Dragon Ball Daima

Dragon Ball Daima has definitely added a significant amount of lore to Dragon Ball - including retconning certain aspects (such as the Kais becoming the Glind and the Kai Tree that births Kais as fruits been changed to the extinct Glind Trees, with the Glind now stated to be an endangered species as a result), bringing back Super Saiyan 4 and heavily expanding on the Demon Realm - although how much it and the Heroes version can be linked together is a topic for another day.

Until then, there's something else regarding the Demon Realm that I'm curious about.

In the original Dragon Ball series, during Goku's training for the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament (the one where he fought Tien in the final), there's a filler episode called "Goku Goes To Demon Land" - where Goku arrives in Fiend Village and has to travel through a massive door in the village (wedged open by a cursed sword) that leads into the Demon Realm; his mission been to rescue a kidnapped princess from a demon ruler named Shula.

After defeating/befriending Melee and Gola, Goku does succeed in beating Shula, rescuing Princess Misa and - with Melee and Gola delaying the demon horde chasing him - removing the cursed sword so that the doorway to the Demon Realm could be closed again, although he does admit to Princess Misa that his victory over Shula was mostly luck.

It's stated that this part of the Demon Realm is located in the Other World, while the game Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle had Shula - along with Melee and Gola - leave the Demon Realm during the dimensional distortion in their attempts to find and recover Dabura after he was bewitched and taken by Babidi, thus leaving the Demon Realm leaderless (and with Shula in that timeline acting as its "unofficial" Demon King).

With what happened in Daima, do you think we may see Shula, Melee and Gola return at some point - even if it's just a cameo?

I know they're filler characters, but so was Olibu and we saw him appear (albeit as a statue at a museum celebrating Earth's heroes) during the High School Saga in the manga - so it's not impossible for filler characters to appear in some shape or form.

I've never watched GT and skipped straight from Z to Super, the last time I watched Dragon Ball was the 2018 Broly movie, and now I plan on rewatching the Dragon Ball franchise with Daima included. But since Daima seems to reference GT a lot I've been wondering if I should watch GT before that.

So everyone is talking about Gohan being excluded from Daima right?

During the buu saga he was 16, but since he was retconned to be a year older in his debut (or we can include HBTC time), we can say he's 17 during the buu saga

His birthday is on may 18th

And Daima starts with Trunks' birthday right?

Everyone knows how I feel about GT SSJ4. It's been around enough time for us to see the opinion of it of most. Most people really like it. It's fuzzy, it's got big hair, a tail, and its got an edge to it that few Super Saiyan forms do, kinda like how SSJ1 felt on Namek. A sort of primal nature and an anger that feels controlled, but barely. Like at any moment, Goku could snap and... well... do you like Eis Shenron. Man, that was so cold. And yes, pun intended. But what about Daima's Super Saiyan 4? The version that appears in canon, and likely will be seen more in DBS?

Daima SSJ4 had enough of it to be a good representation of SSJ4, but Toriyama added enough to make it his own. Instead of a straight port, he took the bold step of altering a fan-favorite form. But what do you think about it? My opinion is that I sometimes have a love-hate relationship with the changes. While I must say that the GT lover in me wishes the changes weren't there, the DBS lover in me really likes the flashy color. If I were to say, I would say that they need to somehow link this form to Super Saiyan god, because if they don't, it'll be another red form, using the same shade. The arms are rather large, and can be a bit unsightly, specifically in the kid Goku form as opposed to the adult Goku form, where the size is a bit more agreeable. At the same time though, that change makes much sense as monke hav beeg hand. The one thing I find to be upsetting is how the fur doesn't reach all the way down the arms, or at least not enough, making it look like Goku is wearing some fluffy shirt.

So, as I said, the GT lover in me doesn't like the changes, but... also... I don't... DISLIKE the changes either. Like, it's hard to describe. It's like I'm let down, but not let down at the same time. And I think what is going on is something I'm only just now realizing...

Daima SSJ4 isn't SSJ4.

That's a conundrum, but the honest truth is, it isn't. The SSJ4 in GT and the SSJ4 in Daima are not the same SSJ4 by any means. They're two totally different forms with a different way of awakening, even if somewhat similar.

But the reason why I like it though is that, even if it's not the Super Saiyan 4 I know, it's still a wonderful form that I feel like I love on a similar level to how I love Super Saiyan 4. Does that make sense? It's not Super Saiyan 4. It's a totally different form. But that form is still a high tier awesome form on the same level as Ultra Instinct and Super Saiyan god.

However, if I were to change one thing about it, it would be this: The fur shouldn't have been red, as that links it to SSG visually, even if it's not connected. It should have been gold fur if it needed to be different. Maybe with a darker skin tone to contrast the fur and the skin. But that's just one thing. The ton of magenta gives me color fatigue, but that might also just be because the fur color was the same as the sky color in the Demon Realm.

Super Saiyan 4 Daima is not Super Saiyan 4 GT, but even though it's not the same as my favorite form, it's still a really good form on it's own that is close enough to my favorite form to be on par with it as favorite 2.0, and a fun interpretation by Toriyama himself, his last transformation he designed (to our knowledge) before his passing. And I think these things are why I enjoy this form so much. It's very different from the SSJ4 I know. But even the things that set it apart that, if thought of as the same SSJ4 make it horrible. But if one separates it as it's own form and says it's not MEANT to be the exact same form, but a different take on it entirely, an entirely new form using the same concept, then the things that set it apart actually make it cool.

But that's the conflicting feelings I feel about it. That's why I both hate Daima SSJ4, and absolutely adore it too.

TL;DR: I dislike SSJ4 (Daima) because it's not SSJ4 (GT), but I also love SSJ4 (Daima) BECAUSE it's different. A new take on an old form I love, and if I simply don't compare it to my favorite form and let it stand alone, I find that I love everything about it.
