Toei Film Canoncity
Canoncity of Toei Films in regard to the TV Anime. So, I've been entrenched in Toei Stuff ever since I took on the task of a GT Goku profile overhaul. And as I've been doing this, it's becoming more and more clear that the way we handle stuff now in regards to the Toei Continuity is half-cocked, has a double standard, and ignores a lot of evidence that these films, as ludicrous as it sounds, take place within the same continuity as the TV show. There's some stuff we have to get out of the way, first. It's already pretty well covered that certain films, despite impossibility, musttake place within continuity of the show. The Dead Zone film must due to theGarlic Jr. Saga, which directly references that film's events. Cooler's Revenge must existbecause of his cameo in GT. Fusion Reborn is (contentiously) accepted as canon (and before this thread, was in question by OmegaBronic) due to the GT Perfect Files' mention of thatbeing Gogeta's first appearance, and due to uncanny references to that film. (Vegeta "messing up the right finger" is an indirect reference to when Vegeta did so in the film, Gogeta directly quotes himself from that film etc.) Wrath of the Dragon is considered canon due to theSuper Dragon FistandTrunks having Tapion's Sword, plot elements introduced there. These are mostly sensible. Another thing that made these easy to accept is the limited contradiction to the Source material (except Fusion Reborn) and guidebook statements. For example, Daizenshuu 7 Chronology marksDead Zone and Cooler's Revenge as part of the official Timeline. This is all well and good, but my issue stems from how this ignores that all of the films, except Wrath of the Dragon through the virtue of taking place nebulously after canon, (which is honestly iffy, as the Toei Continuity adapted the "the past few years have been uneventful" line the Manga made in Z's ending, covering the time frame Wrath of the Dragon supposedly happens, meaning it also can't exist) can work in the actual timeline and we simply ignore the inconsistencies.Cooler's Revenge has, most notably, Goku turning SSJ for the first time in that film, which is an immediate dealbreaker for it's ability to be accepted into canon because when Goku arrived he had perfect control and access of the form. (Though I will rectify this later in this very proposal, as I found information that fixes this contradiction.)Dead Zone is literally an alternate take on the day Raditz showed up, from the kidnapping to the wish to the "first time we've met in years!" and everything it spoofs. Which is an immediate dealbreaker to accepting it as canon. You can't even make it take a year ahead to make it make sense due to the Wish being used up, since within the guide evidence that "proves" Dead Zone is canon, it states it takes place within the same year.Fusion Reborn is self explanatory.Further, the logic to even get only a specific film canon to try and make the pieces fit doesn't line up either. For example, since the timeline doesn't reference Return of Cooler, (and Return of Cooler has major inconsistencies) just events that set up them happening with no payoff, when there's no actual in universe reason to separate the two films into their own timelines, and Return of Cooler is undebatably linked to that film. The film's Anime Comicsuggests to read them together for better satisfaction, the Super Android 13 Anime Comicpoints out they are the Cooler from this film is directly from the last one, and so on. Shouldn't really be hard to see why, when the film isobviously made to be a direct sequel.Somethingmentioned in its own pamphlet.Meaning accepting Cooler's RevengenecessitatesReturn of Cooler.
"In response to fans' strong demand, the second volume of JUMP Anime Comics has been upgraded to a much higher grade!! The movie version 'Clash!! Warriors of 10 Billion Power' released in the spring of '92 is already here!!! The Super Saiyan combination of Goku and Vegeta challenges Metal Cooler, who has been revived with advanced scientific power, with full power! It is the most powerful work that unfolds a fierce battle that exceeds the limit! If you read the first volume of the popular 'The Strongest vs. Strongest", If you read it together with the first volume, you'll enjoy it twice as much!
"In the 6th movie version, Goku and his friends go to save the new Planet Namek from the crisis at the request of Dende, who has become the god of the new Earth. Then, Cooler, the formidable enemy from the previous movie, is powered up and appears in from of Goku and the others as Metal Cooler! Goku and Vegeta are captured by Metal Cooler, but they are super powerful! To defeat Metal Cooler's main body!"
"Continuing on from the last movie, Coola came to appear again in 'Clash!! 10,000,000,000 Powerful Warriors.' You'd normally think that since his younger brother is Freeza (freezer) that his name would be Coola (cooler), but it's not that simple. The truth is that it involves the Shizuoka dialect. The producer Mr. Morishita, who is from Shizuoka, was worried that "Cooler" would be too direct, and remembered that in the dialect of his hometown you'd say "meshi demo kuura" [sort of equivalent to "Let's chow down"] when eating. Because of this, they used the Shizuoka dialect... and so they decided on the name Coola!! To think that it was so complicated a process... But at the same time there are also amazingly direct names like the Big Gete Star, called that because it was a huge thrown-together [getemono] planet."
"Playback! 'The Incredibly Strongest VS the Strongest; Previous movie version! Cooler decides to take revenge after his brother Frieza was defeated by Goku! Goku was seriously injured in the sudden attack, and the Z Fighters were also defeated. When Coola finally transforms and plans to destroy the Earth, Super Saiyan Goku's anger explodes, and Coola is repelled by a super Kamehameha!!"
Now, why am I bringing this all up? Do I want todecanonizeeverything? I mean, yeah, there's inconsistencies, but they're also blatantly canon, so obviously the option here is to just overlook the inconsistencies and roll with the punches, right? And like, yeah, exactly. This is what we all do for these films. My issue here is how we not only go about this haphazardly, when by the logic we espouse for the 3 films (given Fusion Reborn is being contested by Omega) should be applied to other films, and how we ignore the fact that, canonically as of Fusion Reborn, all the films share one timeline. So, more specifically, I want to canonize all the films.First off, to get the stuff we directly see in the Anime out of the way, theShamoiansfrom the Broly movie directly appear in the Otherworld Saga.Icarusappears multiple times, in the Garlic Jr. Saga, Android Preparation Filler, and Goten references him in the Great Saiyaman Saga, and he originates from Tree of Might. Given we're using Cooler's Cameo as the main smoking gun, by all logic those two films happened. It should be noted that with Icarus, when he appears, we're supposed to know who he is because Gohan acts as if he knows him, and the only time they "met" was in the films. While you could say the Shamoians we saw mean only the species itself is canon and Broly isn't, I'd argue that would directly go against Wrath of the Dragon, whose smoking guns are Tapion's Sword and the Super Dragon Fist, which whilst elements from that film that are undoubtedly sourced from there, GT does not actually make reference to where these originate from, meaning you can just assume in the same vein Trunks has a sword randomly and Goku just made up the SDF in this continuity as well.Regardless, these two things are pretty hard to refute. In the same vein of Cooler and Garlic, whilst more indirect, they originate from a film and thus that film should be within the Toei Canon. Now it's time to get into the deeper layer. Whilst I understand any skepticism, from the previously referenced sources or future onces, I do want to fully point out that the Movie Comics and Pamphlets were made with the full intention of informing the goers to the fair and buyers of the comic the full context of their stories, characters, and production, and as such areintendedto be reliable sources of information for the films. Something we already really recognize by accounting for Gogeta's Big Bang and purification, which come from a similar adaptation made of Fusion Reborn. Furthermore, they frequently make claims they verify across each other, meaning there is clear intent involved with the information attempting to be conveyed to it's readers. They're also referenced in the Movie Guide for the Daizenshuu, such as Return of Cooler (as linked prior). Meaning they are legitimate sources.First off, Wrath of the Dragon directly connects itself to Super Android 13. The page ishere. Translation of the Film 13 Jump Anime Collection Book's Page:"The destructive power of that sword is because it was a legendary sword given by the God of Planet Conut!" (Page 55).Also, of course, Tapion's Sword is also the Sword from the Future according to the Film's Comic making this consistent:"Trunks receives his sword from Brave Tapion. This is the sword he wielded in the future."How is this? Well when Tapion leaves at the end of the movie, he takes a Time Machine to his home in his own time period according to the Film 13 JACB."Bulma - Bulma builds a bedroom and a time machine for Tapion, Trunks' older brother. She is a reliable mother." (Page 72)"[Epilogue] The beginning of a new legendIt's time to say goodbye to the hero. Tapion returns to the Conut Planet 1,000 years ago in a time machine. Tapion's legendary sword was handed over to Trunks. The sword that will protect the peace of the past and the future...!! Now, the beginning of a new legend!" (Page 40)This is repeated in the Pamphlet, making it consistent."Later, Tapion gave the sword to Trunks and returned to the past in a time machine."Oddly, Return of Cooler also connects them as well:"Starting with the first theatrical version 'Dragon Ball The Legend of Shenron' released in December 1986, this is the 10th charming theatrical version!! The highlight of this memorable event is the gathering of the three Super Saiyans!! Also, the story is related to the original work and the Android version of the TV anime, so don't miss it!! Please wait for a while until the release date!!"Broly the Legendary Super Saiyan directly connects itself to Tree of Might:"Tullece: Saiyan warrior. The figure looks just like Goku!" (Within the Super Android 13 Comic's first pages). The Lord Slug Comic references the Turles Film through Icarus, making him the same Dragon."Higher Dragon (Icarus): 'A dragon that helped Gohan when he was in danger of a forest fire. After that, he gets along well with Gohan and becomes his playmate. For the sake of his beloved Gohan, it will follow him no matter how dangerous the place is.'""Anime" Icarus in the is referenced to be saved in the forest as he was by Gohan in Tree of Might in the Return of Cooler's Z Character List, connecting them:"Haiya Dragon (Icarus) - The dragon whose life was saved by Gohan in the forest. Although he is not very friendly to others, he is good friends with Gohan. He is a kind-hearted dragon who helps Gohan and his friends by using his power to fly freely in the sky."The Son Goku Legend in Broly the Legendary Super Saiyan's connects it to Cooler's Revenge. The Legend Description:
Son Goku's Strongest Legend 1! Son Goku, the strongest trajectory! The Great Adventure of Goku, a Saiyan Raised on Earth! How did Goku become the strongest? I followed the trail!!
Son Goku Strongest Legend 2! Son Goku, the strongest trajectory! Goku's adventure continues! Fierce battles with super-powerful enemies in the wilderness and in space! Let's follow the trajectory of the strongest!!
Son Goku Strongest Legend 3! Goku's Battle Super Complete Works! Goku has fought many strong opponents so far. Here's a special feature on Goku's battles! Remember the powerful battle scenes!
With that handled:"VS Coola - Goku, Gohan, Krillin and Coola and his men image: Freeza's older brother who appeared in the movie version! He leads the Cooler's armored squadron to attack Goku."Second Coming is the obvious sequel to Legendary Super Saiyan, but JUST IN CASE -"Broli: An immortal vengeful demon who aims at Goku!!! He is the son of Paragus, who once served King Vegeta, and he is a Super Saiyan who is said to be a legend among the Saiyans. He was defeated by Goku once in the battle on the new Planet Vegeta, but he drifted ashore on Earth and revived. In addition to his ferocious nature, his rampaging power is limitless, and he finds pleasure only in destruction and slaughter." (Film Comic)"Characters Catalog 2: Broly - Seven years ago, Broly was supposed to have been defeated by Goku on New Planet Vegeta. In fact, he had survived and came to Earth when the new planet Vegeta exploded. Broly, who lives only for revenge against Goku, was once born on the same day as Goku, and their incubators were next to each other! There was a deep connection between Broly and Goku." (Film Pamphlet)Again, Bio-Broly is an OBVIOUS SEQUEL, but JUST IN CASE -"SSjin Broli attacking Gohan image: "Even Gohan had a tough time against Broli!""Legendary Super Saiyan! Trajectory of Broli's Fierce Battles!! Broli was defeated after a fierce battle with Goku for the first time on the new planet Vegeta. However, he appears on Earth seven years later and confronts Gohan and Goten. He should have been completely defeated, but this time he's resurrected with the power of science and is a war demon with a fearsome tenacity!!""Goku defeating Broli image: "Fateful Showdown with Goku! Defeated by Goku's power.""Gohan vs Broli image: "After that, he resurrects on Earth and torments Gohan and the others!""Broli dying in the sun image: "This time it was supposed to be him who died...!"(All of this is Film Comic)"Characters Catalog 2: Prayer priest of Natade village - The priest of Natade Village who appeared in the previous movie version appears again. The master, who was disgraced by Goten and his friends, plans to sell Broly's blood and make a lot of money! However, he ended up falling victim to the culture fluid." (Film Pamphlet).Altogether, the films are connected, with a breakdown of Broly's history leading to this moment:"The strongest battle. A passionate battle between the Legendary Super Saiyan Broly VS Son family!! (Goku, Gohan, Goten) Broly repeatedly engaged in fierce battles with Goku and other warriors of the Son family. Retrace the history of the battle between Broly and the Son family and discover the hidden secrets!"The Toei Pamphlet for Tree of Might's Anime Character List mentions Garlic Jr/Deadzone as well as World's Strongest."Garlic and the trio - Garlic Jr: 1,450, An ambitious child who competed with God for the throne of God and was defeated. A revenge demon who aims to conquer the world.""Dr Willow and the Ferocious Warrior - Dr Willow: 39,000, An ambitious scientist who lives only with his brain. He gets inside a giant robot and controls it."The Toei Pamphlet for Lord Slug connects itself to Tree of Might, Deadzone, and World's Strongest."Tullece - A lower-class Saiyan survivor. He looks just like Goku and is the leader of the Space Destroyers Army.""Garlic Jr - He was defeated by God 300 years ago, but has been reborn again. He fights Goku in an attempt to take revenge on God.""Dr Willow - An evil genius scientist who has been resurrected. He had only a brain and went inside a giant robot to fight Goku."It also contains a film timeline, and connects all three.Obviously Father of Goku is canon to Cooler's Revenge--We literally see footage of the events, however the Pamphlet makes it clearthey're connected through Goku's origin.Cooler's Revenge Pamphlet also makes it clear that Goku did beatFrieza the way we saw in the Anime, verbatim pulling screenshots from it. This is repeated pretty clearly in the Super Saiyan breakdown in Return of Cooler's Pamphlet, so it no longer is a glaring plothole.Return of Cooler's lists the prior films in one timeline:"Have that super battle again! The villain series!! Genealogy of Super Strong Enemies!"They're all connected. While worth nothing, it's neat to note it also draws attention to Mecha Frieza. "Both brothers have mechanical bodies." So his return also indeed happened within the films.Broly the Legendary Super Saiyan's Pamphlet's Saiyan Breakdown ALSO references Tree of Might."Tullece - He appeared in the movie version of 'The Whole Earth Super Decisive Battle' and fought a deadly battle with Goku. The reason he looks so much like Goku is because the lower-class warriors tend to have similar faces."It also references Super Android 13, Tree of Might, and Return of Cooler."Oozaru Gohan crushing Goku image: Gohan turned into a great ape. He lost his mind and tried to crush his father Goku! When he becomes violent, he exhibits power that even Piccolo cannot touch!!Future Trunks destroying Android 14 image: Even the mild-mannered Trunks can cut down the enemy with his super power once a battle begins!""Movie 6 SSjin Goku image: While being cornered to the limit, he uses his superpower to make a huge comeback!!"The Saiyan Timeline provided in this pamphlet also referencesTree of Might, Return of Cooler, and Super Android 13. Potentially Cooler's Revenge.Second Coming Pamphlet features a timeline, andconnects all the films at that point, even the Original Dragon Ball ones, though we're ignoring those due to the fact they are mostly just canon events compacified/reinterpreted for film.Son Goku Denetsu states that "Anime" Icarus comes from thesame flaming forest events of Tree of Might.Path to Power has a film timeline, connecting all of their events. The Dragon Book says the Films and TV Showall star within Fusion Reborn, and they are referred to as the "History," of the Z-Fighters, connecting all of their events. The Future Trunks Special Comic references and connects itself to Super Android 13 and Cooler's Revenge."Goku vs Coola - When I went camping with Gohan and Krillin, it was Frieza's older brother, Cooler, who attacked me. I've beaten those guys who ruined beautiful forests and waterfalls by throwing them into the sun.Z Warrior VS Artificial Human No. 13/14/15 - Android 14 suddenly attacked us while we were shopping. Fighting in the city would be a big deal, so we decided to settle it in the northern glacier zone where there's no one!"As well as Dead Zone and World's Strongest."Garlic Jr's Castle -Garlic Jr.'s castle towers near the Red Sea, aiming for the Dragon Balls to avenge his father who rebelled against the gods and was defeated.Dr. Willow's laboratory - There was Dr. Willow's laboratory on Mt. Tsurumai Tupuri frozen in ice. Dr. Willow, who is only a brain, was plotting to obtain the body of the world's strongest fighter."And Return of Cooler."Big Gete Star - Also home to Metal Cooler, the Big Gete Star is a machine planet that travels through space in search of energy-sucking planets. In other words, the fact that it is moving means that the Big Gete Star is also a vehicle for Metal Cooler!?"Hero's Legacy's Anime Comichas a promotional within the Book going over GT Goku's history as stickers, and it includes Fusion Reborn, directly canonizing its events to GT. This is backed up by the GT Dragon Book from the GT Dragon Box, which sports it'sOWN Goku lineup/breakdown, and explicitly connects the two Gogeta's as one and the same.Super Android 13 is connected as part of thehistory of Gero's development the Doctor went through to create Super 17.We also know that the movie villains (only Cooler has been spotted)being seen in GT was an intentional thing as all of the previous enemies Goku and co. fought in Dragon Ball. This, again, connects the history of the Toei Films and that of the Toei Anime, making them one long (inconsistent and contradictory) history.Vegeta in GTstates he can recognize Tuffles from their Ki, but he did not gain the ability to sense Ki within the Manga or Anime until his conflict with Earth, creating only one instance in Toei Canon where he met a Tuffle so he can sense their Ki-Eradication of the Saiyans. An event that isreferenced within the Anime Timeline in the Daizenshuu alongside Deadzone and Cooler's Revenge, though admittedly only the setup. Whilst one may argue he may have met one randomly in space, this is unlikely, as the Tuffles were genocided. It also can't be from instinctual recognition or intuition based on his memories being filtered through his modern skills, because the Tuffles were wiped out before Vegeta was born. So, given Vegeta confirms he has met a Tuffle since learning Ki Sensing, it's fairly easy to argue the event in some fashion occurred. This is noteworthy, as this special connects itself to Cooler's Revenge, Tree of Might, Broly the Legendary Super Saiyan, and Lord Slug.Kibitokai in GT when using Kai Kai, the God variation of Instant Transmission, ends up utilizing theInstant Transmission Dimensional Subspace. This was something limited and specific to the film continuities. While it does appear different, the Instant Transmission Space appeared differently in both of it's other appearances as well. When it debuted in Return of Cooler, itwas a red, green, and blue looking locale, and in Broly the Legendary Super Saiyan it's thismulticolor prismatic-like world. So whilst it's not visually consistent, it never was, and doesn't need to be because we know what it is regardless. The fact it exists within the mainline Anime Continuity further confirms that the films are existent within the overarching Toei Continuity.Additionally, Great Saiyaman 2/Great Saiyawomanbeing in the Anime at allis actually further proof of Wrath of the Dragon being canon to Toei, as that is a concept original to Wrath of the Dragon. She later appears in GT.That's all I got for now. With all of this in mind, all of the films arenecessarilycanon, as they are ALL connected, so even if only ONE was, they should all be canon regardless via the mountain of evidence here, and they on their own display a large amount of canonity to the Anime.
