"Gohan, let it go. It is not a sin to fight for the right cause. There are those who words alone will not reach. Cell is such a being. I know how you feel, Gohan. You are gentle; you do not like to hurt. I know because I, too, have learned these feelings, but it is because you cherish life, that you must protect it. Please, drop your restraints. Protect the life I loved. You have the strength. My scanners sensed it. Just let it go."
— Android 16's final words to Gohan in "Cell Juniors Attack!"

Android 16 (じんぞうにんげん16ごう Jinzōningen Jū Roku-Gō) is Dr. Gero's sixteenth Android creation, whose template was Gevo. He was initially designed to serve Gero's vendetta against Goku, who overthrew the Red Ribbon Army as a child but is later deemed unfit for activation.

Appearance[]

Android 16 is easily the tallest of all Androids in the entire "Dragon Ball" franchise, towering at over double the heights of Androids 18 and 17.

He has icy blue eyes, a red/orange mohawk, and gold hoop earrings. His clothing consists of a dark undersuit, with a lime green vest, boots, and bracers. A small Red Ribbon Army logo is sewn to the left side of his vest, indicating his creator's affiliation. This presumptively changes when 16 is taken to Dr. Brief to be repaired; the logo is patched by the Capsule Corp. logo after he joins the Z-Fighters. His physical appearance is based on Dr. Gero's son Gevo.

Personality[]

Despite his intimidating size, monotone dialogue, and seemingly dangerous appearance, Android 16 is calm, friendly, and embraces nature and humanity, aside from a cold and distant attitude towards Goku in particular, since he was initially programmed to eliminate him. He does not tolerate evil and described Cell as an existence whose purpose is to destroy life, especially nature and animals (as Cell is the true evil destroying android that posed a destructive intention to the Earth and its inhabitants of the present timeline, not himself, 17 and 18). He is also protective of whomever he considers his friends, and nature, as he tried to ask Android 17 or 18 to run and hide somewhere and not be absorbed by Cell, even fighting the imperfect bio-android, although these proved futile, as 17's cockiness got the better of him, causing his absorption, and his damaged body and Semi-Perfect Cell's power too much for him, leaving him unable to protect 18, also resulting in her own absorption, and these qualities proved him to be a valuable ally to the Dragon Team in their battle against Cell. He and his fellow android, 17, had a somewhat brother-like relationship. It is likely that 16's nature-loving character inspired 17 to become a park ranger himself after his resurrection, changing his demeanor to undergo a calm, mature, gentleman-like persona, who is willing to sacrifice himself to defend the surrounding animals from whosoever tries to harm them.

16's peaceful qualities led to a surprising affinity with Goku's son Gohan. In Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, Android 16 firmly states that he is only after Goku, not his offspring, and even requests Gohan to assist him in a field test of his newly repaired body. When both are in the forest, 16 feeding some deer catches Gohan's eye, and the two begin to bond over their shared love of animals. 16 believes Gohan possesses a fine goal in becoming what he believes will be an exemplary scholar. Despite 16's belief that he is a defective failure due to not possessing the bold and daring qualities his human template Gevo did, Gohan thinks otherwise. Their newfound friendship leads to a team-up against poachers seeking the furs of the nearby deer, with Gohan and 16 sending them packing. Once they are victorious, 16 ends up thanking Gohan for his assistance in battle as well as for helping to repair him, then reveals that the real reason he asked Gohan to accompany him was to evaluate Gohan's strength by fighting the Saiyan himself, but recognizes there was no longer a need, remarking that Gohan's immense power surpassed all of his system's records. Despite Gohan thinking that his father is way stronger, 16 believes that the boy will be the deciding factor in the Cell Games, and remarks that the two of them are not so different after all. During the Cell Games, 16's words prove true, as in his dying moments he becomes the catalyst for Gohan's ascension, using his words inspiring Gohan to stop holding back and awaken his true power.

Even though was programmed to kill Goku, 16 is not truly hateful of him. In Xenoverse 2, Android 16 reveals that he recognizes that Goku is a noble person and admits that he would prefer to be free of his programming. In FighterZ, the new model of Android 16 did end up not retaining his program to kill Goku when Android 21 transferred his memory into the new body, which he notes when he confronts a Goku Clone.

Biography[]

Background[]

Android16BirdPeace

Android 16 clearly showing his love for nature

Android 16 is an incomplete android designed by Dr. Gero to be created exclusively from synthetic technology. He was modeled on Gero's dead son Gevo, a high-ranking Red Ribbon soldier long ago felled by an enemy bullet. In his affection, Gero made him powerful but did not want him to be destroyed in battle, so he made him gentle.[2] Android 16's programming has yet to be completed and, as such, Dr. Gero opts not to activate him in fear that he might destroy Android 17 and Android 18. Dr. Gero even goes as far as to dub Android 16 a "prototype".[3] Android 16's most significant malfunction from Gero's perspective is likely his inherently peaceful behavior, often interacting with nature rather than complying with Gero's orders, making him similar to Android 8, although he is still committed to fulfilling his mission on destroying Goku. In due course, there is some truth to Dr. Gero's prediction, as Android 16's serene outlook drives him to attempt to destroy Cell, in an effort to eliminate the serious threat Cell posed to peace on Earth. Android 16 is very quiet, normally talking only when needed. He is also the only character that addresses that Android 17 and Android 18 are not evil.

Due to these defaults, Android 16 was not meant to be activated before eventually being fixed by Dr. Gero; this is evidenced in Future Trunks' timeline where Android 16 is not seen and was possibly not activated, possibly due to his peaceful nature or because Future Goku was already dead due to the Heart Virus and, thus, was no longer needed (Future Trunks fails to recognize Android 16 upon his second visit from the future). In Xenoverse 2, it is shown that Future Android 16 does actually exist in Future Trunks' timeline as he is found and reprogramed by Towa (in parallel timelines created as a result of the 2nd Future Warrior fixing Towa's alterations Future Android 16 is activated and joins forces with Future Android 17 and Future Android 18) to kill Future Gohan in Age 780 and later Future Trunks in Age 785 but was defeated both times thanks to the intervention of the 2nd Future Warrior and eventually destroyed.

"Negative! I will only fight Goku."
— Android 16 when 17 and 18 ask him to fight Vegeta

Android trio formed

16 activated by 17 and 18

In the mainstream timeline, Android 18's curiosity in Android 16 leads her to activate the giant and the discrepancies with Gero who severely forbids her from doing so lead Android 17 to kill him. Future Trunks attempts to destroy the androids with a Buster Cannon before the activation of Android 16, but his attack has no effect on the trio and thus Android 16 is activated. Once he is activated, Android 17 asks Android 16 what it feels like to be free for the first time in years and tells him that Dr. Gero warned them not to activate him, saying he would destroy them all. Android 18 asks what Gero meant, but Android 16 does not respond. Android 17 then asks Android 16 whether he does not want to tell them or whether he is just the strong, silent type, but Android 16 still says nothing. Android 17 then asks if Android 16 was created to kill Goku, and Android 16 simply says yes. Android 17 says that he hates the idea of following Gero's programming but feels that they need a sense of purpose. The trio then proceeds to travel in search of Goku, ignoring the nearby Z Fighters.

Android 17 with 18 and 16

As the androids pass over a mountain road, 17 decides to land and says that they will steal a car and drive to Goku's House, as there is no need to rush, reveling in his newfound freedom. 18 remarks that 17 is still part human, as he has the male love of pointless amusement. 17 asks 16 if he understands, since he was created from a human male too. Android 16 then reveals that he was never a human, making him fundamentally different from the twins. 17 is surprised that Gero had the capability to make a true android and wonders why he experimented on him and 18 afterwards. When Vegeta in his Super Saiyan form intercepts the trio, 17 and 18 implore 16 to step in and fight, interested to see him in action, as that was their main purpose for activating him in the first place. However, Android 16 refuses to fight him, thus prompting Android 18 to volunteer.

Android 16 watches the birds

When Android 18 overpowers Vegeta in the fight, Future Trunks, Krillin, Piccolo and Tien Shinhan arrive as Vegeta's reinforcement. Android 17 takes the opportunity to ask 16 if he will join the fight, though, as he initially assumed, Android 16 would once again opt out. Vegeta refuses to give up and stubbornly says that he would rather die alone than accept assistance in battle, especially from Goku and his friends. Impressed by his resolve, Android 17 tells the other Z Fighters to respect the code of the warrior and not interfere with Android 18 and Vegeta's battle and promises to deal with anyone who does. However, when 18 breaks Vegeta's arm during the battle, Trunks breaks 17's non-interference truce because he could not bear to see Vegeta injured and attacks 18. Android 17 intervenes and easily defeats Future Trunks, Tien, and Piccolo. At the conclusion of the encounter, which has rendered everyone incapacitated besides Krillin (who is spared so that he may see the others healed by Senzu Beans), it is revealed that 16 has been more intent on observing nearby birds, saddened that they flew away because of the noise made by the battle scene, than to take part in the fight.

Krillin talks to the Androids

Krillin talks to the androids

The androids decide to go to the nearest town to get 18 some more clothes (as her outfit was damaged by Vegeta) and find a car. As they are about to leave, Krillin rushes over to them, telling them to wait. Android 17 asks what he wants, and Krillin asks if they just want to kill Goku or take over the world. 17 says that for now they are just going to kill Goku and will decide what to do next afterwards. Krillin asks why they want to kill Goku, since it was Dr. Gero who hated him, and he is now dead. 17 replies that Dr. Gero has nothing to do with it and that it is just a game, which is why he did not ask Krillin where Goku is. Krillin asks if they would leave Goku alone if he begged them, but Android 16 replies that they would not, they were created to kill Goku. 17 agrees and tells Krillin to hurry and go give his friends some Senzu Beans. Android 18 then kisses Krillin on the cheek, and the androids fly off.

Android 16 lifts van

Android 16 dumps cargo out the Lucky Foods van

As they fly over a snowy area in the north, the androids spot a Lucky Foods van parked along the road next to a rest stop, while two employees are drinking coffee. When the trio inspect it, the employees notice and attempt to stop the Androids but are frightened when 16 lifts the van and dumps out its cargo. The androids then drive off, and 17 plans to head to Goku's House, but 18 reminds him that she wants new clothes and 17 agrees to take care of that first. As they drive, 18 asks 17 if he even knows where Goku's House is, and 17 replies that he doesn't and he has been guessing. 16 then chimes in with the house's coordinates and says they can be there within minutes if they fly. 18 agrees with flying there, but 17 says that small things in life are what make it fun.

Androids 18, 17 and 16 in the van

Later, the trio are pulled over by police officers and arrested for stealing the van. However, they simply break their handcuffs off and destroy the police car, before continuing on their way. Once they reach town, 18 shoplifts clothes from a store. As a result, the owner calls the police, and soon police cars begin to pursue the androids' van again. Android 18 flies out and punches the cars, causing them to crash into each other.

Androids come to a stop

The androids come to a stop after feeling Piccolo and Cell's fight

As the trio drives to Goku's home, 17 suddenly comes to a stop. He and 18 get out, feeling a sudden change in the atmosphere. 16 says that it came from the outskirts of West City. He then says that two organics with powerful ki are fighting. 17 says that he never told them he was equipped with a Power Radar, but 16 replies that he never asked. 17 asks who is fighting, but 16 says neither are in his databanks, although one of them rivals 17 in power. 17 says that his Power Radar is malfunctioning, as no one rivals him in power. The androids then decide to continue onwards, unaware that the combatants are Piccolo, who recently fused with Kami, and Cell, the ultimate creation of Dr. Gero created from the genes of the most powerful warriors to walk the Earth.

As they ride, Android 16 tells 17 and 18 that one of the powers he felt earlier was losing energy (This is the result of Cell absorbing energy from Piccolo) and the fight seems to have reached a conclusion. Android 17 gets cocky and again says that 16's sensors need to be re-calibrated because no one can match their power. Later, 18 tells 17 that she doesn't like her new outfit and when they reach another town she wants to stop to find more clothes, which 17 reluctantly agrees to, while 16 curiously observes a nearby river.

TheAndroidsatGoku'sHouse

The Androids at Goku's House

When the androids finally arrive at Goku's House, they find it completely deserted (Due to the Dragon Team anticipating this and evacuating a sick Goku days prior). 17 asks 16 if he knows where Goku might be, and 16 replies that he could either be at Capsule Corporation or at Kame House. The trio decide to fly to Kame House, the closer of the two locations.

The androids arrive at Kame House

The next day, at Kame House, Piccolo watches the news of Cell's attacks on TV while Krillin, Yamcha, and Tien sleep. Suddenly, Piccolo hears something, and sees the trio of androids standing outside Kame House, much to his horror. Android 16 states that Goku is not here, which disappoints 17. Piccolo wakes up the others, and 17 asks where Goku is, saying that he will use force to make them talk if necessary (Unbeknownst to the androids, Goku, who recovered from his illness, took Gohan, Vegeta, and Future Trunks to The Lookout on the previous day to train in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber in order to gain the power to kill the androids). Piccolo replies that he wants to see 17 try and says they should go to an uninhabited island nearby where they can fight. After telling the others to stay at Kame House, Piccolo and the androids fly over. Once they land, 17 gives Piccolo one last chance to them where Goku is, but the brave Namekian is not intimidated and tells the cocky android that he will not go down so easy this time. As Piccolo powers up, 16 notices that there is something strange about Piccolo and doesn't believe he is the same Namekian anymore.

Cellinterupts n

Cell interrupts Piccolo and 17's fight

While Android 17 fights Piccolo on the Tropical Islands, the battle is interrupted by the arrival of Cell. Piccolo explains that Cell is one of Dr. Gero's creations and that he needs to absorb Android 17 and 18 in order to complete his design. Cell carries on Piccolo's explanation and tells 17 that the power unlocked from the absorption will be beyond comparison, and that Dr. Gero's dreams of creating the ultimate super-being will be fulfilled. 17 denies this, stating that he is Gero's ultimate creation, and he won't join with him. 17 prepares to fight, however, Android 16 orders him to retreat because Cell is far beyond both him and Piccolo. 16 explains that if Cell obtains his perfect form, killing Goku won't satisfy him, and he'll destroy the entire universe. Now surprised Android 16 is actually speaking, Android 17 is disappointed that the first thing he speaks about is cowardice. Ignoring Android 16's plea, Android 17 rushes towards Cell, but the creature effortlessly knocks him around. Piccolo tries to aid in the battle, but he is easily tossed aside. Android 18 and Android 16 watch the battle unfold, with 18 commenting that 17 and Piccolo must be holding back against Cell, due to her inability to sense power levels. 16 corrects her by saying that Cell is simply too strong for them. 16 orders 18 to run away on her own, as 17 refuses to heed his warning, otherwise Cell will absorb them both and nobody will stand a chance against him then. 18 asks 16 what will he do, but the android stays silent.

Piccolo stands from his beating and uses his strongest attack to in an attempt to defeat Cell. 18 praises Piccolo's power, thinking that Cell was destroyed. However, Android 16 immediately states that Cell wasn't even damaged by the attack. Seconds later, Cell slowly rises from the ocean without even a slight visible scar. Piccolo suddenly pleads to 17 to run away but Cell brutally incapacitates the Namekian and tosses him into the ocean as 17 watches in horror.

Android 16 and Cell clash

Intimidated, 18 believes fleeing is the best option. 16 orders 18 to run once again, and informs her that he will destroy Cell, shocking 18. 16 decides he must use his power now, even though his original plan was to only use this power against Goku. Android 16 approaches Cell, much to the astonishment of Tien Shinhan and 18. Android 16 tells 18 that he's glad he got to meet her and 17, and enjoyed their time together. Eventually, when 17 is at Cell's mercy, 16 interferes by sucker-punching him and releasing 17 from his grip. After calculating that he and Cell are almost equal in strength, 16 charges toward Cell with a barrage of punches and kicks, which the latter manages to dodge. When they both land on the ground, Cell and Android 16 collide with each other with the Bio Impact and Machine Impact rush attacks respectively, however, Cell catches Android 16 off guard and sticks his stinger right into his neck. However, 16's inorganic nature prevents Cell from absorbing any energy. 16 smiles and takes the stinger out of his neck, before tossing Cell into the ground by the tail. 16 steps on Cell's tail and literally tears it off of his body. Android 16 says that this will prevent him from absorbing 17 and 18. It is not until Cell manages to grow his tail back, thanks to the regeneration abilities he got from Piccolo's cells, that Android 16 realizes the desperation of the struggle.

Android16HellFlashAttack

Android 16 attempting to kill Imperfect Cell with his Hell's Flash attack

Android 16 realizes that he must destroy Cell completely so he will not achieve his perfect form, and attempts to kick him, only to be knocked back when Cell counters with two punches. 16 then launches his fist at Cell in retaliation and resorts to using arguably his most powerful technique, Hell's Flash. Doing so he immobilizes Cell and removes his forearms, tucking them beneath his armpits and revealing cannons within the upper ends of his arms. These cannons take a brief moment to charge before igniting a giant explosion that literally created holes and marks around the island. Meanwhile, Android 16 looks into the hole to see the damage he has done. He reattaches his hands as Tien Shinhan and the other androids continue to stare in shock. 16 notices that 17 and 18 are still there and tells them to run, as Cell will not die so easily. But 17 refuses, saying that he wants payback and can now finish a wounded Cell.

Android 16 Episode 166 Stitch

Android 16 damaged by Semi-Perfect Cell

As 17 taunts Cell to come back out, Cell begins to emerge from the ground behind him. Tien notices Cell's plan and yells out to 17, but Cell quickly emerges and begins to absorb the android with his tail, triggering his transformation into Semi-Perfect Cell. 16 dashes towards Cell, but stops short, noticing that 17 has already been absorbed whole. 16 runs toward 18 and tells her that they are leaving and tells Tien to do the same. Android 16 and Android 18 gaze at Cell in horror, as the new Semi-Perfect Cell turns toward the two androids. Android 16 suddenly grabs Android 18, saying that they must escape.

Android 16 takes flight still clutching Android 18, but Cell quickly overtakes them. Cell taunts Android 18 and Android 16, saying that they cannot escape from him, and that thanks to absorbing Android 17, he surprised even himself with his new speed. He wonders aloud how strong he has become, and a furious Android 16 throws a punch at Cell, who remains completely unfazed. Cell smiles at a shocked Android 16 and then blasts him in the head, disfiguring his head and leaving him in a critical condition.

Cell remarks that he has become stronger as well, as a terrified Android 18 looks on. Cell turns towards 18 and says that she is smart not to try to escape. He then says that it is her turn to be absorbed and that he will soon attain his Perfect Form. However, 18 warns Cell not to come any closer, threatening to destroy herself if he does. After glaring at 18, Cell starts speaking in Android 17's voice. Posing as 17, Cell tells Android 18 that it is great to be a part of the Bio-Android and that it is the only way to be strong, while urging her to let herself be absorbed. 18's resolve seems to waver, but the damaged 16 warns her that it is merely a trick. Cell retorts to 16 that a machine cannot understand how he and 18 feel, and that he should not interfere and continues to attempt to persuade her. He says that she should join him in order to achieve ultimate power but makes the mistake of saying that if she joins him, they will be able to fulfill the "great" Dr. Gero's wishes. 18 then realizes that it was not Android 17 speaking, as she and 17 hated Dr. Gero for experimenting on them and would never praise him. Cell scowls at 18 and he is fast enough to subdue her before she can self-destruct and tells her to surrender, but suddenly sees the floating figure of Tien above him, preparing to attack. Tien uses his Neo Tri-Beam to force Cell to stay in place, while 18 escapes with 16.

16 and 18 hide from Cell

After resuming his hunt, Cell struggles to find 18 and 16. Cell assumes that they must be hiding within the chain of islands and yells for 18 to show herself or he will destroy the islands one by one. 18 remarks that Cell would indeed destroy all the islands along with her. 16 assures 18 that she will be fine because Cell is too obsessed with completion. When nothing happens, Cell realizes that 18 will not show herself and destroys a populated island in order to flush 18 out. He yells again, saying that one island has been destroyed and time is running out until her island is destroyed. As she begins to panic, 16 tells 18 not to worry, and that Cell is holding back his blasts to avoid killing her, as he would never risk his dream of perfection. 18 points out that even if she does survive the impact of the blasts, 16 would be destroyed in his condition. 16 begins to wonder why Cell is even bothering to achieve his perfect state, as he seems to be invincible already. Impatient, Cell uses his Super Big Bang Crash to destroy the islands in quick succession. 16 and 18, brace themselves against the force of an explosion, as a neighboring island is destroyed. 18 exclaims that Cell is already on the island beside them, but 16 urges her to stay put and ride out the attack, as Cell is merely watching to see if anyone will fly up. Now reaching the androids' island, Cell holds out his hand yet again, preparing to destroy it. However, he is stopped by the arrival of Vegeta and Future Trunks, who just finished their training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.

16and18watchVegeta fightCell

16 and 18 watch Vegeta fight Semi-Perfect Cell

Android 18 says that Vegeta is insane to challenge Cell, as not even a few days ago, she easily defeated the Saiyan herself. Cell asks Vegeta in disbelief if he really said that he alone would suffice to kill him. Vegeta assents, and taunts Cell, asking him if he is hard of hearing. Cell laughs and says that he is merely stunned by the absurdity of the statement. Watching the scene, Android 18 says that Cell is right and that not even a miracle could give Vegeta victory. She then tells Android 16 that this is their chance to escape. 16, however, tells 18 to wait until the battle begins. He also says that Vegeta's power has increased significantly. 18 is surprised and says that Vegeta could not have changed in such a short time, and that he was not holding back in their earlier fight. As Vegeta powers up into his Super Saiyan Second Grade form, the island begins to shake as Cell, 18, and 16 watch in shock. In denial, 18 believes that Vegeta might have only pretended to be weak when they fought previously, but 16 states he'd have no reason to do that, and that something changed in the last few days.

16 and 18 see Krillin

The androids see Krillin

Instead of fleeing, 18 and 16 watch the battle between Cell and Vegeta and soon, Krillin finds their location on the island. Noticing that Vegeta, Trunks, and Cell haven't noticed the androids, he realizes this is his chance to shut 18 down with the remote Bulma made from Android 17's blueprints. He then remembers Bulma's warning that he has to be within ten meters of the android's location for it to work, and he descends, hoping to shut 18 down without them noticing. However, after seeing Android 18, Krillin struggles to make himself push the button. Ultimately, Krillin gives into his feelings of infatuation for 18 and drops the Shut Down Remote, which causes 18 and 16 to notice his presence. Android 18 reacts with shock, seeing the dropped remote, and wonders how Krillin could have gotten his hands on it, considering Android 17 crushed the one Dr. Gero had. Krillin apologizes to Bulma for all the effort she put into the remote, but crushes it under his boot, despite the imminent danger of Cell absorbing 18. Krillin orders 18 to leave the island before Cell finds her. Shocked and confused, 18 asks Krillin why he spared her, but he struggles to reply.

Cell spots Krillin and the androids

Meanwhile, Cell appeals to Vegeta's ego, stating that if he were in his Perfect Form, he would be a much better challenge. Vegeta, wanting a stronger opponent, agrees to Cell's proposition. As Cell goes to leave, however, Trunks transforms into a Super Saiyan and cuts him off. Cell yells at Vegeta to do something about Trunks, but then spots 18 and 16 and realizes his perfect form is now within his reach. Trunks looks over at what Cell is looking at, and spots 18 and Krillin as well. He realizes they do not know Cell has noticed them and screams out "Hey! Cell has found you!". The androids and Krillin panic as Cell flies toward them. Trunks transforms into his Super Saiyan Second Grade form and follows Cell. He almost reaches Cell, but Vegeta kicks Trunks away, into a nearby mountain. Cell lands in front of them, and the androids prepare to fight him.

In the anime, Android 18, Android 16, and Krillin attempt to fight Cell in vain, but the Bio-Android effortlessly beats them all. Meanwhile, Trunks resolves to stop Cell's completion, even if he has to go through his own father and proceeds to fire a Super Buster Cannon at Vegeta and then flies after Cell. Knowing he cannot defeat Trunks, Cell uses a Solar Flare. With everyone blinded, Cell quickly absorbs Android 18. During his transformation, Cell creates an forcefield to evolve without interference. Suddenly, Cell's barrier flashes blindingly bright and explodes. Cell emerges from the dust in his new form. Krillin glares at Cell and calls him a monster for absorbing 18. In his rage, and ignoring Trunks' warning, Krillin attacks Cell, who isn't harmed in the slightest. Cell punches the air a few times to test his strength, and with a smile, he turns around and kicks Krillin in the face, sending him flying and nearly killing him, much to 16's shock.

As he watches the battle between Super Vegeta and Perfect Cell, 16 assumes that while Cell may have gotten stronger, Vegeta still has the upperhand. 16 is quickly proven wrong when Cell easily toys with Vegeta and states that he is still warming up. 16 briefly tries to step in and attack Cell from behind, but the Bio-Android hears him and warns him of what will happen if he carries out his attack. Desperate to kill Cell, Vegeta resorts to using his ultimate attack: Final Flash. While charging it, Vegeta challenges Cell to take on the attack head-on. Amused, Cell continues to stand calm and collected, smiling while Android 16 looks in disbelief. Trunks immediately tries to convince his father otherwise, as the super-charged blast could destroy the Earth, but Vegeta still proceeds.

As Vegeta fires the blast, Cell realizes at the last moment that it might be too powerful for even him to withstand before taking the full brunt of the attack. At the last second, Vegeta weakened his attack to avoid destroying the Earth, much to Krillin and Trunks' relief. Cell managed to survive the blast, however, it vaporized everything to the right side above his torso. Initially, Vegeta believes that he has won and laughs at Cell, until he reminds the Saiyan prince that Piccolo's Namekian DNA is a part of him, which gives him the ability to regenerate. After regrowing his arm, Cell easily overpowers Vegeta and knocks him unconscious. Before Cell can finish off Vegeta, Trunks reveals the power he kept hidden and challenges the Bio-Android to finish what his father couldn't.

Trunks answers that he's training to defeat him and by tomorrow, Goku will be the one to finally kill the Bio-Android. Cell is pleased by this answer and proposes to hold a martial arts tournament in ten days. He challenges Trunks to gather his allies and get stronger so they can compete against him in one-on-one fights. Cell says that once he has decided the location for the tournament, he will broadcast it on television, before leaving. Once Krillin and a healed Vegeta arrive, Trunks tells them about Cell's plan.

On the day of the Cell Games, the fully repaired Android 16 is the second warrior to arrive, after Vegeta, with a Capsule Corporation patch over his Red Ribbon Army logo. Cell is surprised to see 16, claiming that he forgot he existed. Vegeta says only Bulma and her father could have repaired the android, but they wasted their time trying to get involved. When the rest of the Dragon Team arrives, 16 walks over to Krillin, and thanks him for getting him fixed. Goku approaches 16 and wishes him good luck, but 16 refuses to accept his kindness and simply says, "I was created to kill you. Do not forget that, Son Goku." This prompts Goku to tell Krillin that 16 is very depressing.

Android 16 saves Mr. Satan and his camera crew

After he and Cell finish warming up, Goku decides to use his full power, and the resulting power increase shocks most of the Dragon Team, except Gohan. Cell then powers up in a similar fashion ending with similar results. As their battle becomes more intense, Cell says he did not think it would be this fun, and he would hate for it to end from a ring out. He says he will remove ring outs being a loss from the rules, since they have no need for it. Goku screams down at everyone to get away from the ring, as Cell points his hands down at the ring, preparing to destroy it. Cell's attack completely destroys the ring and leaves a massive hole where it used to be. Everyone manages to escape the explosion safely, with Android 16 having taken care of Mr. Satan, Jimmy Firecracker and the cameraman. 16 tells them all to leave, because it's not safe, but they will not listen. Cell and Goku both land on the ground, and Cell says the entire planet will be their ring now, and victory will be decided by either giving up or death.

After an intense battle that leaves both combatants exhausted, Goku realizes that Cell still has strength to spare and he cannot defeat him, so in a surprising turn of events, Goku says that he gives up, which leaves everyone shocked. After a moment of suspense, Goku turns to the Dragon Team and calls his son Gohan to fight, stunning everyone else present. As the battle occurs, Gohan does not have the same fighting spirit as his father nor does he have the desire to kill, thus allowing Cell to gain the upper hand. Gohan tries to convince Cell to stop the senseless violence and says that Goku wanted him to fight because his hidden power is unleashed once he becomes enraged. Cell thinks Gohan said all that to try to scare him, but instead, he is going to try to make Gohan angry and threatens to use his friends as motivation.

16 Surprises Cell

Android 16 lunges at Cell in an attempt to kill them both

Just then, Android 16 unexpectedly flies in and restrains Cell with a Bear Hug. Piccolo notes that his lack of ki let him get in undetected. Krillin and Trunks are shocked that 16 would fight Cell, since he isn't powerful enough. 16 asks them to forgive him and that he will destroy himself along with Cell. 16 says that none of them will survive the blast at close range and attempts to detonate himself. However, the attempt fails, which leaves 16 confused. Krillin informs him that his Self Destruct Device was removed by Bulma and her father because it was too dangerous. Cell sarcastically says that this is too bad, but that a bomb wouldn't have killed him anyway. Cell escapes his hold and blasts the android into pieces, though his head remains intact. Cell calls 16 one of Dr. Gero's failures and kicks his severed head away. Looking at the Dragon Team, Cell says that it is now their turn, and counts that there are seven of them. Cell gives birth to seven miniature copies of himself from his tail. Calling them Cell Juniors, he orders them to attack the Dragon Team in attempt to anger Gohan.

"Protect the life I loved."

Android16Ep184

Android 16 before being eliminated by Cell, triggering Gohan's rage

Jimmy Firecracker and Mr. Satan are watching this while hiding behind a rock, and Jimmy suggests they leave while they still can. However, the disembodied head of Android 16 speaks up, pleading with them to take him to Gohan before they leave. At first, Mr. Satan is reluctant, but 16 questions if he's really the World Champion. Jimmy yells that he's a human champion, and this is a battle of freaks. However, Mr. Satan manages to find a bit of courage and agrees to do it, saying that if he ran away while a bunch of no-names were out there fighting, he'd be a laughingstock. Mr. Satan grabs Android 16's head and runs with it, still scared, but 16 assures him that he only has to get close enough to throw him. Once he gets close enough, Mr. Satan throws 16's head, and he lands close to Gohan where he encourages the young warrior to release his anger and defend the Earth, which he has come to love. Afterward, Cell steps on 16's head without hesitation, ending the existence of the peaceful android, and enrages Gohan to the extent that he ascends to the Super Saiyan 2 transformation and eventually defeats Cell.

It is not clear whether he was revived or not when the rest of Cell's victims were resurrected with the Dragon Balls. Even though Android 16 was purely made of technology (Unlike Androids 17 and 18, who were part human), characters like Arale Norimaki and Android 8 (who are also purely mechanical) were also revived when the Earth was restored following the battle with Kid Buu.

Android 16 in the Super Space-Time tournament

An incarnation of Android 16 appears as one of the competitors in the Super Space-Time Tournament, along with Androids 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, and 19. As a result of his team failing to advance to the second round of the tournament, Android 16 and his space-time were erased.

In the anime, another incarnation of Android 16 appears with Xeno Gohan to help Yamcha and Vidro against Transcended Chilled.

Online[]

In Age 1000, the Red Pants Army and a clone of Dr. Gero mass-produced weaker copies of Android 16 which though identical to Android 16 in appearance, they lack his non-aggressive personality and love of nature. Dr. Gero's clone also lacked the original Dr. Gero's parental love for Gevo, thus had no qualms about using them against the Red Pants Army's enemies. Three of these models appear under the name Android 16A, Android 16B, and Android 16C but are ultimately destroyed by Time Patrol.

Budokai Tenkaichi 3[]

What If Sagas

In one of the game's original What If Sagas, an alternate timeline of the Red Ribbon Army War is shown where Dr. Gero sends the Android built in Gevo's image back in time to kill Kid Goku before he could wipe out the Red Ribbon Army.

Fortunately, Android 16 finds Goku after the fall of Muscle Tower thus Goku has the support of Android 8 who fights to protect his friend from 16. Eighter notes their similarities and the fact that 16 is a multiple of 8. Ultimately 16 is defeated by Eighter and Goku, with 16 content to have fought them, recognizing the power of Eighter and Goku's friendship.

Xenoverse 2[]

Android Warfare Saga

The Time Breakers empower Imperfect Cell with Dark Magic, making him stronger than Android 16, allowing him to defeat Android 16 and absorb both Android 17 and 18 at the same time, bypassing his Semi-Perfect form and transforming straight into his Perfect form, which Xeno Trunks surmises will cause the Cell Games to never occur. Guided by Trunks: Xeno from the Time Nest, the Future Warrior travels to Age 767 just as Piccolo is about to engage Android 17, whom they discover was also empowered by Dark Magic before Cell arrives. Android 18 asks Android 16 if he has any data on the Warrior and he will say he does not and will comment on the Warrior's selected race. Eventually, Cell shows up and Piccolo is defeated, causing Android 16 to step up to protect his comrades and the Earth from Cell. However he as he is no longer evenly matched with Cell, the Future Warrior assists him in holding off Cell. Eventually, Android 17 challenges Cell to face him and is absorbed, restoring the original timeline. Later during the Cell Games, Cell creates several Dark Cell Juniors to torment the Z Fighters in an attempt to enrage Gohan, forcing the Future Warrior to assist the Z Fighters in fighting them off. They do this to buy time so, Mr. Satan can throw 16's head near Gohan so he can say his final words to Gohan and be destroyed by Cell, resulting in Gohan's transformation into his Super Saiyan 2 form, restoring the original timeline.

FighterZ[]

DB FighterZ Red Ribbon Army Android 16 & Android 21 (Cutscene)

New model Android 16 and Android 21 in Dragon Ball FighterZ

Android 16 is repaired by Android 21, who places his memories into a new model. The new model Android 16 does not consider himself the original, thinking he is instead an imitation like the Clones. He retains the original's gentle personality, though without his programming to kill Goku. Android 21 rebuilt him due to him being modelled after her original Human self's son. Though he doesn't understand her imagining what her life as a human was like being an artificial being modelled after a human, he does come to care for her original good personality which he refers to as her "heart" and does his best to oppose the evil personality created by her cells going out of control. Though he acts like he opposes the Dragon Team in the Super Warrior Arc, he is defeated, and they realize he has no real loyalty to the Red Ribbon Army and only remains by Android 21's side to protect her good side which her evil side is holding hostage. He is also responsible for using the soul linking system to link a Human Soul to Goku in the Super Warrior Arc, while it ends up linked with Frieza in the Enemy Warrior Arc. In the Android 21 Arc, he works with Android 21's original personality to link the human soul with Android 18 and enlist both her and Android 17's aid in combatting the clones created by Android 21's evil personality as part of a plan to have the human soul grow strong enough to link with Android 21 to control her hunger and keep her evil personality in check. He later explains the situation to his fellow Androids who resolve to help her and Android 16 who is determined to protect her from her evil counterpart.

Power[]

Manga and Anime

Originally, Android 17 claimed in the anime after scanning him from within his containment pod that 16 was weaker than himself, but this most likely due to him being inactive at the time. Android 16 is revealed to be the most powerful of the Red Ribbon Androids, other than Cell. In Dragon Ball Z Kai, Dr. Gero stated that Android 16 himself can doom the entire planet.[4][5] Android 16's power was on par with Imperfect Cell after the latter had increased his power from absorbing energy from several hundred thousand people on Earth (and was also immune to Imperfect Cell's "feeding" tail largely because of his completely synthetic nature), though he was no match for Semi-Perfect Cell, who took his punches without so much as flinching. After being repaired and modified by Bulma and Dr. Brief, Android 16 proved able to restrain Perfect Cell for a good period of time.

Statements by authors and guidebooks

Daizenshuu states that Android 16 is even stronger than Android 13.[6]

Video games

In Dragon Ball Z: The Anime Adventure Game, #16's power level is 30,000,000.

In Dragon Ball Legends, having been modified by Dr. Gero, Android 16 became about even to the new Cell's Semi-Perfect Form in power. Additionally, after being repaired by Bulma (Youth) who unlike her older counterpart failed to discover his Android Bomb, Android 16's Self Destruct Device produces an explosion strong enough to badly injure the Hera Clansman Boujack enough to effectively eliminate him from the Super Cell Games as it took awhile for Boujack to recover from said injuries.

Abilities[]

  • Flight – The ability to fly without the use of ki.
  • Energy Attack – The most basic form of energy wave used by androids.
  • Goku Termination Program - Android 16 was originally programmed by Dr. Gero to kill Goku. The program contains information on Goku such as his address, fighting style, and techniques. The program causes Android 16 to be cold towards Goku during the Cell Games though he refrained from trying to kill him due to the threat posed by Cell. Named in World Mission, it appears as one of Android 16's Abilities. At the start of battle, 5x his own PWR if Goku or Goku (GT) is on enemy team. However when he was reconstructed by Android 21 he lacked his original program to terminate Goku (either omitted by 21 or lost when Cell destroyed his body leaving only his memory intact).
  • Bear Hug – A torture hold used against Perfect Cell.
  • Power Radar – A scouter-like device embedded within the android's eyes (sensors) that can detect energy level and location. Unlike the regular scouters, however, it does not explode upon encountering too high a power level (as far as it is shown in the series). Alternatively, it could be that the power sensors that Gero built simply have a much higher threshold for power sensing, not necessarily that their measurements cannot hit a limit. In Dragon Ball FighterZ, it is revealed by Android 16 that his Power Radar is unable to detect Godly ki as he is unable to read Goku's power level in his Super Saiyan Blue form.[7]
  • Eye Beam – A synthetic form of Eye Laser. Android 16 used this attack against Cell. Also used in the Butōden series and as one of his Super Skills in Xenoverse 2.
  • Hell's Flash – Android 16 lifts his opponent and tosses them to the ground, then he removes his hands, revealing two built-in cannons, and charges up energy before shouting "Hell Flash!!" to release a powerful beam of energy that scorches the opponent. Android 16 used Hell's Flash against Imperfect Cell, attempting to kill him before he could absorb Androids 17 and 18.
    • Full Power Hell Flash - A full powered version of Hell's Flash fired at maximum output. One of Android 16's Special Moves in Dragon Ball Fusions. Also appears as on of Android 16 and the reconstructed 16's meteor attacks in Dragon Ball FighterZ under the name Hell Flash Maximum Output.
  • Machine Impact – A dashing shoulder block attack that Android 16 used against Cell.
  • Pump Up – A power-up move that Android 16 used in Raging Blast.
  • Rocket Punch – A technique where Android 16 launches one of his arms or fists at his opponent in the manner of a rocket, and then it explodes on colliding with someone or something.
Android16BombFlashback

Android 16's bomb

  • Self Destruct Device – Originally intended to be used against Goku, a self-destruct device implanted within Android 16 can incite arguably his most powerful technique. In an act of suicide, Android 16 sneaks behind his opponent, grabbing them and then detonating the bomb inside his chest. Android 16 tries using the self-destruct device against Perfect Cell but fails due to the unforeseen removal of the bomb by Bulma and her father, Dr. Brief, who were very surprised to find that such a powerful bomb had been embedded inside. It is his Ultimate Blast in the Budokai Tenkaichi series. Named The Final Power that shouldn't be used in Dragon Ball FighterZ.[8]
    • False Self Destruction - Android 16 unintentionally utilized this ability on Cell due to not being aware of the device's removal (see above). He glows blue when preparing to self-destruct, only to prematurely stop.
  • Super-Power Direct Attack – A dashing punch used in the Butōden series.
  • Hyper Cannon – Android 16 fires three consecutive Ki Blasts at the opponent. Used in the Butōden series.
  • Kiai – Used in the Butōden series.
  • Mega Energy Bomb – An energy sphere fired from one hand. It is one of his super attacks in the Butōden series.
  • Hell's Beam – A version of the Hell's Flash where he only fires the energy blast. It is one of his ultimates in Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Battle 22 and Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit.
    • Meteo Hell Flash Combo – The name of the version where he uses both the rush and the energy blast parts of the technique. It is his Meteor Attack in Ultimate Battle 22.
  • Killing Neck Throw – Android 16 grabs the opponent's head and swings them over his head before violently smashing them to the ground. Used in the Budokai series.
  • Finishing SplashSkill – A High Speed Rush used in the Budokai series.
  • Devil Crush – Android 16 kicks the opponent up in the air, then he delivers a hook punch, an uppercut, and finally a powerful kick that sends the opponent crashing down to the ground. Used in the Budokai series.
  • Explosive Wave – Android 16 used this attack in the Budokai Tenkaichi series and in Dragon Ball: Raging Blast. He creates a weak burst of energy, with himself serving as the nexus, for minor protection.
  • Hell Spiral – A team attack used by Android 16, Android 17 and Android 18 in Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors 2.
  • Evolution Buster – Android 16 grabs his opponent and performs a spinning piledriver. Used in Super Dragon Ball Z.
  • Gigantic Press – Android 16 lays down in mid-air, diving downward to land on and crush his opponent. Used in Super Dragon Ball Z, this attack is not to be confused with Broly's Gigantic Press.
  • Cyborg Guard – Android 16's most basic defensive move, where he raises his arms up in defense. Named on a card in Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z.
  • Super Rocket Punch - A stronger version of Rocket Punch used by Android 16 as one of his Special Moves in Dragon Ball Fusions.
  • Super Ki Explosion - A more powerful version of the Explosive Wave used by Android 16 as one of his Ultimate Skills in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2.
  • Android Rush - A rush technique used by Android 16 in Xenoverse 2.
  • Energy Field - A barrier technique used by Android 16 as his Evasive Skill in Xenoverse 2.
  • Peeler Storm - A technique where the user becomes invisible and slice 'n' dice multiple opponents with invisible razor sharp shockwaves originally used by Final Form Mira. Appears as one of Supervillain empowered Android 16's Super Skills in Raid Quest: "Kind-hearted Killing Machine" in Xenoverse 2.[9]
  • Scatter Attack - A technique used by bosses encountered in certain Expert Missions and Raid Quests where the stage is connected to multiple other areas via Gates. The user will create to energy spheres then unleashes a powerful Explosive Wave that scatters Time Patrollers into different dimensions/areas. Additionally a dark rock like crystal will appear over the gate which is powered by another enemy located in the now locked area, however their health is connected to the crystal and vice versa. The gate will open only after the enemy and their corresponding gate crystal shared HP reaches 0. Used by Android 16 in Raid Quest: "Kind-hearted Killing Machine" in Xenoverse 2.[9]

New Model 16

New Model Android 16

In Dragon Ball FighterZ, Android 16 is rebuilt by Android 21 (before some of her cells went out of control) by placing the original 16's memories into a new body after the original was destroyed by Cell during the Cell Games. Though he retains the original 16's memories and overall personality he views himself to be little more than a copy of the original and lacks the original's programming to terminate Goku as Android 21 rebuilt him due to him designed after her human son Gevo whom she had mothered with Dr. Gero back when both she and Gero were fully human. Other than his programming New Model 16 is virtually identical to the original in appearance and sports the Red Ribbon Army logo as Android 21 was created to serve as its de facto leader following the death of Dr. Gero. He is loyal to Android 21's original personality which he refers to as her "heart" and secretly works against her evil side. He also possesses the abilities and weaponry of the original as well including a Self Destruct Device. He is also capable of firing a full power version of Hell's Flash called Hell Flash Maximum Output.

This form is playable in Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle and Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission. In World Mission, New Model 16 is only playable via Super Hero Robo Summon Module which requires the player to use a Capture Module on him in the Arcade Mode Universe Mission Age Android 21 Saga: Activation.

  • Android 16 vs. Cell (Semi-Perfect Form)
  • Android 16, Krillin, and Android 18 vs. Cell (Semi Perfect Form)
  • Android 16 vs. Cell (Perfect Form)

Trivia[]

  • After being repaired by Bulma and her father, Android 16 wears a Capsule Corp. logo over his Red Ribbon logo, most likely showing that he no longer wants to work for the Red Ribbon Army.
  • Android 16 shares a few traits with Android 8: they both became friendly, are very tall compared to other members of the show, they loved nature, faced a tragic end, and their deaths fueled enough rage within Goku and Gohan to triumph over the villain that had killed them (Staff Officer Black in the The Path to Power and Cell, respectively).
  • In the original Funimation dub, Android 16 had a more robotic tone in his voice. In Kai and some video games, he sounds more human.
  • In the Funimation dub for Dragon Ball Z Kai, Dr. Gero's reasons for not wanting Android 16 to be activated seem to stem from a fear that his power would somehow be a threat to Earth's existence. This reasoning does not seem to be consistent with that which has been stated in other official sources and could almost be seen as a direct contradiction to his actual reasoning for fearing 16 stemming from the possibility that the android's gentle nature could jeopardize Gero's ultimate goal of revenge against Goku and his allies. The inconsistency of this sentiment is further illustrated in the blatant disregard for Earth's well-being that is present in Dr. Gero's other creations, most notably Cell.
  • Android 16 is similar to the titular main character of Osamu Tezuka's manga series, Astro Boy. Like Android 16, Astro is a powerful android whose creator, Dr. Tenma, built him in the likeness of his own son, who died in an accident. Similar to how Dr. Gero created Android 16 out of affection for his deceased son, Tenma created Astro as a substitute for his own lost child, before ultimately rejecting him.
  • In Dragon Ball Z 2: Super Battle, it is shown that Android 16 went on to live in the forest after Cell's defeat, protecting animals from poachers and other dangers. Interestingly, this is similar to his comrade Android 17 who became a forest ranger after being revived following the Cell Games.
  • Although many people believe 16 was permanently destroyed by Cell, and unable to be revived by the Dragon Balls due to being an Android and technically not a living thing, that is not true, as Hacchan (#8), Arale, Obatchaman and his "comrades" were revived by the Namekian Dragon Balls along with the rest of Earth's good people after Kid Buu blew it up.
  • In Xenoverse 2, Android 16 reveals that he wishes to be rid of Dr. Gero's programming to kill Goku. He is also shown to be unaware that he was modeled after Dr. Gero's deceased son nor that he was intentionally programmed by Dr. Gero to be non aggressive as he assumes that it was the result of a defect and that Dr. Gero viewed him as a failure. However, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot contradicts this as Android 16 clearly states to Gohan that Dr. Gero told him that he was created in the image of his deceased son, but it is implied in the game that he seems to be unaware of him being intentionally programmed to be non-aggressive.
  • In the initial and remastered English dub, Android 16 was voiced with similar mannerisms to Arnold Schwarzenegger, including an Austrian accent.
