts to fly towards Android 17 and Tien, but Android 18 grabs his foot. As Android 17 chokes Tien, Future Trunks gets up and runs toward Android 18, who swings Vegeta into Future Trunks, sending them both to the ground. 17 lets go of Tien and then effortlessly defeats Piccolo, dealing a single blow that nearly tears through the latter. Vegeta manages to get up and and fires a Ki Blast at Android 18 with his good arm, however, Android 18 dodges the blast and flies over to Vegeta before giving him rough beating and ending the fight by breaking his other arm, causing him to lose consciousness and revert to his base form. Android 17 notes that Vegeta's hair has changed back to its black color and his glow is gone, and says that the transformation was very weird. Android 18 notes that the 'other guy' (Future Trunks) was the same way, and Android 17 wonders who he was, as they have no data on him. He and Android 18 then fly back up to the road and land near Krillin, frightening him. Android 17 tells him that the others are still alive, and that he should feed them some Senzu Beans right away. He then tells a speechless Krillin that they will fight the Z Fighters whenever they feel up to it. Android 18 asks if he will inquire about Goku's location. Android 17 says that it will be more fun to find it on their own, and says that maybe even Goku will look for them. The pair then meet up with Android 16, who is still nearby, looking off into the distance. Android 17 asks what he is looking at, and Android 16 simply says that the birds flew away because they were too loud. Android 17 seems confused by this, and Android 18 suggests they fly to someplace where more cars will pass by.

Krillin talks to the Androids

The androids decide to go to the nearest town to get 18 some more clothes, (as her outfit was damaged by Vegeta), and to find a car. As they are about to leave, Krillin rushes over to them, telling them to wait. Android 17 asks what he wants, and Krillin asks if they just want to kill Goku, or take over the world. 17 says that for now they are just going to kill Goku, and will decide what to do next afterwards. Krillin asks why they want to kill Goku, since it was Dr. Gero who hated him, and he is now dead. 17 replies that Gero has nothing to do with it and that it is just a game, which is why he did not ask Krillin where Goku is. Krillin asks if they would leave Goku alone if he begged them, but Android 16 replies that they would not, they were created to kill Goku. 17 agrees, and tells Krillin hurry and give his friends some Senzu Beans. Android 18 then kisses Krillin on the cheek, and the androids fly off.

This is one of many examples that set Android 17 and Android 18 apart from their future timeline counterparts, especially considering how much stronger they are in the mainstream timeline than in Future Trunks' future.

As they fly over a snowy area in the north, the androids spot a Lucky Foods van parked along the road next to a rest stop, while two Lucky Foods workers are drinking coffee. The trio land to check it out. The workers notice and attempt to stop the Androids, but are frightened when Android 16 lifts the van and dumps out its cargo. The androids then drive off, and Android 17 plans to head to Goku's House. Android 18 reminds him that she wants new clothes first, and 17 agrees to take care of that first. As they drive, Android 18 asks Android 17 if he even knows where Goku's House is, and 17 says that he doesn't and has been driving on pure instinct. Android 16 then chimes in with the house's coordinates, and says they can be there in a few minutes if they fly. 18 agrees with flying there, but 17 says that small things in life are what make it fun.

In Dragon Ball Z Kai, 17 informs 18 that they are about to enter a town and he will stop to get her some clothes. Suddenly, two police officers follow them and order them to stop. The androids exit the vehicle and are promptly arrested for stealing the van. The androids are handcuffed by the officers, but 16 easily breaks them off of his wrists and 18 throws the police car into a nearby mountain. 17 and 18 remove their cuffs and the trio continues on their way, leaving the terrified officers behind. Once they reach the town, Android 18 goes into a store to get more some clothes. She chooses a cowgirl outfit, which she says looks hideous but is the best she can expect from a backwater place. She leaves without paying, and the androids drive off as the store owner bangs on their van. He then calls the police, and soon police cars begin to pursue the androids' van. Android 18 flies out and punches the cars, causing them to crash into each other.

As the trio drives to Goku's home, Android 17 suddenly comes to a stop. He and Android 18 get out, and Android 17 asks if she felt a change in the atmospheric pressure. 18 says that she did, and Android 16 says that it came from the outskirts of West City. He then says that two organics with powerful ki are fighting. Android 17 says that he never told them he was equipped with a Power Radar, but Android 16 replies that he never asked. Android 17 asks who is fighting, but Android 16 says neither are in his databanks, although one of them rivals Android 17 in power. Android 17 says that his Power Radar is malfunctioning, as no one rivals him in power. The androids then decide to continue onwards, unaware that the combatants are Piccolo, who recently fused with Kami, and Cell, the ultimate creation of Dr. Gero created from the genes of the most powerful warriors to walk the Earth.

Android17-16VsPiccolo

Android 17 prepares to fight Piccolo

Later, Android 17, Android 18 and Android 16 arrive at Kame House, asking where Goku is. Piccolo, after fusing with Kami, challenges Android 17, hoping that he can defeat at least one of them and prevent Imperfect Cell from absorbing one of his targets and achieving his perfect form, which would spell doom. Android 17 accepted Piccolo's challenge and contends to fighting Piccolo one-on-one, rather than fight with Android 18, vastly increasing Piccolo's chance to win. Piccolo appears to have the upper hand in the battle until Android 17 confesses that he had been holding back and playing with the Namekian. Once both choose to go at full power, they find that they are an even match. Equal in both power and strength; Android 17 had an advantage because of his unlimited energy and speed. Piccolo would match that with his regeneration and variety of energy attacks, such as the Scatter Shot, Light Grenade, as well as a plethera of other attacks. Android 17 almost gets injured by Piccolo's Hellzone Grenade attack, but he protects himself with an Android Barrier, much to Piccolo's dismay.

"He keeps hoping he'll get lucky and hit me."
— Android 17, while fighting Piccolo in "The Monster is Coming"

The fight is an apparent draw until Cell's arrival interrupts the match. Ironically, Cell is able to detect Android 17 through the nearby presence of Piccolo, who had engaged Android 17 in an effort to impede Cell's progression to perfection. Piccolo assists Android 17 in avoiding Cell and Android 17 thanks him in return. Android 17 then learns Cell is another of Gero's creations and he needs to absorb him and Android 18 to complete his design. While Piccolo tries to aid in the battle against Cell, he is tossed aside after Cell admits to have become stronger. Android 17 ends up horrified when he witnesses Cell brutally disposing of the Namekian. While Android 17 is struggling to defend himself, Android 16 steps in to fight Imperfect Cell and is able to hold him off for some time by repeatedly surprising him with intense attacks such as his Hell's Flash. However, this sudden turning of tables creates an overconfidence in Android 17, who lingers to the scene of the battle, where the wounded but thriving Cell surprises and ultimately absorbs him, triggering his transformation into Semi-Perfect Cell.

Cell DBZ Ep 152 001

Android 17 being absorbed by Imperfect Cell

Android 17 is killed when Semi-Perfect Cell self-destructs. 17's life is restored after the Z Fighters use the Dragon Balls to revive those who died as a result of Cell's campaign. A second wish made to Shenron by Krillin removes the Android Bombs within Lapis and Lazuli's bodies. Krillin originally intended to use the wish to turn Android 17 and his sister into humans, but this proves beyond Shenron's power. Krillin did this because he thought 17 and 18 were meant to be a couple, until Android 18 angrily corrected him and revealed that 17 was actually her twin brother.

After being revived, 18 told 17 how he came to life

After the conflict with Cell, Android 17 is reborn in the same place Cell was destroyed thanks to Shenron. He was shortly greeted by his sister who told him he was revived and had his bomb removed thanks to Krillin. The two then part off to live since their mission to kill was no longer necessary as Goku had been killed when Cell self-destructed.[10]

Android 17 went on to travel the world, he eventually arrived at Monster Island where he fought a group of poachers and befriended the ranger there. He eventually married the ranger - who is also a zoologist - after becoming a ranger himself.[11]

Android 17 becomes a park ranger in the wildlife preserve area of a gigantic royal nature park, where he is well paid. He is an outstanding guard who does not hold back against poachers. It is an ideal job for 17, as he loves to be on his own and is not big on cooperating with others. Since he is so good at his job, he takes in a high salary. Android 17 and his wife have one child and two adopted children, and live happily in an isolated house inside the nature park. He went and met 18 and Krillin one time, but did not talk about what he had been up to, possibly because he considers such a wholesome lifestyle embarrassing considering his past behavior.[2]

In the manga, at some point after the Cell Games, Android 17 tamed the regenerated Cell Juniors and allowed them to live with him on Monster Island.[12]

Kid Buu had destroyed the Earth with his Planet Burst, killing Android 17 again along with nearly everyone else. While fighting Kid Buu on the Sacred World of the Kai, Vegeta asks Dende to make a wish to Porunga for the Earth and the lives of all its good-willed inhabitants to be restored. The fact that Android 17 was not exempt from this wish, as confirmed by his appearance, is proof of Android 17's inherent goodness.

Goku is gathering energy for the Super Spirit Bomb in an effort to defeat Kid Buu, and in a mountainous region, Android 17 is walking down a forest trail when he recognizes Goku's voice, then encounters two hunters passing through. Android 17 raises his rifle to trick the two into raising their hands, unaware that they are supplying Goku with their energy. To the hunters' confusion, the android smiles and proclaims "You beat me to it", before raising one of his own hands.[3] The manga-equivalent of this scene does not feature the hunters; Android 17 merely raises his hands to pass on his energy while saying "So it's Goku, huh? I haven't heard that voice in a long time." However, the scene with the hunters is retained in Kai.

While recruiting members for the Tournament of Power, Android 18 is named as a suggestion and Gohan also suggests Android 17. Goku eventually meets with Dende, who personally takes him to the island where 17 is located, also telling Goku that not only is 17 a changed man, rid of the shadow that once inhabited his heart, he is also a lot stronger. Mr. Popo jumps in and tells Goku he has been at the lookout, occupied by the space around him, and telling him that he is not paying attention to what is happening on the Earth.

Android 17 now works for a wildlife reserve, spending the days protecting animals on the island while constantly fighting off poachers wanting to capture them, along with a rare Minotaurus, who 17 believes is the last of its kind. Goku, having finally met Android 17 as he is battling more poachers, greets him. Goku states that he knows that 17 is the one he was looking for, because his eyes resemble those of his sister, and 17 replies that they are twins after all. 17 tells Goku that he is free to help him if he wants, after an enormous group of poachers show up, and advices him not to kill any poacher.

After chasing them off, Goku and 17 go explore a cave where the Minotaurus lives, the beast attacks them and 17 begs Goku not to fight back. Gaining the sky, 17 describes the Minotaurus as an endangered species under the Red Data Book, and mentions that this species used to be docile, but evolved to become very hostile to humans because of their constant hunting. The horns of the Minotaurus are highly prized and valued, and that is why Android 17 has to keep fighting off poachers with his own life.

Super Saiyan Goku vs. Android 17

As the sun goes down, Goku and 17 discuss and reflect each other's past, and they mention how they never had a chance to fight because of Cell absorbing 17. A curious and excited Goku exclaims that he wants to try out Android 17's current strength, and transforms into a Super Saiyan, wanting "strong friends" to aid him in the Tournament of Power, and rushes at him without warning. After a few clashes, and two heavy blows from 17, Goku is overwhelmed, and states he is surprised by 17's new strength. 17 replies that he had not been sitting around by doing nothing. As the fight raged on, 17 shows some concerns about fighting near the forest, after Goku nearly crashed into it after a swift kick by 17, which sent the Saiyan flinging down, worrying 17. Fortunately, Goku stopped at the last second from hitting the nearby trees, to 17's slight relief, and Goku decided to take the fight to the skies to avoid hitting the forest again.

Android 17 uses the Android Barrier to counter Goku's God Kamehameha

Goku reveals that he never intended for things to go this far, but finally decides to transform into Super Saiyan Blue. Android 17 was initially annoyed that Goku was condescendingly holding back until Goku asked Android 17 if he was holding back as well, to which 17 replied that he was. Goku wants 17 to go all-out as there is no forest to hold them back now, he then fires a God Kamehameha at Android 17, who blocks it with his Energy Shield. 17 appeared to be struggling with Goku's blast, but, after the blast explodes, obscuring him briefly, he suddenly appears and charges at Goku. Both fighters engage in an evenly, but explosive fist-to-fist clash, both screaming, apparently struggling, after another explosion, they engage in another suspenseful fight, until they end up splashing into the ocean, 17 stops the fight, seeing the dolphins breaching. Worried about their safety, which Goku notices, 17 asks for a break.

17 comments that his old self would have surely been defeated by Goku if they had fought, but Goku is not quite sure. 17 tells Goku that he knowingly was not serious yet. Goku admits it, but claims 17 is holding back as well. Both of them smile at each other, hinting that both assumptions are indeed correct. Goku is now glad that 17 is a "good guy" now and not an enemy, as he would be a lot of trouble to deal with.

While having coffee and a small talk, 17 tells Goku about his family, and mentions that he met his wife during his days in his job, and had 1 child with her and adopted 2 others. Goku then brings up the golden question: Will he fight in the Tournament of Power? 17 refuses because he already received a lot of money from his job through salaries, as Goku lied to him about Zeni being the prize, and not being able to leave the island in case more poachers come. Despite Goku offering Trunks and Goten to watch over the island, 17 still refuses, also knowing that Goku is hiding something. Goku tells 17 about being erased should Universe 7 lose, and 17 is not swayed by this news at all, stating that if everyone gets erased then it cannot be helped, ultimately refusing Goku's offer and wishing him good luck in finding someone else.

17 debt 2

Android 17 owes Krillin his life

In the manga, however, Android 17 accepts to fight in the Tournament of Power after knowing Krillin will participate, as he feels he owes him a debt.

In the anime, as 17 is leaving, an alien force arrives above space and is hunting the endangered Minotaurus and begins to invade Earth to capture it and take its horns. After the Minotaurus is kidnapped, 17 and Goku are alerted. The pair infiltrate the ship and engage its forces to reclaim the rare animal, with Goku securing the animals and crew while 17 goes for the boss. 17 confronts the boss with Goku not to far behind him, and the boss of the group attempts to bribe them, but 17 refuses and kicks him into the ship window. The boss reveals he has a bomb in his body, and threatens to detonate it if they do not leave.

Android 17 faces the Poacher Boss

17, not having anymore options, tells Goku to apologize to his wife and children for him and entrusts the safety of the animals to him, telling him that he would have really loved to talk some more, and tackles the boss out the window into space, risking his own life in the process. Goku, not wanting 17 to die like this, transforms into Super Saiyan Blue to survive the vacuum of space and uses Instant Transmission, to rescue 17 and the boss. They warp to King Kai's Planet where Goku introduces 17 to King Kai, and says that he plans on letting the boss self-destruct here to save the animals. While King Kai yells at Goku, saying that he is not a "bomb disposal unit", Dende interrupts and tells everyone that there is no bomb in the boss and he is revealed to be bluffing. Outraged, 17 angrily tells him to poke the button, the boss claiming that he cannot. 17 angrily demands him to push it and, to everyone's surprise, it just makes confetti rain from his body, claiming he had a birthday party to go to. It is revealed that the galactic patrol and Jaco arrived and assist Goku and 17 in getting the ship and animals back to Earth.

DBS 87 4

Android 17 agrees to enter the Tournament

After Jaco leaves, 17 tells Goku that he will join the team to repay Goku for saving the animals and for his help and is willing to entrust Trunks and Goten to protect the island while he is gone. 17 reflects on the irony that he is on a team with the man he was programmed to kill. Goku tells him otherwise and mentions Tien Shinhan, Piccolo and Vegeta at one point in time were enemies with Goku and now they are all friends. 17 asks if Android 18 and his brother-in-law Krillin, the mini-monk as 17 called him, also apply. Goku confirms this, along with Majin Buu, which shocked 17. After being reassured he is no longer evil, as he is the good half of the evil, pure Kid Buu, 17 is surprised, saying that the savior of the world is turning his old enemies into friends. Shockingly, Goku tells 17 that he has no desire to be a savior, and, as a Saiyan, his only goals are to fight very strong people, but states that he cannot stand seeing innocent people or animals get hurt.

After defeating the Pride Troopers, 17 interrupts the Kamikaze Fireballs' Magical Girl Transformation, only to be criticized by the Fireballs and Top. After the transformation, 17 fights Sanka Ku. He easily dodges her attacks and once he got serious, he knocked both her and her teammate, Vikal out of the arena. 17 then proceeds to fight Brianne de Chateau. 17 then saves Goku from an energy blast volley by Su Roas. Brianne and Su get away, with Android 17 simply saying to go onto the next one.

When 17 goes to help 18 against Ribrianne, he is ambushed by Viara, however he easily defeats him. After 18 defeats Ribrianne, 17 and 18 go help Goku against Zarbuto, Rabanra, and Zirloin, 17 fighting Rabanra. Android 17 alongside 18 and Goku are trapped in the Pretty Black Hole, however Super Saiyan Blue Goku breaks them out of the Hole. After Damon knocks Piccolo out of the arena, 17 and Goku find the small bug and knock him out of the arena after 17 trapped him in an Android Barrier. After Universe 4 is erased, Team Universe 3 attacks Team Universe 7, 17 alongside 18 fighting Viara, successfully managing to break his body. After Anilaza is created, 17 alongside Team Universe 7 engage the giant monster in combat, however they are overwhelmed. He is almost knocked out of the arena, however 18 sacrifices herself and launches 17 back on the arena. Android 17 alongside Goku, Vegeta, Gohan and Frieza engage Anilaza in a beam struggle, however Anilaza still manages to overwhelm them. Android 17 sees and damages Anilaza's energy reactor, giving his teammates the opportunity to knock him out of the arena.

Android 17 firing a energy barrage at Top

With only Team Universe 7 and Team Universe 11 remaining, while Goku and Vegeta fight Jiren and Frieza fights Dyspo, Android 17 and Gohan fight Top, however they are at a disadvantage. 17 forms up a plan to knock both himself and Top out of the arena. 17 fights Top hand-to-hand and gets his shoulder dislocated. However he manages to trap himself and Top in an Android Barrier, giving Gohan the opportunity to knock both of them off the arena, however Top was able to free himself. Gohan leaves to help Frieza against Dyspo, leaving Android 17 to fight Top alone. After Gohan sacrifices himself to eliminate Dyspo with the help from Frieza, 17 continues his fight with Top by using his infinite energy to run out the tournament clock. Engaging in a energy clash that draws 17 to the edge of the arena, Golden Frieza blast Top in the back with Crazy Finger Beam, which allows 17 to over power Top and knock him to the edge on the other side of the arena. Abandoning his sense of justice, Top decides to ascend to God of Destruction Mode. Amused and unfazed by Top's transformation, Frieza attempts to deflect an Energy of Destruction blast by Top, but is overpowered and the arena is split in half. Drawing his attention to 17, Top easily overpowers 17 and almost eliminates Frieza, who is saved by 17 throwing a rock which lands Frieza on an edge of the arena.

Android 17 vs. Top

17 engages God of Destruction Top on his own and his attacks prove to be ineffective but, still holding a significant speed advantage over his opponent, uses this to force Top to bury himself in rubble, although it doesn't work for long. 17 is finally caught by Top and bombarded with hundreds of Ki blasts; to 17's credit, he is able to withstand the onslaught. As Top prepared to destroy the area, 17 is saved by Frieza, who attempts to use his psychic powers to no avail. As 17 and Frieza begin to work together to fight Top, Jiren becomes annoyed that Top is struggling with them, so he fires his Power Impact at 17 and Frieza, blasting them away so Top and Jiren can fight Goku and Vegeta. After Vegeta defeats Top, 17 emerges from a large pile of rocks, injured but still in the fight. As Jiren faces down Goku, Vegeta and 17, Jiren congratulates them for making it this far without sacrificing who they are and finally unleashes his full power, quickly overwhelming and knocking out the exhausted Goku and Vegeta, forcing 17 to step in and stand alone against Jiren's full might.

"Sacrificing myself for others... I kind of like how human that is."
— 17's last words before he blows himself up to stop Jiren's Power Impact in "The Approaching Wall! A Hopeful Final Barrier!"

Android 17 protects himself from Jiren

During the battle, 17 is able to sneak up on Jiren and actually cause him serious damage to his back. Goku now realizes what Jiren's weakness is and that he takes considerable damage from hits if unguarded. Coordinating their attacks, Goku, Vegeta and 17 try again, but are unable to capitalize on the newfound weakness. Eventually, the trio are incapacitated but are saved by Frieza, who dropkicks Jiren in the back of the head and says he is forgetting the rules and is going to just kill Jiren. Jiren blasts Frieza aside, but before he can finish him, he is stopped by 17, who is back up thanks to his infinite energy. Belmond asks what is 17's wish and he mentions he wants to take his family on a cruise, much to Belmond's annoyance. However, 17 asks Jiren what his wish is, saying Jiren only cares about power, so he is just curious. Jiren sorrowfully says even he has a wish. Belmond explains Jiren's origin and 17 realizes what Jiren's wish is. 17 says that while it is quite human of him, he can't erase the past, mocking Jiren for his refusal to accept things as they are. Jiren attacks 17 for mocking his wish, but 17 is able to hold his own and he tells Jiren that his wish won't erase what happened. Jiren throws 17 away and calls everyone weak.

Android 17 prepares to sacrifice himself for his teammates survival

As Jiren prepares to finish off the Saiyans and 17, 17 jumps in front of them and sets up numerous barriers. Goku and 18 tell 17 to run and save himself, since he can actually stop and hurt Jiren, but 17 declines and tells Goku and Vegeta that he is giving up his wish. He wraps them in a barrier and tells them that he hopes he bought them enough time to heal up a little, smiling at them one last time. 17 tells Jiren that sacrificing himself for others is a very human thing to do and that he actually likes it. 18 screams frantically for 17 to move, but he drops his barrier as it was breaking, and jumps into Jiren's attack, stopping it cold in its tracks. Goku and Vegeta survive and fall to a small platform, with 17 nowhere to be found. 17 had self-destructed to stop Jiren’s attack and save Goku and Vegeta, to buy them time to heal up and finish the fight. Vegeta realizes that 17 had no desire to win the tournament and was only there to sacrifice himself if it came down to it. As Goku and 18 mourn 17, a drained Vegeta pulls himself up and challenges Jiren alone, refueled by 17's sacrifice.

Frieza and 17

Android 17 and Golden Frieza

When Goku and Jiren are both drained from their intense fight, Frieza fires a kiai to save Goku from Jiren's Power Impact, revealing his position. In turn, Android 17, shocking everyone, finally manages to free himself from the stage rubble, revealing that he was alive the entire time, and powers up alongside Frieza to face off against Jiren. 17 initially charges Jiren and is able to fend him off for a bit but is kicked aside. Golden Frieza takes his place and is able to fight the tired Jiren. 17 tries to catch back up to them and as Frieza is knocked back 17 flies in and tackles Jiren and charges the same sneak attack he did before, telling Jiren he is going full power this time. Jiren says it won't work again and 17 says same here and erects his barrier trapping himself and Jiren in the full force of the explosion. as the smoke clears Jiren is standing but quickly vomits and drops to his knee's, once again defeated this time by 17. Frieza walks to up 17 and tells him a bit reckless. 17 said even if it went bad it wasn't a problem with you here and asks Frieza to finish him. As Frieza prepares to kill Jiren with a Death Beam, Top resparks Jiren's will to fight and Jiren pushes back Frieza and 17. Goku steps in to help, barely able to stand and the 3 are able to stop the attack.

Android 17 during the final battle

Goku and Frieza both charge Jiren as 17 provides long-range ki attacks to lock Jiren down. The trio is able to overwhelm Jiren but Jiren breaks free from Goku and Frieza, and attacks 17, forcing the heavily injured 17 to defend himself. Goku throws Frieza to Jiren who uses his Nova Strike to pull him off of 17 and through the floor. Goku joins Frieza as a Super Saiyan and eliminates Jiren with Frieza, leaving 17 as the winner of the Tournament of Power. 17 makes a very noble wish to bring back all the universe that were erased and asks them to hurry as he has a forest to go back and protect. The Grand Priest smiles in approval and makes the wish and reveals that if it was a selfish wish the Omni-kings instead would have erase everything in existence. As the wish is made 18 flies to him and hugs him and asks what about his cruise and 17 says saving multiple universes is nothing compared to his job as a park ranger.

In the manga, 17 briefly battles Dyspo, who retreats in an attempt to save Top. As Frieza strand Dyspo and Top on a rock far from the arena, Jiren takes notice and attack 17 and Frieza, prompting Frieza to attack Jiren while Dyspo and Top fall off the stage. Before Jiren can deal an apparently final blow against Frieza, 17 comes to his defense, blocking the blow, and tells Frieza to let him take the lead with a tactic. He declares Jiren impossible to beat in a head-on fight, and asks 18 and Krillin to look after his kids, with Krillin asking if he knows what 17 means, and 18 stoically agreeing. 17 asks Jiren if he's fighting for the wish or his universe's survival, to which Jiren declares both. 17 says the same, but states he will give up on the latter, and that he doesn't want to lose his universe, his planet, or his family, before evidently blowing himself up and taking out part of the ring to everyone's shock and despair, with Jiren standing on the edge of where the stage was destroyed.

Jiren, displeased, demeans his actions, while Goku, downtrodden by 17's apparent loss, puts his emotions aside and then activates Ultra Instinct once again. Later, when Frieza takes himself, Jiren, and Goku out of the ring, 17 finally reveals himself as still alive as part of a plan between him and Frieza, to everyone but 18's shock, his lack of ki rendering him imperceptible to even the Grand Minister and Omni-Kings, along with the reveal that Krillin's wish removed his ability to self-destruct, hence 18's lack of shock. Being the winner of the tournament, and truly allowed any wish, 17 chooses to wish back all the universes, and also raises Universe 7's mortal level in the process. On the trip back to Universe 7, 17 explains his reasoning for changing his wish was so as to not let the Omni-Kings, (referred to as imps by 17, to Shin's incredulity) have their way. Vegeta promises 17 can have one of Bulma's ships, as thanks for being the universe's savior. When everyone says their goodbyes, Goku expresses shock at how strong 17 became doing nothing but defending his island, before Bulma says he can at least hold a job, having been angered by Vegeta's promise to 17.

In the anime, 17 is later seen on Bulma's personal cruise ship, checking in with 18 and Krillin, having been given his cruise for saving Universe 7.

Kicking one of the enemy in the face, he asks if it was Seven-Three who he kicked and after affirming that it was, says that he seems pretty weak and asks Piccolo if he is even needed. Piccolo is glad to see him there however due to the androids not having Chi that can be absorbed by Seven-Three using Moro's ability. Android 17 and Android 18 then prepare to fight Seven-Three and Shimorekka with Android 18 saying that she is there because she is being paid to which Android 17 says makes them sound like mercenaries.

Android 17 proceeds to completely overwhelm Seven-three with a barrage of physical attacks. However Moro shows up and the battle is put to an end. Saganbo steps forward and asks if he can take care of them as Moro shares some of his power with him. Saganbo charges forward and throws a punch at Android 17 which drives him backwards. Android 17 being brainwashed by Hell Fighter 17

Dr. Gero and fallen colleague Dr. Myuu brainwash Android 17 telepathically via Hell Fighter 17, a Machine Mutant version of himself created by the two scientists in Hell with the design of merging with him into the ultimate killing machine. After attacking Trunks and before merging, 17 asks Android 18 to join him, a gesture which she mindlessly obeys until a fatal attack on Krillin brings 18 back to reality, causing her to attack her brother. Seeing what she has done, he then targets Marron so he can gain full control of 18, but 18 defends her from 17's Photon Flash, leaving her in a critical condition. Android 17 locates his Hell Fighter counterpart and the two finally merge, becoming Super 17.

Android 17 confronts his sister

The Z Fighters are shocked by the transformation until Vegeta attacks him, resulting in being knocked back by one punch. Majuub then tries in vain, followed by Goten and Trunks who attempt a combined attack, to no avail. Gohan then tries a Kamehameha, which does absolutely nothing to the super android, as it was absorbed. Dr. Gero then tells Super 17 to demonstrate his true power, which leads him to strike down every Z Fighter, again using only a single hit. The Saiyans then assume their Super Saiyan forms, but Super 17 releases a Flash Bomber, weakening them enough to revert from Super Saiyan.

Piccolo and Dende create a gateway between Hell and Earth, allowing Goku to escape and confront Super 17, before any other Z Fighters can be killed. Goku is later joined by Android 18, whose appearance reminds 17 of both his own and Dr. Myuu's true nature, contributing to the ends of both Myuu, who was killed by 17's Shocking Death Ball, and Super 17 himself.

By taking complete control of the body of Super 17 and powering up as Android 18 was launching shots of energy, 17 reveals to Goku that Super 17 cannot simultaneously move while absorbing energy, thus leaving him vulnerable to physical attacks. It is then that Goku uses the Super Dragon Fist technique to literally punch his way through Super 17, with the resulting hole rendering him unable to absorb the ensuing barrage of Kamehamehas, finally killing him.

They defeat Nappa for planting the Saibamen and endangering the local ecosystem, however Nappa transforms into a Great Ape, whom 17 realizes is the giant mystery creature they had been searching for, though since the Great Ape is not an actual animal 17 decides to leave Nappa up to the Time Patrol as he does not consider it to be part of his ranger duties.

FighterZ

Android 21 Arc

Main article: Android 21 Arc Android 17, while on his ranger duties, was kidnapped by 16 as a test subject for the "linking system". Unfortunately, moments after 17 woke up, the linking was severed soon after. However, moments after waking up, 17 discovered 18 and that her linked soul succeeded in the process. He also learned of the current situation: the Clones of the several fighters that appeared on Earth rampaging the city. 17, 18, 16, and a new android, Android 21 (who was responsible for rebuilding Android 16 by placing his memories into a newer model body as well as the one behind linking souls to both 17 and 18), traveled around the Earth to try to stop them.

In an special conversation triggered by Android 18 and Android 16 being on a team, Android 17 feels nostalgic teaming up together with his sister and 16 again. 18 however states she has no intention of letting him play around and points out that she just wants things to go back to the way they were before the clones showed up. Understanding that his sister just wants to return to her family, Android 17 agrees to doing things her way and asks 16 if that is okay with him, but he remains silent. 18 notices that 16 is holding something back and that he will have to explain eventually. Android 17 notes that they do not completely trust 16 and not to forget it. Android 16 then ends the conversation noting that the enemy is approaching.

As the game progresses, 17 notices something strange about the new android, who was constantly groaning and screaming, at one point 17 even saying he disliked her tone. However, when finding Krillin, who was attempting to rescue 18, 21 finally snapped and told about "eating" him which surprised 17. Luckily, the group managed to subdue Krillin and 21, with 17 having to move Krillin's body somewhere. After this incident, 17 and 18 demand an explanation from 16 and return to 21's lab, where it is revealed by 16 that Android 21 was a human converted into a Bio-Android from the cells of various fighters and scientists. However some of the cells (implied to be those of Kid Buu as his clones share the original's personality) went out of control causing Android 21 to develop cravings to turn people into food to consume and absorb their power like Cell and Majin Buu. This caused 21 to develop an evil split personality which is vying for control of Android 21's body. 16 states they planned to use the soul link system developed by Dr. Gero to suppress the evil 21. Unbeknownst to either 16, 17, or 18, Android 21's human self was the mother of 16's human template who was fathered by none other than Dr. Gero, though 16's template a high ranking Red Ribbon Army soldier was tragically killed in battle by an enemy bullet several years before the army was destroyed by Goku. Android 21 recreated 16 due to him being designed after her human son and would have lived peacefully with him had it not been for her cravings and growing evil persona.

Android 17, 18, and the soul linked to 18 decide to help 16 and 21. Though the soul is able to suppress the evil 21, they end up being confronted by the revived Perfect Cell who the evil 21 had revived and linked with an artificial soul which Cell managed to bend to his will allowing him to access his full power despite the power suppressing waves. Wanting to protect her fellow Androids, 21 transforms into a blue-eyed version of her true form with the aid the soul link. She manages to defeat Cell, but her cravings and evil persona take control and she destroys 16 when he tries to stop her from eating Cell. As he dies, 16 tells 17 and 18 to protect 21's "heart" (good side). They manage to help 21 come to her senses and overwhelmed with grief over having killed 16, Android 21 splits into Android 21 (Good) and Android 21 (Evil). The evil 21 inherits most of 21's power and eagerly consumes Cell causing her skin to change color and gain patches on her skin similar to Cell's spots. The evil 21 leaves, with her good counterpart, 18, and 17 resolving to stop her in memory of their fallen friend, Android 16. They confront her in one of Dr. Gero's labs and discover she was after the remote that controls the power suppressing waves, which both 21s reveal is the cause for the good 21's personality resurfacing after the evil 21 activated the device to suppress the Z Fighters power so she could consume them, but it weakened her allowing the good 21 to join forces with 16 to stop her.

The evil 21 consumes the device to prevent them from shutting off the waves. They are saved by the intervention of 18's husband Krillin who attacks with Destructo-Disc. Joined by Goku, Krillin asks him to use Instant Transmission to go to Korin to get some Senzu Beans for 17, 18, and Good 21, which he does very quickly as Korin had some beans prepared. Evil 21 decides to retreat in order to save Goku and his friends for later and leaves using Instant Transmission which she learns via mimicry. Krillin and Goku tell 17, 18, and Good 21 that they heard all about what is going on from Dende while they were staying at the Lookout and resolve to help them fight against Evil 21. As a result, 17, 18, and Good 21 join forces with the Z Fighters to combat 21 and the clones which she begins feeding on to satisfy her growing hunger. They eventually confront her on the Sacred Planet of the Kais. The Good 21 ultimately sacrifices herself to ensure her evil counterpart both are destroyed by Goku's Spirit Bomb, to prevent herself from being eventually being overcome by her cravings and turning on her newfound friends as she had with 16. When Goku tells his friends not to worry they are afraid he plans to revive 21 with the Dragon Balls but he notes that would fly in the face of 21's sacrifice and that he instead plans to ask King Yemma reincarnate 21's soul like he had done previously with Kid Buu's.

Power

Manga and Anime

Due to the bio-mechanical and cybernetic enhancements Dr. Gero gave him, including an unlimited supply of energy that grants him limitless stamina and an accelerator recovery rate, he has power well-surpassing the standard capacity of Super Saiyan. He was also powerful enough to easily murder his modified creator, Dr. Gero, in three blows and be an even match for Piccolo fused with Kami. During their battle it was said by Piccolo that 17's punches were quite light, but that he possessed very high speed. However, he still had a long way to go, because he is said to have great potential, but this potential was never unleashed because of his absorption by Cell; it is after 10 years of training and working his life as a park ranger at the same time, that he was able to access much of it. According to Future Trunks, his power far exceeded his alternate timeline counterpart, even more so after he trained within the ten-year gap after the Cell Games. During the Imperfect Cell Saga, he was no match for Imperfect Cell, after having absorbed hundreds of thousands of people to increase his power. In Dragon Ball Super, after meeting and fighting with Goku, 17 admits that he would have lost to Goku if Goku was present when he was awakened. He is also stronger than his sister, Android 18.

SS3 Goku vs 17

17 fights toe-to-toe with Super Saiyan 3 Goku

In Dragon Ball Super, Android 17 is currently the strongest android made by the Red Ribbon Army and is later chosen to join Team Universe 7 for the Tournament of Power. He is known to have gotten considerably stronger since he last appeared. He was noted to have gone through considerable training since facing Cell (in the manga it was noted his training came from protecting the wildlife). In the manga, Dende even noted that if he were to still be an enemy of the Dragon Team, it would be terrifying. In the anime, he overwhelms Super Saiyan Goku and then fights on par with Super Saiyan Blue Goku (who was not using his full power, though Android 17 was not using his full power either).[14].

In the manga, Android 17 initially holds an advantage over base Goku, and after overwhelming Super Saiyan 2 Goku, he then appears to have a slight edge over Super Saiyan 3 Goku when they battle with one another, though Goku stops the fight.

During the Tournament of Power, in the manga, once the tournament began, he swiftly defeated Murisam with a quick series of blows, earning the first elimination of the tournament. He then proceeded to easily fend off Rubalt's assault before knocking him away, almost for another ring-out. He then caught Dium by surprise, jumping tremendously high to strike down the flying foe. Against Botamo, despite the foe's elastic form making him essentially invulnerable, Android 17's blows were so powerful, that the sheer amount he contorted Botamo had a recoil affect, launching Botamo out of the arena from the force of his body springing back to normal.

In the anime, he was shown blocking Harmira's Ki Blasts with his Android Barrier and effortlessly beating Dyrasem. He was able to casually stop Casserale's Justice Saber with one hand and easily stopped his Justice Bomber with his Android Barrier. He was able to effortlessly dodge most of Kakunsa's attacks and even when he was hit, Android 17 showed no signs of damage. Once Android 17 got serious he easily knocked Bikal and Kakunsa out of the arena. He was able to fight on par with the angry Ribrianne, although she was able to shatter his Android Barrier with one punch. He was able to catch Catopesra in his Whirlwind Speed Mode and blast him away. Android 17 was able to fight on par with Roasie, and blasted her out of the arena with a Photon Flash after the latter was hit by Ribrianne's Pretty Max Cannon. He also easily defeated Viara. Android 17 was able to fight on par with Rabanra, who had the powers of Kakunsa. He and Android 18 were also overwhelmed by the intense gravity of the Pretty Black Hole and were unable to stand, while base Goku was able to stand up, turn Super Saiyan Blue and destroy the Black Hole. Android 17 was almost knocked out of the arena by Damon, however he was saved by Goku. Despite receiving multiple blindsiding hits by Damon, Android 17 took no damage. While the rest of his team remained clueless to Damon's attacks, Android 17 showed very astute senses, able to determine that their foe was in reality diminutive in size, figuring it out while intentionally letting himself be hit. With Goku's aid to keep Damon grounded, Android 17 was able to trap Damon in an Android Barrier and then proceed to kick the Universe 4 foe out of the arena. Alongside Android 18, Android 17 was able to break Viara's armor.

Against Anilaza, Android 17 was overwhelmed by the giant warrior, and almost knocked out, however, Android 18 sacrificed herself to save him. Together with all the remaining members of Team Universe 7, Android 17 engaged in a beam struggle with Anilaza, and even then, Anilaza almost overwhelmed Team Universe 7. However, Android 17 was able to damage Anilaza's energy reactor with a Barrier Punch, giving his teammates the opportunity to knock Anilaza out of the arena. Against Top, alongside Potential Unleashed Gohan, Android 17 was at a disadvantage against the Pride Trooper. However Android 17 was able to fire a Ki Blast that momentarily stunned Top, and was even able to briefly fight on par with him, however Top dislocated his shoulder. Despite this, Android 17 trapped both of them in an Android Barrier, giving Gohan the opportunity to knock both of them off the arena with an Ultimate Kamehameha, however Top was able to free himself.

Against Top by himself, Android 17 was able to dodge Top's attacks, and was able to briefly match him in a beam struggle, however, Top managed to almost overpower him and knock him out of the arena before being saved by Frieza. Together with Golden Frieza attacking Top from behind, Android 17 was able to turn the tide and overpower Top in the beam struggle. When Top unleashed his God of Destruction Mode, the gap between Android 17 and Top widened even more, as his Android Barrier was shattered by God of Destruction Too's Justice Flash. Despite the increase in power, 17 was still fast enough to dodge Top's Destruction balls. When he was finally cornered by Top, Android 17 was able to withstand his blasts, although he was very injured. Android 17 and Final Form Frieza's Ki Blasts were able to match Top's empowered Ki Blasts.

Against Jiren, Android 17 was even able to withstand a Power Impact from him and is also the first fighter to actually cause noticeable damage to Jiren with a sneak attack. After he and his allies were completely overwhelmed by Jiren's blast, 17 was the first one to return to his feet and quickly recovered enough to engage Jiren. Through mind games and agility, 17 was able to hold his own against the mighty foe for a period of time. Ultimately, he was just strong enough to fend off Jiren's energy ball while protecting Goku and Vegeta in a barrier each, prior to this Goku instructed 17 to run as Goku himself believed 17 could actually stop or at least outlast Jiren, having total faith in his power after seeing 17 hurt Jiren and get inside his head. However, this ultimately proved too much for him, as only by "self-destructing" could he repel the blast, seemingly killing himself in the process. Yet after Goku is drained from the effects of the mastered state of Ultra Instinct, 17 arises from the rubble, revealed to have survived his technique, and further powers up alongside an exhausted Golden Frieza. Watching Jiren and Golden Frieza's battle, 17 is in awe at how strong they are. During his battle with Jiren while teaming with Frieza, 17 was able to deal a devastating blow to Jiren by detonating a giant ki blast in his lower back after trapping him in his barrier, condensing the explosion and forcing Jiren to take all of the attack. This maneuver was enough to actually make Jiren vomit and drop him to his knees in sheer agony, momentarily breaking Jiren's will to fight and making Jiren accept defeat.

When Jiren regains his strength from Top's inspiring words, Android 17's barrier was just barely able to fend Jiren's energy, and only with Goku's help were they able to muster up enough energy to disperse Jiren's attack. Android 17 was able to fight Jiren alongside Frieza and Goku, acting as the support by firing numerous ki blasts at Jiren to cover Goku and Frieza's approach. These ki blasts were able to push Jiren far back and cause a great amount of damage to the point where Jiren actually pushed Goku and Frieza aside to focus his attention on 17, at which point 17's blasts stopped having an effect on him.

In the manga, Android 17 is able to fight Dyspo and hold an advantage, eventually running Dyspo's stamina dry, though Dyspo does do some damage to him. He is no match for Jiren, being unable to even see him move, blocking a single blow of his and being heavily damaged by a single punch from him, his "self-destruct" does nothing to the Pride Trooper, though it does annihilate half the Tournament of Power arena; with Vegeta being surprised that even 17's self destruction did not affect Jiren at all. After the tournament, Goku notes to Beerus that he is impressed by how 17 is "just about as strong as us" despite doing little training.

In the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga, it is noted by Piccolo that Android 17 is weaker than Gohan, and in turn weaker than Goku and Vegeta as well. When faced with the empowered Saganbo, Android 17, Android 18 and Jaco choose to retreat from the fight.

In Dragon Ball GT, Gero notes that Android 17 was intended to have tremendous power greater than Cell's, but he was an imperfect and unsuccessful creation so his true power lay dormant. In the original Japanese version, Android 17 mentions that he's being filled with the power of Hell when he and Hell Fighter 17 open the portal between Hell & Earth. It is later commented by Dr. Myuu that the portal between Hell and Earth was the result of the power resonated by both. Android 17 had effectively become much stronger, on par with his Hell Fighter counterpart. By fusing with Hell Fighter 17, Android 17 is able to access this true dormant power and become Super 17.[15]

Android 17 doesn't actually get a chance to showcase this power. He only fights with Android 18, and it was his intention to recruit her rather than actually harm her. However he does kill Krillin, and he takes an assault from 18 without sustaining damage. He manages to have enough will power not to kill her with his attack.

Super Dragon Ball Heroes

In the anime version of the Universal Conflict Saga, Android 17 is able to overwhelm Oren. With Piccolo fighting along side him, the two are able to overpower Kamioren and cause him to break apart, causing Hearts to have to intervene.

Statements by authors and guidebooks

Android 17 wields more power than his sister, Android 18.[8]

In a statement for the Universe Survival Saga, Akira Toriyama noted that Android 17 has great potential.[4]

In a preview for Android 17's appearance in Dragon Ball Super he is referred to as the mightiest Android, whose power surpasses the ultimate after this decade-plus time gap since his previous appearance.[16]

Toshio Yoshitaka, a script writer for Dragon Ball Super, noted that he believed Android 17 was the third strongest on the initial Team Universe 7 from at the point of episode 92 (before Frieza joins) - only being weaker than Goku and Vegeta, though he notes that since Gohan and Piccolo have gotten stronger they may be superior in power to 17.[17] Yoshitaka later stated that Goku utilizing Super Saiyan Blue in his recruitment of the initial members of Team Universe 7 was simply to gauge and motivate his opponents - specifically noting Android 17.[18] Yoshitaka later went on to state that from his point of view, Android 17 was equal to Gohan in strength and both were stronger than Frost and Piccolo.[19]

During the Tournament of Power, Android 17 was weaker than Goku and Frieza.[20]

Trivia

  • Chuck Huber, 17's voice actor, considers the role his easiest and a "voice actor vacation",[40] as under the direction of Christopher Sabat he did not have to put on a voice and was advised to be calmer in his dialect.[41]
  • Android 17 and Android 18's respective human names, Lapis and Lazuli,[2] when combined, is "Lapis Lazuli," which is a deep-blue semi-precious stone prized for its color since antiquity. Coincidentally, their eyes are also blue.
    • Despite the fact that they have actual names, the two continue on with their numerical designations for an unknown reason.
  • Android 17 is revealed to be a very adept driver. He easily manages a stolen truck while driving off-road and successfully gave the Toad Warriors, a group of motorcycle bandits, the slip by luring them into an oncoming train and swerving at the last second. He also owns a tractor, and is shown driving it during his appearance as a park ranger in Dragon Ball Super. It may be explained due to 17's previous human life, as he may have known how to drive prior to becoming an Android.
  • In Budokai Tenkaichi 3, Chi-Chi says 17 is the younger twin.
  • In Dragon Ball GT during the Super 17 Saga, Android 17 is shown producing a black aura while opening up a portal between Earth and Hell with Hell Fighter 17.
  • Despite being created to kill Goku, he and Goku never actually meet in Dragon Ball Z due to the fact that Goku was suffering from a heart virus, and later Android 17 would be absorbed by Cell when Goku was at Kami's Lookout waiting to train in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.
    • However, in an anime filler, Android 17 and his sister appear in Goku's nightmare during the time he was still recovering from his Heart Virus. In the dream, Goku imagines a nightmarish scenario where Android 17 and 18 brutally kills Gohan, Krillin, Chi-Chi, and Future Trunks. Goku was unaware, however, that the Androids of his timeline were not the same as the ones in Future Trunks' timeline. Presumably Goku's ability to know what they looked like may be the result of his psychic abilities.
    • Though Goku encounters and fights Super 17 in Dragon Ball GT, he never actually encounters the original Android 17. In Dragon Ball GT, Super 17 is the fusion of Android 17 and Hell Fighter 17, not the original Android 17.
    • It is not until the Universe Survival Saga in Dragon Ball Super that Goku and 17 actually meet each other and fight.
  • Like his comrade 16, in Dragon Ball Super Android 17 has developed a fondness for nature and is protective of it.
    • In Xenoverse 2, if Android 17 (DB Super) fights Android 16, Android 16 complements him on doing a good job of protecting nature indicating he approves of 17's current occupation as a park ranger.[21]
  • Ever since the completion of the Universe Survival Saga, 17 has been referred to as "The MVP of Universe 7" in outside media, such as Bandai's promotion of his DLC for FighterZ.
  • After Cell selfdestructed, Goku and King Kai realized he was still alive due to Cell's absence from Snakeway with them, but 17 is also absent, for reasons unknown as he was killed by the same explosion.
